Chapter 4

Life in The Burrow was a completely different life to the way things had been at Privet Drive. The Dursleys loved having everything neat and ordered, and the Weasleys' house burst with the weird and the odd. The most weird thing Scarlett had come across so far was the mirror that had yelled at her to brush her hair, and loud bangs coming from Fred and George's room. She tried to not question the latter, for fear of what they'd tell her they were trying to create.
The weirdest thing, though, wasn't the mirrors yelling or the ghoul in the attic, it was the fact that nobody seemed to hate either Scarlett or Harry. In fact, they seemed to quite like them.
Mrs. Weasley fussed over the state of their clothes, and tried to get them both to eat fourth helpings at almost every meal. Mr. Weasley liked to bombard the two of them with questions about Muggle life, asking them to explain how plugs and the post system worked.
'Fascinating,' he said, as they talked him through using a telephone, 'Ingenious, really, how Muggles find a way to get on without magic.'
They heard from Hogwarts a sunny morning, around a week after they had gotten to the Burrow. Scarlett and Ginny had woken up earlier, and were sitting at the kitchen table, Scarlett reading through her letter as she absent-mindedly stirred her drink. It was nothing different to last years letter other than the list of assigned books, as term would start on the 1st of September and they would be leaving from Kings Cross station. The list of books, however, was long.

'The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 2 by Miranda Goshawk

Break with a Banshee by Gilderoy Lockhart
Gadding with Ghouls by Gilderoy Lockhart
Holidays with Hags by Gilderoy Lockhart
Travels with Trolls by Gilderoy Lockhart
Voyages with Vampires by Gilderoy Lockhart
Wanderings with Werewolves by Gilderoy Lockhart
Year with the Yeti by Gilderoy Lockhart'

The moment Ginny saw Harry, she knocked her bowl on the floor with a loud clatter, and Scarlett jumped so much she fell backwards off her chair. At that exact moment, Fred and George walked in, still in their pyjama choices of tshirts and sweatpants, and burst out laughing, which was good for Ginny as she could retrieve her dish and return to the table quickly with little embarrassment, however the twins had witnessed Scarlett's falling first hand, and probably wouldn't let her forget it for years.
'Shut up.' she said, before they could even open their mouths, and Fred held his hands up in defeat, walking past her and sitting down. George pulled her up and she sat down with a huff as he smirked,
'So, Hogwarts letters?' George asked, as Harry and Ron ripped open their envelopes,
'Dumbledore must know the two of you are here,' Mr. Weasley said, before handing letters to Fred and George. It was silent for a few more minutes as everyone scanned over their letters, Scarlett pulling funny faces at Ginny as she tried to get her to laugh.
'I think the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher must fancy Lockhart,' Fred started, as he glanced at Scarlett's list, 'Bet it's a witch.'
'Oi! Don't stereotype. I think he's repulsive.' Scarlett said, crinkling her nose as she remembered what he had looked like,
'This isn't going to come cheap,' George said, a quick glance at his parents, 'Lockhart's books are really expensive...'
'We'll manage,' Mrs. Weasley said, though there was a worried look on her face, 'I expect we'll be able to pick a lot of Ginny's things up secondhand.'
'Oh, are you starting Hogwarts this year?' Harry asked her, and she blushed as red as he hair, before nodding and putting her elbow in the butter. Scarlett felt slightly sorry for her, it was obvious she fancied Harry; for whatever reason. Just then, Ron's elder brother, Percy, walked in. He was already dressed, his Hogwarts prefect badge pinned to his sweater vest.
'Morning all,' he said briskly, 'Lovely day.' he say in the remaining chair, but lept up again immediately, pulling from underneath him a moulting, grey feather duster – until Scarlett realised it was breathing.
'Errol!' Ron said, taking the limp owl from Percy and extracting the letter from under its wing. 'It's Hermione's answer – finally – I wrote to her telling her we were going to try and rescue the two of you from the Dursleys.' he ripped the letter open and read out loud,
' "Dear Ron, and Harry and Scarlett if you're there,

I hope everything went all right and that Harry and Scarlett are okay, and that you didn't do anything illegal to get them out, Ron, because that would get them into trouble as well. I've been really worried and if they're alright, you must let me know at once – or perhaps you'd better not if you're using the same owl, because I think one more delivery might finish this one off.
I'm very busy with schoolwork, of course-" how can she be?' Ron said in horror, 'Term hasn't even started yet! "And we're going to London next Wednesday to buy my new books. Why don't we meet in Diagon Alley? Let me know what happens as soon as you can. Love from Hermione."'
'Well, that fits in nicely then. We can go and get all your things then, too.' Mrs. Weasley said, 'What're you all up to today?'
Harry, Ron, Fred, George and Scarlett had planned to go up to the hill to the small paddock the Weasley's owned. It was surrounded by trees which blocked it off from the view of the village, meaning it was perfect for playing Quidditch. Of course, they couldn't use real Quidditch balls, it would be rather odd to have to explain if they escaped and flown to the village, so instead they threw normal balls.
No less than five minutes later, they were marching up the hill, with their broomsticks over their shoulders. They had asked Percy if he'd wanted to play, but he said he was busy. So far, Scarlett had only seen Percy at mealtimes, as he stayed shut in his room the rest of the time.
'Wish I knew what he was up to,' Fred frowned, 'he's not himself. His exam results came the other day, the day before you did; twelve O.W.L's and he hardly gloated at all.'
'Ordinary Wizarding Levels,' George explained, as he saw the dumb look on Scarlett's face, 'Bill got twelve too. If we're not careful, we'll have another head boy in
the family. Don't think I could stand the shame.'
'...so they're exams?'
'Yeah,' George said, 'Take them in your fifth year.'
'Did Charlie do well?'
'He passed Care of Magical Creatures.' George replied, 'Not sure about the other stuff.' he shrugged. 'Dunno how Mum and Dad are going to afford all out school stuff this year,' George said after a while, 'Five sets of Lockhart books! And Ginny needs robes and a wand and everything …' Harry and Scarlett stayed silent. Their parents had left them a small fortune of Galleons, Sickles and Knuts – only used in the Wizarding world, useless in the Muggle shops.

Mrs. Weasley had woken them up early the following Wednesday, much to the distaste of those involved. After a quick breakfast, they all pulled on their coats and Mrs. Weasley took a flowerpot off the kitchen mantelpiece, peering inside
'We're running low, Arthur.' she sighed, 'We'll have to buy some more today...ah well, guests first! Who's going first?' she asked, glancing between Harry and Scarlett, holding the flowerpot out towards them,
'Er – what?' Scarlett asked, glancing down at the powder, 'What – erm …'
'They've never travelled by Floo powder,' George said, as realisation hit Ron,
'Yeah, I forgot,' Ron said,
'Never?' Mr. Weasley said, 'How did the two of you get to Diagon Alley last year?'
'The Underground...' Scarlett muttered,
'Really?' Mr. Weasley asked eagerly, 'Were there escapators? How -'
'Not now, Arthur,' Mrs. Weasley said, 'Floo powders quite a lot quicker, dear, but goodness me, if you've never used it before-'
'They'll be fine, Mum, they've coped with worse,' Fred said, 'Here, watch us first.' he took a pinch of the glittering powder out of the pot, then stepped intot he fire and threw the powder into the flames, which turned a brilliant emerald green.
'Diagon Alley!' he said, winking at Scarlett as he vanished.
'You have to speak clearly, dears,' Mrs. Weasley said to the twins, and be sure to get out at the right grate …'
'The right what?' Scarlett asked, as
'Well, there are an awful lot of wizard fires to choose from, you know, as long as you've spoken clearly -' she began, as George dipped his hand into the pot
'They'll be fine, Molly dear, don't fuss,' Mr. Weasley said,
'But Arthur, if they got lost, how would we explain that to their Aunt and Uncle?'
'They'd probably be pleased, don't worry,' Scarlett muttered, and George scoffed, before he stepped into the fire, disappearing moments later.
'Dudley would think it was brilliant if we got lost up a chimney,' Harry said, as Mr. Weasley helped himself to some Floo powder,
'Well … all right, you two go after Arthur.' Mrs. Weasley said, 'Now when you get into the fire, say clearly where you're going-'
'And keep your elbows tucked in,' Ron advised,
'And your eyes shut,' Mrs. Weasley said, 'The soot-'
'Don't fidget, or you might fall out in the wrong fireplace,'
'But don't panic and get out too early, wait until you see Fred and George.' Harry went first, as Scarlett's mind whirred with the thoughts of all she had to do next. Harry took some of the powder, then stepped into the fire. He took a breath, before speaking,
'D-Dia-gon Alley,' he coughed, and then he was gone.
'Did he – did he say it wrong?' Scarlett asked quickly, turning to Ron, who's eyes were wide,
'Er – best just go,' Ron said, 'Yeah, yeah.'
'...ok.' she said, worry spinning in her mind as she took her own position in the fire. She closed her eyes and threw the powder down, speaking as clearly as she could
'Diagon Alley.' and then it felt as if she was being sucked down a drain. The world was spinning extraordinarily fast, and there was a loud roaring in her ears. Suddenly, she felt herself lurch forwards and she fell onto a stone floor.
'Ow.' she groaned, as she was pulled up by a red head, 'That is horrendous!'
'Posh.'
'George I swear I will cut your ear off.'
'I'm not too keen on losing my ear, to be honest, so I'd rather you didn't.'
'Well shush. Where's Harry?' she asked, frowning as she looked around and couldn't see anyone other than Fred and George,
'He – he went before you?' Fred asked, and she nodded,
'Ah. Well, erm, he's probably just gone a bit too far.'
'What do you mean probably?' she hissed, and Fred and George shared a look,
'Well, er,' George muttered, 'If he hasn't come out here-' the fire sprung to life again, and Ron appeared,
'Where's Harry?'
'Lost.'
'He – he'll turn up again, right?' Scarlett asked, feeling sick, 'He can't have just disappeared?' another flash, and Ginny appeared,
'Of course,' Mr. Weasley said, reappearing from where he had been looking around, 'He's probably just gone a grate too far, in which case he's still in Diagon Alley.'
'You're sure?'
'Yes, Scarlett, quite sure.' Mr. Weasley smiled, and Percy fell into the shop.
'Well, how do we find him?'
'He'll probably turn up, but when Molly shows up we can go and see if we can find him.'
'All right.' she muttered, shuffling on her feet nervously.
'Calm down,' Fred said, 'He's fine.'
'He isn't here!' she hissed, and Mrs. Weasley showed up at last.
'Right, now everyones her-' she stopped, frowned, and counted the heads. 'Who's missing?'
'Harry, dear.' Mr. Weasley sighed,
'Well he's probably only gone a grate too far,' Mrs. Weasley said, 'He didn't speak clearly enough, probably in the shop next door.' and with that, the family plus Scarlett traipsed into the other shop, with Scarlett looking around every chance she got. She left the Weasley's for a few minutes and walked outside, leaning against the shop wall,
'Scarlett!' a voice yelled, and she whipped around to see Hermione Granger running towards her, she grinned and threw her arms around the girl, 'Why didn't you reply to my letters?!'
'It's a long story...' she muttered,
'Where's Harry?' Hermione asked, as the two girls began walking towards Gringotts bank, the white steps clear from there surroundings,
'Lost.'
'Lost?' Hermione repeated,
'Floo powder...it's a lot more tricky than people make it sound.'
'OH! I know! I've heard all sorts of stories about people turning up in the strangest of places!'
'That's really not helping, Hermione.'
'Sorry, it's just - hold on,' she frowned, 'Harry? Harry! Over here!' Scarlett looked around and saw her brother walking towards them, with Hagrid taking long strides next to him. The two girls ran over and Hermione hugged him,
'What happened to your glasses? Hello, Hagrid! Oh it's wonderful to see you again! Scarlett was just telling me you got lost - are you coming to Gringotts?'
'As soon as we've found the Weasleys,' Harry said,
'Well, yeh won't have ter wait long,' Hagrid grinned, and the three children turned around to see Ron, Fred, George, Percy and Mr. Weasley sprinting up the street to them,
'Harry!' Mr. Weasley panted, 'We hoped you'd only gone one grate too dar - Molly's frantic, she's coming now-'
'Where did you come out?' Ron asked, looking Harry up and down,
'Knockturn Alley.' Hagrid said, grimly,
'Excellent.' Fred and George grinned,
'We've never been allowed in.' Ron said, enviously,
'I should ruddy well think not,' Hagrid growled,
'So Harry got to see this amazing, forbidden alley and I didn't? Just because I enunciate my words? That's pathetic.'
'Aw, is lickle Scarlett upset that she missed the special secret alley?' George pouted, and she glared at him,
'Just because your mum would rip your head off if you stepped near it.' as she said this, Mrs. Weasley came into view, her handbag swinging wildly as she came towards them, Ginny clinging onto her other arm,
'Oh, Harry - oh, dear, - you could have been anywhere -' before Harry could even speak, she pulled a brush out of her bag and began sweeping the soot off of him, then Mr. Weasley took Harry's glasses, tapped them with his wand, and returned them, the glasses looking as if they were new.
'Well, gotta be off,' Hagrid said, who was being praised by Mrs. Weasley, 'See yer at Hogwarts!' and with that, he strode off, head and shoulders above everyone else in the crowded alley.
'Guess who I saw in Borgin and Burkes?' Harry said quietly to Ron, Hermione and Scarlett as they climbed the marble steps into the bank, 'Malfoy and his father.'
'Did Lucius Malfoy buy anything?' Mr. Weasley asked, sharply, and Harry quickly turned to him,
'No - he was selling-'
'So he's worried,' Mr. Weasley said with a seemingly smug grin, 'Oh I'd love to get Lucius Malfoy for something ...'
'You be careful, Arthur,' Mrs. Weasley said, suddenly, 'That family's trouble. Don't go bitting off more than you can chew -'
'So you don't think I'm a match for Lucius Malfoy?' Mr. Weasley said, giving his wife a look, but was quickly distracted when he saw Hermione's parents, who were standing rather nervously at the counter than ran the length of the marble hall, waiting for Hermione to introduce them. 'You're Muggles!' Mr. Weasley said, happily, 'We must have a drink! What's that you've got there? Oh, you're changing Muggle money! Molly, look!' he pointed excitedly at the ten pound note that Mr. Granger was holding,
'Meet you back here.' Ron said to Hermione, as the Weasleys, Harry, and Scarlett were led off to their own underground vaults by a a goblin. The way there was rather odd, they were sat in small carts that sped along miniature train tracks that seemed to go for miles. The journey towards the fault itself was enjoyable, however the feeling of joy was replaced with dread when the vault had been opened. There was a small pile of silver sickles inside, and merely one gold galleon. Mrs. Weasley felt right into the corners before sweeping the entire contents into her bag. What made the situation worse was the twins going to their own vault, which had a larger amount inside. They blocked out the contents as much as they could as the stuffed handfuls of coins into their bags. When they got back outside and onto the marble steps, they all separated out. Percy muttered something about new quills, and Fred and George had spotted Lee Jordan and run off. Mrs. Weasley and ginny were going to the secondhand robe shop, and Mr. Weasley was insisting on taking Hermione's parents to the Leaky Cauldron to have a drink - and no doubt ask them more about muggle life.
'We'll meet a Flourish and Blotts in an hour to buy schoolbooks.' Mrs. Weasley said, hastily setting off with Ginny. 'And not one step down Knockturn Alley!' she shouted at Fred and George. Scarlett, Harry, Ron and Hermione strolled down a winding, cobbled street. They bought four large strawberry ice creams, walking down the alley with them whilst admiring all of the fascinating things in the window. Ron gazed at a set of Chudley Cannons robes, the ice cream melting in his hand. Hermione eventually dragged them off to buy ink and parchment from the shop next door. They met Fred, George and Lee in Gambol and Japes Joke Shop, with the three stocking up on large amounts of items that they would not doubt use throughout the year.
'Thanks,' George said all of a sudden, and before Scarlett could reply the ice cream was taken from her,
'Hey!'
'What? You weren't eating it.'
'Doesn't mean you can take it!'
'Too late now.' he shrugged, and she narrowed her eyes, before pushing his wrist up, making the ice cream smash against his face. He took it away and was left with a fair amount of pastel pink on his nose.
'Hot.'
'Obviously.' he smirked, wiping it off, 'I hate you sometimes.'
'No you don't, you love me. Everyone knows it.'
'I feel like I should have been informed.' he muttered, rolling his eyes at her as they paid for their items. The two groups then separated out again, and Harry, Scarlett, Ron and Hermione later found the other Weasley brother, Percy, in a small junk shop; he seemed to be deeply distracted by a book titled Prefects Who Gained Powers.
'Sounds fascinating.' Ron muttered, as he read the back cover, "'A study of Hogwarts prefects and their later carreers"'
'Go away,' Percy snapped,
'He's dead ambitious, Percy,' Ron told the three, as they left, 'He's got it all planned out. He's going to be the next Minister of Magic.'

Around an hour later, the four made their way to Flourish and Blotts - and they were by no extent the only one's attempting to make their way toward it, with a massive crowd on either side of the doors, trying to get in.
The reason became obvious when Scarlett saw a sign above one of the windows '"Gilderoy Lockhart will be signing copies of his autobiography Magical Me today. 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM."' she read aloud, 'I guess that makes it more obvious-'
'We can actually meet him!' squealed Hermione, and Scarlett raised an eyebrow, 'I mean, he's written almost the whole booklist!'
'Yay.' Scarlett muttered, as Hermione beamed. The crowd was mostly made up of women, all of whom looked to be around the age of Mrs. Weasley. The four slowly made their way into the bookshop, and a long line went all the way to the back of the shop; no doubt where Lockhart was signing the copies of his books. They grabbed a Standard Book of Spells, Grade 2, each, and sneaked into the line where the rest of the Weasley's were now standing.
'Oh, there you are, good,' Mrs. Weasley said, sounding breathless as she patted her hair down, glancing towards Lockhart, 'We'll be able to see him in a minute.'
'You're always late.' Fred smirked, and Scarlett elbowed him in the ribs,
'Why were you in such a rush to see Lockhart, Freddie? Hiding something?'
'Oh yeah, look at him, he's a gorgeous man.' Fred said, pulling a face as he looked towards the table at the back of the shop. Gilderoy Lockhart had curly, blonde hair, with brilliant white teeth. His robes were a blue that matched the colour of his eyes, and a similar coloured hat rested at a funny angle on his head.
'He looks like an overgrown man child.' Scarlett said, and Fred and George both scoffed, 'What?'
'Are you trying to tell us you don't fancy him?'
'Am I meant to?' she said, frowning, 'He looks like an arrogant prat.'
'He is.'
'But apparently he's attractive.' George shrugged,
'I can't say I agree - but apparently every other female does.' she said, looking around at the women crowding him. It was then Scarlett noticed the short, irritated looking man dancing around Lockhart, snapping photos at every chance he got.
'Out of the way, you,' he snarled at Ron, moving back to get a better shot, 'This is for the Daily Prophey-'
'Who cares.' Ron said, rubbing his foot where the photographer had stomped on it. Gildery Lockhart had heard him, and looked to Ron - before his eyes landed on Harry and Scarlett. He stared for a few seconds, before his eyes widened even further and he jumped up in his chair,
'It can't be! Harry and Scarlett Potter?'
'Oh no.' Scarlett said, making a move to hide behind George, but Lockhart had been quicker, diving forwards he grabbed the two of them and pulled them to the front, causing a burst of applause from the crowd. Scarlett felt her entire face burn as she stood there, unable to move and feeling as if she was glued to the spot.
'Nice big smile, you two, together we're going to make the front page.' and with that, Lockhart gave a large, bright smile. After Lockhart was done, the two attempted to slide away but Lockhart threw his arm around Harry's shoulder, and Harry pulled Scarlett back to him.
'Ladies and gentleman, what an extraordinary moment this is! When the young Potters here stepped into Flourish and Blotts this morning, they had no idea that they'd be receiving my entire collection, free of charge.' the crowd cheered, 'But, they will also be receiving far more than just my book! The two and all their schoolmates will be getting the real magical me. Yes, I have the pride and pleasure in announcing that I have taken up the post for Defence Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts School!' a loud applause sounded. Scarlett wanted to crawl away and die as she was handed Lockhart's entire book collection - the two managed to stagger away with the weight of the books, and found themselves standing near Ginny,
'You have these,' Harry mumbled, dropping the books into her cauldron, 'I'll buy my own-'
'Bet you loved that, didn't you?' a voice sneered, and Scarlett whipped around to come face to - well, shoulder, with Draco Malfoy; he, like Ron, had grown more than she expected over the Summer. 'The famous Potters. Can't even go into a bookshop without making the front page.'
'Leave them alone.' Ginny said, glaring up at Malfoy,
'Hey, look Potter! You've got yourself a girlfriend!' Malfoy smirked, and Ginny turned bright red as Ron and Hermione made their way over.
'Oh, it's you.' Ron said darkly, 'Bet you're surprised to see these two here.'
'Not as surprised as I am to see you in a shop, Weasley. I suppose your parents will go hungry for a month to pay for all those.' Ron turned as red as Ginny had done,
'Oh my gosh. You're so creative.' Scarlett drawled, rolling her eyes, 'How about you grow the fuc-'
'What's going on?' Mr. Weasley's voice came, as he struggled to reach them, Fred and George following. 'It's too crowded in here, let's go outside.'
'Arthur Weasley.' a voice started, and Scarlett turned to see Lucius Malfoy.
'Lucius.' Mr. Weasley replied, coldly,
'Busy time at the Ministry, I heard,' Mr. Malfoy said, slowly and calmly, 'All those raids...I do hope they're paying you overtime?' before he gained a reply, he looked over into Ginny's cauldron, his eyes finding the old, battered copies of books that had been used previously. 'Obviously not. Dear me, what's the use of being a disgrace to the name of wizard if they don't even pay you well for it?' Scarlett felt George tense up next to her, and gripped onto his hand, preparing herself to need to pull him back before he did something stupid. He relaxed slightly, but his jaw was still set.
'We have a very different idea of what disgraces the name of wizard, Malfoy.'
'Clearly.' Mr. Malfoy said, his eyes travelling to Mr. and Mrs. Granger, who were looking in the direction, but making no move to come over. 'The company you keep, Weasley...and I thought your family could sink no lower.' George made a move forwards, but Scarlett pulled him back as Mr. Weasley had thrown himself at Malfoy. The two men were knocked into a bookshelf, and dozens of spell books came tumbling down, one landing where Scarlett had been standing seconds before. There were yells coming from all directions, but the loudest of all was Mrs. Weasley shrieking 'No, Arthur! Stop!' it was a complete disaster. Scarlett was shoved aside by the assistant, stepping on both Fred and George's feet as she did,
'Sorry,' she said, loudly,
'Break it up, there, gents, break it up -' the assistant said, to no avail. Before they knew what exactly was happening, Hagrid was wading towards them through the sea of books that were now on the floor. He pulled Mr. Weasley and Mr. Malfoy appart effortlessly, Mr. Weasley coming away with a cut lip and Mr. Malfoy a large bruise on his eye from where he had been hit with an Encyclopaedia. He was still clutching Ginny's old transfiguration book in his hand - which he shoved back into her cauldron,
'Here, girl. Take your book. It's the best your father can give you.' he wrenched himself from Hagrid's grip before leaving the shop.
'Yeh should've ignored him, Arthur.' Hagrid said, almost sending Mr. Weasley flying into the air as he straightened his robes, 'Rotten ter the core, the whole family. Everyone knows that - no Malfoy's worth listenin' ter, bad blood, that's what it is - come on, now, let's get outta here.' the group quickly hurried onto the street, the Grangers shaking all over and Mrs. Weasley beside herself in fury.
'A fine example to set your children ... brawling in public! What Gilderoy Lockhart must've thought -'
'He was pleased.' Fred said, casually, 'Didn't you hear him when we were leaving? He was asking if he'd be able to work the fight into his report and use it as publicity.'
'You okay?' George frowned at Scarlett, and she nodded,
'Yeah, why?'
'You're still holding my hand.'
'Oh, sorry.' she murmured, taking it away, 'Just - I've never really had to watch other people fight before. It's kind of scarier when you're not involved. Especially when it's your dad, he never freaks out.'
'I know what you mean, but it's fine, it is Malfoy after all; not like it'd matter if he'd died back there.'
'Fair point.' she smirked. The group headed back to the Leaky Cauldron, where Harry, Scarlett and the Weasley's would be travelling back to the Burrow (sadly by the use of Floo powder). They said goodbye to the Grangers, who would be going to the pub on the other side of the road. They started to make their way home, Scarlett ensuring Harry said the words right this time.
She had to admit, Floo powder definitely wasn't her first choice form of travel.
