Author Note

Here is the second to last chapter for you all!

You'll notice that Liam and Rose play a large part of this chapter. Liam and Rose are staples of the 'How it should have been' saga which this story belongs to so you will see them pop up a great deal in any story which fits into that. I really like them and I hope you do as well!

Please enjoy this chapter. I plan to have the last chapter up in the next few days!

Chapter Four

Danni breathed out slowly, ignoring the way the room swum around her and instead focused her full attention on her task of pulling her dress on, straightening it automatically once it was on. If her twin had been unable to retrieve her child from his father then the task would have to fall to her instead, flu or no flu.

While David had been right when he had pointed out that the Five-O offices were one of the safest places to be, he had not taken into account that it was still a place where Oliver had never been before and one which she had been hoping he would never need to step into until he was much older.

She knew how important Steve's job was to him and she supported him a hundred percent, making sure never to comment or to react to all the occasions when they were meant to do something together or as a family only to have to cancel it or go on without Steve due to a case coming through which needed him. That support however did not extend into him taking any of their children to his work place where she knew from personal experience that there were more often then not pictures of dead bodies and crime scenes on display. The type of things which she was determined not to allow their children to witness or experience while she still had a say in the matter.

Danielle had assumed that Steve had been on the same page as her and that it was something which they wouldn't have to discuss but clearly after what she had seen on the TV screen, she was wrong and would need to have that conversation with him after all.

A knock at the door attracted her attention away from her thoughts, she twisted around, blinking in surprise to see Liam at the door. She hadn't even been aware that he was back from the school run yet.

"Hiya Liam, I didn't realise you were back, is something up? Everything went well with the drop offs right?" She asked, a feeling of concern growing in her, a feeling which eased when he shook his head at her.

"Everything went without a hitch as usual" He assured her with a soft smile. "I was just checking in on you to make sure you're okay and to let you know I was back for the time being." Danni watched him for a second before she shook her head.

"Steve asked you to check in on me, right?" She commented, watching the awkward look which briefly crossed his dace.

"He might have made that request" Liam admitted with a shrug.

"There's a surprise, when did you speak to him?" She asked him, clearly a tone to her voice which caused him to frown.

"I spoke to him earlier on at breakfast" He told her, sounding almost cautious as though he was no longer certain of what he was getting himself into and was already regretting his decision to do as Steve asked.

"What exactly did he say to you at breakfast?" She demanded, a small voice in her mind telling her that she was perhaps being unreasonable and that Liam wasn't the person who she should be taking her annoyance out on.

"He asked me to check on you and to help you if you needed anything before, he got back from work" Liam responded with a tilt of his head, his frown growing. "I feel like I've missed something here, is there something I should know?" He asked her.

"No, nothing, I'm sorry Liam." She said giving him a smile. "I shouldn't have grilled you about what Steve said to you, there is something you could help me with though."

"Yeah? What is it?" Liam asked, clearly eagerly grabbing onto the change in topic.

"If you want to help me then you can head out the front and start the car up and drive me down to the Five-O headquarters so I can collect Ollie from Steve and bring him back here where he should be." She stated, flashing him another smile though she was positive her eyes remained watchful.

Liam blinked at her in surprise before he slowly shook his head.

"Look Danni, I know that you want to go racing in but you can't right now. In case it's escaped your notice, you have the flu or something equally as nasty at the moment. The only place you should be right now is in bed, resting and trying to build up some strength and keep some water down so you don't become dehydrated. I'm sure anyone would tell you the same thing. You shouldn't be asking me to take you down to the Five-O headquarters."

Danni crossed her arms over her chest, glaring up at the tall man and ignoring that same voice from earlier, which was growing harder and harder to ignore, which was now agreeing with what Liam was saying to her.

"Whether I have the flu or not is completely irrelevant right now. The only thing I care about at this moment in time is the fact that my youngest child is currently away from me right now and is at my husband's work place instead, which for the record Liam is not a place where a child should ever be, especially when the child in question is only three months old. Ollie has a strict routine in place as you well know. That routine cannot be done where he is now which means that he is going to become extremely upset if he's not already upset." She stated, sweeping her hand through the air.

She watched as Liam glanced away from her, reaching up with his hand and running it through his dark hair, an action which told her that he was wavering slightly at the thought of Oliver being upset.

"Danni" he said finally, stopping when Danni spoke over him.

"You know what Ollie is like Liam, he needs to have his routine, if his routine is different then he is going to grow increasingly upset regardless of whether Steve is there with him or not. The fact that Steve is his Dad won't change that fact, if anything it's only going to end up confusing him further because Steve isn't a part of his day to day routine unless it's a weekend due to his job."

"Be that as it may Danni you can't underestimate Steve, he is going to do what is best for Ollie, he loves him." Liam pointed out. The remark bringing Danni up short.

"I'm not saying that Steve won't do what is best for Ollie on any normal day but bringing him to the crime scene for a triple homicide is not doing what is best for Ollie. If he wanted to do what was best for our son then he would have gotten Danny to drop him off at headquarters with Ollie first and stayed there with him, running the case from the office."

Liam remained silent for a moment, a look on his face which made a small smile curve her mouth before he spoke.

"You're not going to rest until Ollie is back in this house right?" He asked, sighing when she nodded at him. "Fine then, I'll go and get him myself while you stay here resting. What's best for Ollie right now is not to be exposed to what you have which is what is going to happen if you go. If I go then he has less of a chance to catch it, plus Steve will trust me with him."

"That's… that's a good plan" Danni admitted after a moment of silence.

"I know it is" Liam stated. "And it would have been the plan which you would have come up with yourself if you weren't sick with the flu and not thinking properly. Now get back into bed Danni, don't make me have to tell Steve that you aren't resting because we both know he's going to ask me that and we both know how he's going to react if I tell him that you aren't." He told her firmly, pointing at the bed with a stern look.,

"I thought you were the children's nanny, not mine." Danni remarked, moving towards the bed automatically.

"It appears I have to be yours and Steve's nanny as well to stop the pair of you being stupid sometimes." He replied with a shake of his head, waiting long enough to see her climb into bed before he turned and headed out of the room and down the stairs, looking towards Rose when she appeared in the doorway of the living room.

"How did it go?" She asked.

"Finally got her to get back into bed" Liam told the old woman with a roll of his eyes. "God she is stubborn when she is sick. I've got to head off to Steve's job to get Ollie, it's the only way Danni will rest which Steve should have thought of himself."

"You know what Steve gets like when Danni is sick, he can only think of her, I have no doubt that he brought Ollie with him with the best of intentions though taking him to the crime scene quite possibly wasn't his greatest ideas." Rose said.

"That might be an understatement" Liam pointed out. "You take care of Danni and the twins, I'll go and get the little man and bring him back here."

"I'll watch them all like a hawk, I'll make Danni some peppermint tea as well, it may help to settle her stomach." Rose agreed with a nod.

"Sounds good" Liam said before the sound of the door opening attracted both their attention. They looked towards it, surprised to see Steve entering, holding Oliver in his arms and clearly trying to soothe the distraught baby.

"Steve" Rose said in surprise before she moved, stopping in front of the man and taking Oliver from him before he could react. "Sounds like this little man is tired, I'll go and put him down for his nap, did you manage to give him his bottle?" She demanded, waiting only long enough for Steve to nod before she turned and swept away from them and up the stairs.

"Danny send you home?" Liam asked, raising an eyebrow when Steve looked over at him with a blink,

"Yeah, I'll be working from my office." Steve said from a pause, the comment causing Liam to nod.

"Probably what you should have done this morning." he remarked, holding up his hands in a peaceful manner when Steve glared at him. "Hey, you're the boss but I still just call it as I see it." He stated.

"I couldn't get Ollie to settle" Steve admitted, sounding concerned.

"That's the joy of the McGarrett kid routine" Liam commented. "Danni is skilled at settling them into the routine but take them away from it and they are never going to settle, regardless of who is trying to do it. Even I couldn't settle Ollie and I'm a part of his usual routine so don't be so hard on yourself."

"Thanks Liam, I'll be in my office if I'm needed" Steve said, raising an eyebrow when Liam stepped in his way.

"Mind if I speak my mind?" He asked Steve, who nodded with a frown.

"You've been here long enough Liam that you're like family, you don't have to ask permission to speak to me normally." Steve stated firmly, clapping his hand on Liam's shoulder and squeezing down on it, a waiting expression on his face.,

"You know that I rarely get involved when it comes to you and Danni, normally because there's no need to but on this occasionally, I really think you would do better to go and speak to her before you get lost in your work. She was really not happy when she saw you on the TV with Ollie at the crime scene." He said, catching the wince which Steve tried to hide.

"Ah… she saw that then?" Steve asked.

"Afraid so, I just had to convince her not to storm down to your headquarters to get Ollie back from you, in fact you've stopped me making an unnecessary trip because the only way I could convince her to rest was to agree to go down and get him myself."

"Ollie was completely safe Liam" Steve pointed out, sounding slightly annoyed.

"I know that and you know that but Danni isn't exactly thinking clearly at the moment and she doesn't quite see it the way we do which is why you should go and speak to her and let her know that Ollie is home so that she will rest." Liam said. "I'll keep an eye on the twins until Rose is back, we'll then take them and Ollie to the supermarket when Ollie is awake again to get the food for the week."

"Right" Steve said, glancing towards the stairs before he looked back at Liam. "Thanks for the heads up, I'll go and talk to Danni now"

"Good luck" Liam replied with a smile, watching as Steve turned away from him and headed up the stairs before he turned and headed into the living room, muttering to himself as he did. "Because you're going to need it."
