Day 15
Is it 15 or 16? 14? I might've lost count…Stopped writing for a few days since nothing particularly eventful happened, it's just me hunting and tending to Coma's wounds. Did you miss me? Sorry about that.
Miss Coma's still out cold, though some of the wounds have gotten significantly better. She certainly looks more peaceful now, that's a good sign right? I've been talking to her more lately, something tells me she'll wake up faster if she knows someone's with her. Do you think she can hear what I say?
Speaking of waking up, wonder what we'll do once she does come to. I was hoping I could ask her what's going on in the world, but yesterday a horrible possibility came to mind: What if SHE also has amnesia? Who knows, maybe she hit her head at some point, not exactly impossible considering she's in a coma, could've been concussion-based. I guess there's only a few things two amnesiacs with no idea what the fuck's going on can do, either we stay here and make the island our home, or we set sail into the unknown ocean, likely never to return. At this point I'm okay either way, this island's a nice place to be, it's big and there's a few other islands nearby, with enough time we could build a proper house, even set up outposts and stuff for longer expeditions, eventually conquer the wilderness and become queens of the jungle or something. If we leave for the ocean instead, we'd probably have to live off raw fish and sleep on the sea bed, a lot less comfortable I'm sure but the possibilities out there are endless, who knows what we'll find! Hopefully not whatever shot her up in the first place but still, ADVENTURE!
Wait, wait, here's an idea! What if we repair the cruise ship and set sail with it? It's not like we NEED the ship to travel, but it'll be like a mobile home for us! There's the whole haunted thing, but we can probably get used to that in a week or so if we really try, ghosts can't actually physically hurt us...right? If not then we'll just get off and sleep in the ocean every night. We could be like pirates sailing the seven seas on a haunted ship! I'm sure we can find resources to patch it up with SOMEWHERE on the island, even wooden planks would do! Hell, we could build our OWN ship out of wood if we want, that'd solve our ghostly problems! Doesn't that sound fun? I'll be the Admiral and she'll be my secretary, and we'll recruit more people like us and get an entire Fleet! Huh, am I mixing up a few words here? Is it crew or fleet? Do you know? No? I guess I'll have to ask Coma when she wakes up.
…Hey, was it just me, or did you hear something too? It sounded like someone was mumbling. Maybe I was just talking to myself aga- No there it is again. Where…Coma?
She felt like she was floating in endless darkness. It had been the same way the past few times she could remember, along with an agonizing pain all over her body that had gradually lessened with each awakening. Sometimes she could hear faint voices that she couldn't understand, other times she could feel something being poured down her throat that felt disgusting, but was filling all the same. Every time however she could always see a faint light shimmering into existence in the far distance after some time, provided she could stay conscious long enough. Something told her she should go towards this light, and she had attempted each time the light appeared, but in the end she would always succumb to the exhaustion and pain weighing down her body and drift off into slumber again, getting further with each try, but never quite there. This time however, something was different…She could hear the voices more clearly, a girl's voice, telling her to wake up; she could also feel someone gripping her by her shoulders and shaking her rather roughly, and though a bit disorienting, the light did grow brighter with each shake, as if it was coming closer. She could do it this time, she thought, she could reach the light! Despite the pain and exhaustion that grew with each step she took, she would endure, she would not be defeated, not when someone was waiting for her!
Wait for me! I'm coming, Mutsuki!
"W…Wha?"
"COMA, YOU'RE AWAKE! YESSSS! How're you feeling? Does it still hurt? Are you hungry? Thirsty? Just tell me anything you need, and whatever you do, DON'T go back to sleep!"
Oww, her ears…She could hear the voice much clearer now, a little too clear considering the relative quietness up to this point. Unfortunately, whoever this other person was, she wasn't Mutsuki. Besides her hearing, the pain and tiredness also intensified, and it took her quite a bit of struggle to not faint once more. Not only that, but even though she was supposedly awake, she still couldn't see anything…something had been wrapped over her eyes, that was unmistakable, but the strange part was she couldn't move her eyes at all, and every time she tried it felt like her eyeballs were being stung with burning needles…
"E-Excuse me, miss…but where am I…and why can't I see?"
"Heheh, well then, Coma, let me formally welcome you to my Island Paradise in the Middle of Nowhere, population, you and I! As for why you can't see, your eyes were badly damaged by some kind of sharp object, likely shrapnel, and I don't really have the means to fix them. Sorry about that."
Coma? Ahh, she must've been in a coma all this time. Now she remembered, she had been hit by a kamikaze Abyssal plane during the battle. The last thing she remembered was sinking into the depths…it seems Lady Luck was on her side this time and the ocean swept her to safety. So, if she had been in a coma, how long has it…
"Could you…please tell me what…date it is?"
"No idea. It's been just over a week since I found you if that helps any."
A week…it could've been a lot worse. It was still possible she was adrift for days before she was found, but for now, maybe she should try and get to know her savior first.
"Th-Thanks for…saving me, Miss…?"
"Yeah, I'm the one who picked you up off the beach and nursed you back from the brink of death if that's what you're wondering, so you're thanking the right person~"
"No…I know you saved me and I…thank you for it. I was…trying to ask your name."
"Oh. Hmm, name…huh. I don't have one."
Kisaragi would've raised an eyebrow if her eyes didn't still hurt so much from every little movement. "You don't have a name…?"
"I probably had one at some point but I can't remember now. Hell, I can't remember much of anything! I was hoping to ask YOU who I am actually!"
An amnesiac? Come to think of it, population you and I, this person seems to be stranded on this island as well. If she thought about how she got here…
"Is something wrong, Coma? You didn't fall asleep again did you?"
"No, I'm fine…and my name's not Coma, it's Kisaragi…May I ask you how long you've…been on this island?"
"About two weeks. Kisaragi…that sounds cute, but it's kind of a mouthful. Can I call you Ki?"
"S-Sure…" Even Mutsuki wouldn't call her something so informal, but she didn't mind. Two weeks, that confirms it then. Overseas travel for humans beyond heavily escorted convoys have all but ceased since the Abyssals appeared, if she's only been here for two weeks, then she must be a Fleet Girl too! Just to be sure…
"I think I might know who…what you are. Just tell me, can you walk on water?"
"Of course! Can't everyone do that?"
"No, not everyone. You're a Fleet Girl, like me."
"A Fleet Girl…? Who made that name? Sounds pretty boring, unlike Kisaragi, even if it's less of a mouthful. Ki-sa-ra-gi…Seriously, it's musical even. Ki-sa-ra-gi, Ki-sa-ra-gi, Ki-saaaa~ Ra-giiii~!"
She sure was saved by a weird one, Kisaragi thought to herself while her mystery savior sung a rather familiar tune using her name, but weird in a cute way. If only she could see what her nameless nurse looked like. Her voice sounded about Tenryuu's age, but slightly less deep, closer to Tatsuta but not quite as sinister. Perhaps she could find a way to bring both of them back to the naval base? She has no idea where they are on the map though, and with her eyes like this…
"So…what's a Fleet Girl besides someone who can walk on water?"
"Ah, yes, you must've forgotten from your amnesia. To put it in simple terms, us Fleet Girls are cybernetically and genetically enhanced humans created by the military."
"Huh. So we're like supersoldiers?"
"Precisely. We were created to combat the Abyssals, creatures similar to us that come from the sea."
"The Abyssals? Now THAT'S a cool name! Seriously, if we're fighting things called the Abyssals we should be called Abyss Slayers or something! The Abyslayers! So why are we fighting them anyway?"
Abyss Slayers, sounded like something a certain chuuni Light Cruiser would come up with.
"Hmm, little is known about these creatures, only that they are vicious monsters that attack any ships or even coastal areas they come across. Ever since they've appeared, almost all transport across ocean areas have been forced to stop, essentially cutting off all non-electronic interactions between continents."
"And these Abyssals are so tough they needed to make us to kill them?"
"In a way, yes. Conventional weaponry has existent, but very limited effect on them, where even missiles are needed to seriously wound the weakest of the Abyssals. However, us Fleet Girls and the weapons we use are capable of dealing proper damage to these creatures for some reason, so we're sent out to fight them."
"What, you guys don't even know WHY you can hurt them?"
"The researchers on the Fleet Girl project should know, but it's highly confidential. I'm not sure if the Admiral does, I've tried my best to coax it out of her, but she just won't tell…"
"Admiral…?"
"Yes, our commander, Admiral Tsubaki."
At that, the Fleet Girl frowned a little. Admiral and everyone else must be worried sick about her, it was likely she'd even be pronounced sunken by now. Poor Mutsuki…she appreciated how much her sister cared for her, but for once she wished they weren't quite that close. Her sister wouldn't take the news of her sinking well, not at all…
"N-No, I know what an Admiral is. Hey don't frown at me all disapprovingly like that, it's just that I got a really vague flashback when you said that word. Hey, what's this Tsubaki person like? That name sounds refined, like...like a princess!"
The Fleet Girl giggled and shook her head. Admiral Tsubaki as regal royalty...no, just no. "Oh she's anything but refined, but despite her interests she's a good person. I think it's better that way, she's more fun to be around than *yawn* other Admirals…"
"A-Are you getting tired? Do you need anything, water, food, just say it! Just stay awake!"
Her mystery savior grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her again, which only made her more dizzy, but she just smiled and gently brushed the amnesiac's hands away. "No, I just need a little rest…Don't worry, I promise I won't fall into another coma."
"You better not, or you're not getting dinner tonight!"
Kisaragi couldn't help but chuckle at the half-joking threat. How fun it'd be if she could bring her caretaker back with her to the naval base! No doubt Tenryuu would appreciate the extra help around too. The question now lay in how she was going to get back, but she can think about it when she wakes up again. Tired out from the conversation, she relaxed and drifted off to peaceful slumber.
Kisaragi woke up! That's Coma's real name by the way. All my hard work finally paid off~ She's back in dreamland for now, but we had a really nice conversation while we could.
So, to summarize what we talked about, I'm a "Fleet Girl". I still prefer Abyslayer. Anyway, essentially I'm some kind of supersoldier built to combat dangerous monsters called the Abyssals, not to fight some kind of war. This is AWESOME news! I mean, that means I'm a monster hunter, how cool is that? That also explains why I owned those wolves and other assorted beasties so easily. I wonder what the Abyssals look like? Large, sharp claws and fangs, dark themed, maybe sort of shadowy with glowing parts...Come to think of it, that big monster when I woke up might've been one…
What I'm getting from connecting the dots is, that dream was a flashback to a previous battle where I got hit by something and was knocked out, and judging from the dream, Ki's wounds and even the holes in the cruise ship, whatever these Abyssals are probably have cannons and other explosive ordinance. What did that big monster have? CANNONS. Plus, dwelling at the bottom of the ocean, its body made out of black metal with glowing red markings, bigass teeth, all that just screams "ABYSSAL" to me. That doesn't explain why it helped me back to the surface though…Ki said they're basically bloodthirsty monsters attacking anything and everything, so why didn't that one try to finish the job? Unless it's one of those rare gentleman monsters that pick you up, dust you off and give you a pat on the back saying "I say, good show, ol' chap! What say I treat you to some tea and crumpets, m'lady?" after beating the shit out of you, something's not matching up here. I mean, it wasn't even wearing a top hat!
Also, something flashed through my mind when Ki was talking about her Admiral. It's REALLY vague and hazy, but I could tell there was a man in a military uniform there, sitting on a sofa with me, and for a moment I felt a very strange sense of…I don't know, it was loneliness but also not? It kind of felt like when I longed for someone to keep me company, but also not quite. That guy was probably the one who used to be my Admiral. Wonder what kind of person he was? Shy, charming, intelligent...Then again, considering he's a brass he's probably just some guy who sits in his office all day pushing papers and sometimes making battle plans while we go out and get any real shit done. Right now I'm more interested in who my comrades were, like that green haired girl in my dream.
Now that Miss Coma's back in the land of the living and does not in fact have amnesia, I wonder what we'll do now? I suppose Ki's priority will be getting the two of us rescued, but I have no idea how. It's not like we can make a giant help sign on the beach for passing planes to see with the Abyssals shooting shit. Eh, I'll just discuss with Ki when she wakes up again, we'll come up with something. For now I'm going to get some shut-eye too, maybe when I wake up she'll be nice and refreshed and ready for more conversation time!
