"Ron did you pack your dress robes?" Mrs. Weasley screamed up the stairs.

"Harry dear, are you sure you won't reconsider and come with us?"

"Thanks Mrs. Weasley but I really can't. But I'll make it for the wedding on Saturday." Harry replied.

"Oh! But Harry can't you make it for your birthday? You don't want to spend your seventeenth birthday on your own here do you?" Mrs. Weasley replied.

"Well, I don't know Mrs. Weasley. I thought maybe I'd go to Godric's Hollow on Friday and well ... ya know, visit my parents." Harry finished lamely.

"Oh! Harry I'm Sorry … sometimes I forget that your parents ... well I think of you as my own son. You do what you have to and we'll celebrate your birthday soon after ... OK?"

"Yeah … thanks Mrs. Weasley." Harry replied.

With the usual organised chaos the Weasley family found all their belongings and within a reasonable amount of time were ready to floo to the Burrow.

"Goodbye Harry, we'll see you for breakfast on Saturday." said Mrs. Weasley squeezing Harry in one of her signature hugs.

"Harry …" Mr. Weasley shuck his hand "… stay out of trouble OK."

"Yes sir." replied Harry.

Next came Hermione "Don't you dare take off without me." Hermione warned, "We're in this together, remember."

Harry nodded his agreement and hugged his best friend goodbye, giving her a quick wave as she spun away through the floo network.

"No matter what happens mate, just call and I'll be there OK?." Ron embraced Harry and was next into the floo.

Last came Ginny "Harry could you help me with my trunk?" she called from the hall.

"Sure Gin." Harry called as he went to the hall to give her a hand.

"Oh! Merlin." thought Harry as he swallowed the lump in his throat at the sight of Ginevra Weasley standing in the hallway, bending over her trunk wearing a light summer dress that showed her lithe figure off to the best possible advantage. "That is just so unfair!" Harry's mind continued but his eyes remained locked on target like a muggle missile.

"Thanks Harry." Ginny said with a none too innocent smile.

Picking up his end of the trunk Harry carried it to the floo and placed it inside. Turning he again had sight of Ginny in all her beauty. Walking up to him, she gave him a very brief hug and with only a small wave was gone to the Burrow, leaving a bamboozled Harry standing and staring at the Fireplace in Grimmauld Place.

Ginny Weasley arrived at the Burrow and stepped out of the fire place into the waiting arms of her Father. "Hey Princess." he said giving her a hug.

"Dad, you haven't called me Princess since I was a little girl." she chided.

"Well, you haven't looked in need of a hug as much, since you were a little girl." He replied with a raised eyebrow and a knowing smile.

"Dad … I feel like I'm being dishonest … I'm trying to lure Harry back. Shouldn't he be allowed to choose, if and how he wants to be … with me … or without me?" she asked meekly.

"Normally I'd agree honey, but Harry is making his decision based on the belief that you'd be better off without him. That may be true, but unless you both have your chance to find out … well, let's just say I believe in you … both of you." Mr. Weasley smiled.

"Thanks Dad … I … I love him Dad and he … he loves me." Ginny admitted to her Father.

"All the more reason to bring him back. You be strong and we'll get Harry's head on right. He doesn't stand a chance against the entire Weasley might." Mr. Weasley told her, with a mischievous grin.

Ginny giggled "Thanks Dad." With a kiss on the cheek for the best Dad in the world, she hovered her trunk upstairs and entered her room, to be greeted by the sobs of her roommate. "Hermione, what's the matter?"

"Oh Ginny, I've made a mess of everything." Hermione snivelled wiping her nose and her eyes with a damp and tired handkerchief.

"Tell me." Ginny said sitting beside her friend and hugging her.

So Hermione did, "… but when I kissed him, he hesitated and I thought I'd ruined everything, but the … then he … he really kissed me and I was so happy, I thought my heart would burst. At first I thought he was just being careful around your Mum. But he's just grown more cold and silent; I think he's embarrassed about it. I think he re-regrets ev-ever kissing me at all." Hermione cried into Ginny's shoulder.

"Well we see about this …" Ginny said in an angry tone "… nobody treats my friend like this and gets away with it, especially not my prat of a brother. Stay here I'll be back in one minute." she said to Hermione and stormed off in the direction of Ron's room.

"Ron!" she called as she banged open his door.

"What the hell …" Ron began, but never finished as he rolled off the bed to avoid a bat bogey hex.

"You spineless prat, how dare you treat Hermione this way." Ginny roared as Ron continued to hide behind his bed.

"Hold on …" Ron started "… I know I've acted like a prat, I never should have taken advantage of her … I couldn't help myself."

"You bloody well did help yourself, you used her and now you want nothing more to do with her … I thought she was your friend!" Ginny shouted at her stunned brother.

"Ginny, please stop, it's alright, please." Hermione pleaded from the doorway.

"Hermione … Ginny … I never…" Ron began.

"Oh shut it you." snapped Ginny "Hermione you can't seriously let this prat treat you like this …"

"Hermione, I never meant to take advantage, I knew you were upset and I shouldn't have had my arm around you and all that … I'm really sorry Hermione … can we just go back to the way things were … can't we just be friends? I never should have kissed you … please." Ron pleaded.

"Oh you git, you've had your fun now you want to just forget about …" Ginny began but was interrupted by Hermione.

"Ginny wait …" she said calming her ranting friend "Ron?"

"Hermione, I know what you're going to say … I'm a stinking git and you never want to lay eyes on me again. I don't blame you … you … you held my hand and I though … it doesn't matter what I thought … I'm sorry Hermione … Oh! Merlin, Harry…"

"What about Harry …" Ginny answered with concern.

"Gods, he's gonna kill me." Ron held is head in worry "Hermione please, tell me you'll let me help Harry, I'll stay out of the way please … Oh God's I've made a mess of everything."

"Ron?" Hermione said as she walked over and placed her hand over his "Ron …" he looked up and into her deep brown eyes. "Hermione?"

"Ron … I kissed you." She smiled shyly "I kissed you."

Ginny smiled a bitter-sweet smile, "Why can't I catch Harry so easily?" she thought as she left the room and quietly closed the door.

"You kissed me? … but I had my arm around you and I …" Ron started.

"Ron you didn't take advantage of me, you held me when I was scared and protected me when you thought I was in danger and you kissed me when I kissed you, when I wanted you to kiss me." Hermione said sitting in his lap and running her free hand through his hair "Just like I want to be kissed right now." She finished with a rosy blush; she couldn't believe she was being so forward.

"You are beautiful love; I don't know what I did to deserve you." Ron said, lightly kissing her lips.

"You're biased and that's the third time you've called me 'love'." she replied nibbling on his lower lip.

"Oh! Sorry about that I …" Ron began.

"Don't be … I like it when you call me that." She blushed again.

"Hermione? Will you be my girlfriend?" Ron asked with a little trepidation.

"Oh! Ron … you don't know how long I've waited for you to ask me that!" she said kissing him deeply.

"I'll take that as yes then love!" Ron said

"I only allow my boyfriend to call me love." Hermione confirmed and continued to take advantage of her and her boyfriend's seclusion.

The time passed quickly in Grimmauld Place. Harry was rarely alone with visits from Kingsley, McGonagall, Fred and George and unexpectedly Madeye Moody.

"Hello boy..." Moody said as he marched in to the library from the hall "... what's that you're reading?"

Harry didn't actually know the name of the book "Hello Professor ..." he started.

"Potter, how many times do I have to tell you that I never taught at that ruddy school of yours? So please stop calling me Professor!"

"Sorry Sir ... eh it's to do with magic draining wards ... nasty things." Harry continued.

"Aye Potter that they are, but they can be useful too." Moody winked.

"How so sir? I mean, if you attack one and aren't strong enough to break free it will drain you right down to your core and death." replied Harry.

"Very good Potter, but what if you tried to feed the ward rather than attack it hmmm?" Moody winked.

"Then it would react in opposition ... and try to feed you its magic. But sir wouldn't that be almost as dangerous?" Harry asked truly intrigued by the idea.

"Well yes that's true as far as it goes Potter, but if you were attuned to the magic in the ward then you could happily drink your fill." Moody replied

"Could you show me sir?" Harry asked.

"OK Potter, let me see you cast the ward on that lamp." Moody said pointing at a particularly ugly table lamp on the desk.

"OK sir I'll try, although I've never actually cast this spell before." Harry drew his wand and carefully placed the ward on the lamp with the correct wand movements and incantation "Magis Nutrias".

"How was that sir?" Harry asked unsure if he had managed to do it correctly.

"Very good Potter ... very good. I'm sorry I didn't get the chance to teach at that school of yours, if you're an example of what Dumbledore managed to encourage." Moody smiled, which was a disconcerting sight. "Now to tune in to the magic without activating the ward you need to interact with it in a non-threatening way ... for example 'lumos'." Moody cast a light onto the lamp "When the light hits the ward it flickers, increase or decrease the light until its steady, now with the same intensity feed the ward and ..." Harry's ward used itself up feeding Moody with Harry's magical energy. "Good strong ward Potter."

"Wow, thank you sir … could I try?" Harry asked in anticipation.

Moody grinned again and placed the ward back on the lamp.

Harry cast a light on the ward and changed its intensity until he could see it remained steady "It feels like they are vibrating in the same rhythm sir, doesn't it? Kind of like two musical notes." Harry said to Moody. Harry had his eyes closed the better to feel the vibration, just as it seemed that the ward and his light were vibrating in unison, Harry started to feed magic to the ward. The feeling of magic flowing into him was intense. "Merlin's nuts …" cried Harry as what felt like an electric current seemed to seep into his body.

"Ha!" Moody barked "Shoulda warned ya about that. It's an unusual feeling, hey Potter?"

Harry exhaled loudly "Yes sir!" checking the lamp Harry couldn't detect the ward anymore "Sir, can you take too much energy from a ward?"

"No Potter, you might not be able to keep all the energy you take from a ward but it will just drain off. Kind of like pouring too much mead into your cup, the excess just spills over." Moody explained.

The conversation continued like this for hours with Moody showing Harry many unusual uses for ordinary spells and Harry performing each new adaptation with ease. It was getting late, when Harry trying to open a hole in an anti-apparation ward asked Moody "What should it feel like this spreading effect the ward has?"

"Potter I don't understand what you mean by feel, you can't feel magic, detect it with certain spells yes, but not feel it. But when you scan it the ward should seem to expand, it's that expansion that stop you apparating, if you can pierce the ward right at its centre, like I showed you, you should, if you're quick enough, be able to apparate away."

"But Sir I can feel it, it kind of vibrates." Harry said "This ward feels twisted like a figure eight."

"Are you sure?" Moody asked sceptically.

"Yes Sir!" Harry replied.

"Just step outside the room for a minute Potter." Moody said "I want to test this."

Harry complied and five minutes later Moody called him back in "OK find them and tell me what they are … without your wand."

Walking around the room, as always, Harry could feel the various magics present, some old, some new. That this was unusual came as a surprise to Harry as he'd always been able to feel magic, ever since he found out he was a wizard. Checking the desk he found the first ward "Magic Draining Ward on the desk sir." and then to Moody's astonishment he fed it and absorbed it without his wand.

"Merlin's beard Potter, who taught you wandless magic?" Moody exclaimed causing Harry a moment's panic.

"No-one Sir, I've never done it before …" Harry answered staring at his hand as the realisation of what he'd just done struck him, "It just seemed to naturally follow on from feeling the ward … I didn't think about it."

"Do you realise what you've done?" Moody asked grabbing Harry wrist and inspecting his hand for injury.

"No Sir …" Harry replied feeling sure he'd done something very bad "I didn't mean it Sir, really it just kinda happened …" he continued lamely.

"Potter wandless magic usually just happens, but not intentionally; that's what most underage magic is … unintentional wandless magic. It's almost never used by qualified wizards because it takes so much power to do even the simplest things." To demonstrate Moody waved his hand and lit the candle on the table. "That took a lot of effort, for very little result. There's only one wizard that I know of that was capable of performing useful wandless magic and that was Albus Dumbledore. What you just did was possibly even beyond him and you did it with ease." Moody sat down in astonishment.

After a moment of consideration Harry continued to walk around the room. Moody sat in silence lost in his own thoughts. Harry didn't feel any different or that he had done anything extraordinary, it just felt normal. He found the anti-apparation ward on the coal bucket and a sticking charm on the chair beside the desk in quick succession. After a little more searching he found a silencing charm on one candlestick and a confundus charm on another on the mantel piece, but the last one he couldn't identify.

"Sir …" Harry ventured not really wanting to break Moody's concentration but as he was feeling tired he thought that it was better to get this over with.

"Oh! Sorry Potter, you've given me quite a lot to think about." Moody replied "What is it?"

"I've found five more charms but I can only identify …" Harry started to list the charms.

"Five more charms? I only placed four more." Interrupted Moody "Where's this fifth charm?"

"Well Sir, I think you placed one on the chair, the bucket and the two candle sticks, but I can't identify the one on the mantel piece."

"Which is probably because I didn't put one on the mantel piece." replied Moody.

"Oh! … Well Sir, I think there's something here?" Harry said pointing at the area left of centre on the mantle.

Moody stood and pointing his wand at the spot Harry indicated trying to detect the presence of magic. The spot suddenly glowed red as a drawer appeared briefly.

"Stand back Potter." Moody said as he pointed his wand at the drawer on the mantle. With an angry sizzle the drawer flew open and four blurs raced across the room and embedded themselves in the opposite wall. Harry went to look to see what they were. Four darts, each one oozing something vitriolic that was corroding the wall paper.

"Don't touch them Potter…" called Moody "I don't think that's pumpkin juice."

"No Sir…" replied Harry walking back to see what Moody had discovered.

"What have we got here?" Moody wondered out loud.

"Don't touch it Sir … please!" Harry snapped urgently "It's wrong … corrupt somehow."

"Very well Potter we'll do it your way." Moody agreed with a look of surprise "What do we do with it?"

"Kreacher." Harry called.

"Yes Master Harry, what can Kreacher do … arghhh foul stinking thing." Kreacher spat on the ground and moved away from the mantle "Master must close that … please Master."

"What is in there Kreacher?"

"Nasty evil thing Master … nasty vile trap for anyone except for Head of Black family."

"What is the trap protecting?" Harry pressed

"Kreacher is not knowing Master … Master Orion and Master Regulus died so close together that Master Orion never gave whatever it was to Master Regulus and Master Sirius didn't know it was there."

"Am I Head of the Black family now Sir, now that I've inherited everything from Sirius?" Harry asked Moody

"I wouldn't think so Potter, depends what was in Sirius's will. You own the Black family fortune and estate but you never became a member of the Black family so I'd say more than likely not." Moody surmised. "No if anyone is, I'd say it's that twisted bitch Bellatrix Lestrange."

"Kreacher can you help me to disarm the trap?" Harry asked

"Kreacher can't Master … but Kreacher can catch demon once trap is sprung, hold demon … but not for long Master." Kreacher nodded but his ears drooped and he looked scared.

"Demon?" Harry asked to no-one in particular.

"Dark and dangerous magic Potter." Moody replied "Demons can't come here on their own, but they can be summoned and bound to a particular purpose. It works like this, you open a hole to their realm big enough for them to put a metaphorical finger through, if their finger touches anything they can come through and consume it, otherwise they must remain on their side of the hole. That is the most typical type of contract and the magic to bind the demon has to be very strong and very specific, even the air here is like rich soup to them. But of course the demon will use any means to come through and stay, because this place is like a king's banquet to them. Thankfully although they are very dangerous, they are more cunning than intelligent."

"So if you or I put our hand in that drawer, we'll have a demon here trying to snap it off and eat it?" Harry asked unbelievingly. "Just when I thought I knew about most of the bad stuff, this comes along."

"Trust me Potter; you've only seen a tenth of the bad stuff!" Moody growled.

Kreacher tapped Harry on the leg "Master …" he said hesitantly seeking Harry's attention.

"Yes Kreacher?" Harry asked kindly.

"Master Demons is stupid, Master … Demon eat whatever puts its hand or hoof in the drawer. Kreacher can fool Demon; make it come so Master can keep his arm."

"Can we banish it back to where it came from?" Harry asked Moody.

"No Potter, we would have to destroy the contract and we don't even know where that is." Moody answered "But we can move the metaphorical hole, but only once the Demon is either entirely here or entirely in its own realm."

"I really don't like that thing being there and I'd really like to know what's in that drawer that needs that level of protection." Harry mused.

"Well let's get rid of the damned thing." Moody growled "I'm getting tired and I can't sleep in a house with a Demon in it, now can I?"

"OK Kreacher, you do what you can to bring it here and hold it" Harry said "Then Sir if you could send it's spy hole to the bottom of the ocean or the surface of the moon, we can see what's in that drawer.

Kreacher apparated away and returned within minutes carrying a pig's leg in his arms. "Demons is only coming here if it thinks what it can feel is alive Master. So Kreacher will make stupid Demon think this piggy is alive." Kreacher smiled a look Harry had never seen on the old house elf's face before.

Kreacher transfigured the pig's leg into a human arm and magically gave it warmth and a pulse. "Can Master levitate that into the drawer?" he asked Harry. "Then Kreacher can bind it when it comes."

Harry was tempted to see if he could levitate it wandlessly but thought now probably wasn't the best time to be messing around. So using his wand he sent the fake (but disturbing) hand into the drawer, from the far side of the room. What happened next left Harry speechless.

A smell like rotting infected meat befouled the air. Without a sound a hunched humanoid form filled the room from floor to ceiling. Its quivering flesh oozed grey slime and covered its massive muscular bulk in abundant folds. It grabbed hold of the fake arm with lightening speed and crammed it into a gaping fang filled mouth, devouring it to the sound of crunching bones.

Kreacher walked calmly up to the giant mound of stinking flesh and kicked it in the shin, then stamped his foot three times on the floor. The Demon howled as if struck a mighty blow, hunkering down in the middle of the room.

Moody finishing his incantation 'Porta anchoram mentis oculo', raised his wand and pointed it at the mantle drawer.

Kreacher turned to the Demon and said "Go away!" and it disappeared just as silently as it had arrived, leaving behind it a lingering smell of corruption.

"That's better." said Moody "How'd you like the Black family pet, Potter?" Moody grinned.

"Wha … Where did you send that thing?" Harry asked in a stunned voice.

"Its new home is in the Department of Mysteries, where, believe it or not, they actually study these things!" Moody replied with a look that clearly showed what he thought about the nutters in the Department of Mysteries. Moving over to the mantle, Moody stretched forth his hand to explore the drawer.

"Sir! …" Harry began.

"Relax Potter, I told you … that things home has been moved it's perfectly safe now." Moody explained and reaching his hand into the drawer he withdrew a velvet pouch and a ring. "Well …" he said tossing the ring to Harry "… if you're not already Head of the House of Black, I'd say that puts you one step closer to being."

"What is it?" Harry asked examining the ring. It had the crest of the house of Black carved into a yellow diamond.

"It's the signet ring of the house of Black, worn and used only by the Head of the house. If you ever find a locked room or chest or anything that cannot be accessed that belonged to the House of Black, that ring will more than likely be the key." Moody explained "Now what have we here?" he continued as he emptied the contents of the bag onto the desk. "That's more than likely the key to the Black Family Vault in Gringotts, rightfully yours this Friday." he said handing Harry an ornate gold key "Oh! And here's another piece of nasty magic!" he said showing Harry a large silver torque.

"What is that Sir?" Harry asked "It feels bright and dark at the same time."

"It's called a 'Dementor's Teat' and they've been outlawed for centuries." Moody replied putting the torque back in the velvet bag.

"What's it used for, or what does it do Sir?" Harry continued.

"Well Potter it's used to tame a Dementor, or at least tame it towards the members of one family. As to what it does … well it feeds a Dementor a constant memory of intense happiness for protecting members of a family and intense pain for hurting those family members."

"Isn't that a good thing Sir … to be able to control a Dementor?" Harry wondered, he personally thought it was far better than having them act independently.

"Yes Potter it is, but the reason they are illegal is not because of what they do, but more as to how they are made. These torques were goblin made and forged into each to give the memories enough intensity and sustenance to control a Dementor was the soul of an innocent child."

Harry shuddered at the enormity of the evil in the bag before him.

"Come on Potter that's enough horror and darkness for tonight, I have to say even a night house-sitting with you Potter gets exciting. Don't worry I'll have this destroyed tomorrow and the poor innocents soul released. Good night Potter." The last was said as Moody walked out the library door and headed upstairs to bed.

Harry wasn't sure if he'd ever sleep again.
