Chapter 4 - No Rest For The Wicked

Rob continued to chase behind the distance figure of a woman, he had to admit, she was quick on her feet for a spirit. She really was scared of something because there was no other reason to run like such a mad man the way she is.

He continued to give chase to the distant woman as she dashed across streets and weaved between back roads and side streets.

'Why does it seem like she's trying to lose something?' Rob thought, by the way she moved she looked to be trying to escape something, knowing it wasn't him he suspected that it might be one of those things again, the same monster that attacked him last night. He glanced around himself, checking to see if he could find what was troubling the spirit but he saw nothing. Although he couldn't see anything he could somehow sense a presence nearby, stalking them.

Rob hadn't even noticed how far or how long they had been running for and they certainly had been running for sometime now and had been heading to the outskirts of the city too. Rob just tried to keep up and not lose sight of the woman. He noticed, even while at a distance, she seemed very oddly dressed for some reason, she clearly wasn't your average spirit everyday spirit.

Black hair that swung wildly around with her every step, she appeared barefoot too which was even more odd. Her outfit consisted of bright orange and gold colored robes, almost like an old Japanese style dress. Just who was this spirit? Rob had been around for a long time and never before had he seen such a spirit before.

Rob deadpanned to himself, since when can you call seeing spirits an average everyday thing?

The spirit suddenly darted down a side street, Rob quick on her tail followed her, he saw her spirit through a dumpster as he continued to chase but he swiftly leapt over it. As he exited the other end of the alleyway Rob saw the spirit enter the city park. Before he entered however he saw a large blur enter over the wall surrounding the park before disappearing into the trees.

'There, now I know what's going on!' Rob mentally screamed to himself, he rushed into the park after the spirit. Another one of those things was creeping about and Rob wasn't having any of their shit today, not like last time.

The park was a large somewhat dense forest of oak and birch trees, fields popped up randomly around the park to make space for activities or picnics or whatever people do in parks. A few paths lead you all around the park to most areas but they didn't lead everywhere and a run down Japanese style monastery near the top on one of the hills on the other end of this huge park.

Rob entered the park and saw the spirit take off into the woods, abandoning the path, in the complete opposite side to where most people will be. She was isolating herself, Rob wasn't sure if she was doing that intentionally or not but this could easily go terribly wrong with for her as well, he didn't even slow down for a second as he made his way through the woods.

Every now and then he'd lose sight of her as she threw herself through a bush or over some obstacle only for her to pop up again for Rob to follow. Oddly enough, even when she was out of sight, Rob felt as is he wasn't going to lose her, he could sense her presence amongst the pressure that must have been caused by a creature similar to one he already killed.

The morning dew had layered the ground Rob ran across, leaving small traces of where he had come from. Rob didn't even notice how filthy his clothes were getting he was far to focused.

The spirit burst through a bush ahead, Rob quickly did the same. On the other end emerged into a small clearing of trees, a mess of some uncut grass, blotches of dirt, a few fallen trees and a dried up pond on the far side.

The spirit was about half way across the clearing when she was swept off her feet and thrown backwards as something large landed in front of her, kicking up dirt and blocking her path.

As the dirt settled it revealed a creature not all too different from the one Rob had fought, mainly it had a near identical white mask on its face. This one however was longer more narrow, with a tail flicking wildly at the end. This beast appear to have no legs, just two huge arm it used to stand and move on, a brown fuz ran down the beast from head to near the end of its tail in a line with blended well with the more black and grey coloration of its skin.

"Running can only help for so long!" A deep voice chuckled darkly. Rob didn't stop his pursuit as he began to near the spirit who lay across the ground.

"I have to! I need to find him!" The spirited cried out, well that explained what she was doing.

"Not anymore!" The beast screeched as it raised its claw, going to injure first before devouring her, the spirit prepared itself to take the hit.

Rob, however, leapt over the spirit and swung a right roundhouse kick to the creatures face causing it to tumble over itself to the left.

Everything seem to move in slow motion for a second as this all seemed unreal, especially for the spirit who wasn't expecting to be saved.

Rob landed with a thud in front of the spirit as the creature rolled a few feet over to their left. He took a quick glance back to the woman behind him, she wasn't looking at him as she was more shocked to see her recent stalker go for a tumble.

Getting a good look Rob see how odd this woman looked. Her style of clothing suggested she was a really old spirit, the chain attached to her chest was very short as well, it had to be the shortest chain Rob had seen from all his years with spirits. Just how old was this spirit on this earth?

Rob refocused his attention on the beast in front of him, standing between the spirit and the creature.

He looked to his clenched fist, he had to come up with a way to fight this creature. He wouldn't be caught off guard this time.

'Lets hope I can figure out how to get those swords back like last time or I might have some trouble on my hands.' he thought to himself but he was pulled from this train of thought by the voice of the spirit behind him.

"Who are you?! And how can you see me?!" She yelled from her sitting position, eyes wide open in shock from having been saved. She must have never meant anyone who could see her before.

Rob opened his mouth to speak but before he could answer however another voice pitched in, "It doesn't matter! He dies too!" The creature had gotten up again and had took a quick swipe of its claw at Rob, however he was ready for a fight this time and merely jumped over the strike before back kicking the creature in the face again, this time sending the beast slipping backwards as it screech in both anger and pain.

"Insect! How dare you!" It roared furiously before giving an ear bleeding screech. The spirit cringe and grabbed at her ears clearly feeling the pain, Rob on the other hand was more annoyed by the stupid pointless screech.

"Could you shut the fuck up!" He yelled at the beast, the creature stopped screeching and glared at Rob who remained standing between it and the spirit. His bad mood from the bad before popped up again.

The spirit was rather surprised, she held her hand over her mouth looking at Rob surprised about how he so easily would anger this thing.

"Don't the Hollow! What are you doing?!" She shouted at Rob's bravery and what she thought was his stupidity.

"Hollow?" Rob raised an eyebrow at the name, "So that's what these things are called?"

The spirit continued to look at him in complete shock, just who was this person. All this time she had been on her own in her search but this young man randomly shows up to help?

"Come here!" screamed the Hollow as it charged Rob, claws digging into the ground, ripping up chunks of dirt as it stomped toward him.

Rob quickly moved off further to the right, trying to lead the beast now known as a Hollow away from the spirit. The spirit was what it was chasing thus far so it was obviously more important to it than Rob was.

The Hollow swiped at Rob but he backpedaled the strike. The Hollow didn't give him time to recover however and just continued to push forward, forcing Rob to retreat by constantly dodging backwards. From striking downward or swiping left and right, Rob dodged as best he could.

One swipe however caught his jacket and tore the right side of it shreds. In its frustration it raised both arms and slammed them into the ground, smashing the snow, ice, and dirt into chunks and debris.

Capitalizing on this, Rob kicked off the ground, leaping forward before using one of its arms to launch himself into the Hollow, uppercutting it.

The Hollows head flung backwards but he took it well so he recovered and countered quickly before Rob could anticipate it. The Hollow spun on the spot and slammed Rob with its tail sending him bouncing off the ground, kicking up snow and ice on impact.

'Damn. Caught me with that one.' Rob jumped back to his again, 'This is stupid, I need to get my hands on those swords again but how the hell do I do that?!' Robs frustration was growing at a quick pace, it was more frustrated with himself more than anything. He was banking on using the swords that he somehow had the other day but he had no idea how he did that before.

He might as well be married to trouble considering how involved with it he is.

"Watch out!" Yelled the spirit, reacting quickly Rob dived off to the left and narrowly avoid another swipe of the Hollows tail. Good to know the spirit was watching his back.

"Stop moving cretin!" The Hollow roared at Rob, "You've distracted me for long enough!" The Hollow turned its back on Rob and instead charged at the stationary spirit. She hadn't gotten up due to shock and awe but she was now regretting that.

Not letting the Hollow go Rob charged it from behind, he was surprising quick on his feet because he caught up. He leapt at the Hollow from behind but the Hollow had wanted that, its tail shot up and wrapped itself around Robs waist before swinging him over head and straight into the solid earth in between the Hollow and spirit, creating a small crater.

"Fuck!" He groaned out as he felt himself being lifted again, the Hollows tail still grasping him.

The Hollow held Rob up to its face and began to laugh sinisterly, "Got you…"

Rob felt the trinkle of blood on his head and the soreness of the impact but he remained intensely focused on the Hollow. He was extremely frustrated and seriously pissed off about this whole ordeal.

He needed to figure something out.

That's when he felt himself feel all heavy, the world began to move on its own.

And that's when it all went dark.

The next thing he knew he stood in a dark void, completely empty of anything in all directions he looked. Rob spun around, looking all around him, trying to find something but found nothing. Rob groaned slightly to himself, why did this keep getting weirder and weirder by every passing moment. He must think he was slowly losing his mind.

This place felt different to the other place he been before. He could felt it in his body and soul. There was no noise, dead silent. Where this place was peaceful, the other was hellish and chaotic.

Right as he was about to say something, to call out to the voices from before, a light formed mere feet away from him. The light grew to become blindly making Rob shield his eyes and stagger backwards, his body could feel the intensity behind it.

As the light subsided he turned back to where the light was but was remained was a hell black and white flame, cracking and burning chaotically and wildly. Thick black plumes of smoke towered into the void above, it surrounded him like a fog.

Rob felt himself drawn to the flame, he walked closer to it. As he did the smoke began to slowly twist and drift toward him, drifting up and down his arms and legs, pouring past his chest as he moved closer.

He stood next to the, oddly sinister feeling, flames, he knew he had to do something here so he raised his hand up to the fire. He stopped just before it, it was strange, he couldn't feel any sort of heat. It actually felt draining more than anything.

Wasting no more time he threw his hand into the blaze and was immediately met with an intense pain.

This pain was unreal at first but it wasn't like the pain of a burn. This fire wasn't burning him but it was causing pain. He keep his hand in there for as long as he could until he felt something. Inside the fire his hand grasp something hot and solid.

He instinctively knew what this was. It was the same sword he had before. Rob threw his other hand in search of the other blade. He found it almost instantly.

Grasping both blades tightly he began to pull the swords from the flames. The more he pulled them the stronger the pain grew.

He could feel himself losing to the pain but Rob pushed on and pulled harder. He began to roar in pain as the blades flew forth from the flames.

The chaotic blaze died right as the swords were pulled forth, Rob immediately felt heavy again before the world around him once again warped.

The Hollow that grasped from was sent tumbling backwards screeching in pain, destroying anything it slammed into, its tail had been severed from that ordeal. Black smoke dispersed over the small woodland clearing. The spirit had to brace herself and cling to the ground to avoiding being thrown. An intense pressure shook the ground they stood on before exploding outward.

The pressure would surely be felt across the city but for only a single instant before fading.

That pressure would surely attract attention to anyone or anything that could feel it.

The black smoke slowly spread itself out, clearing the area. There on the ground was a body, laying motionless and still. Above it stood Rob, the Odachi swords from before in each hand wearing the same attire he had on before.

A dark red Robe and Hakama with a black Shitagi underneath, black Kutsu on his feet and black Yugake on his hands. Rob suspected he'd be in the outfit quite a lot in the future.

The spirit looked on in awe at Rob and his new more menacing and heroic appearance, she'd never imagined she'd see something like this. However, she stopped herself and took a moment to think.

Rob grasped both his swords tighter, "So that worked, now if only I knew how the fuck I did that..." Rob deadpanned to himself, sure he did it but he still had no idea how he managed to do it in the first place.

"Do you know what you've done?!" The spirit yelled, Rob flinched at how annoyingly high pitched t was but still glanced over to her.

"What did I do?" He asked somewhat annoyed while placing himself between her and the Hollow.

Before she could answer Rob turned and blocked an overhead strike from the Hollow. The Hollow was a lot more manageable to deal with like this.

The next strike came as a side swipe which he blocked with the sword in his left before chopping down on the arm with his right blade, severing the arm.

The Hollow screeched once again, grasping at the severed limb, Rob took this opportunity to attack so he leapt up before swinging both blades downwards, slashing the Hollows chest, landing right below the Hollow.

He followed up that attack by ducking low and thrusting his blade upward, piercing its mask and face, pulled him down with the blade still implanted in the Hollow and than rammed his other sword through its chest.

With one final gasp and cough the Hollow began to dissolve into dark blotches before disappearing completely.

Rob stood there, victorious but was interrupted by the spirit, "We have to leave now!" She scrambled to her feet, she stepped delicately and swiftly stopped by Rob's body laying on the ground.

"What do you mean?" Rob asked calmly, much to her surprise and annoyance. Hoisting one sword onto his shoulder, the other sword by his side.

"You released a pulse of spiritual pressure!" She continued to yell, Rob just gave her a strange look. He didn't understand what the problem was.

"What's the problem with that?" He continued to ask, trying, slightly, to figure out what she was going on about. This was all still so new to him. She took a quick breath and began to calm herself down.

"That much spiritual pressure will attract attention." She explained to him, she leaned over Rob's body to check for injury. Well at least she cared about his body, she seem to know something about all this.

"Attract who exactly?" As if on cue two objects crashed into the ground a few meters away, one off to his right, the other off to his left.

The smoke cleared and there stood two Hollows, both roared at Rob and the spirit. These two looked very different to the previous Hollow he fought. One resembled a bat as its front arms were thin arms with web going from the top to near the end of its small legs. Its entire body was a dark green color, a white mask on its face.

A trait of Hollows it seems.

The other one was built more like a large gorilla, small legs, big arms, still had a long tail and a dark blue color skin. Its mask however had a large horn protruding from its forehead.

The both Hollows stood watching for a moment, it was in that single moment the spirit spoke up weakly. "More Hollows." Replying to his previous, now redundant, question.

Rob moved to stand between the Hollows and his body and the spirit. He clearly didn't care about having to fight more, he wasn't finding this situation very hard to deal with. Dangerous? Yes, difficult? No. The spirit on the other hand looked to be very worried and concerned, hopefully not just for her sake either.

Both rushed him, the bat flying leaping into the air flying above. The bigger issue was the charging gorilla like Hollow.

Rob met its charge with his own, one blade outstretched in front of him, the other held back ready for a strong swing.

The Hollow went for a shoulder bash but Rob dodged it by slipping off to the side, out of its path, as the Hollow rushed passed him Rob dragged the blade through one of its side, slicing it open. The Hollow collapsed from the sudden pain and went tumbling forward for a bit before getting up again, roared and turning to Rob again.

All attention on Rob it seemed.

The Hollow charged him but before Rob could deal with that he sensed another attack coming, Rob held the blade in his left hand vertically parallel with his back and peeked over his shoulder just in time to see and feel the other Hollow strike his blade with its small thin fist.

Swinging to face the at like Hollow, Rob caught the second strike with his right blade, creating a small deadlock. Rob decided to quickly use his head to get out of this deadlock so he leaned back and headbutted the Hollow creating a flinch.

Using your head right?

Unfortunately he couldn't act on it, he didn't waste time turning around and instead backflipped high into the air, being narrowly missed by the swipe of the large Hollow.

As he was above him Rob kicked the air, which to his surprised, moved him forward quickly. He sliced down the back of the gorilla like Hollow with both blade. Cutting almost completely through it, the Hollow roared one last time before dissolving into a dark mist just as the first one did.

Now all that was left was one Hollow.

The bat recovered from the headbutt and fly up into the air, Rob stood ready for some kind of attack. It didn't take long for it to try like its friend.

The Hollow swooped down and went for a fly by claw slash but missed as Rob flipped over the strike causing the Hollow to sail right past. However, the Hollow didn't stop to turn back and instead continued toward the spirit and his body.

Rob tensed for a second trying to come up with a plan. The spirit held tight to Rob's body, clinging to it for dear life as the Hollow closed in on her.

As the Hollow neared it suddenly roared before hitting the ground and skidding to a halt a mere few feet in front of the spirit. She released a breath she didn't know she was holding and looked to the Hollow. It wasn't moving, why did it stop like that? That's when she noticed the blade sticking out of its back. The sword had pierced its back and went straight through to the front, leaving the blade impaled.

Rob stood far behind it, his everlasting scowl still on his face, only one blade in hand. He walked over to the Hollow when he saw it start dissolving like the others. He was preparing to throw the second blade if he saw it even twitch to life.

He grasped his other blade before making it to his body and the spirit. He quickly examined them both, "You alright?"

She remained speechless for the moment so she only nodded to him. He resheath one of the blades on his back, chains moved on their own to wrap the blade and than hold it to his back.

He held out his hand waiting for her to take it, when she hesitated for a bit Rob spoke up, "Take it already." He groaned.

Once she was on her feet again Rob leaned over his body, he could feel it again. That strange pull like before, he reached out and touched his body's forehead. He blinked once, breathed out once and instantly felt it. He was back in his body.

He sat up from the lying position his body had been in and turned to the spirit.

After unwanted moment of silence, "Well?" He asked. The spirit gave him a raised eyebrow, what was he expecting exactly?

He rolled his eyes, "Your name?" He finally clarified, standing up as he did.

The spirit blinked for a second and cleared her throat, "I am Lady Mizero," She gave a courteous bow, but a more old timely sort of bow, "I am grateful for your help."

"Yeah sure," Rob quickly waved off the gratitude, he didn't care for that sort of thing, now what he was hoping for was some answers. "Just who are you and what the hell are those things?"

Rob was expecting an answer but instead he got this, "Before I answer we must leave. Go to somewhere safe for us to talk. You could have easily attracted more than two more Hollows with that pressure you exerted during that ordeal." She explained her reasoning, "Do you know of somewhere safe to go?"

Rob scratched his head and growled to himself, 'This is really starting to give me a headache.' He thought before speaking, "Yeah, I know one place." The place he was referring to was his apartment, it was where he went to if he wanted to be left alone for awhile. Nobody would try bother him there or him talking to himself like a madman.

"Alright, please, lead the way and quickly." She looked down, "I do not wish to stay any longer."

With that Rob began to lead her out of the park, groaning to himself, mostly. "Forgot a bad day, this is the start to a shitty week." He mumbled, loud enough for it to be heard by him but not the spirit next to him.

They headed off in the direction they had come from toward the exit of the park and from there to Robs apartment.

However, unknown to them both, they were being watched.

From the shadows of the treeline of the woods near the clearing, on the opposite side to where Rob and Mizero were heading a large shadowy figure stood watching them, observing them, examining them.

Its gaze went from the spirit for only a moment to studying the human male more intently. The creatures tongue licked its sharp fangs. The creature was big and resembled that of a mix of human and rat with its autonomy.

A sinister and dark laugh slipped from its mouth, "So the man saved the spirit?" The creature continued to examine Robs retreating figure before laughing again. "A large tasty wave of pressure from him? He's a dangerous one for sure." The beast licked its teeth again, "I think I found my next victim."

The creature rustled in the bushes it stood in, "I do love a challenge but I do hope he puts up a good chase!" The creature giggled evilly to himself, clearly enjoying the idea of what it would do.

Before turning to leave the creature gave one last look at Rob, "Lets see who wins. A Man or The Rat." With that, the creature disappeared into the darkness and shadows of the trees.

The walk back to Robs apartment was a silent one. The spirit walked closely behind Rob, clearly wanting to be as close as possible for protection. 'Those Hollow things must be a serious thing for her.' He thought to himself.

Rob didn't speak on the long-ish journey back to his. Firstly he cursed the police for making him walk back on a cold morning like this, not that he really noticed the cold at all. He hardly wears anything yet the cold doesn't affect him. His thoughts moved from the police to what exactly happened back there, he questioned why the spirit was being chased by those things and if the spirit was being chased why was he attacked the night before if they're more interested in spirits. He rattled his brain trying to come up with the questions he'd liked answered the most.

After a long enough walk back they finally reached his apartment block. They made their way inside and up to his apartment, almost completely unnoticed by anyone except one elderly man who passed them on the stairway up.

As they entered Robs apartment, closing the door behind him Rob immediately threw his jacket on the couch and looked to Mizero who had moved to the kitchen area of the apartment, she had sat herself down on a chair facing toward Rob. "Explain," He stopped before adding, "Please." You could see it in Mizero that being somewhere safe helped her keep somewhat calm. That alone was worth the journey.

"My name is Mizero Harina and I'm sure you can tell I'm a spirit. Correct?" Getting a nod she continued, "You know I'm spirit but you probably don't know for how long." She looked down and clenched her fists slightly, which didn't go unnoticed. "I've been a spirit for the past four hundred years!" Now that was a shock, Rob had met hundreds, thousands maybe even hundreds of thousands of spirits but none of them had been a spirit for four hundred years.

When she received no reply Mizero assumed it was for her to continue. "I've been searching for someone that whole time. I was taken from my home as a prisoner of war, when I was killed I became lost, I couldn't find my way home."

Rob could tell this wasn't easy for her to say, she'd probably never met someone who could actually help her besides other spirits but they all have their own problems.

Rob sighed heavily, he wasn't going to bother will all the questions he wanted to ask. Like about those Hollow things or maybe she knew what happened to him while he changed into that… Warrior form? But she had her own problems and Rob wasn't about to burden her any further.

Looks like he was on his own with all this for now.

"So I went searching for my home but mostly I was looking for my love." She gave a pause, clearly it pained her to think of them not being together. "I searched everywhere I could in search of him but I could never find him. I know he wouldn't have leave me alone, I know we'll be together again one day so until then we will search for each other." Once she had finished explain she took a few breaths to calm herself.

Rob didn't say a word for a moment, he was trying to think of the right thing to say.

"You need to pass on." She looked toward him, confused. Did he not hear what she just said? They had to find each other and he was telling her to move on?

"But I can't I need to find him!" Her tone picked up somewhat but didn't phase Rob at all. It must be hard to be alone for almost four hundred years and keeping hope and fighting to for what you want. Admirable to say the least.

"You need to move on, for all we know he could have already moved on somewhere. He could be waiting for you somewhere else instead of here, among the living." Rob had helped many spirits pass on from this world. He had no idea what waited for them on the other side but being trapped here wasn't meant to happen, that's for damn sure.

"But what if he hasn't?! What is he's searching for me as well? If I just give up than who will guide him to me?! I have to do this! No one else will!" She continued to yell but was quickly cut short.

"I will." His response surprised her, he'd help her reunite with her long lost love?

"What?" She asked somewhat weakly, still surprised by his answer.

"I'll help him. I've been helping spirits since the first moment I could speak and I've been able to see them the moment I was born." He walked over to Mizero. "I promise you, I will find your love and I will get him to you. But you need to pass on. You need to be waiting on the other side for him when I do. I will take up your search for you, your time here is over, let me take over for you."

Mizero was speechless, a random stranger would do that for her? Nobody would expect the man with the intimidating aura and scowl to be kind enough to help with such a task. But this was the same man that came rushing to her aid just because he saw she needed help. So willing to help for no benefit to himself.

"Why?" She asked, her question being simple single word ones.

Rob sighed, "Because it's what I've always done and will continue to do. Simply because I am the only one who can do it."

Such a simple answer.

Mizero went silent again for quite a long time too. Her mind must be racing, debating with itself, fighting itself.

Eventually, after a long time, it seemed that Mizero had come to a conclusion, she looked up to Rob, he didn't react but she had tears running down her face but she still had such a happy smile.

"Thank you…" she said through a tear stained face, her voice weak but full of nothing but gratitude. Her last words as right that second she became even more transparent, the chain on her chest completely disappeared and slowly began to fade into a twinkling flickering white light. Rob had seen this many times before.

This was a spirit that was passing on.

And then she was gone. Mizero had passed on from this world and she had passed on her terms.

Rob was now alone in his apartment, he sat in the chair Mizero had just been sat in. He leaned his back, he could feel it still aching but did nothing about it, his mind was a mess with questions with no answers and choices to make with no end in sight.

What the hell was going on? What was happening in his life?

Rob had no answers but he knew what did. Time. Only time would now tell him what was going to happen, he was going to have to go along for the ride.

Rob finally stood up, he might as well not let the day go to waste. He might as well go out and do something productive for himself, even if it was just a simple walk around town to clear his mind.

But first Rob went to go change and clean himself, especially the small trickle of dried of blood on his head. After washing himself and grabbing new clothes which consisted of a white shirt, black trousers and a brown pair of hiking boots. He grabbed his outback hat and his jacket before heading for the door.

He stopped as he gripped the door knob and groaned. 'Why do I feel like shit is going to hit the fan again…' Ignoring the thought he open the door and closed it behind him and began to head down the stairway to head into the town.

He'd should have really listened to that thought because it certainly wasn't wrong because it wasn't just Hollows that felt that spirit shockwave.

People were certainly going to be noticing Rob now.
