South Tribe

The South Tribe came back in terrible spirits. Donkey Kong, Pichu, and Mr. Game and Watch in particular looked like they were going to cry. When they entered camp, Lucario pulled Donkey Kong away to speak in private.

"You did well," Lucario congratulated. "I understand your pain-"

"I can't believe I did that!" Donkey Kong whispered in shock. "I can't believe you convinced me to do that!"

"I know. You will feel sorrow now. I feel terrible myself; Peach was a kind and noble person, and she will be missed. But in the end, we are stronger, and you, Donkey Kong, have cemented your position in the alliance."

"I don't think it was worth it," Donkey Kong shook his head.

"Think of the future, then," offered Lucario. "You want to reunite with Diddy Kong, correct?"

At that, Donkey Kong's head perked up. "Of course. I can't believe… I forgot he was on another tribe!"

Lucario smiled pleasantly. "Eventually we will merge into a single tribe. With you on our side, you will guarantee that you will see Diddy Kong again."

That small hope calmed Donkey Kong down. He managed to smile. "Thank you. I really needed that."

Meanwhile, Link and Toon Link were in an intense private discussion of their own.

"It was you!" Toon Link whispered, seething. "Why would you do that? How could you?"

"What are you talking about?" Link whispered back. "You're being so vague!"

"You voted for Peach!" Toon Link said. "She got six votes! There's a six person alliance, and you're part of it!"

"Are you kidding?" Link replied. "How could I be in an alliance? I've been with you the entire time!"

"The first day, when I was getting water," Toon Link reminded him. "I was away for over an hour. That's plenty of time to get into an alliance."

"And when could I have talked with them?"

"You could've found a way!"

"Well I didn't," stated Link. "I don't know why you blame me."

"Because you turned to me during Tribal Council and said that Metaknight had a good point about the party being a distraction."

"I regretted it as soon as I said anything," Link admitted. "I… I voted for Metaknight after that. I couldn't trust him."

Toon Link stared at him. "Well, so did Pichu."

"And who did you vote for?"

"Lucario. I don't trust him," answered Toon Link.

Link considered the options. Peach had to have voted for Metaknight. That meant that the other six voted for her. He looked around the camp, where the others were having a quiet meal. Six of them voted for Peach for no reason. Donkey Kong? Mr. Game and Watch? They voted for her too?

"Should we… ask them?" Link asked.

Toon Link shook his head. "No, no, we can't. If they're in an… alliance."

Link had seen Fox and Lucario sneaking off. He had thought that they were suspicious, and now he had a good reason. "Fox and Lucario are. But I can't believe that they convinced everyone to vote for her!"

"They didn't," Toon Link reasoned. "You heard Metaknight at Tribal Council; he thought what Peach was doing was a distraction. He probably voted for her without talking to them."

"Then there's still a chance," Link sighed in relief. "We need to talk to Pit and Metaknight. We need to convince them to join us before it's too late."

"I don't know about Metaknight," said Toon Link with concern. "He doesn't like our alliance."

"We have to give it a chance."

Toon Link finally nodded. "Okay. We'll talk with them tomorrow."

Day 4

East Tribe

The night ended with little discussion; the challenge had ended so quickly for them that they barely registered that they won. They congratulated Mewtwo on simply carrying the flags up to the top, but other than that they had their meal and went to bed. In the morning, the routine continued. Once they had all woken up and had their meal, they immediately split into the two alliances. ROB went off on his own, choosing neither side.

"It's time to pull off your brilliant plan," Ganondorf said. "You've spent enough time procrastinating. Get ROB to our side."

"Hmm?" Wolf muttered, and then he remembered his boast from the previous days. "Oh yeah, that thing. Yeah, I'll get him. Just give me some more-"

Ganondorf punched a nearby tree, nearly splintering it. It bent backward and stopped, tilted, with a large chunk of it blown throughout the clearing. Wolf and King Dedede leapt in surprise.

"Now."

That was all it took. Wolf ran off into the jungle to find the robot. Some time later, Wolf returned towing ROB. ROB looked confused, staring at each of them in turn. Ganondorf stared down at him, and Mewtwo looked unimpressed; King Dedede was the only one to give a small smile.

"So he's on our side already?" King Dedede asked.

"No," Wolf admitted. "I… uh… wanted ROB to see our entire alliance to know what we stand for."

Ganondorf turned his disappointed gaze to Wolf. "If you're going to lie to me, do it well. I dislike being disappointed."

Wolf tried his best not to look submissive. He stood tall and proud as he returned Ganondorf's glare. "I didn't want to be the one to screw up our game."

Ganondorf sneered. "Don't worry. There's still time for you to ruin our chances."

"So, ROB," King Dedede said loudly, and the robot turned to him curiously. "How are you liking things on the island?"

ROB considered his question curiously while King Dedede's alliance stared at him in confusion. Eventually, ROB's eyes lit up happily. Without being able to speak, that was all he could convey. With nothing else to go on, King Dedede let out a quick cough to disrupt the silence and responded.

"Oh, good, I'm glad you're enjoying things. If you'd… like to stay on the island and enjoy it more, we'd like to make you a deal."

Ganondorf leaned over to Wolf and whispered, "It looks like the penguin just went up on the food chain. He's doing your job for you."

That got Wolf's blood boiling. He walked over to King Dedede and grinned pleasantly at ROB. "Yeah, it's a really good deal. It's one that only we can make."

"We'd like for you to vote with us in upcoming Tribal Councils," King Dedede added. "It's really simple. We tell you to vote for, and you vote for that person."

ROB looked sadly through the jungle at where the other alliance was chatting. Wolf managed to see the sadness and continued, "It's hard. None of us really want to do it. But we'll have to do it eventually. It might as well be us going, and not them."

Ganondorf whispered to Mewtwo as they watched the pair, "Can't you just mind control ROB into doing what we want?"

"Of course not," Mewtwo answered. "Otherwise this game would be trivial. Nobody would vote to eliminate me."

"What? Is it a moral thing or can you just not do it?"

Mewtwo stared at him. "I would demonstrate to answer, but I do not want repercussions."

Ganondorf snorted in amusement. "So it's fear." He shrugged. "At least I know you aren't infallible."

"I never implied otherwise."

ROB had considered their offer for several minutes. Wolf's fake smile had fallen into a small snarl, while King Dedede held his in the hope it would help. Finally, ROB slowly nodded his head.

"Good choice," King Dedede said. "You won't regret it. Some of us may be… hard to work with, but we're strong, and we'll use our strength to make it far."

"You can't speak," Wolf said. "So you can't say anything to anger us. You just do what we tell you, and everything will be fine."

ROB hesitated, and then he nodded again. He almost immediately regretted his decision, but it was too late for him to leave.

Meanwhile, the other alliance had noticed that they were alone. Mario had looked around camp and saw no trace of the other half of their tribe.

"They're gone," Mario declared as he sat back down with the others. He had a terrible feeling, a pain in his stomach that he had made a terrible mistake. "Even ROB. They're all gone."

"I don't like that," Pokémon Trainer muttered. "I really don't like that."

Diddy Kong turned to Lucas. "You did talk with ROB, right?"

Lucas jumped. "Of… of course I did! I talked… a lot with him!"

"You did discuss him joining us, right?" Ike asked.

"Yes!" Lucas said, and then immediately shook his head. "No! I didn't know… there was an alliance… I just thought we didn't want to talk to them." Tears welled up in his eyes. "I didn't… there… I made a mistake!"

"No, you didn't," Mario decided. "I did."

"We all did," said Ike. "We assumed that ROB was on our side without confirming it sooner."

"We don't know he's not with us," Diddy Kong reasoned. He pointed in one direction. "The others went that way." He pointed in another. "ROB went over there."

"We should assume the worst," said Ike. "They captured ROB and convinced him to join them."

"We can't do that just yet," argued Pokémon Trainer. "ROB would never join them. After how cruel they've been to us in front of him? He knows better!"

"He knows what he's programmed," said Diddy Kong. "Does he really know anything?"

"That's not fair," Lucas cried. "ROB understood everything I told him! I just know it!"

"Then he can be persuaded," reasoned Ike. "He is likely on their side."

"We should look at the bright side," offered Mario, struggling to smile. "If he's with them, then we aren't losing. We're just… even."

"So we have to vote together," said Lucas.

"Otherwise we've definitely lost," added Diddy Kong.

North Tribe

The tribe celebrated their second Immunity Challenge victory with another feast. Olimar persuaded them not to use too much food for this night's meal, as they had gone through a large portion of their supplies in the first few days. Despite several protests, the others eventually saw reason. They enjoyed their night nevertheless; Roy and Samus especially so. They hung around each other all night, eventually saying their goodbyes as everyone else went to sleep, sealing their night with a friendly smile.

When the day began, Samus in her excitement woke Roy awake before the others and asked him to make food. He accepted immediately, and the two went about preparing a small meal. While they were waiting for the fish to cook, Samus leaned her head on Roy's shoulder and looked up at him.

"Last night was great," she said, smiling brightly.

Roy smiled back. "It was," he agreed. "We won the challenge, we had another peaceful night. It's like we're back at the mansion again."

"I miss those beds," Samus complained, rubbing her back. "The hammocks we made aren't comfortable enough for us. I'm too tall; I have to bend my legs to fit in them."

Roy chuckled. "I share the same problem. I blame Yoshi; he made them."

"He doesn't know how to make them human-size."

"We should ask Olimar how he slept," added Roy. "I bet he slept like a baby."

Samus giggled, placing her hand on Roy's arm. "Let's make a plan for today: we'll make a large hammock that both of us can sleep in."

He nodded. "Sounds like a good day to me."

With that decided, they finished the meal and disappeared in the trees to eat. While they were gone, the others woke from the lingering smell. Almost immediately, most of them understood what had happened from the empty hammocks. The only one who was oblivious seemed to be Captain Falcon.

"Have you guys seen Samus?" He asked Yoshi as the latter was cooking his meal. "I need to talk to her about… the… plans for the shelter."

"Sorry, friend," Yoshi shook his head. "I think she left before we woke up."

Captain Falcon sighed. "That's what everyone else said. I wanted to know if you could tell where they went."

Yoshi raised an eyebrow curiously. "What do you mean like that?"

"I don't know," Captain Falcon muttered. "Like you could sense them or something…"

"I can't," Yoshi said flatly, not liking the implication that he was like a bloodhound.

Captain Falcon sensed he hit a nerve, muttered an apology, and walked away. Sonic, who was sitting nearby enjoying his fish, couldn't help but chuckle.

"Poor guy has no idea, does he?"

Yoshi stared at Captain Falcon as he left the camp. "He can't be this oblivious, can he?"

"I mean, you know how long he's been trying to get with Samus?" Sonic asked, grinning. "Longer than I've known you guys."

"But she's had eyes on Roy for months. Everyone else has seen it."

"Love is blind, my friend, love is blind."

It was Yoshi's turn to smirk. "Do you know from experience?"

That immediately quieted Sonic down, and he went back to eating his fish silently.

Meanwhile, the others were eating along the coastline, enjoying the waves. They had also been questioned by Captain Falcon and had given him similar answers. Falco was laughing at his obliviousness.

"The guy's ridiculous," Falco said, shaking his head. "I get he thinks he's in love, but does he have to bother us about it?"

"Don't worry, Falco," Zelda said patronizingly. "You might find love one of these days, provided you change your attitude."

Falco immediately shut his mouth, glaring at her. "Want to come closer and say that again?" Olimar was between the two, and he shifted uncomfortably. "Hey, move over Olimar. I think Zelda wants to have a private chat."

"I would prefer not to," Olimar said, wanting to pacify them. "There is no need to argue. We're doing well."

"We're only doing well until we start losing," Zelda argued. "Once we start, we'll have to start eliminating problems."

"I agree," said Falco, looking over them at Wario. "Hence why I've already made my decision."

Wario laughed. "The only problem here is you, Falco. Everyone else is fine with me."

That wasn't true at all, but the others were too focused on the current argument to comment. Jigglypuff, the only one to actually hear him, shook her head with disappointment. Then Zelda spoke again and got her immediate attention.

"You're on your own," Zelda countered. "You have no idea who anyone else is voting for."

"I'm voting for Falco," Wario chimed in. That got the others' attention.

"Shut up, Wario!" Falco shouted. "Nobody asked you, and frankly nobody cares."

Wario pouted. "That's a mean thing to say. I don't know why you'd say that to me."

"Everyone, please," Olimar pleaded. "There is no need for this!"

Zelda opened her mouth to argue, but she looked into Olimar's eyes and saw the panic. She lowered her head in shame. "You're… you're right."

Falco had opened his mouth to counter, but hearing her response all he could do was blurt out, "What?"

Zelda bit her lip, stifling the argument that was still brewing. "Olimar's right. I… I shouldn't have said anything. I'm sorry, Falco."

"Oh," Falco replied. He stared at her for a moment before continuing, "Yeah. Guess I am too."

Olimar breathed a sigh of relief. It had worked. Jigglypuff looked disappointed that the drama had ended, and Wario looked dismayed.

"Bah," Wario muttered. "That's it? I thought you two were going to fight… or kiss," he chuckled. "Whatever. There's always next time." He got up and walked away.

Zelda looked disgusted. She waited until Wario was out of earshot before adding, "We have other, larger, problems to deal with first."

"Hear hear," Falco nodded.

West Tribe

Popo had led the tribe back to camp in high spirits. He proudly proclaimed that he had carried them to victory and that he had earned his safety. Without waiting for a confirmation, he walked over to the pile of food, picked out some fruits, and disappeared for the rest of the night. The rest of the tribe barely reacted. They had all agreed that Popo had been useful, but his attitude had kept him from true immunity.

The next day, Snake shook Luigi awake. Luigi gasped in surprise before quickly realizing who was waking him.

"Snake?" Luigi whispered groggily. "What are you doing?"

Snake stared at him. "Do you not remember our agreement?"

Luigi had hoped his brief moment of bravery had just been a bad dream. After the challenge, Luigi had asked Snake if he could join him during his morning workout. Snake had shockingly agreed, but they didn't discuss the rest of the night, and Luigi had hoped he had forgotten. He hadn't.

"Oh…" Luigi faked suddenly remembering. "Oh yeah, that. You know, Snake, maybe this wasn't a good idea."

"Very well," Snake started to walk away.

"Wait!" Luigi said, getting to his feet. He wanted nothing more than to go back to sleep, but one annoyed snort from a sleeping Bowser and the fear that it instinctively brought convinced him to go forward. "I'll do it… I'll join you."

Luigi soon regretted his decision. Ten pushups in, he was struggling. Twenty in, he was crying. Fifty in, he couldn't feel his arms. But Snake kept pushing him, sacrificing his own time to make sure Luigi finished. Snake pushed him through the sit ups and especially through the jog. By the end, Luigi was crying, bleeding, barely breathing, but he struggled through it. And as Luigi collapsed in his hammock, Snake felt a small pride in seeing him finish.

After breakfast, Young Link and Popo caught Bowser on his own near the edge of camp. Bowser was scratching something into the trunk of a tree, and he turned around with his claws still bared when they called his name.

"Whoa, whoa!" Young Link jumped in surprise. "Sorry! Didn't mean to scare you!"

"You didn't scare me," said Bowser. He looked at the pair suspiciously. "Since when are you two so chummy?"

"Last night," Popo answered. "Young Link told me how proud he was of me." He smiled graciously. "He's the only one who did it."

"Well, twerp, you may be annoying but you won that idol," said Bowser. "So I'll give that to you."

"We'd like to discuss a potential alliance with you," Young Link continued. "The three of us."

"I thought you were in an alliance with those others," Bowser said, pointing to those sitting around the fire.

"Them?" Young Link scoffed. "I was planning on double crossing them from day one. No, the real alliance is with you."

"That right?" Bowser asked. "Why would I believe you?"

"You have no choice," said Young Link. He put a firm hand on Popo's shoulder and smiled confidently. "Once Popo's gone, you're next. There's nothing you can do about it right now. But if you join my alliance – your only hope – you'll have a chance of making it to the end."

It was Bowser's turn to scoff. "And how are you going to give me that chance?"

Young Link glared at him. "Because I'm going to convince Snake and Luigi to join us."

"Luigi hates me," Bowser stated bluntly. "And Snake wouldn't be convinced by you."

"I'll convince him."

"I doubt it," said Bowser. "You haven't convinced me."

"You don't join us, Bowser, you'll regret it!" Popo warned.

"I'll keep that in mind," Bowser said dismissively as he walked away. He considered letting the failed plan play out naturally. He initially believed Young Link was just tricking him, but there was something in his attitude that rubbed him the wrong way. He considered his option for a moment, and then he walked over to the fire and lifted Ness in the air.

"Hey!" Ness shouted. "What are you doing?"

"We need to talk," said Bowser. He looked at the others, who'd gotten to their feet in preparation to attack. "I'll bring him back in a minute."

Ness sighed once he realized Bowser meant no harm. "It's fine," he said. The three others sat down, although they stared at the pair with concern as they left camp.

Once they were far enough away from camp, Bowser put Ness down and leaned against a tree. The tree creaked and bent in response to the immense weight, but Bowser ignored it.

"I've got something juicy," Bowser chuckled. "I could keep it to myself, but I decided in my good graces to let you know."

Ness crossed his arms, unconvinced. "Is that so?"

"Young Link and Popo just approached me," Bowser said. "Did you know that?"

"Marth noticed them talking to you," Ness replied. "Yes."

"They wanted me to join their alliance."

Ness blinked. "You can't be serious," he chuckled. "Why would he ask you to join our alliance?"

"Not your alliance," Bowser corrected him. "Theirs. Them, me, Luigi, and Snake."

"What? They don't have an alliance."

"Not yet, but Young Link said he'd convince the others to join and then betray you."

Ness considered that for several moments. Finally, he looked Bowser straight in the eyes. "Are you telling me the truth?"

Bowser didn't blink. "I'm telling you the whole truth."

Ness kept staring at him in silence. Finally, he looked at the ground. "I believe you… you're telling the truth…" he kicked nearby rock, considering it curiously. "Why would he do this? He already has an alliance…"

"I don't know," said Bowser. "I'm just the messenger."

Ness looked back up at him. "Don't tell the others." He smiled. "Thank you for the information. You didn't have to tell me."

"I won't tell anyone else." Bowser shrugged. "I figured you've done nothing wrong to me. Why not tell you."

"I'll remember this." Ness promised. "I'll remember this kindness."

Bowser snarled. "Watch it. This ain't a kindness. Now you owe me."

"Of course."

South Tribe

True to their word, the pair of swordsmen woke Pit and Metaknight up and brought them to a clearing. When they were sure they were away from prying eyes, Link began.

"We understand why you voted for her," said Link. "I considered it myself."

"I didn't like voting for her," admitted Pit. Metaknight remained silent, giving Pit a stern glance. Pit continued. "She was really sweet, and her party was a nice idea."

"Interesting word choice," Metaknight couldn't resist. "'Nice' not 'good'."

Pit frowned. "I mean, maybe in a different game it's a good idea." He turned to Link. "Are we going to throw it still? It might cheer us up. Mr. Game and Watch looked horrible."

"He probably looks guilty," said Toon Link. "We think he voted for her also."

Pit and Metaknight shared a look. "Why?" Metaknight asked.

"We know who didn't," answered Link. "Pichu didn't, obviously. Peach didn't, obviously. And Toon Link and I didn't. Everyone else, including Mr. Game and Watch, did."

Metaknight nodded. "Sound logic. Why do you suppose he voted for her?"

"I can't begin to figure out Mr. Game and Watch," Toon Link answered.

"So I guess the party's off, then," Pit joked. "If even Mr. Game and Watch doesn't want it."

"Then last night was worth it," said Metaknight.

"We're getting off topic," said Link. "We wanted to talk to you two about an alliance. The four of us. Maybe Pichu and… and Mr. Game and Watch."

"Why them?" asked Metaknight.

"Pichu's really friendly with us," answered Link. "He helped us a lot the past few days building the party. And Mr. Game and Watch looked so guilty that he'd be willing to make amends. Especially when we tell him we didn't vote for her."

Metaknight then stated the obvious. "That may work for Mr. Game and Watch, but since you didn't vote for Peach, you just admitted that you voted for me."

Link and Toon Link's eyes opened wide in shock. They hadn't considered that option. "Well," Toon Link sputtered. "Well we just… we didn't mean…"

"We're willing to overlook you voting for Peach," Link said quickly. "If you're willing to overlook us voting for you."

Metaknight stared at them in silence. Pit thought that he was going to attack them, he looked so angry. But that turned out to be his normal face, as Metaknight finally said, "Very well. Bygones. I'll join your alliance. I have no others, anyway."

Pit gave him a confused glance as he played along. "Uh… sure, I'll join too. When are you guys going to talk to the others?"

Link sighed heavily in relief. He had also expected Metaknight to release his fury. "Thank you, Metaknight. Really, that means more than you could ever know."

"Of course. You made a mistake," Metaknight replied. "I expect to be repaid in the future."

Metaknight and Pit left the clearing once they had discussed their strategy. They were heading to the other clearing, where they knew the others would be waiting.

"We aren't really joining them, are we?" Pit said.

"I do not know about you," Metaknight replied. "But I could never join them."

"Then why'd you accept?"

"Because this is a game of deception. Believe nothing you hear."

Pit blinked. "But then why would I believe you?"

Metaknight stopped and stood up to place a hand on Pit's shoulder. "You learn quickly."

Pit shrugged the hand off him. "I learn from the best," he grinned.

As they expected, Lucario, Fox, and an exhausted Donkey Kong were waiting for them. They quickly explained what had happened.

"Wow, really?" Donkey Kong gasped. "They don't want me to join?"

"They know we all voted for Peach?" asked Fox. "And they still think you want to join them?"

"For all they know, we were tired of her party plan," reasoned Pit. "I guess they have no idea."

"They have to have some idea," said Fox. He pointed at Lucario. "We talk so much in private."

"This is a better opportunity than I could have hoped," said Lucario. "I had assumed once we played our card they would be much less trusting. They seem to be desperate."

"What do you mean?" asked Donkey Kong.

"We have eyes and ears in their alliance," explained Lucario. He looked at Pit and Metaknight. "You can choose to join them if you wish. I would advise against it, but then I want to win the game. However, for now, go along with their plans, and when you get the opportunity then tell us as well."

Pit shrugged to Metaknight. "You heard Lucario. We can join the Link alliance if we want. He gave us permission."

Metaknight didn't share his expectant grin. "You can trust us," he said. "We will tell you what he discusses with us."

"But… why are we doing this?" asked Donkey Kong. "If you two aren't actually with them, why are you tricking them?"

"So that we know what our enemy is planning," answered Lucario. "We may be friendly with them, but in the end they are against us, and they must be eliminated."

"You'll get used to the ruthlessness," added Fox, nudging Donkey Kong's side. "Just don't tell anyone what the five of us are planning, and everything will be fine."

"Oh, is that all?" Donkey Kong sighed. "Lie to their faces?"

"It is a game of deception, after all," said Pit. He gave Metaknight a knowing wink.

Reward Challenge

The four tribes met in the clearing in the center of the island. The chalk circle had disappeared and had been replaced with an archery range. Ten targets were lined up in a row facing the tribes. Some were motionless, two were moving vertically, two horizontally, and one in a large circle. All of them were suspended in midair hovering through some unknown force. Twelve Cracker Launchers were resting in the grass several yards away.

Master Hand was already waiting for the tribes to arrive. The players noticed the eliminated player much quicker today, and Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi were especially distraught at the decision. Once all the tribes had assembled, their host began: "Hello, Survivors. Before I explain the challenge, I will say that Peach was eliminated in last night's Tribal Council.

"Now then, today's challenge will be different from the ones you faced earlier. You will select three members to compete in this target practice. Each of these three will attempt to hit the targets with your Cracker Launchers. I'm sure you all have a lot of experience with them, so I don't have to explain how difficult it is to aim with them. Hence why you are all relatively close to your targets.

"Each Cracker Launcher has fifteen shots, so you still miss five shots and maintain a perfect score. However, don't expect this leeway to mean that the challenge will be simple. The targets are deceptively difficult to hit.

"The good news is that all four tribes will be receiving a reward. The more targets your tribe collectively hits, the better your reward. This is your incentive for doing exceptionally well. Now then, choose your participants. You have five minutes."

After several minutes of deliberation, the North Tribe had decided on Samus, Captain Falcon, and Falco; the South Tribe had decided on Link, Toon Link, and Lucario; the East Tribe had decided on Mewtwo, Wolf, and Mario; and the West Tribe had decided on Snake, Bowser, and Luigi. These twelve competitors stepped behind the Cracker Launchers.

Master Hand looked at the choices. "Samus, you will be the first. Good luck."

Samus nodded and picked up her cracker launcher. The large weapon was half the size of her and twice the weight, and even she with her exceptional strength struggled to hold it steady. She looked at the motionless target in front of her, made some quick calculations, and pressed a button on the side of the launcher. A blast of fire burst from the nozzle, held in midair, and then fell into the target, smashing it into sparkling pieces. Confident, she lined up her second shot and fired, successfully hitting that one as well. She continued, hitting every motionless target perfectly. On the first moving target, she missed her first three shots. After managing to hit the target on the next try, she forced herself to calm down, knowing that she only had six shots left. She successfully hit her next two targets, but missed another shot on the ninth. She fired again and missed again. Grumbling, she fired her remaining two shots at the target and managed to hit it on the second try.

"Nine points," Master Hand announced as the targets rematerialized. Samus felt pride and shame, staring at that final target that she couldn't even attempt, and stepped back with her tribe.

Captain Falcon didn't have the patience to line up each shot. He was confident in his previous experience handling the weapons. He only took a few moments to aim in the general area, and the he fired at each target until he hit. He adjusted slightly and continued. In the end, he hit six targets.

Falco took the same approach as Samus. He lined up his shots and fired each one with deadly accuracy. To him, the Cracker Launcher was just a slightly heavier gun; it was natural for him. He reached the moving targets without missing a single shot, and continued hitting them. The motion only slightly slowed his aim, and in the end he hit all ten targets without missing.

Link was next, but he had more trouble than Captain Falcon. Like him, he fired shots randomly and hoped they'd hit. His aim, however, was far worse than Falcon's. His shots continued to horribly miss and, in the end, he was only able to hit three targets.

Toon Link did worse than Link. He could aim slightly better, but the cracker launcher was as tall as him and he couldn't lift it. He hit two targets in the end. Both were disappointed as they rejoined their tribe.

Lucario could lift the cracker launcher and could aim perfectly. As a result, he did as well as Falco, hitting all ten targets without missing a shot.

Mewtwo, predictably, hit all ten targets as well. He fired all ten shots in seven seconds and never missed once. He looked bored as he dropped the cracker launcher and floated over to his tribe. Nobody was surprised at the result, and the attention of most players had switched to the next competitor before he had even finished.

Wolf hit seven targets. He hit the motionless targets beautifully, but he wasted most of his shots on the vertical targets. He was so furious with his final shot that he overshot the horizontal target completely. The shot soared to the edge of the clearing and singed a tree. After the shot landed, he threw the Cracker Launcher to the ground and stormed off in anger.

Mario had little practice with projectiles and was only sent up because ROB couldn't protest. Surprisingly, he did fairly well. He hit the five targets motionless targets, but he could not hit the vertical target at all. Unlike Wolf, however, he accepted his result and was satisfied.

Snake also hit all ten targets, predictably. Like Mewtwo, he barely reacted once the final target exploded. He simply set his Cracker Launcher on the ground and walked over to his congratulatory tribe.

Bowser was the only player to lift their cracker launcher with ease. His aim, however, was horrible. He managed to hit five targets, but most of the ones he missed went as far as Wolf's final shot had. In frustration, he threw his Cracker Launcher down. It hit at an odd angle, and somehow a sixteenth shot popped out and hit him directly in the stomach. Unharmed but furious, he snarled at anyone who dared to show as much as a smile as he rejoined his tribe.

Luigi was the final player to attempt to hit the targets. He was nervous and shaking, struggling to lift the weapon.

Samus, remembering the West Tribe's kindness, wanted to return the favor. "Calm down, Luigi," she advised. Luigi turned to her with a mixture of confusion and surprise. Samus continued: "Aim your shots carefully. Don't worry about missing. Just concentrate on the target."

Luigi gave her a slow nod. He turned his attention back to the targets, breathed slowly, and aimed at the first target. His first shot hit the target perfectly, and his confidence soared. With newfound strength and reassurance, he managed to do better than most, hitting seven of the targets. He thanked Samus as he returned to his tribe.

Once all the shots had been fired, Master Hand floated in front of them and gave the results.

"The North Tribe hit 25 targets; the South Tribe hit 15 targets; the East Tribe hit 22 targets; the West Tribe hit 24 targets. Now then, the prizes! The South Tribe will be receiving a barrel full of fruit and a basket full of kitchenware – that means plates, bowls, and utensils as well as a second cooking pot!

"The East Tribe will be receiving three barrels of fruit, the basket of kitchenware, fishing gear, as well as a sofa and, most important, a bed!

"And then the North and West Tribes will both receive this excellent prize: Four barrels of fruit, the basket of kitchenware, fishing gear, several pots and pans for cooking, two sofas, two softs beds, and a barrel full of meat ready to cook!"

Each tribe cheered as they heard their rewards. The South Tribe grew increasingly jealous as they heard the nicer prizes the other tribes were receiving, and Link and Toon Link felt especially bad for doing so poorly. They felt glares on the backs of their necks.

"You can expect these rewards to be at your tribes by the time you arrive," Master Hand continued. "How you decide sleeping arrangements is, of course, completely up to you. Congratulations, tribes, and I'm eager to see you compete tomorrow!"

With that, the four tribes left the clearing and headed toward their respective camps.

East Tribe

Along the way to camp, some of the more caring members noticed Mario was lagging behind. He was staring at the trail, barely paying attention to where he was going. He nearly hit a tree and barely reacted. Lucas was the first to notice and he stopped to let Mario catch up.

"Oh," Mario said, his voice dripping with sadness. "Hi Lucas…"

"Mario," Lucas whispered, worried. "Are you okay? You look awful."

"I'm fine," Mario lied, trying to fake a smile. "Really… I am."

"It's okay to feel sad," Lucas said. "You can always talk to us." He smiled reassuringly, but Mario looked up at the rest of his tribe. Lucas immediately knew what that look meant. "Maybe… maybe not in front of Wolf and Ganondorf, but you can still cry to me. I know what that's like."

Mario sniffed and wiped away a tear, smiling guiltily despite himself. "Lucas, you're so kind… thank you. I feel so bad. You've lived such a tragic life, and here I am… crying in front of you."

Lucas gave him a small hug. "Don't say that. I… I know how much Peach means to you. Her being gone… you should cry."

"But not in front of you."

"I'll cry with you," Lucas offered.

Mario chuckled. "That wouldn't make things better."

Pokémon Trainer had noticed as well, and he walked up to them. "Are you two okay? If you walk any slower, you're going to miss the drawing for the beds."

"I don't mind the hammocks," said Mario, but Lucas wasn't going to avoid the issue.

"Peach was eliminated," Lucas reminded him.

"Oh," Pokémon Trainer managed to say, understanding the significance. He looked carefully at Mario. "Do you need to talk?"

"Thank you, but I don't. I think I just need time."

"Sure," Pokémon Trainer nodded, unconvinced. "Just know we're here for you."

Pokémon Trainer and Lucas decided to stay beside Mario as they walked. They tried to distract him with hopes about the prizes they were going to receive, but despite the many fake smiles and laughs, Mario couldn't ignore the loss. He had hoped that Peach would have made friends and allies and could have made it to the point where they joined the same tribe. But that would never happen; Peach was gone.

The tribe arrived at camp to see their rewards had been delivered. The sofa was larger than they had expected, sitting facing the beach and looking large enough for any of them to sleep comfortably. The bed, meanwhile, was a King, dressed in plain sheets but certainly more comfortable than the hammock.

"Dibs!" Wolf declared as he jumped onto the bed.

"That's a two person," Ganondorf sneered. "You want to sleep with someone, then be my guest."

"If someone wants to sleep with me, then they'll have to fight me to the death."

"I'll be your big spoon," King Dedede said, chuckling. Wolf snarled at him.

"We should draw straws," Ike decided. "It is the fairest way to decide."

"I could think of hundreds of better ways," said Wolf.

"Given our resources, it is enough," replied Ike.

"Mewtwo can make straws fair," Diddy Kong reminded them. He turned to the person in question. "Right?"

Mewtwo gave him a careful look, and then slowly nodded. Diddy Kong clapped and grinned. "There we go! We have our solution!"

"I don't agree with that!" Wolf moaned. "We should put it to a vote!"

"Mario should decide," Lucas offered. "He's the leader."

"You should keep your mouth shut," Wolf countered.

Lucas backed away, and Mario placed a hand on his shoulder to reassure him. He looked at Wolf defiantly. "Lucas is right, and I choose to draw straws, because Ike is right."

"I'm with Mario," Pokémon Trainer agreed.

"As do I," added Diddy Kong.

"I'll draw straws," said Ganondorf, smirking at Wolf.

"ROB and I do not need either the bed or the couch," Mewtwo declared. "So, Wolf, you have even greater chance at getting one of them."

"Don't think I trust you," said Wolf.

Nevertheless, Mewtwo crafted eight straws from nearby tree branches. Two were made shorter than the others, one engraved with 'bed', and one engraved with 'couch'. He placed them in his hand, moved them around, and held his hands out. Their true lengths were hidden to the outside.

"Choose one," said Mewtwo. "Wolf, would you like to go first?"

Wolf didn't like the tone. He got out of bed and snatched a straw from Mewtwo's hands. It turned out to be too long, and he threw it to the ground and stormed off.

"Make sure he doesn't damage any of them," warned Ike, watching Wolf carefully.

Mewtwo nodded, also keeping a close eye on their tribe member. The rest of the participants chose their sticks. Lucas got the 'bed'-engraved straw, and he cheered happily. King Dedede grabbed the 'couch'-engraved straw.

"Luck of the Dedede," King Dedede chuckled as he flopped onto the couch, which creaked under his weight.

"Careful," Ganondorf warned. "One of us is going to take that over when you're eliminated."

"That right?" King Dedede asked, closing his eyes as he relaxed. "Better ruin it before I leave, then."

North Tribe

As the tribe arrived at camp, a sudden realization came to Falco's head as he went over the results.

"We won," he announced out of nowhere, causing the others to turn to him for clarification. "We got the most points."

"We did," Sonic confirmed, nodding, still confused. "Did you only just realize that?"

"Do you know how many challenges we've actually won?" Falco asked. "We won the first with the most points, we won the last Immunity Challenge thanks to you, Sonic, and we won this challenge. We're three for four on victories!"

"We're the best," Captain Falcon grinned. "No one can stop us!"

"We have a great team," Samus agreed.

"And a great leader," Captain Falcon added, winking at his Tribe Leader. Said Tribe Leader smiled appreciatively back at him, but her gaze turned almost immediately to Roy.

"I'm going to love sleeping in that bed," Zelda said, stretching. "The hammocks were fine, but they're nothing compared to a soft bed."

"That I can agree with," Yoshi nodded, remembering his own bed back home. "How are we going to decide who gets which?"

"We could fight for it," Wario offered. "Tournament style."

"We can't fight," Olimar reminded him. "Not outside challenges."

"Bah," Wario scoffed. "We could make it our own challenge."

"I'm afraid it doesn't work like that," said Olimar.

"Does anyone want to opt out?" asked Sonic.

Nobody volunteered. All of them wanted the more comfortable sleeping arrangements. As they walked into camp, they saw the beds had been placed on opposite ends of the beach, and the couches were much closer to the shore. The barrels of food had joined their other barrels, and the basket had been placed by their still-burning fire.

"Oh wow!" Zelda gasped. "The bed looks softer than I had imagined!"

"They clearly spare no expense," Sonic said, running his hand along the top of the nearest bed. "It's probably comfortable no matter how you're shaped."

"Think it could handle Bowser?" Falco asked, snickering.

"It's a bed," Roy replied. "It isn't immortal."

Samus laughed hard at that joke. Roy smiled embarrassingly, not realizing he was that much of a comedian. Once Samus recovered, wiping a tear from her eye, she walked over to a tuft of grass and ripped out a bunch of blades. She carefully measured them in her hands, called Roy over to confirm their sizes, and returned to the others with grass in hand.

"Six of them are around the same height," she explained, holding them all in her hand at even heights. "Two are really short, two are really long. The short ones get the couch, the long ones get the bed."

"We're really drawing straws?" Wario moaned. "That's so boring! It isn't fair!"

"Save the moaning for when you lose," Zelda said, taking a blade and looking at it carefully. "I need someone to compare."

"That's a loser," said Roy apologetically.

One by one, the others took their blades. By the end, Roy and Samus were left with the two longest blades, while Yoshi and Jigglypuff received the shortest. Naturally, some members were annoyed at the results.

"Really?" Wario pointed at the two bed-winners. "Of course you two won! Why would I even be surprised?"

"If you really think we cheated, you're delusional," said Samus, shaking her head. "I didn't move the blades at all."

"I don't get why Jigglypuff needs the whole couch to herself," argued Captain Falcon. In response, Jigglypuff puffed out and glared at him. He barely reacted. "You're like half an inch taller."

"Jiggly!" Jigglypuff argued.

"She won," said Yoshi. "There's nothing you can do about it."

"We could overpower her," offered Wario.

Zelda stepped in between them and Jigglypuff, her hands glowing a black aura. "Don't suggest anything like that again. If you think of harming her, you'll have to face me."

"I'm terrified," Falco replied sarcastically. He shrugged. "Fair's fair. We lost. Just wait until some of you guys go."

Roy and Samus whispered to one another, and when they came apart Roy held his blade in the air. "I'd like to relinquish my prize to whomever wants it."

"Mine!" Wario shouted, running forward. Before he could touch Roy, Sonic sprinted in front of him and snatched it from Roy's outstretched hand.

"Really?" Sonic asked, as Wario slid to a stop and scowled. "I mean, I'll give you points for trying, but you think you could beat me in any race?"

Olimar chuckled. "Sorry, Wario, maybe next time."

Wario grumbled to himself and stormed off. Zelda tilted her head curiously. "Why did you do that?" she asked.

"Samus and I have decided to share the bed," Roy replied, smiling despite himself.

"Oh," Zelda said, smiling approvingly.

"Wait, Samus, you could share the bed with me," Captain Falcon offered, coming forward.

Samus slowly shook her head, keeping a steady smile. "I'm sorry Captain Falcon. I appreciate the offer, but my offer is only for Roy."

Captain Falcon blinked, and then he turned to Roy and stared him up and down. Without another word, he walked away, leaving the entire tribe in an awkward silence.

West Tribe

The tribe arrived to see their brand new furniture waiting for them. Pikachu immediately leapt onto the bed in his excitement, bouncing on it, flipping in the air. Kirby joined him, and the pair held hands as they enjoyed the reward.

"Don't hog it all to yourself," Marth advised. "We have yet to decide who will sleep on the furniture tonight."

"We could take turns," Luigi suggested. "Alternate?"

"That's a good idea," said Kirby. "I call first night! And second night!"

"And that is why that won't work," said Ness. "Sorry, Luigi. I like the idea too, but it seems cruel to kick people off beds after they've already enjoyed them."

"Well, we're enjoying it right now," Kirby argued. "So you can't make us leave!"

"Oh just get off it!" said Young Link frustratingly. "This is an important decision we're making."

Kirby stopped bouncing, staring at Young Link curiously. "Are you okay?"

Young Link was staring at the bed more than he was at Kirby. "I'm fine. I just want to sleep on something solid for once."

"You could sleep on Bowser's shell," Ness suggested. "Or a tree trunk."

"Sure," Bowser snorted, grinning. "Curl up right next to me tonight. I won't bite."

Young Link took an instinctive step away from Bowser. "Snake, what do we do?"

Snake had been walking around camp drawing in the sand. He had circled the camp, finishing next to the group. He pointed at the ground.

"We will start here," he declared. "The first two to finish three complete laps inside the line will win the beds, and the second pair will win the couches. The positions are permanent until the winner is eliminated."

"A race?" Kirby asked, frowning. He looked at Pikachu, whose eyes were gleaming in excitement. "I'm not going to win a race!"

"Executive decision!" Young Link declared, standing beside Snake ready to race. "Let's get this going!"

Snake stepped into the center of the circle. "I will decide if anyone is cheating. I'll abstain from the race."

The others lined up at the line. Snake shouted at the others to begin, and the others raced. Snake immediately disqualified Bowser for knocking Luigi outside the race, and almost immediately afterward disqualified Popo for going outside the lines. Popo of course argued the decision, but Snake was obstinate.

A disgruntled Popo and furious Bowser sat on the sidelines and watched the others race. Popo nudged Bowser to get his attention.

"Hey, so Young Link couldn't get Luigi and Snake to join us."

"Shocker," Bowser muttered.

"But we got Pikachu and Ness instead," Popo said excitedly. "Ness actually volunteered! I'm glad he saw the light!"

"That right?" Bowser snorted, eyeing Ness carefully.

"Yeah! So we're going to throw the challenge tomorrow and eliminate Luigi for ignoring us," Popo announced. "And then we'll work on the others. We're just going to meet tomorrow to finalize everything."

Bowser was okay with that. He nodded. The race ended with Pikachu the clear victor. Marth finished in second, claiming the other bed. Young Link and Luigi received the beds, and Ness and Kirby were left depressed. That is until Pikachu ran over to the pair and spoke with them quietly. They couldn't understand him, but they got the idea: the three of them could all sleep in the bed together.

"You're the best," Kirby said, hugging Pikachu tightly.

"Thank you so much," Ness added, joining the hug.

With everything decided and everyone exhausted, the tribe didn't speak much after the race and went to bed.

South Tribe

Having won no furniture in the challenge and coming back to just a barrel of food and a basket, the tribe had no reason to spend time deliberating sleeping arrangements. Instead, Link and Toon Link gathered Pichu, Mr. Game and Watch, Pit, and Metaknight and led them into the bushes.

"Everyone knows the situation," Toon Link explained. "We've told all of you. This is the alliance that will get us to the end of the game."

Metaknight looked around at the six of them. His eyes fell on Mr. Game and Watch, who made no indication of understanding, and Pichu, who was watching Metaknight closely. Metaknight wasn't impressed.

"I'd like to meet tomorrow before the challenge," Link said. "After breakfast, we'll find time. I'd just like everyone to think about someone they'd like to target if we lose tomorrow as well."

"If anyone has any volunteers, come forward," Toon Link suggested.

Nobody said a word. Pit was smiling encouragingly to the young swordsman, while Metaknight merely stared. Toon Link grumbled, realizing he'd have to be the one to make the choice.

"Alright," Toon Link said, stepping forward. "I'll suggest Donkey Kong."

That even surprised Link, who turned to his companion in confusion. "Really? Him already?"

"I thought he was our friend, but he voted for Peach," Toon Link replied. "How could I trust him?"

"We'll need his strength," argued Pit.

"But our other choices are Fox and Lucario," said Toon Link. "And both of them are incredibly strong as well. Donkey Kong is just the lesser of the evils."

"I'd suggest Lucario," said Metaknight. "He's proven himself to be an intellectual as well as physical threat."

"How's he been intellectual?" asked Link.

"He calculated those shots during the Reward Challenge," Metaknight replied. "He agreed to a stalemate rather than a defeat, allowing us to win the first Immunity Challenge."

"Plus, he's always been really smart," Pit added. "He's a threat."

"Now we have a debate," Link clapped his hands. "We'll decide tomorrow."

"Well, who's your vote?" asked Pit.

"Honestly, Lucario," Link answered. "For all of those reasons you described. I'm just glad you voiced them. Sleep on the decision. It'll be nice to have for tomorrow."

Pit and Metaknight exited the clearing, and Mr. Game and Watch soon followed them. Pichu had a strange feeling about the pair, and he followed them a fair distance away, scampering as quietly as he could. He followed them through the camp and into the jungle on the opposite end of the beach. He soon found them in another small clearing with the remaining members of camp, keeping quiet as he eavesdropped.

Pit and Metaknight quickly explained the situation on the other alliance. Fox snickered when he heard their opinions.

"Glad I'm not a target," Fox said once they had finished. "I'm under the radar."

Donkey Kong stared at his feet. "I don't like being targeted. It feels awful."

"It means you're a threat," said Pit. "That can be good if you take advantage of it."

"But how?" Donkey Kong asked. "I don't know how!"

"Use your strength to your advantage," Pit suggested. "Remind them how useful you are in challenges, and you'll be safe!"

"But they'll never trust me again," Donkey Kong wailed. "I lost their friendship!"

"It's the choice you have to live with," Metaknight reminded him.

"Thank you for the information," said Lucario. "We should make our own decision on whom to vote, as well."

"Mr. Game and Watch," answered Fox immediately. "I'm sorry, Lucario, but he hasn't been useful in the slightest."

Pit nodded. "Pichu's done well in the climbing challenges. We shouldn't vote him yet."

"Pichu's too innocent," added Donkey Kong. "He doesn't deserve to go."

Lucario nodded, pleased with the decision. "If there is no argument, we will adjourn the meeting. Sleep well."

Pichu had disappeared before Lucario had finished. Even if he barely understood the basics of Survivor, he knew that he was in a trusting group, and that group's trust was broken. He needed to tell Link as soon as he woke up. He had to know there were traitors amongst him.

Day 5

East Tribe

Mewtwo woke up to find King Dedede had rolled off the relatively thin couch and had fallen onto the beach. He decided now was the perfect time to discuss a plan. His eyes glowed bright blue as he lifted King Dedede from his new sleeping spot and into the jungle. It didn't take long for King Dedede to realize something was wrong, and he woke up in a panic.

"Ahh!" King Dedede yelped in shock, having woken up to see the dark ground beneath him and nothing physically keeping him in the air. He struggled in the air before his eyes found the glowing blue eyes. He immediately calmed down. "You can't do that to me! You'll give me a heart attack!"

"Oh," Mewtwo replied calmly. "Are you implying you're getting old?"

King Dedede scoffed. "Since when did you get a sense of humor?"

"I could drop you in the ocean, if that would answer your question."

King Dedede didn't hesitate. "I'll pass. This was a rude enough awakening."

They reached a small clearing, and Mewtwo set him down. King Dedede brushed the sand off his robe before crossing his arms and waiting for his ally to speak.

"There is something happening soon," Mewtwo said. "Within a few days."

"That right? A coup?"

"Of sorts," Mewtwo replied. His eyes glowed blue once more, and King Dedede's wanting expression soon turned into one of understanding. He slowly began to nod, and soon Mewtwo's eyes turned to normal.

"Oh," King Dedede muttered. "That's… big."

"It could go wrong," Mewtwo warned. "But you understand our position now is precarious at best."

"You think we'll lose?" King Dedede asked.

"I hope not," Mewtwo admitted. "Even if we do, I still want to do this plan."

"Why? If we win, we'll be set for a long time!"

"Consider what I told you," Mewtwo advised. "Our positions are not secure. Not yet. We will do this."

"But the others will hate us!" King Dedede argued.

"You will be safe. I assure you of that. I will be in far more danger, but I will be able to handle myself."

"You sound like a martyr," King Dedede muttered.

Mewtwo smirked, appreciating the thought. "Perhaps. But it is my decision. Give me your word that you agree to the plan. It will be better for both of us in the long run."

King Dedede sighed loudly. He thought in silence for several minutes. Finally, he looked up at Mewtwo and gave a single nod.

As usual, Mewtwo made breakfast for the entire tribe, which they all enjoyed on their new shiny silverware. Afterward, the tribes split into their alliances. What was most noticeable was that ROB went with the evil alliance, confirming their relationship.

They stopped in their usual clearing. ROB looked nervously at each of them, as none of them seemed happy to be doing this. King Dedede noticed this, and he gave him a reassuring smile.

"You okay, ROB?" He asked.

ROB nodded.

"That's just peachy," King Dedede turned to Wolf. "How about you? How was your hammock?"

"Quiet," Wolf growled. "We have our numbers. Now we need the target."

"I don't have a preference," King Dedede said.

"Mario," said Ganondorf. "Take down the leader, and we'll have our power."

"We don't have the numbers," Mewtwo advised, and Ganondorf turned to him defiantly. "It is even, so there will be a tie breaker at Tribal Council. If you believe you can defeat Mario in every possible challenge that could be thrown at us, then continue with your vote."

"Of course I can," Ganondorf replied.

"You're stronger than him," Wolf reminded him. "You're terrible at speed, at climbing. You can't make a fire, you can't swim, and you're only okay at puzzles."

Ganondorf glared at him. "I'm stronger than him. That'll be enough."

Wolf shook his head. "No, Mewtwo's right. I don't want to try to face Mario so early. Not when there are far weaker people in his group."

"Are you scared of little Mario?"

"I… I saw the damage…" Wolf admitted. There was a hint of fear in his eyes. "Not yet. It's too early. Mario is for later."

"Then whom?"

"Lucas," answered Wolf. "Or Pokémon Trainer. I don't care which. Neither of them deserve to be here."

"Lucas then," Ganondorf nodded. He looked at the others. "Everyone else agree?"

King Dedede and Mewtwo shrugged indifferently, but ROB was staring at him with wide eyes. Ganondorf turned on the robot, glaring suspiciously.

"Hey, ROB, you're part of the alliance. You vote who we tell you to vote."

ROB shook his head. He wanted to argue, to tell them he couldn't vote for Lucas of all people. But he couldn't. He could only watch as Ganondorf grew more suspicious.

"That was the agreement," Ganondorf reminded him.

"ROB, please," King Dedede pleaded. "It's best for us."

ROB still didn't nod in agreement. His expression seemed to soften as he looked at King Dedede, but he rolled into the jungle without answering the question. As he disappeared from sight, Ganondorf rounded on Wolf.

"Your plan's not working."

"Then we'd better win," Wolf replied, looking amused at his rage.

The other alliance was sitting on the bed deciding their own strategy. Lucas was shaking in fear.

"We have to win this challenge," said Ike. "We cannot afford to risk a tiebreaker. We have to speak with ROB and hope that we can convince him to join our side."

"At the very least," Diddy Kong said quietly, looking at the ground. He knew there was no chance they would convince him before the challenge. "We should decide on someone. Just in case we lose."

"We won't lose," Pokémon Trainer said, trying to remain optimistic. "We have Mewtwo. We have Mario."

"We have Diddy Kong," Diddy Kong added. The two grinned at each other.

"Who do we dislike the most?" asked Ike. "Wolf or Ganondorf?"

"I'm more scared of Ganondorf," Pokémon Trainer admitted. "Wolf's ferocious, but he's weaker."

"Not by much," added Diddy Kong.

"That could make the difference," said Mario. "Mewtwo is really useful, and King Dedede can still be saved from them."

"And ROB doesn't know what he's doing," said Lucas.

"ROB can also be saved," Mario continued. "Ganondorf is definitely stronger than Wolf, and in a tiebreaker he'll be a tougher opponent."

"So we're voting for Wolf?" Pokémon Trainer asked. "Because he's weaker?"

"They'll do the same," said Ike. Pokémon Trainer looked at him in confusion. "They'll target our weakest member.

"But they're obsessed with strength," said Diddy Kong. "They'd want to target our strongest first."

"Perhaps," Ike admitted. "They certainly flaunt their power more. However, I believe it is simply to establish fear in us. They want to win, and they have Mewtwo who is no doubt looking at the situation logically. They'll target our weakest."

"Which is me," Pokémon Trainer said sadly.

"Or me," Lucas added quietly.

"Or me," said Diddy Kong. "It doesn't matter. We just have to beat them once, and we'll win."

"It's that simple," said Mario, smiling sadly, wishing it was that simple. "Just once…"

South Tribe

Breakfast was eaten quickly, as everyone was eager to split into their alliances and divulge their choices. Before Link could get up, Pichu grabbed him and ushered him away.

"What's wrong, Pichu?" Link asked.

"Pichu, Pi, Pichu, Pi, Pi, Pichu!" Pichu shouted exasperatingly, trying to explain Pit and Metaknight's betrayal. Link could only stare at him blankly.

"I'm sorry, Pichu," Link apologized sympathetically. "I'm sure it's important, but I can't understand you."

"Pichu…" Pichu grumbled, kicking the ground in frustration. Then a lightbulb went off. He grabbed a stick and drew a caricature of Metaknight.

"Oh, I see! Metaknight!" Link said, happily. Pichu nodded and drew a quick sketch of Pit's head. "And Pit. Anyone else?"

And that was when Link fully understood, when Pichu drew Lucario's face and then followed with Fox and Donkey Kong's faces. Link stared at the five drawings, hoping that he was misunderstanding.

"They're… together?" Link guessed, and his worst fears were realized when Pichu nodded his head as quickly as he could. "As in… an alliance? Like us?" More nods. "They're really…"

"Pichu, Pi!" Pichu confirmed, ecstatic that Link could understand.

"What about the others?" Link asked. Pichu shrugged, and Link let out a small sigh of relief. "So just those two." He counted the faces. Five against four. If Pit and Metaknight truly weren't on his side, his whole alliance was a sham, and he was falling into a trap.

"I'll tell the others," Link said. He patted Pichu's head. As upset as he was, he was proud that Pichu had the bravery to tell him. "Thank you so much. You prevented us from looking like fools."

"Pi!" Pichu said happily, leaning into the pets.

Link left the clearing to tell the others, while Pichu started covering his drawings so that the others couldn't hear. However, he heard footsteps behind him and yelped as he turned around, seeing Lucario standing over him.

"I can understand you, you know," Lucario noted. "I overheard what you told Link."

"I'm sorry!" Pichu cried in his own language. "I didn't know! I just wanted Link to be happy!"

"I know," Lucario said understandingly. "I'm not upset that you told him our plan. I had expected it to be revealed eventually; Donkey Kong has been rather irritating as of late. I will of course tell the others."

"Oh please don't!" Pichu cried. "I don't want to be hated!"

"I will not tell them that you told," Lucario replied. "I will suggest Link found out of his own accord. At least it will make him sound more impressive. Now then… what to do with you?"

Lucario paused dramatically, pretending to be deep in thought as Pichu cowered before him. Finally, Lucario let out a sigh and looked down at him. "I suppose I have no choice but to force you to join our alliance."

"Wh-what?" Pichu gasped.

"I'm sure you overheard us last night praising you. I will use that as leverage to force them to accept you. Of course, I cannot help you once we have eliminated the others, but for now I will give you this reprieve."

"Why?" Pichu asked. "I just… ruined your plan!"

"We should stick together," Lucario answered. "I have been trying to turn the others away from voting for you since the beginning, and I will do what I can to prevent your elimination."

"Thank you!" Pichu cried. He knew that Lucario's alliance was the stronger of the two, and he was happy that he was a part of it. "I won't let you down!"

Lucario smiled. "Of course not."

West Tribe

After breakfast, Young Link and Popo called Ness, Pikachu, and Bowser over in front of everyone else. Ness had reassured his friends that everything would be okay, but even as the trio left the others were still nervous.

"What are they all doing?" Luigi asked, the only one completely oblivious to the strategy. "Why is Ness talking to Popo?"

"It's a long story," Kirby said, staring at his half-eaten food. He looked up at Marth. "Aren't you nervous?"

Marth had cleaned his plate. He shook his head and smiled at Kirby. "We've known Ness for a long time. He has a plan."

"But… but what if that plan… what if Ness actually goes with them?" asked Kirby.

"It won't," Marth assured him. "Ness is no fool. He knows aligning himself with them would be a mistake."

"Why?" Kirby asked. He pointed at them. "They've got five! We're only four! Marth, they outnumber us!"

"It isn't just a game of numbers," said Marth. "It is a game of friendships and alliances. Young Link is a fool, and he is playing a fool's game."

"I really hope so," Kirby muttered. "I don't know what I'd do if Ness betrayed us…"

Meanwhile, the faux alliance of five barely left camp before Young Link stopped.

"I'm glad you all chose the winning side," He said smugly. "The five of us are going to dominate them."

"Absolutely," Ness said, nodding greedily. "We outnumber them. We'll win!"

"Ness, I was wrong about you," Popo said proudly. "I always knew you were smart."

Ness patted Pikachu. "Pikachu's with us as well. He understands."

Pikachu had barely had any emotion. Ness's touch seemed to awaken him, and he put on a bright face and nodded with the same greed that Ness expressed. "Pika, Pi!" He agreed.

"Excellent!" Young Link said, turning to Bowser. "Of course, the alliance is nothing without you."

"Hm?" Bowser said. "Oh, yeah, I'm with you one hundred percent, Young Link."

That was enough for him. "Awesome! So tonight, when we lose, we'll all vote for Luigi!"

"Perfect!" Popo said. "Now if you excuse me, I still have a fish to eat!"

Popo left them and went back to the others. Young Link stared at Popo as he disappeared, and when he was far enough away he turned to the four of them and whispered, "Okay, now that Popo's gone, this is the real plan. We're voting for Popo tonight."

The other three were stunned for the briefest of moments. Ness recovered quickly, contorting his face into impressed curiosity. Pikachu and Bowser were slower to recover, but Young Link's full attention was focused on Ness.

"Oh, brilliant plan!" Ness exclaimed. "Make Popo think he's part of the alliance, and then blindside him when he's the most vulnerable!"

"Exactly!" Young Link practically yelled in excitement. "You get it!"

Bowser was surprised to hear Ness agree to the plan, especially since even he, as clueless as he typically was to strategy, could see so many flaws to it. He couldn't even fake intrigue. The more he thought about it, the dumber the plan was.

Nevertheless, Ness continued with the praise. "Honestly, Young Link, I'm surprised you were able to make this plan so quickly. I mean, I never would've dreamed of something so brilliant!"

Young Link blushed. "Stop, please, it's nothing. It actually didn't take me too long. Only a few days. Once Popo's gone, I'll be sure to plan ways to eliminate the others. We'll never lose."

"Oh yeah," Ness nodded. "I can't wait for those."

Just before the challenge, Ness, Pikachu, Kirby and Marth met up at the beach. Ness looked much happier than usual, having explained the morning's meeting.

"Oh, you should've been there," Ness said, grinning. "You wouldn't have been able to keep a straight face."

Marth was in complete disbelief. "How could he be so foolish? What does he hope to accomplish?"

"How did Bowser react?" asked Kirby.

The memory made Ness giggle. "He couldn't even pretend. He just had this silly look on his face like Young Link was a complete idiot. I'd never be able to mimic it."

"So what is he doing?" asked Kirby. "Is he with us? Is he with Young Link?"

Ness smiled knowingly. "I think Bowser knows what to do."

"It's a good thing he came to you," Marth said. "Otherwise we may have been led astray."

"We'll have to thank him later," Kirby declared. "He might have saved us."

"Of course we will," Ness agreed. "I know exactly what we'll do."

North Tribe

Roy and Samus awoke the next day, their hair disheveled, and got dressed before deciding to make food for the entire tribe. They were in an extremely good mood, talking cutely to each other and giggling as they finished breakfast. They woke everyone else up, shaking them softly.

The entire tribe assembled around the fire and ate their breakfast on their new dinnerware. The awkwardness from the previous night still remained, as Captain Falcon dug into his breakfast ferociously. He refused to make contact with Samus, whose happy mood was slowly dissolving as she watched her friend so angry.

Wanting to poke the hornet's nest, Falco leaned to Yoshi and asked, "How'd you enjoy the couch?"

"It was lovely," Yoshi replied. "The best night's sleep I've had on this island."

"We're making our own home here, really," Falco nodded. "We've got food, fire, and beds. Soon we'll be getting electricity and plumbing."

"If that was the case, it'd hardly be considered surviving," Olimar observed. "It'd just be living with the occasional challenge."

"Isn't that life, though?" asked Roy.

"You're wise beyond your years," said Sonic, smirking.

"How was your rest?" Falco turned to Roy now that he spoke. "I'm sure it was warm, the two of you."

The pair in question smiled guiltily. "It was wonderful," Samus answered. "It's nice to have company."

"We talked for hours," Roy nodded. "I spoke about parts of my life I hadn't thought about in years."

"Must be cathartic," said Olimar.

"I feel like a new man."

"You look like one," Falco smirked. "Like someone who got enough relief in one night to last years."

"I'm energized," said Roy. "I feel like we are going to destroy this challenge."

"That's the confidence I like to hear," Sonic said. "I feel the same way!"

"I feel miserable," Wario muttered. "I slept horrible. I couldn't sleep through Samus' moaning."

That brought the entire conversation to a halt. Then the sound of a plate shattering filled the air. They all looked simultaneously at the culprit, who had gotten to his feet with ferocious eyes hidden behind his mask.

"I don't want to think about it, Wario," Captain Falcon said as calmly as he could muster. "Never say anything like that again."

"What?" Wario asked, feeling no fear. "Are you upset you didn't get lucky? Should've been faster."

"Enough," Samus warned. "Wario, you need to leave. Right now."

Wario rolled his eyes. "I'm not going anywhere."

Samus got to her feet, and Roy quickly followed. "Then we will. We don't need your complaining ruining our good mood. Just because you're miserable does not give you the right to make the rest of us miserable!"

Sonic got to his feet as well, placing a calming hand on Captain Falcon's shoulder. "It's not worth it."

Wario pointed at the broken glass. "You should pick that up before someone gets hurt."

Sonic immediately saw what was going to happen. He grabbed Captain Falcon's upper arm and dragged him out of camp. Captain Falcon struggled to break free, but Sonic didn't let go until they were well outside camp.

"Why'd you do that?" Captain Falcon shouted. He was furious. He wanted to hurt something, anything. But Sonic was here.

"Because I saw that coming a mile away," Sonic replied, keeping a fair distance between them just in case Captain Falcon lashed out. "You'd pick up a shard of glass, and then you'd cut him up."

"I'd never do that!" Captain Falcon lied. He was planning on doing exactly that. "I'm not like that!"

"Usually you aren't," Sonic agreed. "But Wario was irritating all of us, like he usually does. I wanted to punch the awfulness out of him, and he wasn't talking to me at all."

Captain Falcon replied by screaming in rage and punching a nearby tree. The tree burst into flame and then just as suddenly was snuffed out. He was breathing heavily, but that one act calmed him down significantly.

"The good news is that everyone's on our side," Sonic offered. "We all want him gone."

"We should throw the challenge," Captain Falcon muttered. "Just to vote him off."

"I don't think Falco would like that."

"I don't care what Falco likes."

"Hear hear," Sonic said mockingly, smirking smugly.

Immunity Challenge

Once more they met in the center of the island. The chalk circle had returned, this time much larger than the previous challenges; it encompassed nearly the entirety of the giant clearing. Master Hand floated high over the center waiting for the tribe to gather.

"First, the North and East Tribes please send one person – not Zelda or Ganondorf – to sit out in the challenge," Master Hand announced. After a quick discussion, Jigglypuff and Pokémon Trainer were chosen. "Today's challenge is somewhat of a survival challenge. When the challenge begins, all survivors will enter the arena and attempt to knock out everyone from the other tribes.

"There are two ways to be eliminated. The first is to simply be knocked out of the chalk circle. The second is a surprise that will become obvious once the person is eliminated in this fashion. The first tribe to have all of their members eliminated will go to Tribal Council.

"Now everyone be very careful entering the circle and stay along the outside edges. When you are ready, I will continue." Mater Hand waited until they were ready, and then he continued. "Begin the challenge!"

With Master Hand's warning in mind, the thirty-six players of the challenge charged to the center of the circle, where they believed they'd be safest. Within three seconds, several cages sprang out of the ground and captured those unfortunate enough to set them off. Once the initial wave of captures had passed, the survivors stopped in their tracks. The cages floated in midair propelled by a mysterious force, showing the captured for all to witness.

"And Sonic, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Bowser, Ike, King Dedede, ROB, Pikachu, and Toon Link have been eliminated the alternate way: Getting captured in one of the thirty five cages hidden in the ground." Master Hand announced. "Try being careful from now on."

"Shut up, this cage is uncomfortable," Bowser roared, much too large for the cage he was trapped in.

"Everyone," Samus advised. "Either don't move or move very carefully."

Lucas, Pichu, and Mr. Game and Watch were too terrified to move while many of the others cautiously crept towards one another. Shortly after Samus's warning, Young Link was caught in one of the hidden cages.

Mewtwo and Metaknight, being able to glide along the ground, quickly deduced that they were in no danger of getting caught. As a result, they went around the arena knocking away Pichu, Mr. Game and Watch, Lucas, and Ness. Metaknight went after Diddy Kong next, but to his surprise the agile monkey fought back. Diddy Kong jumped into the air and wrapped his arms tightly around Metaknight's head, blinding him. Metaknight glided into Link, knocking him over and sending him into a hidden cage, and bounced back onto the ground. Diddy Kong was thrown off of him just as a trap was sprung. Diddy Kong landed on safe ground while Metaknight was captured.

"Now then," Mewtwo chuckled, the only one able to move safely. He turned from tribe to tribe, studying them carefully. "Which tribe should I eliminate?"

"Be careful, Mewtwo," Mario warned. "Samus, Snake, and Pit can still attack you!"

Snake had fired a missile at Mewtwo, but at Mario's warning, Mewtwo floated several feet to the left. The missile narrowly missed him, disappearing over the tree line and exploding over the island.

"Twenty players are left, and all four tribes have members still in," announced Master Hand.

Nobody was moving now. They were all staring at Mewtwo, completely at his mercy as he stared at each person in turn. Something caught his attention as Popo suddenly fell into Kirby and pushed him into a nearby trap. As Kirby's cage shot into the air, Popo scrambled to his feet only to find his own trap. That made Mewtwo's decision for him, and shot his arm forward. A blast of psychic energy shot from his fingers and sent Luigi flying backward outside the circle.

Everyone else watched, with most relieved that they weren't being targeted. Marth and Snake were the last ones remaining of the West Tribe. Marth attempted to block a second blast with his Falchion, but even his divine sword was little match for the pure power of Mewtwo. He was sent flying out of the circle, joining Luigi. Snake and Mewtwo faced each other, both knowing what would result. Mewtwo flew towards him at rapid speeds. Snake braced himself as Mewtwo rammed into him, grabbed him by the shoulders, and carried him out of the circle, eliminating them both.

"And the West Tribe has lost immunity for the second time," Master Hand announced. "The North, South, and East Tribes have won immunity!"

Those on the winning tribes cheered. Some protested and others flat out screamed to be released from their prisons. Master Hand sighed and snapped himself, and the traps disappeared. Those captured fell to the ground, many painfully landing on those who hadn't been captured. Once everyone had gotten to their feet, the winning tribes took an Immunity Idol and left for their respective camps. The losing tribe reluctantly followed Master Hand to Tribal Council.

Tribal Council

Carrying lit torches, the West Tribe walked into camp and sat in two rows, separated from Master Hand by the crackling flames of the conflagration. Young Link occasionally glanced at each member of his new alliance. Despite supposedly being in a strong alliance, Popo still couldn't hide his nerves. Luigi, always nervous, was literally shaking as he sat down. Snake, meanwhile, seemed calm as usual. The remaining members shared knowing looks.

"So, Bowser, how does it feel to lose a second time?" Master Hand asked.

"It's not like it was our fault," Bowser grumbled. "Mewtwo singled us out! We lost because of him!"

"He is really powerful," Master Hand conceded. "But do you suppose there's a reason he chose your tribe?"

"He thinks we're weak," Bowser answered bitterly. "He's wrong."

"He is," Snake agreed. "He's made enemies of us all. He will not succeed in eliminating us all."

"I hope not," Master Hand replied. "We will keep a close eye on Mewtwo. He will not single your tribe for much longer. How has morale been for your tribe otherwise, Kirby?"

"Well, it's had its ups and downs," said Kirby uncertainly. "I really like this tribe, but I know others who don't. We've lost a lot of challenges, and that's really disappointing, but I think for the most part we get along."

"Why do you believe others don't get along?" asked Master Hand.

"Well, Popo doesn't like us much. We did eliminate Nana…"

"And I promise you," Popo said, fighting his nerves. "You will pay for that."

"Popo, please don't make your situation worse," said Ness, staring directly into Popo's eyes. "I promise you, you will be okay if you do not speak."

Popo opened his mouth to argue, but his nerves got the better of him, and he stared at the fire silently. Master Hand was curious, however. "Why do you say that, Ness?"

"There are going to be a lot of revelations tonight, Master Hand," Ness replied. "Some of us will not like the results; others will love them. That can all change, however, if someone says the wrong thing."

"You say that like you have a plan," Master Hand noted. "I am assuming you're confident in it, the way you're speaking."

"Obviously," Ness replied, slyly smiling. "I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't have a plan."

Luigi gulped, his eyes widening. Master Hand noticed this and turned on him. "Luigi, what seems to be the problem?"

"I-" He gulped again. "I don't have a plan."

Ness chuckled and shook his head. Luigi faced the ground with panic in his eyes. Unable to help him, Master Hand then announced, "It's time for the votes. Pikachu, choose your bobble head."

Pikachu nodded and scampered up to the voting jar. After surveying the remaining bobble heads, he made his choice. He scampered up to his seat and happily waited for the results.

Young Link went up to vote.

Snake went up to vote.

Luigi went up to vote.

Marth went up to vote.

"Unfortunately, you've shown you do not know how to play this game."

Bowser went up to vote.

"Goodbye, brat. Won't miss you."

Ness went up to vote.

Popo went up to vote.

Kirby went up to vote.

Master Hand floated to the jar, picked it up, and set it down in front of the tribe. "I will now tally the votes. Whoever has the most votes at the end of the tally shall be eliminated and will leave Tribal Council immediately." He paused and picked up the bobble head.

"The first vote belongs to Young Link."

Young Link shot daggers at Pikachu, who tried to avoid eye contact. He wanted to demand why Pikachu would betray him like that, why he wouldn't just stick with the plan, but then the second vote was read.

"The second vote belongs to Young Link." Master Hand pulled out the third. "The third vote belongs to Popo."

Popo glanced at Young Link, also realizing something was incredibly wrong. Why were they the ones being voted for? Popo turned to Ness, wondering if he'd said too much accidentally, wondering if Ness was lying to him.

"The fourth vote belongs to Popo. The fifth belongs to Young Link. The sixth belongs to Luigi."

Luigi gulped again. His eyes darted from person to person, trying to see who was targeting him. His eyes fell on Bowser, who barely noticed him.

"The seventh vote is for Young Link. The eighth vote is for Popo." Master Hand paused, pulling out the final vote. "With the final vote, the third player eliminated from Super Smash Bros: Survivor is Young Link. Please hand me your torch."

"Why…" Young Link sputtered, looking from person to person. "Why did you... betray me? Why?"

His eyes fell on Ness, and he immediately identified the culprit. His disbelief turned into venomous anger, and he continued to stare only at Ness as he snatched his torch and stuck it in the ground before Master Hand. He barely noticed it as it was snuffed.

"Ness," Young Link vowed as he stood at the edge of Tribal Council. "I'll see you soon." With that, he disappeared into the darkness.

"Eight of you remain," Master Hand announced. "Your numbers are few, but you will recover. You're all strong. The game has only just begun. Do not be discouraged; there is plenty of time for you all to get revenge on those who wronged you. Good luck in future challenges, and I hope this is the last time I see you all for a while."

Without a word, and Popo both relieved and angry, the tribe got to their feet and left Tribal Council.

"I can't believe it," Young Link said in a voiceover. "They all betrayed me. Just like that. My brilliant plan… gone… and they chose Popo over me? They chose that idiot over me? They're all dead to me. Ness is going to be eliminated soon too, I promise you that. And Bowser? He'll get what's coming to him. I knew I shouldn't have trusted him. I bet it was all his fault. He won't last long either. Good luck to the other Links. They're the only ones I have faith in anymore."
