The Morganville Werewolves - Chapter 4

Claire's Point of view

I was walking past Common Grounds going home and it was getting dark. Amelie had kept me longer than I felt comfortable with and now I had to walk home in the diminishing light. I am super paranoid which every human has to be to avoid becoming a snack to the vampires.

I had just rounded a corner that lead to the Glass House and I heard footsteps. I hastened my walk trying to calm my racing heart which wasn't working. I resisted the urge to run the rest of the way. The footsteps got louder and closer then I was thrown to the ground.

I couldn't help but yelp as I hit the ground and looked back to see who had pushed me. He was tall with sandy coloured hair and red eyes and he smiled down at me.

"I must admit I had hoped you would of ran. I do like that." He said.

"Probably why I didn't then." I said my voice surprisingly firm. I began to get up but he grabbed my shoulder and held me down.

"Wow you speak. The others hardly made a sound while I drained them of their life." He said. I winced at his hard grip.

"Maybe you killed them before they had a chance to speak." I said, hopelessly trying to get his hands off of my shoulder.

"Now now don't speak. You'll need it for the screaming. Though I wouldn't want that. We would attract unwanted attention." He said. I squeezed my eyes shut and I felt his cool breath but he didn't bite.

"Like mine?" A cool voice said. I looked around and thank the heavens Amelie had come to save me. Or I hoped it was Amelie.

"Um no miss." The man said.

"I would appreciate it if you didn't feed off of her. She is protected by me." Amelie said.

"Yes miss. Sorry miss." He said and let go of me and left. Amelie sighed and looked at me. She helped me get up and dusted off dirt.

"Wh-What are you doing here?" I asked internally cursing my shaky voice.

"I regretted keeping you so long and came to see if you got home okay. Quite lucky I did." Amelie said.

"Ummm... Thanks." I said.

"Your welcome. I will take you home." Amelie said.

"Um no you don't have to. Michael's house is literally just down there." I said, pointing down the street.

"I want to. I do not want you getting pounced on. Amelie said. "Come." She walked off and I sadly followed. Honestly I could walk to the house on my own. When we got to my house Amelie stopped. "Here we are."

"Yep." I said. "Bye." I said.

"Come to my office tommorow. I have a job for you." Amelie said. I nodded and she walked away. I walked up the drive and felt someone watching me. I turned and saw a light gray tail disappearing. I blinked and decided to see what it was. I rounded the corner from the house and I saw a ... Wolf? Trot down the street. I stared for a while and blinked and pinched myself but I wasn't dreaming or seeing things. The wolf started running and disappeared around the corner.

I stared at the the wolf had been then shook my head of the image and walked away.

Kayleigh's POV

After my idiot brother left me with this crazy man I decided I had to get away. While the crazy man is absorbed in his pet I sneaked out.

After I got outside I looked around for my brother. When it was obvious that I wouldn't be able to see him in this one spot I walked off down a street. I had no idea where I was going just walking and hoping to see or bump into Bryan.

I kept walking until what felt like ages arrived in a park like place with a big building.

"Who are you here for?" A man said. I looked at him.

"No-one. I'm just looking for someone." I said. The bodyguard took my bag annd looed through it. Then he closed it and gave it back to me.

"Coat." He said. I sighed and took it off and gave it to him. He searched the pockets and the inside pockets and stuff then gavd it back to me.

"Can I go through now?" I asked.

"Go through. But ths Founder is busy." The bodyguard said and I nodded and walked past him. I don't knw why Bryan would be here but I guessed it was worth a look.

Pushing open the door I was momentarily blinded by the bright white light inside compared to the dim light outside. I went to the reception desk.

"Yes?" The woman there said without looking up.

"Um I am here to uh... Um..." I did't know what to say "See the Founder." I said. The receptionist handed me a piece of paper on a clipboard and a pen.

"Put your name and the reason your reason you are here." She said. I siged and did what she said. When I got to why I was here I was a little stuck. In the end I decided to just "to speak". I gave her the clipboard back. "That is not a valid reason." She said.

"To speak about M... Mark? Meplin? Merlin?" I had forgotten what his name was. The receptionist looked at me.

"Myrnin?" She suggested.

"Yes! That's it!" I said. She looked back down and added to my sentence, "About Myrnin."

"Sit down." She said. I went to go and sit down by a man who had very pale skin. He looked a little... Creepy so I didn't speak to him.

"Kayleigh the Founder will speak to you." The receptionist said. I got up and went to the a door. "The next one." The receptionist said.

"Oh..." I went to the next door and it opened. I hesitantly walked in just as another pale skinned guy walked out.

"Come in Kayleigh." The Founder said. I walked the rest of the way and the door closed and when I looked there were guards there. So it wasn't an automatic door. That would have cool. "Why do you want to speak about Myrnin?" She asked.

"Um well could we live with someone else?" I asked.

"Why?" The Founder asked.

"Well because he has an arachnid which I am terrified off and he has only one bed." I said. The Founder stared at and I looked down. I find that unnerving.

"I will ask Oliver. And you shouldn't worry about Myrnin's pet. He doesn't let it out of it's cage... Much." She said picking up a sleek black phone. It looked like a smartphone which is cool. She pressed a button and the phone made a ringing sound.

"Yes?" A male voice said.

"Olivee. You do know about the siblings that came here after there parents passed away?" The Founder asked into the phone.

"Yes." the man said.

"Well Myrnin's accommodation is no longer suitable so they are going to be living with you. No arguments. Come here to fetch them." The Founder said and hung up. "Where is your brother?" She asked.

"Um I don't know. I was looking for him. He left after seeing M... Ma-"

"Myrnin's pet?" The Founder asked. I nodded. She sighed. and is quiet. A few minutes later the door opened and in walked the man I saw when me and Bryan first got here. He didn't look pleased with the arrangements.

"Why do I have to babysit kids?" He asked in a slightly strained voice. The Founder smiled a little.

"Because you are a natural with them, Oliver. You take care of Claire so well. And occasionally the housemates." She said. Oliver glared at her.

"Yes because I did otherwise you have my head." He said.

"True. Well here is one you will have to find the other." The Founder said.

"Why?" Oliver asked.

"Because the other one is missing. Surely you would understsnd that." The Founder said.

"Why don't you get your pets to find them?" He asked. The Founder thought. Then she said,

"You know what this girl's brother looks like don't you?" She asked the guards. One of them nodded. "Find him. And bring him here once you have." She said. They nodded then left the room.

"Take the girl to your accommodation." The Founder said. Oliver glared more then grabbed my arm hard and dragged me out. "And please don't bruise her. She is ever so delicate." The Founder said. Oliver stopped physically calmed himself down then released the tension on my arm a bit then walked out.
