Amnesia
Day number two of Maka being in the hospital.
Soul awoke to the sound of his cellphone's vibrating alarm, and untangled himself from his children before tucking his pillows around them, and getting up to take a quick shower. He only allowed himself ten minutes to scrub down, before he jumped out, pulled on some sweats, and headed to the kitchen to make both breakfast and lunch for the kids.
He nearly jumped out of his skin when a blood curdling scream suddenly pierced the peaceful quiet, and he dropped the sandwich in his hand and ran straight to his bedroom.
"Yuna-Zell!" He shouted as he damn near knocked the door down.
"Papa! I didn't do anything-he just started screaming and crying!" Yuna squeaked as she crawled to the foot of the bed, where Soul stopped and stood staring down at her.
He turned his attention to his son, who was so worked up that he was literally turning purple.
"Come here Zell…you're okay…" Soul sighed softly when he only rolled onto his face and continued to wail. He sat down on the bed, grabbed the baby by the legs and gently dragged him so he was laying on his back in front of him.
"Son… It's okay…I know you miss your Mama, and I'm sorry she can't be here right now, but I promise she'll be back…" He spoke calmly as he rubbed soothing circles on Zell's little stomach.
He knew the baby couldn't really understand what he was saying, but he spoke more to comfort his daughter, who had come to sit next to him, and himself.
Zell hiccupped and his cries started to die down, and Yuna, using a corner of her night shirt, reached up and gently wiped his face clean.
They didn't speak again until the little boy had stopped crying completely.
"That's better… there's no need to cry…you're okay, Yuna's okay, and Mama is going to be okay…" Soul spoke as he picked the little boy up and sat him in his lap.
Yuna frowned and looked up at her father-opening her mouth, before changing her mind and looking down at her lap.
"What's wrong squirt?" Soul asked as he dropped his hand down onto his daughter's blonde head.
Yuna paused, seeming to be struggling with herself.
"Yuna?"
She picked up her head and focused her gaze on her brother, and letting him take one of her little fingers into his chubby hand.
"Papa…. Do you really think Mama will be okay?"
Of course he had his own doubts and concerns about Maka and when she would wake up-if at all, but as he looked into his daughter eyes, he realized that for the sake of his children, who were both still so small… he would have to put his worries aside.
"Yeah… You know your Mama… she's the strongest woman I know. I know she's gonna be alright." Soul faked a smirk as he ruffled his daughter's hair, making her giggle.
"Don't you two worry about Mama anymore… Everything will be alright…" He sighed, trying to make himself believe what he was saying.
He couldn't afford to imagine things turning out any other way… not when he had two small children depending on him.
He sighed again and kissed both his children's foreheads.
He hoped he would be right.
After Soul finished calming the kids down, he quickly fed, bathed and dressed them, then packed them and their stuff into the car before dropping them off at his cousin-in-law Blair's house. Soul got them settled, and promised Yuna he would be back by five, before he left and headed straight to the hospital.
Once again, he was sent to speak to the doctor first.
Upon entering the office, he found that the doctor wasn't there, and after a brief mental battle, he decided to sit and wait for him rather than heading off to see his wife. About fifteen minutes passed before the doctor showed up, and when he walked through the door, there was an alarmingly grim look on his face.
"Something's wrong." Soul groaned, sinking into his seat.
"I come bearing good new, and unfortunately, bad news too... the good news is, Maka's awake."
Soul hooted and jumped out of his seat.
"So why are we not already down there?! Let's go-"
The doctor smiled awkwardly and raised his hand, cutting Soul off.
"…What?" Soul frowned.
"I'm sorry Mr. Evans, but your wife has amnesia. She believes she's sixteen, and-"
Soul nearly knocked over his chair as he rushed to get across the room and to the door. "I need to see her!"
"Mr. Evans-Please stop and just listen! If you go in that room hysterical and causing a scene, than it's only going to push her even further over the edge…when Maka was informed that her husband is waiting to see her, she immediately went into a fit of hysteria! I didn't even get to tell her your name! You have to calm down or else…she's in too fragile a state for us to risk shocking her anymore, and let's not forget the baby…" The doctor explained as he motioned for Soul to come back into the room and sit back down.
After a pained glance at the door, he reluctantly did as the doctor asked.
Hunching forward in his seat and resting his elbows on his knees, Soul muttered. "So…what do you recommend we do? We can't just not say anything…Maka is my wife and the mother of my two, soon to be three, children…She's a grown woman, with a family, and a job…"
"Mr. Evans, I understand… and we will tell her what the reality is…but first. We need to calm her down…Now-"
Doctor Adagio was cut off by a nurse suddenly busting into the office looking frantic and frazzled.
Soul shot upright in his seat, and both he and the doctor turned to look at her.
"Sir! It's Mrs. Evans-She won't stop screaming, and we can't even get close enough to give her a sedative! She stabbed Nurse Marie when she tried to approach her with the needle. And she just keeps screaming at the top of her lungs about a soul!" The petite brunette nurse squeaked.
The doctor froze, and Soul just looked up at him blankly.
Dr. Adagio threw a hand up in the air, and sighed heavily. "Well we better get down there…" He motioned for Soul to follow him as he ushered the nurse out of the office ahead of him.
"Mr. Evans, you must remember, you cannot surprise her any more than she already is…"
Soul grunted. "Got it."
"Sir?" The nurse asked as she followed the two men down the hall.
"Mrs. Evans will not be needing a sedative…and her screaming about 'a soul' was not nonsense. Her husband's name is Soul. She's looking for him." He explained shortly.
In the room, they were greeted with complete chaos.
There was a total of four nurses grappling with Maka, who though terribly battered and looking absolutely wild, was backed up against the beds headboard, holding her own rather well, using her good arm and a dirty needle.
"WHAT the hell is going on in here?! Everyone stop!" The doctor yelled.
Making no move to stop trying to restrain Maka, the staff immediately broke out into loud protest.
"Doctor she's dangerous-if she's not sedated, than she will hurt someone! She already stabbed Marie!" One of the male nurses argued.
"I said, stand down! In fact, all of you leave….I have all the help I will need, and you all are just making matters worse." He ordered as he stepped aside to let them pass through. "And Marie, go get yourself cleaned up." The doctor ordered that last nurse still standing by the foot of the bed, glaring daggers at Maka.
"Go. Now." He pointed, making her turn and finally scurry out the door, still glaring all the way.
When the room was completely empty, aside from Maka, the doctor, Maka's personal nurse, and Soul; Dr. Adagio quietly shut the door, before turning to look at Maka, who was still pressed against the top of the bed, on high alert, with the needle in hand.
No one said anything for a long moment.
"Maka….I've brought Soul to see you." Doctor Adagio stated calmly.
The nurse and Soul looked on nervously as Maka slowly turned her stare onto Soul. After a long moment, she looked back at the doctor, glaring.
"Do you think I'm stupid?" She hissed, tossing the dirty needle to the floor, and letting her hand drop back to the bed. "That is not Soul. Soul is only eighteen years old. He does not look that old. Clearly that is his older brother Wesley."
Soul frowned, but the doctor continued on without missing a beat.
"I'm sorry Maka, but you are mistaken…This IS Soul…It is not 1998-It's 2014..."
The color drained from Maka's face, and she quickly turned her eyes back onto Soul. All it took was for them to make eye contact for her to begin trembling, and shaking her head no. The nurse stepped forward to sedate her, but Dr. Adagio gently tugged her back.
Maka frantically looked up at the doctor. "You have to be lying-it can't be…I'm only 16!"
"I'm sorry…But no. Maka, Mr. Evans is 34, and you are 32….you were in a car accident the other night and you were hurt badly. The accident put you were in a coma."
With tears streaming down her face, Maka spoke with a thick voice. "But-if that's true, than why don't I remember any of that? Why don't I remember all those years passing?"
The doctor smiled sadly, and pulled a handkerchief out of one of his pockets; stepping forward and offering it to her.
"Maka, when you had your accident, you hit your head. You have amnesia…I'm sorry."
Maka cried harder, and the only person to say anything was the nurse, who brought her a cup of water, and had taken to rubbing her back and muttering soft words of encouragement until she was calm.
Maka hiccupped and raised her swollen, red-rimmed eyes to the doctor again. "Earlier I was told that my husband, is waiting to see me…Where is he…?" She grimaced; obviously terrified to meet her spouse. The doctor without so much as blinking, walked over to Soul who was still hunched by the door, and shoved him forward.
"There."
Maka's eyes rounded, and she began to tremble all over again.
"….Soul?"
He cleared his throat and scratched the back of his head. "Yeah."
"This is really Soul-" Dr. Adagio nodded. "And I really married him?"
Both the doctor and Soul nodded again, and the nurse tensed when Maka flopped against her pillows.
She covered her face with her hand.
"I need to know everything…. Just tell me now."
"I'm sorry Maka, but doing that could send you into shock-"
"Well Doc, I'm pretty damn sure that I'm already in shock." She snapped, still not moving her arm.
"If not everything, than just tell me the most important things that I need to know for now."
Soul and the doctor exchanged glances, before he sighed and nodded, then shifted on his feet.
"Well…I've been cancer free for fourteen years now. And around the time that I was dealing with the worst of it, you moved away to live with your aunt Marie. You went to college while you were gone, and studied to be a lawyer. And when I got well enough, I took a few classes at the community college, and got a business degree. When you were twenty-three, you came to find me, and never left. We married two years later, after you graduated. We stayed in Ohio for a while before moving here. Death City, Nevada. After having worked steadily for two years, as a successful lawyer, you got pregnant with our first child." Maka shook and tried to stifle a sob.
"A little girl named Yuna….three years later…. You gave birth to our second child-" She gave up on trying to fight her cries. "A baby boy named Zell."
Soul sniffed and ran a hand through his messy hair.
"And yesterday….I was informed, that you are pregnant with our third child."
Maka sobbed and put her good hand to her stomach before shaking her head; overwhelmed with a mixture of shock and disbelief.
When Soul finally let his eyes drop from her face to his shoes, she shook one last time before fainting.
A.N: Hi, two things. First, I know it's been a long time, but I just lost sight of where both of my stories were going. I've got an idea now, but I can't say how long it will last. Until writers block hits again I suppose (because it always does), I'll do my best to type as much as I can before that happens though.
And second, in regards to this story, there are a few mistakes that I made while typing the previous chapters…I did my best to catch them all and make the appropriate changes, but I'm sure there's something I missed. Just in case you don't feel like going back to reread, the biggest one I caught was Yuna being six, when she's actually supposed to be four, according to my math. So I changed her age to four, and adjusted some of her dialogue to be more age appropriate. Zell is still a year old however.
If you happen to spot any other mistakes or typos, than I would appreciate you pointing them out in a PM.
Thanks, and until next time.
