Disclaimer: I don't own Death Note.

A/N: Augh! My computer died and is now being revived in the shop. I feel like a part of me is missing. I had to start over on this chapter and write it in the library. Oh, the things I do for you people I don't even know.

Chapter Four: Matt and Light's Night Together

"Uh…" Matt said, wide-eyed.

"I mean, I just don't want to be alone. My apartment feels empty without L." Light elaborated. Matt could appreciate the sentiment, even though Mello had only been gone for half a day. Still, he couldn't possibly let Light stay in their apartment, Mello would have a fit.

But on the other hand, didn't it just serve Mello right? After all, the blonde was staying in a hotel room with Near. And what was there to do in a hotel room besides have sex? Well, they could watch TV, but that thought really didn't cross Matt's one-track mind.

"Well?" Light asked impatiently, but with a good amount of sadness. Matt felt sorry for him. How could he possibly deny such a pathetic and desperate request? Nevertheless, he would have to, he decided. He would not risk his relationship with Mello just to cheer Light up. It was simply out of the question. He opened his mouth to tell him so.

"Yeah, okay." Matt said. Wait, that wasn't right. Fuck. Light smiled and got into the passenger seat of Matt's car.

"What about your car?" Matt asked.

"Oh, don't worry about it. I can come get it later." Light said nonchalantly. Matt thought this was really weird, but he didn't comment for some reason.

They drove back to Matt's place in silence, but it wasn't an uncomfortable one. People are always quieter when they're driving at night. Light just stared out the window sadly the entire time, and it made Matt feel rather depressed as well.

When they got to the apartment, Matt felt really weird letting Light into his home willingly. He remembered that the last time Light had been there, it had been for the purpose of finding some dirt on Matt to report to Mr. Wammy. While it seemed that Light had changed, Matt was still wary.

The apartment was a terrible mess right then, presumably from Mello's hurried packing that morning. There were black clothes strewn about on the floor and the couch, and a few dresses lying on the counter, apparently not having been deemed pretty enough to go on a trip with Near in. Matt shook his head.

That was not a good thought, nor was it fair to Mello. Mello would not cheat on him, he just wouldn't. Matt's faith in Mello had been rapidly flipping back and forth all night, and at the moment, he was certain of Mello's fidelity. Which was why he was worried about Light staying there.

What would it look like if Mello were to find out? While Matt was lost in thought, Light was standing by the doorway and looking around, waiting for Matt to say something.

"Uh…where should I sleep?" Light finally asked. Matt jumped slightly, having almost forgotten about his guest.

"Oh, you can sleep in my room." Matt said, pointing to the room. Light raised his eyebrows in surprise.

"Uh…" Light responded. Matt could have hit himself.

"I mean, you can sleep in there and I'll sleep in Mello's room!" He hurriedly amended. Light laughed.

"Oh good, for a moment I thought we'd had a misunderstanding." Light said, smirking his old nemesis smirk, which Matt hadn't missed at all, thanks. Matt laughed half-heartedly. God, this was awkward. What did he say now?

"Yeah, sorry…I didn't think about how that sounded."

"That's okay, no harm done. Though I wonder why you don't want me to stay in Mello's room so you can stay in your own room." Light said.

"Well, that's the thing…I'd prefer if Mello didn't find out you were staying here. I mean, I told you how suspicious he already is. I'm just afraid of him finding any evidence that you've been in his bed." Matt said.

"Yeah, I can see how that would be bad." Light agreed. In actuality, Matt had another reason for the arrangement, which was that he missed Mello and was hoping that his bed would carry some lingering sign of his presence. He was not about to explain this sappy reasoning to Light, though. They were men, damn it!

"Well, I'm going to bed, then." Matt said eventually.

"Okay." Light replied, going into Matt's room and shutting the door. Matt went into Mello's room and sat on the bed to take off his shoes. Then he realized he didn't keep any pajamas in Mello's room. Oh well, he could just sleep in his boxers.

As he stripped down, the horrible thought occurred to him that Light hadn't brought any pajamas either, and was likely doing the same thing. In Matt's bed. Well, Matt was going to have to wash the sheets anyway, just to eliminate stray hairs and the like, which Mello could theoretically find.

But when he thought of that, he realized that he wasn't afraid of Light dirtying his sheets. That wasn't the reason the mental image of Light undressed bothered him. Well, perhaps Light would simply borrow some of Matt's pajamas.

The thought comforted him for a moment before he realized that it would entail Light wearing his pajamas, which was almost as bad. But there was nothing he could do about it at this point, so he drifted off into a fitful sleep.

The next morning, he forgot Light was there and walked blearily into the kitchen for coffee in his boxers, only to see Light sitting there, fully dressed and reading the newspaper.

The other man looked Matt up and down and smirked before turning back to his paper. Matt's cheeks turned red, but he refused to be intimidated in his own home, especially by someone as pathetic as Light.

So instead of running back to his room, he simply went about his morning routine as if Satan wasn't there. It was surprisingly easy, as Light was pretty quiet all morning. The only problem was when Light kept insisting they leave before Matt was ready.

"If you normally leave this early, then why are you always late to work?" Matt asked irritably, pulling on his shirt as he walked back into the living room.

"Sometimes I get sidetracked on the way. Especially when I'm with L." Light replied. Matt did not want to think about the ways in which Light may have been sidetracked by L, but, as usual, he had very little control over his own thoughts. He ignored his brain as they drove to work. When they got there, Light went on ahead while Matt parked the car.

A few minutes later, as he crossed the parking lot, he was accosted by L, who had been hiding behind a car near the entrance.

Matt was rather surprised that L wasn't already inside, but he was even more surprised when L grabbed his arm and lightly shoved him against a parked car. L's eyes were a little wild.

"What did you do with Light last night?" L asked in an urgent and worried tone.

A/N: This is a little short, but that's because I have to turn the laptop back in to the library in five minutes or I'll get fined twenty-five dollars :(

Review the chapter! Or else...I will be sad.
