Chapter 4 Breaking Point
The sloshing of water awoke me as it splashed against the side of the great ship spitting at the porthole. I slowly opened my eyes squinting against the morning light illuminating our room. I felt Kyle's steady breathing his arm lazily hanging over my bare back I slid his arm off me and placed it gently on the bed trying not to wake him. I hopped out of bed to get some clothes on and got changed before leaving Kyle a note.
Dear Kyle
Just going to have lunch meet you up there soon, if you ever wake up sleepy head
Alice x
I hadn't realised how late it was it was about two in the afternoon and my stomach started to whine for food so I strolled down to lunch room on the first floor. One of waiters recognised me he was called Dean and always gave me and Kyle extra bits of food here and there because we... well Kyle tipped him.
"Good afternoon Alice, late night?" he grinned walking with me into the room
"You could say that" I replied smiling he laughed seating me and already knowing what I would order was writing it down on his notepad.
"I'm just warning you, but Tom is out to get you and Kyle. Last night was such a disaster for him now all his mistresses are in tantrum and leaving him left right and centre" he chuckled giving the order to a passing waiter muttering something under his breath.
" He can't really do anything though" I sighed straightening out my dark blue dress floating just above my knee.
"Oh but he can. Half the people on this boat will do as he says because they are so scared of him. So just watch yourself yeah? Cause it's you in particular he wants revenge on" Dean said on a serious note.
"Yeah I will thanks Dean" I said
"No problem miss I'll see you later" he nodded his head before rushing off to the kitchen. Now lunch would have been rather peaceful if the devil hadn't decided to emerge from hell with his henchman.
He sat on the opposite side of the room but his stare didn't have to be seen to be felt. It was an uncomfortable feeling and after hearing what Dean had said I had the uneasy feeling he might be plotting something.
The whole time I was in the room I felt uncomfortable I even found it hard to enjoy the roast dinner and the view of the rolling waves it was unsettling. It must of been about four when I got up to leave and as if he had read my mind Tom was at my side escorting me out.
"May I" he asked sweetly which was very strange I nodded to just be polite
"Have you seen my brother at all?" he asked guiding me onto the deck
"No I haven't seen him" I lied Toms grip around my arm tightened ever so slightly like a snake slowly squeezing the life out of its prey. My heart was beating faster and I tried to keep calm.
"If you do see him tell him I need to talk to him" he said through gritted teeth
"I will but I don't think he will want to talk to you" I replied, the snake attacked. Grabbing my arms tightly pulling me round to face him his face contorted into a smile so he didn't look like he was about to lose it.
"Don't tell me that he won't you don't know him as well as I do you..." he trailed off as someone passed his grip like ice clawing at my bare skin "You stay away from him you are like a servant not worthy of our family's name"
"I never said anything about your family name" I told him he moved closer to me his face only a few inches away from mine
"Be careful about what you say" he hissed pulling my jacket down (which I had borrowed from Kyle) "sharing clothes with each other are we" he said dryly smiling before walking back inside fuming. I breathed out shakily my mouth dry and I... I was shaking!
I saw Dean running up to me looking very concerned "Alice you alright what did he do?" he asked me hugging me
"He didn't do anything he just he was just scary and he threatened me, to stay away from Kyle" I told Dean leaning against him.
"I'm getting Kyle sit down out here don't worry he will be here soon" Dean said reassuringly sitting me down on a bench before dashing off. I held my head in my hands steadying my heart rate until it was normal. By then Kyle was out on the deck only half dressed with a pair of trousers on an his cotton white shirt.
"Dean said Tom was bothering you" he asked me sounding slightly annoyed I nodded leaning on him.
"Don't worry about it though I'm fine now I was just a bit shocked that's all" I said as he kissed my head.
We wandered around and before we knew it dinner time had arrived and Kyle had ordered us a bottle of wine.
"Look Alice when we get to New York will you comes with me?" he asked I looked at him my face distraught.
"Oh no this isn't happening" I jumped up stamping my foot in annoyance and running my hand through my hand
"What, what isn't happening do you not want to come with me?" he asked appalled
"It's not that it's something else I need to go and find the captain now" I said sounding terrified.
"Alice you can't just barge in there what's wrong" he asked me grabbing my arm
"I can't tell you" I whispered
"Yes you can. You can tell me anything" he told me leading us out through the double doors. I turned to him bracing myself for his reaction.
"The ships going to sink Kyle" I said. He stared at me dumbfounded and then laughed a little, I bit my lip in frustration.
"You're going mad Alice, this ship can't sink it's branded unsinkable" he said in disbelief
"Nothing's unsinkable Kyle" I snapped
"This ship is Alice" he said calmly slightly defensive
"You're wrong anything can sink there is no such thing as an unsinkable ship. This ship will hit an iceberg tonight it will sink taking thousands of lives with it you have to believe me Kyle please" I pleaded with him
"Alice that is something very hard to believe and how would you know something like that" he asked I couldn't tell him
"You wouldn't believe me even if I told you" I whimpered he stared at me his gaze was scared as if he didn't know me.
"Alice why are you saying all this stuff if you didn't want to be with me in New York all you had to do was say" he snapped striding back through the double doors, I couldn't follow him so I instead tried to find the captain.
I stuffed my hands into my pockets and jumped feeling an object I didn't recognise. I pulled it out and saw it was a wallet and no surprise the name was Tom Clifford. He must have put it in my pocket earlier for some reason so I discarded it dropping it on the floor and just in the nick of time as he wheeled round the corner with the captain moaning about his lost wallet.
"That's her there check her" he smirked the captain sighed waving two officers to check me. But they found nothing, the smirk faded from Tom's face at once and he stormed off.
"Sorry for the inconvenience Alice" The captain apologized
"Captain, what's the time?" I asked him
"It's 11:30pm" he smiled at me before the officers hurried him on the other holding me back as I tried to talk to him. Panic surged through me like a raging, wild tsunami my breathing became shaky and I fell to the floor unable to move an inch. It was going to happen it was going to happen, I couldn't stop the ship hitting the iceberg. Tears began to trickle down my face the warmth making me cry more, I couldn't breathe properly the state of panic confused me I didn't understand what was happening. I was living the disaster right now I might die never see my family again. I can't save Kyle, why did I shout at him just minutes before. Everything became... nothing to me, it was like I was blind but could see just not process anything.
"Alice what's wrong!" I heard Kyle shout his voice concerned
I sobbed into his shoulder as he lifted me up holding me tightly to him.
"Kyle...Kyle I'm so sorry but it's happening...it's happening and I can't stop it" I wailed he comforted me kissing my head and hands. "In ten minutes this ship will hit an iceberg and I have to save you otherwise you're going to die Kyle please you have to tell the captain to look.
"I can't get to him I'm sorry, look it's nearly midnight let's get you to bed you will be fine-" he said
"OMG" I shouted standing up pulling myself together I grabbed Kyle's hand tugging him with me as I ran as fast as I could it was nearly midnight I had to get to the front of the ship. My heart beat jumped up a gear when I heard the bell go and shouting from the upper deck,
"ICEBERG RIGHT AHEAD" a lookout shouted frantically over and over. Suddenly Kyle was with me pulling me behind him as we sprinted to the front of the ship. We arrived and Kyle skidded to a halt at the side of the ship looking ahead.
"Oh good lord" he murmured to himself he looked at me "I believe you Alice oh god I believe you" he ran back as the looming white shard of ice came closer like a monster emerging silently out of the dark, the silent killer.
The light from the boat reflected of it making it shine devilishly in the night gasps slowly began to fill the air from around the boat. It went dead silent as the boat began to turn away from the iceberg everyone held their breath hoping that it would miss even I did. It drifted closer and closer until it was inches from the boat. Had it missed?
There was a loud screech as ice met metal and ripped the bottom of the boat apart. My mouth dropped open as the sound echoed all around and the boat shook violently huge clumps of ice smashing onto the deck sliding around. Kyle and I peered over the side as the white horror continued quietly as if nothing had happened. I leaned onto Kyle struggling to simply breathe in and out.
It had happened history was taking its course and maybe even an extra life with it.
