"Trace?" He yelled out as he went after her. Calling her name agaim as he pushed open the school doors. "Tracy?" He yelled out again looking around.
Quickly and quietly she slid into a group of overgrown bushes and hoped that he did not see her. Her heart was broken into a million pieces and she probably wouldn't be able to even speak to him without tears streaming down her face.
"Damn it. Where the hell did she go?" He looked around for a minutes as he walked over to his car, got inside and pulled away.
Standing there for a moment she tried her hardest to regain her composure. She was just about to step out from behind the bush when she heard the sneaky voice of Amber walking down the steps. Standing next to Brad and Fender she went to open her mouth about of devious plan that worked but quickly shut it as she saw the familiar pair of shoes hiding in the bush. The only person that would ever wear a dreadful pair of shoes like that was none other than Tracy Turnblad. They were cheap and overweight just like her. If Tracy really thought she could hide behind a set of bushes she was sadly mistaken. Looking at shoes it sparked an idea. Amber knew exactly what she had to do. She smirked slightly and thought for a moment as she turned to talked to the boys.
" I'm really hoping that when Link finds her that he set her straight. She was just there to help him catch her break. Nothing more. It is sad that she would think differently then that. But you know girls like her. I have no idea why she would ever think a guy like Link Larkin would ever want anything to do with a short and stout whale like her. I mean really. How does Tracy Turnblad think she could ever compete with me. No competition. "
"Amber. That's..." Brad sighed a bit. " don't you think you're a little hard on the girl? Maybe if you took a minute to get to know her that you would like her. Honestly though Amber his actions didn't really seem like that of a person who didn't want anything to do with her. And that kiss. Like it wasn't one of those I just want to kiss you because I have to. I mean everyone saw it. And like i said it wasn't some little kiss. I think you have to face it Amber. I think you might have lost him to her."
Tracy stood there silently touching her lips as she tried to keep the tears and sounds from her lips.
"Really Brad. You honestly have no idea what you are talking about and you obviously have no idea when Link is just messing around. It was all just a part of our plan. Link called me after he dropped her off last night. Four hours on the phone talking and laughing about how easy it was to trick her." Amber laughed. " She fell for it Hook, Line & Sinker. That boy knew exactly how to play her. Too bad she's seen us kissing this morning. I'm sure Link could have played it out a little bit longer. Maybe he would have gone as far as 2nd or 3rd base. Wouldn't that have been such a story to share?" she laughed knowing that Tracy had heard exactly what she wanted her to hear. Smirking, mostly to herself, she made her way back into the school with the boys in tow.
Once she was gone Tracy came out from the bushes and took the back way home. Once she seen the hardy har-hut she made her way inside. She knew that her father was probably on lunch so she picked up the phone, called the show and explained she was sick and then she would not be in today. She then snuck into her house and up to her room.
Laying down Tracy couldn't help but cry. How dumb could she be? Amber was right. What would a boy like Link Larkin ever see in a girl like her?" She looked at the pictures on the mirror as the tears streamed down her face. Her make up was running but she didn't care. She did not care about anything. Looking up at the picture of him smiling she tried to wipe away her tears but it was nowhere near as quickly as they came. There he was, the boy she loved and she was nothing but a cruel joke to him. Amber's words played over and over like a bad broken record that refused to stop. "Maybe he would have gone as far as 2nd or 3rd base. Wouldn't that have been such a story to share?" The tears came harder and faster. Never in her life had anything hurt so much.
They love you Link. Yea. Not for long." Those words played over in her head as tears streamed down her face as she slowly drifted off to sleep.
Link looked everywhere for her. The hardy har-hut. The Turnblad's. Back to the school. Everywhere. When he went back to Tracy's house her mom assumed that she was at school and would be headed to the show. That was right. The show. She would be at the show. The first one since the integration. Tracy would not miss that. She worked way to hard to make it happen. Walking into the studio he went to her mirror but she wasn't there. He asked everyone if they seen her all to which she replied no. The next place I went was to see Corny.
" Hey Corny, have you seen Tracy?" He asked as he walked over to him.
"No. I was just about to ask you the same thing. She called in and said that she was sick. I could hardly believe it when I heard it. She sounded like she. " Corny sighed as he looked at him. " was trying to pull off one of those fake coughs that you have when you don't want to go to school. " he could tell that whatever was going on Link knew exactly what it was and he wasn't going to push him to say.
"Thanks Corny. " he sighed and walked over to the mirrors. Sighing softly he touched hers. He was going to find her. He was going to make her understand. No matter what it took.
Amber walked over seeing him sitting there. "We are doing the spotlight dance tonight Link."
He turned around and rolled his eyes looking at her. "Like hell we are. " he was frustrated and didn't care what he said. "We aren't doing anything Amber. Don't you think you have done enough. That was quite a stunt you pulled back there. "
"Me. What did I do so wrong? Don't tell me you didn't enjoy the kiss! I could tell in the way you kissed me back."
"KISSED YOU BACK!" He practically screamed out. "You have got to be completely deranged. "
"Keep telling yourself that Link. Then maybe you will believe it too. " she smirked knowing full well that he didn't but as long as everyone else thought he did who cares. "And as for doing this dance you have no choice. See that Tracy never showed up today. I will see you on the dance floor baby " she laughed and walked away.
Tracy woke up a bit later and looked at the time. Why should she miss the show because of Amber and Link. Cleaning herself up she made it to the show right after the opening and watched as Link and Amber dance. She saw her arms slid around his neck, his class ring still on her finger, her head resting against his shoulder, his hand locked around her waist. Who was Tracy kidding? Amber was right. He could never feel what he did with Amber with her. She would never be Amber Von Tussle and no matter how much it hurt she would never be with Link Larkin. Ever!
