Chapter Three: First Sight
Life sucks and then you die.
At least that's what people tell you, right? That you go through life and deal with all the bull, and for what? You could get a happy ending, but we all die, right? That's what I grew up to believe. My father always used to tell me that whenever life got rough.
He wasn't always so negative. We actually used to a very loving family until my dad's brother died in a car accident. My dad blamed himself since he was the one driving, but who would have been able to stop a 18 wheeler running a red light? Ever since that night, my dad change for the worst.
Breaking out of my dark thoughts, I checked the time to see that it was around 6:30. I still had a hour before I had to leave for school, but considering it was my first day, I wanted to try and make an impression- never mind the fact that I didn't want to be late for my first day of school. I was graduating with these people, I wanted to at least have some friends for the last 4 months.
I jumped out of my bed and looked into my newly stocked closet. Today is my third day in Forks and all yesterday was spent unpacking the rest of my clothing and my pictures. I put all my pictures that I favored behind my bed- the newly painted black wall. I finished painting yesterday with the help of my mom. It didn't take long since we started early. I also placed pictures of me and my mom around my room. I tried to choose pictures before my dad change because after he did, me and my mom didn't look the same.
I sighed before I looked around the small closet. I figured it was going to be cold and rainy today since we are in the wettest state in America- I figured that wasn't a myth quick with my stay here. I grabbed my pink cropped sweatshirt and a pair of black leggings. It wasn't too fancy for the first day of school, but I had limited choices since I have yet to update my clothes to Forks weather. I grabbed my white vans to slip on my feet. I looked into my mirror next to my closet and deemed myself ready.
I left my hair in it's usual brown ringlets and my makeup was simple with a little mascara and some eyeliner. Nothing too flashy or dramatic.
Before I left my room, I grabbed my bag and made sure that all my school supplies were accounted for. Once I was satisfied, I shut off my bedroom light and left my room, mentally trying to prepare myself for school.
I wasn't bad at school- quite the opposite actually. School came easily for me. I passed with A's and B's and did all my homework without a sweat. It was the students that I was trying to mentally prepare myself for. Back in Massachusetts, I had a few select friends but nothing too special. I didn't want Forks to became the same. I wanted to make new friends. Thank God I already met Bella- I wasn't going into this completely alone.
I reached the kitchen and dropped my backpack down near the doorway. I looked up to see my mom in a nice button down white shirt and a pencil skirt. She was job hunting today, and if nothing today, then tomorrow too. "Hey, mom." I greeted as I got to work on making something to eat for breakfast.
"Good morning, darling." She said turning to me and giving me a kiss on the cheek. "Are you all set for school?" I nodded my head to her question, pointing to my bag near the doorway. "Are you nervous?" She asked smiling down at me.
I shook my head at her question, "Not really." She looked at me not quite believing me but she dropped the conversation topic.
"Alright, I'm going to head out, I won't be home until dinner tonight so I'll need to take the car today." My mom explained as she grabbed the keys from the counter top. "Do you need a ride to school?" She asked fiddling with the keys making them clink against each other.
Just as I was able to answer my mom's question with a 'yes', my phone went off on the counter. I looked down to see that I had a text message from Bella asking if I needed a ride to school. I smiled softly at Bella's impeccable timing before turning back to my mom as she waited patiently for an answer, "No, Bella is going to pick me up today." I explained as I texted Bella back with a 'yes, please'.
"Alright, be safe and I'll see you later on tonight." She leaned down and kissed the top of my head before heading out the door. "Love you!"
"Love you too." I shouted back as the door closed.
It didn't take long before I heard a rumbling of another vehicle drive into driveway outside my house. I got up from my spot in the kitchen before glancing outside to see a big, red truck with Bella in the driver's seat. I shook my head with a smile as I thought about how perfect that truck was for Bella.
I grabbed my bag and threw away my trash before heading outside and locking the front door behind me. I climbed into Bella's truck and looked over at her, "Nice truck."
"My dad bought it for me as a homecoming gift." Bella explained quietly glancing over at me as she put the truck in reverse and taking off towards the school. I knew that
Bella was closer to her mom than her dad, but I could tell that she really appreciated the truck, it showed that Charlie cared.
"Are you excited about dealing with school?"
Bella turned to look at me with her best poker face, and I gave her a hearty laugh as we continued onward towards Forks High School.
"This is it." I muttered under my breath as Bella pulled into the school parking lot. "This is what hell looks like." I heard Bella laugh under her breath before she pulled into the spot closest to the main office. The only difference between this school and my old school was that Forks High had different buildings and mine was all in one.
We both got out of the truck and immediately all eyes were on us- like they were expecting us. Knowing a small town like Forks, they probably didn't get new people that often, so it was likely that they were expecting us.
"Nice truck." I heard some guy mutter over at Bella. I rolled my eyes with a sigh as Bella answered with a quiet thanks under her breath.
I waited for Bella to catch up with me before proceeding into the Main Office to grab our paper work. As soon as we stepped foot into the stuffy building, I could feel the stares leave my back. I signed as I could feel myself start to relax without feeling like I was being observed.
Bella and I walked up to the desk in the middle of the room, staring at the lady with deep red hair in a high bun. She didn't seem like she took notice to either Bella or I before I cleared my throat loudly. She tore her eyes away from the computer screen looking at Bella and I quickly before turning back to her computer, typing away with her long nails, "Names?"
"Uh, Isabella Swan." Bella cringed using her whole name.
"Chelsea Lockhart."
The lady looked back up at us with new interest as she realized that we were the new kids. "Oh, my apologizes!" She began searching through files and folders on her desk before she held up two manila folders with both Bella and I's names on the front. She opened up one of the folders and pointed to each paper, "The white one is your classes for the day, the purple one you have to have all your teachers sigh and returned by the end of the day- you can just hand them to me. The yellow one is to bring home to your parent or guardian to let you know what you will be learning. The rest are things you are going to need for each of your classes." She pointed to a handbook quickly,
"This is something that you should read when you get home. It holds all the rules to our school and our expectations."
She closed the folder back up before handing them to us with a forced smile. "I hope you both enjoy Forks High School."
I nodded my head as Bella thanked her quietly before we both walked out of the office. I shuddered as I thought about having to go back in there to hand her the purple paper.
"Isabella Swan and Chelsea Lockhart, right?" I looked up to see an Asian guy no older than Bella smiling at the both of us. He held out his hand to both of us expecting us to shake his hand.
Bella sighed, "Just Bella." She took his hand before shaking it loosely. I followed her lead before muttering a quiet 'hello'.
"My apologizes, I'm Eric Yorkie. The eyes and ears of this place. I know who's dating, who's hating, I am the shoulder to cry on. I'm also the lead on the school's newspaper and you two are front page, baby."
"Uh, I would appreciate it if you didn't." I shook my head. I was already getting unwanted attention, I didn't need a feature on the school's newspaper to make things worse.
"Whoa, chill." Eric smiled at me, "No cover."
"Thank you." I nodded my head as Bella sighed with relief- she had the same views as I did about the unwanted attention.
I heard the first bell of the day ring, telling people to start making their way to their first period of the day. I looked down at the schedule that I had to see that I had Advanced Calculus with Mr. Stevens. "I have to head to Calculus, will you be alright Bella?" I asked looking between her and the over-friendly junior.
Just as she was about to answer my question, Eric cut her off with a smile, "I'll lead her to her class. Sit with us at lunch?" I nodded my head agreeing before waving at the both of them and turning away from them.
If this morning was how the rest of the day was going to go, I might as well be screwed.
I made my way to Calculus and, surprisingly, it wasn't that hard to find. Even though the school had different buildings, they were all labeled and easy to maneuver. I walked into the silent classroom and all eyes turned to me, curious. I tried not to make any eye contact with them as I focused on making my way over to Mr. Stevens. He looked up at me as I approached his desk holding a purple paper with my name neatly scripted on the top.
"Hello, I'm a new student. My name is Chelsea Lockhart." I greeted giving him my nicest smile. He smiled back at me before reaching for the purple paper to sign it.
"Of course. You may take a seat anywhere you want." He handed me back the signed paper before turning back to his paperwork on his desk. I slipped the paper into my bag before making my way to the back of the room to an empty seat. All eyes were following my every move and I started getting uncomfortable with all the stares.
This is going to be a long day, I thought as I sat down at the desk turning towards Mr. Stevens as he began teaching.
The rest of my classes went by just like I expected them to; slow. The only teacher that didn't make me introduce myself was with Mr. Stevens. Not like I expected anything less.
The lunch bell rang throughout the school and I grabbed my backpack before hurrying out of the classroom like the rest of students. I glanced around the hallway and smiled when I saw Bella at her locker. I made my way over to her and leaned against the locker next to her, "I still stand by what I said this morning- this is what hell looks like."
Bella shook her head at me, "It's not too bad."
I raised my eyebrows at her as I laughed, "So you're telling me you like the stares that everyone is giving you?"
She closed her locker as she thought about what I said before shaking her head, "I take it back. It's pretty bad."
I gave her a laugh as we started walking to the lunchroom. "Have you made any friends?" I asked opening the large doors leading into the cafeteria.
"Uh," She looked around the room before pointing to the table that the guy we met earlier was sitting at. "I guess I met a few people. What about you?"
I didn't want to admit that I haven't made any friends so I just kept my mouth shut. Bella turned towards me to question my silence but a couple people at the table that Bella pointed to called her over.
"Bella, Chelsea." I looked up as Eric called us over. I smiled at Bella before making my way over to where Eric was sitting, taking the empty seat next to him, leaving the only other empty one on the other side of a blond male.
"Guys, this is Chelsea and Bella. Chelsea's a senior." Eric explained to the whole table. He turned to me and pointed to each individual person, letting me know their names. Not like I was ever going to remember. Eric turned his attention to Mike, the blond that was sitting next to Bella. "Mike, it looks like you met my girl, Bella."
"Oh, your girl?" Mike challenged with a smile, pointing to Eric.
Just as Eric opened his mouth to explain himself, another male junior made his way over to our table, leaned down and kissed Bella's cheek, "My girl." He smirked at the table before pulling the chair out from Mike.
I gave a laugh as Mike fell onto the ground before chasing after the other guy out of the cafeteria.
"Smile!" I looked up just in time to see a bright light go off in my face. I blinked away the red dots that were covering my vision as another girl sat at our table. "This is gonna look great on the feature."
"The feature's dead, Angelia. Don't bring it up again." Eric sat as he stood up from his seat.
I opened up my mouth to apologize to the newcomer named Angelia but Eric patted my shoulder lightly, "I got your back, baby." He smiled down at me before leaving the cafeteria.
"Well, I guess I'll just make another article on-"
I tried listening to the rest of what Angelia was saying but my eye caught something. I looked over my shoulder thinking that the boys were back, but I was wrong. 7 beautiful strangers were walking into the lunch room and I blinked, turning away and facing the table that I was sitting at. I wanted to keep watching them to figure out who they were, but I wasn't able to make myself obvious.
"Who are they?" I asked nodding my head over my shoulder, breaking Bella, Angelia, and Jessica's conversation. I took another glance over my shoulder and met eyes with a pair of rare golden specs. I felt the blush reach my cheeks before I turned to Jessica as she giggled.
"Those are the Cullen's." Jessica took a peek over to their table before looking back at Bella and I, since the Cullen's now peeked her interest as well. "That's Emmett Cullen, the big burly one. Next to him is Rosalie Hale, the gorgeous blonde. Next to her is Alice, the short pixie girl. She's really weird. Anyways, she's with Adam Cullen. Jasper Hale is the long haired boy at the end of the table that looks like he's in pain."
Bella nodded her head, "Who's the guy with bronze hair?"
Jessica didn't even look over her shoulder to know who Bella was taking about, "That's Edward Cullen. He and Jasper are the only single ones in the family. Totally hot, but apparently they don't date. But they're all like together, together."
Angelia shook her head at her friend, "Jessica, they're not actually related."
"I know but they live together. It's weird!" Jessica shook her head as I looked back over my shoulder at the group.
I looked at the blond that was named, Jasper and couldn't help but appreciate his beauty. Everything from his long curly hair to the pout-y look that he had, to the way he was picking at his lunch. He seemed to radiate beauty, it was almost too much to look at. He looked up and we meet eyes again. I broke away from our staring contest as Jessica's voice broke through.
"Don't waste your time, though. They don't date. Apparently no one here is good enough for them." Jessica looked down at her tray full of food and I couldn't even imagine how many times she was rejected by either Edward or Jasper. I shook my head as I glanced one last time at the Cullen table before going back to the inedible food on my plate.
"I wasn't planning on it." Bella muttered under her breath and I looked up at her to see that she was looking over at the table. We met eye contact once her eyes returned to the table. I signed as I played with the food on my plate again waiting for the bell to ring for next period.
I sighed as I entered my history class. This was my last class of the door and I couldn't wait til I got home and relaxed. This day has been filled with questions and unwanted people.
I looked up at the teacher named, Ms. Gilbert. She noticed me as I walked up next to her desk. "Chelsea Lockhart?" She asked reading her new list on her desk. I nodded my head as she held out her hand for the purple paper- which was almost completely filled out with signatures. She managed to squeeze her signature on the paper before handing it back to me. "You may take a seat next to Mr. Hale." She pointed to the desk next to the golden eyes that have been haunting my last two classes. I looked over my shoulder at the hauntingly beautiful man before nodding my head and following orders.
I tried not to make eye contact with Jasper anymore than we had in the cafeteria as I took my seat next to him. I couldn't help myself when my eyes turned to his direction, but I instantly regretted it when I saw his icy glare sent my way. I almost jumped at the unexpected look before settling into my seat uncomfortably due to the glare that I could feel on the side of my head.
In the corner of my eye, I saw Jasper move farther away from my seat, making me feel self-conscious. I bent my head down, smelling my shirt thinking that I missed putting on some perfume or something, maybe I just smelt. When I smelt the normal perfume that I wear, I sighed under my breath.
I spared a glance over at Jasper to see him glaring at the floor in front of him with his hand covering his mouth. He turned his eye sight over to me and I snapped my eyes back to Ms. Gilbert in the front, but I couldn't concentrate on anything that she was trying to teach me.
When the final bell rang, Jasper jumped out of his seat and ran out the door. I paused in packing my bag before shaking my head sadly. I didn't understand what his problem was, I didn't think that I did anything to upset him- I didn't even say one word to him.
I followed the crowd of students out of the classroom as I searched trying to find the familiar brunette. It didn't take long to find Bella as she was moving slower than the rest of the students. I caught up to her easily, "Well, today couldn't have gotten any worse." I muttered under my breath following Bella to the parking lot.
"You too?" She asked looking over at me. I didn't give her a verbal answer, I just nodded my head silently.
Even though I've been getting stared at all day, I couldn't help but shudder as I felt a particular glare on my back. I looked over my shoulder at the same pair of eyes that I kept making contact with all day- only this time they weren't the same golden color that I was getting used to, they were a black.
We reached Bella's truck slower than I would have liked but we quickly got into the cab at the same time before taking off with the rest of the student body. I sighed as I watched the school fade behind us in the rear view mirror. "Those Cullen's are sure weird." I said looking back in front of me.
Bella spared a glance over to me, "Yeah." She nodded her head unsure of how to answer my statement.
I opened the door to my house before turning and waving bye at Bella. She waved back and pulled out of my driveway. I didn't get to see her drive down the road because I just went into my house and shut the door behind me. I sighed as I appreciated the silent and the safety of my own home. No unwanted gazes, or unanswered questions- no golden eyes glaring at me.
I swung my backpack off my shoulder and dropped it on the ground next to the hall, mentally reminding myself that I would need to grab it before I went into my room for the night. I walked into the kitchen and grabbed something simple out of the fridge, which was mostly leftovers since me and my mom got take out a lot. Neither of us were really the cooking type, not that we were going to have time with school and work to try and be the cooking type.
I took a bite out of the leftover chicken tenders that was in my fridge before thinking about today and how I didn't exactly want to go back tomorrow to get glared at more.
I could always confront him about today and ask him what his problem was.
The more I thought about that idea, the more my mind agreed to it. I could get answers from him about what his problem was.
I placed the empty container in the trash but making my way to my room, I needed to finish my homework now that I had a determined attitude. I grabbed my backpack and sat on top of bed ready to complete some homework.
Sometime during me doing homework, I must have fallen asleep because next thing I knew I was walking around in dreamland.
I looked around me as I tried to find an escape route. Nothing was good enough to get me away fast enough. "Chelsea." I froze as I heard my name being called from behind me. I didn't dare look back as I ran forward, afraid to find out what was waiting for me to turn.
I couldn't stop my running, but it didn't feel like I was getting anywhere. It was a never-ending loop of me running. I stopped running to try and catch my breath, trying to figure out another plan of action when I heard my name again, "Chelsea, please."
I couldn't stop my body from turning towards the voice this time. Golden eyes looked back at me and I could swear that I stopped breathing all together. "Chelsea, I would never hurt you."
I shook my head at the Golden eyes as they turned into murky brown eyes, the once calming voice turning into a menacing growl, "I would never hurt you." Herepeated the same words making my heart skip a beat. I felt his hand wrap around my arm bringing me closer, before my mouth opened and a scream sounded through the air.
"Chelsea."
"Chelsea."
"Chelsea!" My eyes snapped open, looking up at a calming blue eye color rather than a haunting brown. I sighed as my mom tried to calm down my anxiety. "Another dream?" She asked quietly, almost apologetic.
I nodded my head and looked up at my ceiling, "Nothing new." I lied as I thought about the Golden eyes that appeared in my dream this time.
She nodded her head as she patted down my hair softly, "Okay, baby. Try and get some more sleep, okay?"
I nodded my head at her request as she got up from my bed, "Goodnight, mom. I love you." I whispered as she reached to turn off my bedroom light.
She glanced over at me with a sad smile, "Goodnight, baby, I love you too." She whispered before turning my bedroom like off.
I glanced over at my alarm clock to see that it was 10:13 pm. I sighed as I stared at my ceiling, realizing that I wasn't going to be able to get back to sleep for at least a couple more hours.
I turned over to my side and shut my eyes, trying to get the Golden eyes out from behind my eye lids.
