Chapter Four

One, Two, Three, Jump

Mr. Gold, Snow, Emma, Damon, and Bonnie all stood in the back room of Mr. Gold's shop. On the ground was a large top-hat that had supposedly belonged to the Mad-Hatter. The entire story still seemed completely far fetched but Bonnie knew that she could not turn her back on them now. Not if there was a chance that her friends were in danger.

Damon was standing beside the young witch with an amused look on his face. He had no idea what was going on, but he knew that they couldn't physically leave the town any other way, so maybe they could get home through the hat. 'Who am I kidding...? This is crazy.'

His lips twisted up into a smirk and he lent down toward Bonnie, whispering against her ear playfully, "I don't think we're gonna fit."

She felt her face grow hot as his breath rushed against her ear and the skin of her neck. No matter how much she hated Damon she could never deny that he was very attractive and alluring. And as his words registered she laughed a little. The hat was literally small enough to fit on her head, she didn't understand how they were supposed to jump into it. "I don't think so either."

"Oh, I wouldn't worry your pretty little heads about that, dearies." Mr. Gold said with a wide grin as he lifted his hands excitedly and cocked his head to the side. "If you open your minds you will find that all things are possible." He paused and glanced over at Bonnie who was still staring at the hat hesitantly. She felt his eyes on her and looked up to meet them. "Especially when you have magic."

A chill shot down her spine as he said the words. She wondered what he had seen of her future. His eyes held too much knowledge behind them. It terrified her. No one man should have that much insight.

Mr. Gold handed Bonnie a piece of paper and she read it over. The words were not in English, so she didn't know what it said.

"This spell is actually quite simple!" The shopkeeper stated, his voice rising as he spoke. "All you have to do is read the spell that I just handed you, and then the hat will start to spin, and that is when you jump in!" He sang the last words. "Understood?"

"Yeah." She said, looking back down at the spell in her hand. When she started to recite the words, Mr. Gold interrupted her.

"Sorry to interrupt dear, but if you are wanting to go together then I suggest you hold hands. The ride can be a bit bumpy!" He laughed madly. "Wouldn't want the two of you to be separated again, would we?"

'We have to hold hands? Ughh...' Bonnie shot Damon a disgusted look and he smirked at her, holding out his hand and non-verbally telling her that he was okay with the idea. This only caused her look of disgust to intensify and she turned back to Mr. Gold and asked, "Can't we both just jump in at the same time?"

"You could." He nodded his head. "But, the chances of you both ending up in the same place are very unlikely."

"Come on, judgy." He smirked and waggled the fingers of his hand telling her to take it. "Don't worry, I don't bite."

She could practically hear the sarcasm drenching his words and it irritated her to no end. He did bite, and kill, many innocent people. Hell he had bit her before! He was pretty much making a joke about how terrible of a person he was. She looked up at him and then cast her green eyes down at his hand. Bonnie couldn't believe that she was actually considering holding his hand. The weirdest part was the way that her body was reacting to the thought. Her heart was racing and her stomach was flipping anxiously.

'Pull yourself together girl... This isn't a first date with a hot guy, this is Damon Salvatore. Your body shouldn't be reacting this way to him.'

Bonnie caught his captivating blue eyes with her own and she was reminded just how much she hated him as he waggled his brow at her. He was always so cocky. She hated how proud he was of being evil.

"We don't have all day, Bonnie. The fate of the world is waiting." Damon reminded.

Sighing loudly, she gave in and she linked her fingers with his, holding onto his hand tightly. If she had to hold his hand she was going to make sure that they didn't get separated. 'His hands feel really nice... Wait! What?! You cannot be thinking these things. Even if he wasn't an evil asshole, your best friend is interested in him.'

Damon refocused his attention on the hat, but he too was noticing just how nice Bonnie's hand felt in his own. Her hands were so small and delicate, but she wasn't. She was such a strong girl. Stronger than Elena, and probably stronger than Caroline too. She was the only one who had ever really stood up to him and called him out on his behavior, and she could stand up for herself. Still, how soft and delicate her hand felt in his reminded him of just how fragile she really was.

He felt the need to protect her. He had always felt the need to protect her. And honestly, even if his objective had been to get back to Elena and Mystic Falls before, it wasn't anymore. Now his objective was to help Bonnie Bennett and make sure she was safe.

Bonnie started to recite the spell and the top-hat began spinning and glowing brightly. Any thoughts about their story being false were quickly diminishing as they watched a giant vortex hover over the hat. They both exchanged confused looks and then Damon lifted his free hand and started to count on his fingers, one, two, three. When he lifted the third finger the two of them jumped into the vortex holding onto each other's hand and praying that they wouldn't be separated.

Everything went dark like it had the night of the decade dance.

"This place has got to have a bleeding exit!" Rebekah shouted angrily as they walked through yet another hallway. They had been walking through the maze of doors for what seemed like hours. And still, they had not found the way out. She was not a very patient individual and she was starting to lose control and feel trapped. She hated feeling trapped.

To top it all off, there was some kind of evil ghoul that was trying her damnedest to kill Caroline.

She had fought with the girl on many occasions, and she had considered her a rival, but she never wanted her to die. She knew that vampires couldn't easily be killed, but Caroline was not immortal like herself. 'Plus I don't really know if ghost rules apply to us... In my thousand years of living I've never seen anything like this.'

When the other blonde had not responded to her, she furrowed her brow in confusion and turned to look for her. "Caroline?"

Rebekah watched her closely as she stared into one of the many mirrors on the wall. Up until now she had been avoiding looking directly into any of the mirrors, but now her eyes were fixated on it. Inside of the mirror was a young girl who was dressed in all black, her face was close to the mirror and her eyes were gouged out and blood was rolling down her cheeks. "Caroline..." She muttered again, under her breath as she walked toward her and placed her hands on her shoulders attempting to shake her out of her trance. "Snap out of it!"

She watched Caroline's reflection in the mirror and she noticed that a few tears of blood were starting to roll out of her eyes and down her cheeks. She appeared to be in complete and utter pain as she let out soft whimpers.

The original vampire tried her hardest to pull the other girl away from the mirror, but even with her vampire strength she couldn't seem to budge her. 'What the bloody hell!?' "Come on! You need to move! You can't just stand here and die!" Her concern was evident in her voice and worried eyes as she tried everything to get her to move away from the mirror.

"How are we s'posed to find the mirror in a place like this?"

Rebekah's ears perked up as she heard someone speaking in another room. She didn't know how far away they were, but she was very grateful for her super-hearing abilities right about now. She only hoped that if she screamed loud enough they would come and help her. "Hello! Is anyone out there!? We could really use your help! Hello! Please! Help! She's dying!"

She could hear footsteps down the hall and doors opening and closing and she knew that there were two people and they were trying to find her. She called out again, "Please! Hurry!"

Suddenly, two men turned the corner to the hallway that they were standing in. One of them had short hair and the other long, and they quickly moved toward the mirror.

"That's got ta be the mirror right?" The short haired one asked.

"Only one way to find out." He said with a grin, lifting up one of the vases off of the table in the hallway and throwing it at the mirror. The glass shattered and Rebekah watched with wide eyes as the ghost inside of it disappeared. She internally berated herself for not thinking to do that sooner.

Caroline was pulled out of her trance and she almost fell to the ground, but Rebekah caught her by the shoulders and kept her standing up. Turning her around she wiped the blood from her eyes and cheeks and offered her a small and genuine smile. The other girl looked like she was terrified and about to burst out in tears at any minute. "There, there." She said, running her fingers through blonde curls. "You are safe and sound now, love."

A blush covered the younger vampires cheeks and she forced herself not to start crying. She didn't want to show how weak she was in front of Rebekah or the two men who had just saved her. She just really didn't like ghosts. In fact, scary movies were always her least favorite. They made her sick. Bonnie and Elena often teased her about it because she was a vampire and the sight of blood grossed her out, but she didn't care. She didn't like it.

"Thank you." She wasn't too competitive to thank someone for saving her life. Even if she hated her.

Rebekah's full lips twisted up into a smile and she gently tucked a blonde curl behind Caroline's ear, watching as the other girl shivered beneath her fingers. 'It is so blatantly obvious that she fancies me... When will she realize it?' "I'm not the one you should be thanking, sweets." She nodded her head in the direction of the two men.

Caroline turned around and smiled at the two men who were standing behind her. She took the opportunity to really look them over. The one with short hair was wearing a leather jacket and a black t-shirt with jeans. He was very handsome she noted. Then the other looked to be younger, but was much taller with a cute puppy dog smile. His dimples were absolutely adorable. He was wearing a flannel shirt and some jeans as well. They both were carrying guns and they looked prepared for the situation, which made her wonder how they knew what was going on.

"Thank you guys so much for everything!" She thanked them. "I'm Caroline, and this is Rebekah." She introduced the blonde Brit. "Who are you guys?"

"I'm Dean and this is my little brother Sammy." The short haired one smiled charmingly at her and his brother rolled his eyes at him.

"Sam." He corrected.

"Nice to meet you, Dean." Caroline almost felt like she was compelled by his smile and stunning eyes, but she knew that she had a boyfriend back home and she wasn't one to cheat. Still, she could look.

Rebekah watched the interaction between the two and pursed her lips angrily. She couldn't believe that he was flirting with her after everything that had just happened. "Enough with the introductions." She stated. "I don't know about you, Caroline, but I'd love nothing more then to be out of this creepy mansion."

Dean glanced up at her and his eyes flashed black. It was only for a second, but she swore that she had witnessed them change color. The original vampire furrowed her brow and stared at him as he told Caroline that they would lead the way out, and to follow them. 'That was super creepy... I don't know if we should trust these two after all... What is this place? It feels like a nightmare.'

Damon and Bonnie wound up standing in a room surrounded by hundreds of doors. They both looked around at the doors feeling overwhelmed by the options. Neither of them had been expecting the hat to really take them to other worlds, let alone that there would be so many other worlds to go to.

"Whoa." Bonnie breathed out as she looked around. "This is overwhelming."

She looked up at him and noticed that he was wearing that sly smile that he wore when he knew something that she didn't. She shook her head and knit her brows together. "What?"

He shot a look down at their hands and she quickly realized what he was smirking so proudly about. She glanced down and noticed that she was still holding onto his hand and then she pulled her hand away like she had been burnt. Damon laughed a little at her discomfort and Bonnie tried her hardest not to think about why she had still been holding his hand. When they got there she should have immediately let it go, but it had felt so right holding onto hers that she hadn't even thought about it.

'What is wrong with me lately? Damon holding my hand shouldn't feel right... It should feel wrong. After everything he's done and what is going on between him and Elena it is wrong...'

"Be serious, Damon." She started to scan the doors. They all looked exactly the same and she didn't know how she was supposed to make a choice. "I don't know which one we should pick"

"Do you want my help?"

The way that he asked the question made her doubt that she really wanted his help. He sounded like he was joking and he could never take anything seriously. "Yeah, I'd really appreciate your help." She admitted. Bonnie didn't want to be the one to make the choice.

Damon grinned deviously and lifted his finger, pointing at one of the doors. "Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe." He started, moving from one door to the other. Bonnie crossed her arms over her chest and glared up at him. Her look said 'Seriously?' "Catch a tiger by his toe." Blue eyes connected with green and his grin stretched even more so across his face. "This could take a while."

She groaned out in annoyance and she started to go across the room. She decided that they would just go into the first door in front of them. They would have to go to all of them eventually and there was no way that she was waiting for him to finish counting through the doors. "Come on, we'll just go through this one."

He raised his hands defensively. "Jeeze. I was just trying to help."

Bonnie ignored him as she walked toward the door that she had chosen and she stood in front of it. She didn't really know how this worked. No one had told her. Mr. Gold had just told her that she would use her purity to open it. Tugging her bottom lip between her teeth she reached out for the handle of the door. She could feel the heat of Damon's body behind her and she ignored the way him standing close to her made her feel.

The moment that her fingers touched the door it started to glow and she was able to pull it open.

Both of them exchanged another confused look as they stared inside of the door. They couldn't tell what kind of world was on the other side because all that they could see was darkness.

"This doesn't look promising." Bonnie said, turning to look back at the door.

Before she could step inside, she felt something against her hand and then realized that Damon's fingers were interlocked with hers again. Her eyes widened and she hastily looked down at their hands then up at him. "What are you doing?"

"Better safe than sorry, right?"

"Right..." She whispered, her voice cracking when his thumb ran along the side of her hand. Bonnie figured that the touch had been unintentional but it still caused her heart to jump. Returning her attention to the door she took in a breath and focused on what they had to do. This time she lifted her free hand and counted on her fingers, one, two, three.

They jumped into the darkness.
