Chapter four! Enjoy;)
"Aim higher!" Parker yells from down the court. I laugh and toss the basketball towards the net. With a bang it hits the side of the rim.
"You're possibly the worst basketball player on the planet," he laughs and pulls me into a hug from behind. I struggle to get out of his grasp playfully and try to push him over.
"You said to aim higher so I did!" I remark stubbornly. We're in the middle of CreekStone Park, which is covered in leaves ranging from red, yellow, and green shades of fall. Those were the seasons I had come to love most in Montana. Parker smile is abosolutly contagious and I can't help but laugh. I brush back the hair on his forhead that covers his scar he just from a cliff diving accident in the sixth grade. He's wearing faded old jeans and a green t shirt that fit a bit too tight around his arms. I loved that shirt. I'm wearing a blue patterned sweater and my blonde hair hangs down in waves. It still has a few highlights from the summer I spent in Arizona.
"We'll you might not be the best shot, but you're certainly the most beautiful girl I've ever met." Grinning, his arms wrap around my waist and suddenly it's just us, no one else. I have to stand on my toes to reach him, but I do and it's magic. Right as our lips touch, I feel a searing pain in my back and shoulders. I turn quickly to see where I had been stabbed but as I do the scene just fades away with every second. I try to grab onto Parker, but he's long gone. In fact, he was never even there.
"Aaahhh!" I scream as I writhe in pain. I'm still shaking off my dream as Max and Nudge come running down the stairs, shortly followed by Fang, Iggy, and Dylan. They are all wearing the new clothes I had provided them with for sleeping, although Fang didn't feel the need to be wearing a shirt...
"What's going on?" Max demands.
"My back!" I gasp in between gulping breaths. "It feels like I've been stabbed!"
"Let me see," Nudge pushes through everyone. The guys have the decency to leave the room as I lift up the back of my shirt.
"Oh my God!" Nudge exclaims. Max rushes next to me and gasps.
"Skylar... No..." Is all Max could say.
"What?" I scream at them. When my only response is silence, I plead with tears starting to roll down my cheeks. "What is happening to me?" I whisper. All they can do is look down. I rush to the bathroom mirror and almost scream in horror.
Along my shoulders where Uncle M had hit me with that oozing dart, was two feathered appendages protruding out of my back.
"What is this?" I call out to the others for some kind of answer. Even a lie would be fine for now.
"I think I know," a small voice pipes up from a bedroom door. Angel shuffles out in her nightgown with a mess of bed head.
"Go back to bed, sweetie," Max whispers.
"That's what they were doing," Angels says ignoring Max. "At the School- Where your Uncle worked. They were trying to figure out how to altar human DNA into hybrid species, but in a way grown ups could change. Instead of being born that way."
"That's disgusting!" I yell, turning towards Max. "Make it go away!"
"I can't just do that-" she sighs.
"I don't care!" I scream. "I'm not one of you!" I break down on the floor in a heap. The girls come around and try to comfort me, which they are obviously not used to. I get up and sprint to the kitchen with Max to find some painkillers before I throw up. While I search some cabinets frantically I notice Fang has suddenly appeared next to Max. They begin to whisper to each other, thinking I can't hear them.
"So like... Is it like, cramps?" He says, turning a little red at the embarrassing question.
"What? No! Try genetic mutation!" She whisper screams at him. She explains my situation as quickly as possible as I try to keep calm.
"How long until they're fully grown?"I ask.
"At this rate, probably two or three days," Max replies grimly. I'm fed up with all the weird looks and tight lips, so I go out for a walk. As I go through a old hiking trail that leads to an ancient looking well I hear a ruffle in the bushes I jump out into their hiding place, ready to strike, but am greeted with wide, innocent blue eyes.
"Angel?" I whisper. "What are you doing here?" She clutches her winged Teddy Bear tightly to her chest and looks up.
"I know," she replies.
"Know what?" I say, confused.
"Parker. I know about him," she blinks slowly and I feel an unnatural presence in my brain.
'I know who he was. I know he's not the same person, not anymore.'
'How?'I think in reply.
'I can access people's emotions and memories. I know you have lost alot, but you can't tell him.'
'Why not!? Do you know what I have been through! Do you know what it's like to have someone you love die and then have it shoved back in your face?!'
'He can't know,' there's a pause. 'He only knows his new world now and if you break that, you'll break him."
It's all too much too take. I turn and run back into the woods, tearing welling up in my eyes.
'Youll see. He can never know...'
