Chapter 4: Friends
"Shizuo-kun, can I borrow your pen?"
"What?"
"I forgot my pencil-case at home."
"Fine."
"Thanks a ton."
"Stop grinning like that, you idiot."
"Stop calling me idiot, idiot."
"Do you wanna die?"
"Pfft, I ask you again, who would want to die?"
"Depressed people like you."
"I'm not depressed."
"Then stop grinning."
"No."
They stared at each other, him glaring and her smiling brightly. It had been two weeks when they started conversing on regular basis like this, making their classmates rather nervous. Yoko's father had finished rebuilding the third wing within a week, so no one in their class wanted them to destroy it a second time.
"Whatever." Shizuo grunted and returned to staring at nothing. His left cheek was bandaged, as well as his hand from a fight he had this morning.
"Aren't you going to study something?" Yoko questioned, returning her attention on copying a large passage from her textbook. They had a free study hour before lunch.
"You really wanna die huh?"
Yoko sighed and shook her head.
"Shizuo-kun, if you continue to threaten me like this, you'll scare Aya-chan during lunch again."
He had the decency to look slightly ashamed. Yoko had found Ayaka crying in the girls bathroom after being bullied again by her fellow classmates, Yoko took pity on Ayaka and very strongly persisted Ayaka become her friend. Of course that didn't scare the bullies away at first, until Shizuo had joined the table the girls had been sitting at.
One wrong word from a girl with way too much make-up on her face and the table was flipped upside down and food was spilled all over the bullies. But as scared as the cake faced girls were, Ayaka had been more frightened.
Yoko had spend three days comforting Ayaka before the despicable girl finally dared to enter the cafeteria again with Shizuo present.
"I think we should do something together tomorrow." Yoko said thoughtfully as she flipped a page.
"Hm?"
"Maybe we can head out into the city, go window-shopping or something."
Yoko didn't have a lot of spending money, since her family was quite large, but she was going to change that. Finding a part time job was definitely on her list of things she was going to do.
"Don't you have your charity work?" Shizuo asked, he didn't sound too happy about spending his day with two girls 'window-shopping'.
"That's on Sunday and only in the evening for two hours." Yoko informed him. "We could go watch a movie, oh! And maybe ask Kadota-san."
"Tch. People will definitely get the wrong idea again."
It was true that on many occasions, Shizuo and Yoko were thought of as a couple, since the two had been hanging out a lot and, besides the first time, Shizuo didn't beat her up.
"That's why we need more friends. Don't you know anyone else who might want to join us, Shizuo-kun?"
He only shrugged. "Maybe."
The bell rang and the two of them got up, both of them walking out of the classroom and walking over to the next classroom to pick up Ayaka.
"That's no good." Yoko said. "We need at least five people to seem casual."
Instead of getting angry, Shizuo gave her an annoyed look. "Why five?"
Yoko waved her hand in front of him, fingers spread wide. "Because, like my hand, it's only natural."
He rolled his eyes.
"You really are an idiot."
Before Yoko could respond with the usual banter, they reached Ayaka's classroom with the shy girl waiting outside for them. "Yoko-chan, Heiwajima-san." She greeted them.
"Aya-channnn~!" Yoko greeted her only female friend enthusiastically. "How was your morning?"
"I-it was okay." Ayaka smiled and then looked up at Shizuo. "Heiwajima-san, are you alright?"
Shizuo nodded.
"Oh! Before we go to the cafeteria," Yoko suddenly said, opening the door to the classroom and poking her head in. Looking around, she spotted the teenager she was searching for. "Kadota-san!"
Kadota was leaning against a table, talking to another classmate and looked over his shoulder when he heard his name being called. Seeing that the caller was Yoko, the teenager smiled and waved at her, indicating he'll be there in a minute.
"Yoh." Kadota greeted them when he finally came out of the classroom. "What's up?"
They started walking towards the cafeteria.
"We were wondering if you wanted to hang out with us tomorrow?"
"Sure, I do have to do something in the morning, so I can only hang out in the afternoon."
"That will not be a problem." Yoko smiled. She really liked Kadota for his laid back attitude and his acceptance of her and Shizuo'z weirdness. "You're invited as well, Aya-chan."
Ayaka smiled pleasantly. "What will we be doing, Yoko-chan?"
"I don't know, maybe some window-shopping, maybe see a movie, wherever the world will take us."
"Sounds like an adventure." Kadota said as they entered the cafeteria.
Shizuo tapped Yoko on her shoulder and gestured he was going for a smoke. Yoko nodded.
"Don't forget to invite your friend as well." She reminded him.
Shizuo shot her annoyed look, but said nothing.
The remaining three got their lunch and sat down at a table close to the doors leading outside. Yoko had only bought a sandwich and a small carton of orange-juice, since her parents scolded her (especially her mother) on spending all of her lunch money on sweets. She would definitely find a job to pay for her own food soon.
After Shizuo returned, the tall teenager informed them that his friend, Kishitani Shinra, would be joining them for this Saturday. They discussed a time and a place that would work best for all of them.
"Hey Shizuo-kun?" Yoko asked when they were walking back to their classroom.
"Hm?"
She skipped ahead of him and started walking backwards with her hands clasped behind her. "I'm really excited for tomorrow, aren't you?"
He was about to tell to walk normally and wipe that stupid grin off her face, but this time her smile seemed actually genuine and pleasant to look at.
"Huh, sure."
The next day Yoko was the first to arrive in front of the statue of owls and clock. She looked at it with dismay, but at least everyone knew where this thing was, so they all could meet up here.
Yoko felt awkward. Awkward because her sisters and mother had gotten wind of her going out with her friends. Which resulted in Yoko wearing really short denim shorts and a frilly pink top thing and white vest. Not to mention the embarrassment of the baby blue knee-socks. The only thing Yoko managed to safe was her hair and shoes. Long live white sneakers and casual ponytail.
So a mild blush adorned her cheeks, along with a drop of sweat. If anyone looked at her now, they might think she was nervous because she had a date. Which she totally didn't, Yoko told herself sternly, so she needed to stop blushing already.
Yoko looked at her watch. In her hurry to get away from her overbearing family, she had come a little early. Okay, a whole lot earlier.
Yoko sighed deeply, but then shook her head and clutched her hands in the air. Today was all about cementing and deepening her relationship with her new found friends. And in order to do that, in Yoko's mind, you needed to make happy memories together.
"Are you Yoko-chan?"
Her mind bubble popped and Yoko jumped sideways, away from the close proximity the voice had come from.
When she looked she saw an unfamiliar smiling face. A teenage boy, slightly taller than she, with pitch black short hair and wearing almost all black, except for his red t-shirt under his black jacket.
"Kishitani...san?"
