The Lightning thief: Chapter 2

TSUKI

That night I dreamed. It didn't really make any sense though.

The dream started in a wasteland. It was completely barren. There was no life, no sound and no smell. Save for people, but they weren't normal, they were made out of various elements. I could see people made of fire, of lightning, of wind, of water and people of earth.

For what seemed like hours all the people did was walk around until the earth split open and all the people were pulled in. From the cracks grew a massive tree. And everything faded away as I woke up.

It was completely dark, but I could see just fine. From outside I could hear the sound running rain and the roaring thunder. There was another sound though; I couldn't make out what it was, it sounded like shouting but what followed was very easy to understand: the start of a car engine. I got up to look out of the window and was almost blinded as lightning struck right a meter ahead of me. "That was too close. I better get out of here" I thought to myself.

I was drenched within seconds of stepping outside. I could see tire tracks and decided that I might as well try to catch up. So I ran after it. A minute later my whole body screamed at me, 'DANGER'. I jumped to the side and lightning struck where I had stood less than a second ago.

I got back to my feet and I could hear growling in the distance, getting closer. Adrenaline Pumping, I kept on running. It wasn't fast enough. The growling was getting closer, louder and more frequent. There was also a pounding sound in the distance, also getting closer. I picked up the smell of ozone and immediately skipped to the side, just in time to avoid another lightning strike

The growling was close now, very close. I threw myself at the ground and saw a hulking mass of black fly passed me. I could feel my bones aching and my legs shaking as I got back on my feet. The black, thing, turned to me again; ready to pounce on me.

The moon rose from behind the cloud for a moment and everything slowed down. All I heard was my heart beating at a regular pace. All I could smell was the beast in front of me that took the form of a dog. All I could feel was the energy running through my body…

…But I could see everything. Every drop of rain, as it drifted towards the ground. I could see Percy, Sally and Grover running towards a hill with a tree: and I could see every muscle on the beast tense, as it leaped towards me.

I reached into a side pocket in my bag and pulled out an odd-looking black knife with a ring on the end. I ducked under the approaching beast, cutting it as it passed and threw the knife where it landed. The hound burst into a shower of golden dust.

The clouds enveloped the moon and I fell to my knees and dropped my backpack. The energy I had before left me and I was stuck staring into the clouds as the lightning gathered. I could see the lightning coming down on me, inching closer. My arms were numb and my legs dead. There was no way I'd be able to avoid it. The last thing I felt was something huge grab me then everything flashed away in a shimmering golden light.

In a forest near New York in a tent, a sleeping blond woke up and pulled a slip of paper out of his pocket with a seal that was glowing and steaming. His eyes shot wide open; he closed his eyes and went through a series of one-handed seals before pointing the last sign at the sheet. A puff of smoke and he was gone.

He arrived in the middle of a thunder-storm looking around frantically for something but all he found was a backpack and a kunai stuck in the ground next to it. "She's gone…you failed."

He crushed the thought and made a hand sign crossing his fingers then smoke enveloped everything within a kilometre.

"Where am I? The last thing I remembered was, oh…" my eyes widened as I recalled what was about to happen "am I dead?" I looked myself over "I'm breathing that's good. No missing body parts either…" I thought about it for a moment before shouting "I'm alive!"

I heard a deep voice say "well that must be the first time I've heard that in here." I turned and saw a 3 meter tall man with pale skin and black hair that reached his shoulders.

"Hi, I'm Tsuki, what's your name!" He looked surprised at the question before he took on a smug smirk.

"I am Hades, Lord of the underworld."

"Nice to meet you Hades, where you named after the Greek Hades?" He was about to reply but didn't stop "I was going to learn about him this year but I never got to, he sounded really interesting. All I can guess is that it must be boring in the, underworld…" My face flashed with realisation.

He rubbed his temples, irritated and asked "what was your name again?"

I flashed a grin and said "Tsuki!"

Everything fell into darkness and his eyes glowed with divine fury then he stood and started roaring "That useless horned fool! I ordered him to bring me Sally Jackson but all he manages is this." He gestured at me "My finances are stretched thin as it is. I am definitely cutting his payment. I've already had to open up countless subdivisions" He moaned "then I've had to hire more security and they are not cheap. Then Charon discovered Italian suits, he's been impossible since. I will not be paying for incomplete tasks."

He then looked over at me and asked "Why do you not tremble before me?"

I replied with genuine curiosity "why should I?"

He walked up to me standing at his full height looking down on me "I am a god, the lord of the underworld. I command an endless army of dead. "

I just tilted my head to the side in a similar fashion as a dog "But you have no reason to hurt me?"

"I have set up the punishments of countless souls."

"There were many bad guys in history that did horrible things."

He sent me a hard look. "Your soul may be amongst them when your time comes."

"Isn't that just another reason for me to get on your good side? If I'm good enough I might get into heaven, yeah!"

The light returned as he sat down. He sighed and said exasperated "it is Elysium kid. You seriously don't know anything about us at all?"

"Nope"

A golden flash appeared in his hand which drew his attention before vanishing "I must apologize for bringing you here-"

"Apologize!" I interrupted "you saved my life from that weird lightning"

"Lightning you say?" he seemed to get agitated by this.

"Yeah there was this huge storm and all the lightning was striking at me."

"I have also had some bad experience with lightning" he said with disgust laced into his tone. "I'm sorry but I can't just let you leave. Coming here is usually a one way trip."

"What about that one guy, I don't remember his name though. I think he played the harp."

He replied "you're thinking about Orpheus. Yes, I did let him leave but his skill with the harp had no match. When he passed through here he was able to calm things down for a while; made my job undeniably easier."

I sat down and struck a thinking pose. "Greeks… what would a Greek do…" Then my face lit up with the metaphorical light bulb. I stood up and my posture held a confidence that had been held only by one other in the past "I'll do a quest for you. Then you will have to let me go to do it."

He stared at me blankly for a moment and burst into a laughter fit only for a god. "I find your proposal amusing: Amusing enough for me to consider It." he paused for a moment to regain his composure. "I think I have something for you."

"Yes!" I cheered "But I won't go around killing people."

He waved his hand dismissively "Oh no, nothing like that." He clicked his fingers and a card appeared in my hand. There were two addresses, a place called camp half-blood and a place called the locus hotel. He continued saying "What I want you to do is pick up a couple of people from that hotel and bring them to the camp, unless I say otherwise later. Is that understood?"

I reacquired my standard grin and said "Yes sir, I promise I won't let you down. An Uzumaki never backs down from their promise" I gave him a thumbs-up "now when do I start?"

"I need you to swear it on the river Styx, then you can go."

"I swear it on the river Styx." Rumbling could be heard in the distance.

I turned to leave and when I reached the door he said "Neither I nor any of my guards will stop you from leaving, but no one, except my own children, has been able to leave here without some godly intervention, but If you find a way out yourself I may even consider providing some minor assistance."

I looked everywhere for some sort of exit and found nothing. I wasn't as disappointed as I expected to be, being dead would be pointless if it was easy to come back. Then I saw a boat come down the river "of course, Charon ferries people to the underworld down the river. So the river is the exit." I realised.

I considered my options:

Pull a Hercules and pay of Charon. "Impossible I don't have any money."

Sneak onto the boat. "Too small and the only one on the boat when it leaves is Charon. I would definitely get noticed."

Swim. I looked at the water "Nope"

None of the options led to me being able to get out. So I was stuck there. "Well there is one more option…" I hadn't at all considered what this Greek god revelation meant or where I fit in. The gods are real; the myths are true, the heroes and the monsters. What was real and what was a lie? All those times I dreamt I stood in the clearing, learnt to fight with a weapon, walked on the trees and on the water.

"Maybe I can just, walk out."

I stalked to the edge and tried to recall how I managed it in my dreams…

"Find the energy…" I searched inside myself and found it or felt it rather; flowing throughout my body.

"Control it…" I tried to move it and it responded, resonating with my thoughts and will.

"Now just focus it at the base of my feet…" I moved my energy to my feet. "Not too much and not too little"

I snapped my eyes open and took a step out onto the river.

ARTEMIS

In the passing twelve years I'd seen more visions, they were just flashes: walking through a parting crowd on a dirt street as they either glared with brimstone eyes or ignored me completely, being rejected by gangs of kids for no reason and just sitting against the wall in an apartment with tears raining down; such things.

Throughout the twelve years I still had not heard the name of the form I was viewing, all I heard was "Fox-brat", "Demon" and things like that. From what I could tell these visions are not like the visions we give our demigods, too little symbolism, but then again I may be missing something. I strongly suspect that Naruto is the cause of this, if it weren't for those damnable ancient laws.

There was one thing which had me the most worried about these visions; I was seeing them from the eyes of a child…
