Chapter 4
Pretty soon both Adam and Vanessa appeared in Italy.
"Ah Italy." She said
"It is nice." Adam agreed.
"It was your idea to come here so I hope it does not disappoint you."
"I don't think it will."
"Feeling any better?"
"Not really memory wise."
"Well, hopefully that will improve."
"Hopefully or we could just make new memories."
"Maybe both."
"Maybe."
"We'll see."
"Right, for now we need to find a place to stay."
"Yeah, I think there is a vacant Firestorm base here."
"That works."
"It's free." He reminded.
"True, let's go there then."
"Adam nodded and lead the way.
"What should I expect?" she asked.
"A smaller building, well maintained no one else will be there just us."
"Got it."
"Is that okay?" He asked
"Yes it is."
"I am just making sure."
"It sounds perfect, Adam."
He blushed a little and nodded
"As long as you think so," she said, moving closer to him.
"I do, of course I do I just want you happy." He said as she was now nose to nose with him
"I am happy."
Adam smiled, "That's good."
She leaned in closing the gap between their lips. Adam didn't hesitate to respond pulling her close.
"I love you, Adam," she whispered, between kisses.
It was those words that seemed to trigger the memories.
"I love you too, Vanessa." He said
"You mean it?"
"Of course I mean it." he said as they stood with their foreheads leaning together.
"A few things came back," he told her.
"Really?" she asked hopefully. "Like what?"
"My time with Firestorm, finding out about you for the first time." He said
"That's great." She smiled. It was progress at least.
"Yeah," He ssaid smiling
"Hopefully there's more where those came from."
"Hopefully."
"I think there will be."
"As long as I have you."
"Which you always will."
"Then I should be okay."
"Seems promising."
"Yes?"
"Yeah."
"You just like the idea of more kisses."
"Maybe." She laughed.
"I do too." He admitted.
"Then no problem."
"No we should get moving though."
"Right behind you."
He nodded and headed out. She just followed not know where it is. He lead her to a small black building
"This it?"
"Yeah, looks like a normal house right?"
"Yes it does."
"It's supposed to."
"Inconspicuous."
"Exactly, and an easy place to act from should we need to."
"Perfect."
"Glad you like it."
"Can we see inside?"
"Of course." Adam said opening the door and heading in. They stood in a large seemingly ordinary living room with a black leather couch and a large wall mounted television and a few laptops along one wall.
"More inconspicuties."
"Yes."
"I assume it changes or no?"
"It does when you turn off cloak mode."
"Then what?"
"Then it's a command center."
"Sweet."
"Yeah, so either way we are good."
"Hopefully we won't need it though."
"Exactly." Adam said.
"It would be our luck though."
"Would it?"
"Both of our track records speak many volumes on the issue."
"Maybe the world owes us that."
"I guess that's a possibility."
"I hope so."
"So do I."
"So, are we okay?"
"No, we're better than okay."
"Great then."
"Yes, great."
"So, rest for tonight then sights tomorrow?"
"Sounds good." She yawned.
Adam nodded and pointed upstairs.
"There are a few rooms there take your pick."
"Alright," she said, and blurred upstairs
Adam just smiled following with the bags. She had picked a room that was kind of a light silver and black with everything.
"I love it." She said
"Glad." Adam smiled from the doorway.
"Oh, Adam sorry you didn't have to carry those."
"It was fine." Adam shrugged.
"It was? Those should have been pretty heavy."
"Not really."
"Hmm...interesting." She said
"What?"
"It's just those should have been heavy for you."
"They didn't seem to be."
"Impressive."
"Are you sure they should be heavy?"
"Yeah, I am Buford helped me move them and he said so."
"Oh… wow," Adam realized, now just confused.
"Yeah, odd huh?"
"Very."
"Maybe you need the rest too."
"Maybe."
"So...are we sharing a room?" She asked blushing.
"If you want to."
"I mean If you don't mind." She said
"I don't."
She smiled happily
"Please then."
"Of course." He said
The next morning, Adam woke up to find Vanessa still asleep so he decided to go work out. He headed downstairs to the basement gym and started off on the punching bag. One punch set him for a different shock though.
He hit the bag as hard as he could and it burst apart. He starred at the bag for a while then his knuckles in complete shock.
"What just happened?" He muttered
He wasn't even sure how that was possible.
"Weird."
'Maybe I should ask Vanessa?' He thought.
He decided to wait until she woke. For now he stepped back from the bag and decided it was best to leave the gym.
He went upstairs to cook breakfast. He decided to try a hand some breakfast skewers since their in Italy. He gave it a try and it was working. It wasn't long until Vanessa came down.
"Smells great." She said
The she noticed something seemed a little off about him.
"Adam are you okay?"
"Um… there's something I should show you."
"Okay?" She asked
He took any of the skewers off and led her to the gym. There was still sand all over the ground.
"What happened?" Vanessa asked in surprise.
"I broke a punching bag."
"With one punch," he added.
"Really?" She asked.
"Yeah… really."
"Well, that is impressive."
"It seems impossible though."
"It's not, I think I may know what happened here."
"What?"
"Well, we had to use a bit of the shemical that was used on me to cure you."
"So… does this mean I have powers like you do?"
"Yes I think you are developing them."
"That's awesome!"
"It is?"
"Well, yeah!"
"It's going to take a lot of training to get used to."
"It is?"
"Yeah, it's a bit difficult at first."
"First off to prevent… well… that," she motioned around her.
"Oh, yeah I see your point."
"I can help you though."
"You can?"
"Yeah, after all, I've had these powers for years."
"That's true."
"Yeah, so I've gotten a lot of it figured out."
"Okay it means more time with you."
"Exactly."
"Alright, but after breakfast."
"Sounds good."
He smiled and lead the way back up.
"Wanna try to race?" Vanessa offered.
"Sure seems fun."
"Okay, go!"
They both ran towards the door.
Vanessa got to the kitchen first though. Adam had a hard time stopping, however Vanessa caught him in time.
"Stopping is hard." She said smiling
"Okay, I can see that now."
"You did try though right?"
"Of course."
"How hard was it?"
"It was difficult."
"So, what does that mean?" he asked.
"It means your still a rookie with powers."
"Well, that's pretty obvious."
"I know, but it'll get better with practice."
"I'm sure."
"We can start after breakfast if you want."
"Sounds like a plan."
"So, what did you make?"
"Some breakfast skewers. I heard they're pretty popular here."
"Interesting, tell me more."
"It's sweet Italian sausage, peppers, and pineapple threaded onto a skewer and fried."
"Sounds delicious."
"I hope so."
He slid one in front of her nervous
"You shouldn't worry Adam," she said, and took the skewer.
"I am though."
"I know you can cook."
"I know, but this was new."
"I still think there's no reason to worry."
"I always worry."
"I know."
"So just try it, please?"
She nodded and took a bite.
"It's good."
"Really?"
"Yeah really good."
"Good then." Adam smiled taking his own.
"Told you it would be."
"Alright, fair enough."
"So you'll take my word from now on?
"Maybe."
"Come on, don't make me force you."
"And how would ou do that?"
"I have my ways."
"I doubt it."
"Really?" She asked
"You can't."
She slid out of her chair and walked over and stood close to him.
"Want to bet me?"
"Always up for a bet."
"Okay, first off no kisses until you agree."
"You'd crack before I did."
"Is that so?" She asked lips inches from his own.
"Yes it is."
"We'll see I get first shower." She said backing away.
"Fine."
"Good." She said taking her skewer.
Soon they were both showered and ready.
"Ready for the leaning tower?"
Vanessa nodded excitedly.
"I have always wanted to see it."
"Let's go then."
"Normal speed?"
"Yeah like to see the trip."
"After you." He said
Vanessa smiled and headed out. Adam followed taking her hand.
"How have you been doing?" Vanessa asked him.
"Good for the most part trying not to use my powers."
"How about your memory?"
"Bit's and pieces." He said
"Well, it could have been way worse."
"Yeah, I remembered most of my life."
"Yeah, you could have ended up like Felicity."
"Who?"
"Another victim about your age but she literally doesn't remember anything from before her capture just assuming her name's Felicity since that's what he kept calling her. Firestorm's gonna try to find out who her parents are or were."
"I would like to help with that."
"Good she can use it."
"Seems so."
"I couldn't imagine it."
"I can't either."
"She had only just escaped when I killed him."
"How long was she there?"
"Since I escaped to Miami."
"That's a terribly long time."
"Extremely."
"She must have been angry."
"That's not even a worthy word."
"Furious?"
"She was mad that I killed him so she couldn't."
"Can't blame her for that."
"Yeah but just to give you a better idea."
"I get it."
"I just hope we'll be able to find her family."
"I do too she deserves it."
"Almost anyone does."
"Almost?" Adam asked
"My father for example."
"Right."
"Almost though."
"Yeah I imagine."
"Still, it's good you're not like her though."
"Yeah, it is would be nice to get my memories back though."
"We will."
"I hope so because these blank spots are not fun."
"I'd imagine not."
"Sorry, I am bringing down the mood."
"No, it's fine."
"I should stop though."
"Yeah, probably."
"Okay, sorry."
"I brought it up."
"Well still."
"Then it's my fault."
"Not necessarily."
"Yeah."
"We agree to disagree."
"Maybe."
"You could kiss me." He offered
"Nice try."
"I thought it might work."
"No, I remembered."
"Drat," He sighed
"Ready to give?"
"No, I won't cave."
"We'll see."
"Yes we will."
"Well, this just became nothing but a pride contest."
"A what?"
"The cost doesn't really matter. Just neither of us wants the shame of caving."
"Yeah, pretty much." He said
"Figures."
"You could just quit." He offered
"Never."
"Come on you know you want to kiss."
"You know you do."
"Of course I do, I can hold out though."
"So can I."
"No way."
"And why is that?"
"Because I can hold out longer."
"I don't think so."
"You think that I am that weak when it comes to you?" He asked smiling
"You think I am?"
"Okay, so we are both stubborn."
"I think I'm more though."
"What makes you so certain?"
"I would have died years ago if I wasn't stubborn."
"Oh right." Adam said gripping her hand tightly.
"It's the way things had to be."
"It shouldn't have been."
"No but there's nothing that can be done about that."
"I know."
"If it wasn't then I never would have met you."
"Yeah, that's true." He said smiling a little.
"Guess there's a plus side to everyone."
"And everything." He said hugging her briefly
"Sorry, that's what I meant."
"I know." He said
"That was a little funny though."
"Yeah, it was." He chuckled
"No harm there then."
"You are so amazing." He said.
"Thank you, Adam."
"I love you."
"I love you, too."
"Would be nice to kiss you." She smiled
"Then give."
"Not a chance." She said her lips actually brushing against his cheek
Adam slightly shuddered at that causing Vanessa to smirk.
"I told you I'm going to win." She whispered
"I bet you won't even last the day." Vanessa added.
"I..I can make it." He stammered
"Keep telling yourself that," she said, still just as close.
"I can." He said biting his lip.
"We'll see."
"You can back away a little." He said through clenched teeth.
"Why would I want to do that?"
"Your just doing this to torment me." He said
"Exactly." She smirked.
"Your not going to back away are you?" He asked
"You still haven't given me a reason."
"Because it's cheating." He said weakly as she settled her arms on his shoulders
"May the best cheater win."
Adam kept his eyes away from her, he was sure he'd cave if he took a good look at her. The deep smell of berries coming from her hair was making it hard enough.
"Can you even make the walk, Adam?"
"Of course I can." He said keeping his eyes off her and trying to ignore the continued feel of her lips on his cheek.
"You're not acting like you will."
"I will be fine." He said trying to keep his cool, but still refusing to look at her, which made her smirk.
"Doubt it."
"I just...I'll be okay." He said and then felt her hand on his other cheek while keeping her other arm on his shoulder
"Why don't you look at me?"
"I know how beautiful you look already." He said as she slowly began to turn his head
"That doesn't mean you can't enjoy it."
"I know, but I need to focus on the walk..." He said half heartedly
"Why?"
"We need to know where we're..." He trailed off as he was finally looking into her dark blue eyes.
"You were saying?"
"We have to know..." He said leaning towards her slightly
"Admit it," she said, placing her finger to his lips.
"Admit what?" He asked
"Did you really forget the point?"
"I well a little."
Vanessa just burst out laughing.
"Sorry, your just sort of really distracting." He said
"I just… wow."
"Sorry." He said again.
"Admit that you're a good cook and just trust me next time."
"Okay, I promise I will trust you next time."
"Admit you're a good cook."
"I am a decent cook."
"Up, up, up," she called shaking her head.
"What I agreed."
"Decent?"
"Yeah, decent."
"No, good. You're lucky I'm leaving it at that."
"Okay, I am a good cook." He said
"There we go." She smiled and kissed him.
She smiled into it when he immediately responded, wrapping his arms around her waist and keeping her close.
"I told… you… you couldn't… last the… walk."
You...were...right...maybe...I..am..weak..to you."
"Good… to know."
"Is that bad?" He asked when they separated panting
"Gives me leverage."
"For what?" He asked
"Later things."
"You already have plans don't you?"
"Maybe."
"Well as long as it's not evil." He said
"Of course not."
"You didn't play fair though."
"Where's the fun in that?"
"I would have lasted longer."
"Not enough."
"You just wanted to see what it would take."
"Yeah but it was fun."
"For yo maybe." He said
"Hey, that could have cracked me just as easily."
"No way you seemed so calm and in control."
"Because I'm strong."
"So I'm weak?"
"No, just less strong."
"That means the same thing." He sighed
"No, you're still strong."
"Says the girl who made me lose my self control." Adam said blushing
"Irrelevant."
"How so?" He asked
"It doesn't change that."
"You are my weakness." He said.
"Everyone has a weakness."
"Yeah and I suppose no one else gets near as much pleasure caving to their weakness."
"True that."
He smiled hugging her tight, "Thanks Vanessa you keep me level headed." He chuckled
"Glad to."
"Hope I do something for you."
"You do."
"Good, makes me think, maybe I am good enough for you."
"You are."
"You think so?"
"Definitely."
He kissed her cheek, "So guess we should keep going." He said
"Yes we should."
"Let's go then." He said keeping a hold of her as they walked.
As they got closer Vanessa had bad feelings.
"Adam, I feel like somethings wrong."
Adam looked around having the same feeling. "So do I."
"We'll just keep our eyes open."
"Good idea."
"We can still have fun."
"Of course."
He smiled and they arrived.
"It's smaller than I thought." Adam said
"Yeah, wow."
"I know right?"
"Still really cool though."
"Yeah wonder what keeps it up?"
"Seer will power."
"You think so?"
"Totally."
"Nah there has to be something else to it."
"Obviously, I just don't know what."
"Neither do I."
"Just a mystery."
"That's what makes it so good."
"Yeah."
"Gravity."
"Doesn't keep it up."
"How do you know?"
"Because Gravity pulls things down not keeps them up."
"It has to at least be a factor."
"How?"
"Gravity effects all of earth."
"Yeah of course."
"So it must effect this?"
"How could it work backwards though?"
"I don't know maybe something is pulling it up too?"
"Why question it?"
"Because that's what I do." Adam said smirking
"Fair enough."
"Yeah, besides you wonder too."
"Yeah."
"It's just an impressive bit of man and nature."
"I heard it wasn't actually supposed to be leaning. They just built it on unstable ground and that was the consequence."
"Interesting."
"Extremely."
"Idiotic on their part."
"Yeah but it worked out well."
"Yeah convenient."
"A happy accident."
"Not many of those."
"More than you'd think."
"That so?"
"Yeah."
"I don't see them often."
"You probably do just don't realize that's what they are."
"Maybe." He shrugged
"What about a microwave?"
"What about one?"
"It was a happy accident."
"No way, was that an accident."
"Wanna bet?"
"No I already lost one bet today."
"So?"
Why lose another, if I am wrong?"
"I don't know."
"Exactly."
"Fine then."
"Would you?"
"What?"
"Make the bet?"
"I offered it didn't I?"
"Does not mean you would."
"Then I'd be kind of screwed if you said yes."
"Huh?"
"I wouldn't have but you took me up on it."
"What?"
"I would have had to anyways if you took me up on it."
"I mean if I had asked you to bet."
"Probably."
Adam looked with a joking skeptical smirk on his face.
"Don't believe me?"
"I never said that."
"You implied it."
"Maybe."
"Now you're just being kind of annoying."
"Sorry I will stop."
"Exactly, just enjoy it."
"I am and I still feel I am being followed."
"So do I and that definately not good."
"Maybe we should get away from civilians?"
"Agreed."
They carefully moved away from the tower towards a deserted walkway. Not long after, they were proven right. Six men were following them.
They turned ready for a fight. The men stopped and stood.
"So the traitor daughter and her boyfriend." One man said
"All a matter of perspective," Vanessa said, "You guys got a death wish?"
"Oh, what are you two going to kill us?"
We will if we have to."
"I doubt you could."
"Try us." Vanessa smirked.
The men glared and charged in. Adam immediately swung his leg up connecting hard with the side of one of the men's head. His newly increased strength resulted in a sickening CRACK!
Meanwhile Vanessa avoided a punch and clammed her fist into another mans gut. She felt something, though unsure what, burst.
Both men fell over instantly. The other four were still somehow feeling bold though.
"Idiots." Adam muttered headbutting the nearest man
It had no effect really on Adam but the was another loud crack. Adam wiped the other mans blood off his face. Vanessa meanwhile drove her knee right into another man's ribcage crushing his whole ribcage. "Practically eggshells."
"So you two want to live and walk away?" Adam asked
The remaining to wide-eyed men turn and ran.
"Smart men."
"Finally at least."
"That was interesting." Adam said
"Now, what do we do with the bodies?"
"Find a cliff to throw them off."
"Okay, each take two?"
"Deal."
She picked up the two she killed. Adam picked up the other two and they set out. It wasn't too long until they found one. Adam used his new strength and tossed them off the cliff.
"That's that then."
"Easy but odd." Adam said
"A bit." Vanessa shrugged.
"I'm not used to the powers."
"Right, yeah, it odd for a while but you get used to it real quick."
"Are you sure?"
"Certain."
"I hope so."
"It will."
"Okay, I trust you."
"Good, you should."
"I have learned that."
"That's good then."
"Yeah, good to have you."
"Good because I'm not going anywhere."
"I hope not, I really don't want to lose you again."
"Yeah, sorry about that."
"It's okay you told me why you did it."
"Well, it wont happen again."
"Good to know."
"Yeah."
"So, back to enjoying our trip then?" He asked offering his hand.
Vanessa just smiled and took it as they set off again.
