as much as I thought I did.

Chapter 4

She stepped out of the building. No one had tried to stop her from leaving. Then she thought, why would they stop her? Unless they wanted to get fired which she knew would happen if anyone tried to. She had said goodbye to Lucy and she had shed a tear. Caroline told her she wasn't dying and she could call her anytime she wanted. Klaus never did once came out of his office and the rest of her salary was given to her by Martha. She sent it back, because she didn't want to take it. She didn't want any of that man's money. She turned around to look back at the building, then she saw him staring at her from his window. His face had a hard expression as he watched her, and his mouth had formed a grim line. Their eyes met, and then she knew exactly why he was merely staring out the window and not coming forth to bring her back. Because that was what he wanted. For her go far away from him. Tears burned her cheeks. In frustration she had turned from the building so that he would not see how devastated she was. When her tears had passed, with her head held high despite her feelings of hopefulness, she walked away from Mikaelson Enterprises, from Klaus and from everything related to him, noting on her way that he had moved from the window. But she knew he was still watching her just the same.

Now, nearly reaching her apartment, Caroline was trying to figure out a plan. She realised that there really was nothing she was going to do. Elena and Bonnie's faces greeted her at her doorstep and they pulled her into a hug. She had called them before she left. Barely choking back sobs, they led her into her apartment and sat her on the couch with her face buried in Bonnie's neck whilst Elena was rubbing her back soothingly. She was being ridiculous, she knew that. She was acting like someone she loved had died or her she had gotten dumped. Well she did love her job very much.

Questions weren't asked. Her friends knew she would tell them what happened when she was ready. Caroline rocked back and forth, her eyes stark with misery as she stared at nothing. She wanted to punch something, preferably Klaus' nose. She wanted to roar her rage to the heavens.

But first, she needed a drink, a stiff one. She got up from the couch and went straight to where she kept a bottle of scotch in the liquor cabinet. She didn't drink much, only when it was necessary. Elena and Bonnie gave her a curious look. She would tell them everything. Maybe after she had that drink of scotch. She opened the cabinet and took out the bottle, and splashed a couple of inches of the amber liquid into a glass. The smoky, biting flavour was sharp on her tongue as she took the first sip, then poured the rest of it down her throat. She needed the sedative effect, not the taste.

"Caroline?"

"Give me a minute, Elena," she replied as she poured her second glass. Where was she going to start from? Her job was gone, and she might not be able to work ever again. There was no telling if Klaus was going to do what he intended to do straight away, but she didn't think he would wait. As bad as things had been, at least he had informed her what he would do because had he not, she would have been embarrassed and upset than she already were. Everything had came apart, and she was terrified. She had saved enough money and it would take about three months before it finished. She wouldn't know what to do when that time comes, how to manage everything. She was helpless. She hated the feeling, hated it with a ferocity that made her stomach knot. On the other hand, she had friends who would help her when she needed it so it was okay. She couldn't believe that she thought Elena and Bonnie would get tired of her after some time.

Caroline turned to her friends who were waiting anxiously for her to tell them what had happened. Sighing, she moved away from the liquor cabinet and approached them. She sat down beside Bonnie and kept her eyes on her glass as she opened her mouth and told them everything. There was a few gasp here and there, Bonnie constantly snorting and Elena shaking her head with a shocking look.

"Yeah, that's what happened," Caroline said, after narrating her story. Surprising thing was that during her story, she couldn't believe she had been so unprofessional. Everything she had done was somehow her fault- call her crazy but yes she did believe it was her fault. She hadn't been acting like a secretary should. But when you are working for someone like Klaus, you're bound to be unprofessional.

"Caroline.." Elena started to say but she quickly cut her off with a groan.

"It's my fault, isn't it? God I didn't know I was that unprofessional. Believe me I wasn't thinking about anything except killing Klaus."

"Totally understandable, Care. A boss like Klaus, who wouldn't? But yes, some of it was your fault. I mean come on, spitting on someone else's food, that was childish and so unprofessional. I didn't take you as that kind of person," Bonnie stated.

"I know that now." She gritted her teeth, glaring at the poor glass that hadn't done anything to her. "You're not here to make me blame myself. You're here to comfort me. I think I need another drink." She started to get up but Bonnie pulled her back.

"No you're not," she declared. "We don't want you getting drunk, Caroline."

"Bonnie's right, drinking isn't going to help you." Elena snatched the glass from her hand and placed it on the side table beside her before turning her attention back on her friends. "I can't believe he wanted you to kneel and apologise to his mother." She looked disgusted and angry at the same time. "This is the twenty first century, no one does that anymore. What a complete arsehole."

"So what if he fired you?" Bonnie continued, looking slightly annoyed. "You should be happy. You're free from him and now you can work anywhere you want. It doesn't have to be Mikaelson Enterprises.

"Have I also mention that he's going to ruin my life?" Caroline admitted angrily.

"Hasn't he already by working for him?" Elena asked, confused.

There was a deadened quality in her voice as she spoke; it seemed at first that the words were going to catch her throat. "No, no, this is completely different," Caroline told her, turning her head away from her friends gaze. "Much worse actually. He said- he said he was going to make sure I didn't get another job, Elena. I won't be able to work at all." Her voice trembled and wavered.

Their eyes widened, and horror filled them. "What?!" They both shouted in unison.

"What am I going to do?" Caroline said fearfully, her voice cracking. "Meeting him was bad luck for me. I should have walked out the first day. But I didn't because I thought- I thought he wasn't such an evil man. Tell me what I had done to deserve this." A salty tear trickled down her cheek to puddle at the corner of her mouth.

"I'm so sorry, Care. Please don't cry." Elena wrapped her arms around her. We're going to help you. We're your friends. You're not alone." She gave her a gentle smile.

Bonnie shook her head and asked in a scared tone. "He can't do that, can he?" She looked between Caroline and Elena, then back at Caroline. "Tell me he isn't that powerful enough to convince everyone not to hire you."

"Oh, he is," she breathed. "You know the Mikaelsons are well known and respected. Everyone worships the ground they walk on. What makes you think they would hire me if Klaus tell them not to, Elena?" She was starting to get mad and she didn't want to raise her voice at her friends. She had to calm down. It wasn't their fault. "He has everyone completely wrapped around his fingers."

Damn those Mikaelsons. All they thought about was themselves, not anyone, nor about the lives one of them enjoyed ruining. Caroline hadn't felt this much hate in a long time for anyone. Scratch that, she had never felt this hatred before. And she didn't think she was being fair for hating the rest of the family. She had only met Klaus and Rebekah, and that was good enough to show her that none of them would be nice. If Rebekah had been nice to her, her opinion on the Mikaelsons might have changed. But no matter what, though, she hated them; nice or not. Even if Klaus begged her to come back (which wouldnt happen), there wouldn't be any reason for her to go back and work for him.

"We can't let him do this to you. There has to be another way," Bonnie said solemnly.

Her lips trembled a little, and not sparing Bonnie a glance, she murmured, "There is no other way." Believe her she had thought about it billion times and she couldn't find a way out of this.

"I will talk to him." Caroline stared at Bonnie, unable to figure out if she was serious or not.

"What?" Elena's voice rose sharply. "You can't be serious."

"Oh, I'm very serious, Elena. If he thinks we're just going to sit here and let him ruin our friend's life, then he's mistaken."

There was a tense little pause and then Elena asked, "What happened to that Bonnie who had a huge crush on him?" Caroline wondered about that too.

Bonnie gave her a charming grin. "Gone the moment he messed with Caroline."

"Are you sure you're not going to pass out or throw yourselves at him when you see him?"

That seemed to annoyed Bonnie and she retorted, "Please, Elena, I wouldn't do that. Well I would have weeks ago, not anymore."

Well, actually that was a complete lie, Caroline thought it was one of the most funny thing Bonnie had ever said. She wanted to talk to him about her, probably yell or do worse. Whereas she felt that wasn't necessary at all. She knew there were so many things she wanted to say to him, but sending Bonnie wouldn't be such a good idea. "You can't go there. I'm afraid he's going to ruin your life too and I will feel so bad. Its best you don't talk to him."

"Caroline."

She started to say more, but she shook her head. "No, Bonnie," Caroline said, deliberately emphasizing her words. "I appreciate you helping me but I don't want you to get in. the middle of it." She ground her teeth together. "God I'm so angry. I just want to punch him and this stupid tears won't go away."

"Do you know the best way to make your anger go away?" Elena asked with a creepy smile.

"What is it?" Elena immediately shot up from the couch, her eyes rounded with excitement as she dashed to Caroline's bedroom, coming back with a paper and a pen. She reached for her hand and placed them on it. Confused, Caroline asked, "What am I going to do with a plain paper?"

"Well I'm getting there, aren't I? You're going to write a letter to Klaus and you're going to write your feelings. You will not send it. It helps a lot," she explained.

"Are you sure it will work?"

Elena nodded her head. "I'm hundred percent sure. Try it."

"Okay," she muttered, looking down at the paper. She didn't know where to start. Sure she had imagine herself saying everything she had felt for Klaus, but writing it, that part was not easy. It only helps when you're staring at the person and it's then everything you've ever felt would come pouring out. "Dear McJerkface," she wrote down because the name suited him a lot.

"Oh that's a good start!" Bonnie exclaimed.

Dear McJerkface

You ungrateful bastard. You're the worst excuse of a human being. The trouble you always cost me is enough to make you deserve a punishment. But I can't do that, can I? Doesn't mean though I can't suggest a few things. I think- no I don't think, I know you deserve to be boiled in oil, Klaus Mikaleson, to get some punches on your nose, to get a sharp thing up your butt and to get tortured very hard after getting your legs shot into pieces or maybe a needle in your eye and all diseases existing. But I hope before that you get cancer in your groin and became mashed potatoes in a machine, then I would laugh if you got forced to amputate parts of your body. You would do everything alive a favour if you leave for another solar system. I bet you don't know why I'm saying all those things, do you? Because you couldn't care less. You think the world is below you but Klaus you're wrong about that. Not everyone is ready to lick your smelly legs. I certainly wouldn't. You come to the office and act like an obnoxious jerk. Couldn't you even for once smile and say hello? Why, do you think we're not worth getting a greeting or what? Well let me tell you something Klaus, you and your stupid self should go fuck yourself, you insolent prat. We aren't the ones with the problem, you are with the way you behave. If you can't understand what you're doing is wrong, then I hope one day you will realise but I am sure that you never will.

I sincerely hate the way you treat people, speak and walk and I'm still wondering why everyone won't stand up to you. You behave like an arse, you look like one, you are one. You better believe me when I say everyone hates you and can't stand you. You're cold and heartless and you don't care how much you hurt people. I was sick and tired of you. I'm glad you fired me. I wouldn't want to work with someone like you. I pity you, I pity you so much. You're not special. Honestly you're not superior to me in any way. You think you're so great. I don't know if you've realized, but being a complete jerk is no way to live your life. You deserve to rot in hell.

Caroline Forbes

Bonnie and Elena burst into a fit of laughter after reading what she had written and she found herself laughing along with them. Elena was right. It helps a lot and if only she could send it to him. Seeing Klaus' reaction would be worth it. Knowing what deep shit she would be in, she wasn't going to.

Every single thing written on the paper was just harsh. She wasn't harsh, she was nice and she had never done any wrong thing to upset someone until she had met Klaus. He was not going to read it, but she still felt bad about it. Holding the letter, she realized that she wasn't even angry anymore. She just needed a way to let it all out.

"That was funny to read," Bonnie said with a giggle. "Funnier than the time Katherine attempted to cook."

"Bonnie, that wasn't funny at all. She tried to burn down the whole house," Elena retorted.

There was a knock on her door and they turned to look at her with a questioning look. Caroline answered them with a shrug and placed the letter on the table. She didn't know who was at the door. She wasn't expecting anyone and she was at the door after the second knock. She hesitated for a minute, then unchained the door before grasping the handle as she opened it.

A tall handsome man in a black suit stood in front of her. He had a short brown hair, high cheekbones, a strong jawline, and a straight nose. She gulped.

"Caroline Forbes?" He asked her in a polite tone. She nodded her head nervously. "I'm Elijah Mikaelson." Her eyes went wide at the realization that he was a Mikaelson. He was Klaus' brother. But he didn't look anything like him though. What could he possibly want with her? Did Klaus sent him? It had to be the only reason why he was standing in front of her. Her heart was pounding wildly, and she took deep breaths to steady herself.

She hadn't expected this, hadn't expected to see a Mikaelson in her house. It confused her, it surprised her. It was too soon to see Klaus' brother, for it only brought her memories of him and what a complete arseholes the Mikaelsons were; at least she knew Klaus and Rebekah were. The man standing before her wasn't wearing a frown or a look of disgust like Rebekah would. He wasn't looking at her in pure anger or hatred like she knew Klaus would. No, this man was smiling down at her, as if he had just seen his long lost friend.

Does he even know what she had done? It was possible, because it would be the only reason why he was here. It could also be possible that he was smiling at her because he was plotting something, she thought. But he could also be here to harm her or something and that scared Caroline to death.

"What- what do you want from me?"

"I'm sorry for coming here without informing you, Ms. Forbes, but I had to." The gentle tone he used caught her off guard. She wasn't used to a nice Mikaelson. "I know you must be wondering why am here so I won't waste any more of your time. It's about my brother Niklaus. I'm aware you've been his secretary for months and you were fired today. Is that correct?" If he hadn't told her his name, she would have asked who Niklaus was. She wasn't familiar with Klaus' full name. Actually, she had always thought Klaus was his name. It felt weird to hear someone called him Niklaus.

"Yes, but I still don't understand why you're here."

"I'm re-hiring you."

To say she was shocked was an understatement. She had not expected that to come out of his mouth. Anything, but that. Re-hiring her? So soon? It had just been a few hours that she was fired. She couldn't think of any reason why he would want to re-hire her after the way she had been to his mother and what she had said to his brother.

Unless...

Unless he was setting her up and Klaus was behind it. Caroline felt almost sick at the idea. She couldn't dismiss the thought, even though she could see him doing such a thing. What would he gain by doing this? She looked at Elijah, carefully looked at him as she tried to find a clue that he wasn't being truthful, but as she searched, all she could really see was an honest man. No. She shouldn't believe him at all. Everything was so confusing.

"You're re-hiring me? Why? Did Klaus set you up to this? Is this some kind of a joke? Is he planning to do worse than he is already going to do?" she asked him the questions in a hurry, not giving him the chance to answer one of them.

"Niklaus didn't sent me here. And what are you on about, Ms. Forbes? Please, tell me," he said with a deep frown. Wow, she really had to give him an award for being a great actor. He was acting as though he didn't know what he was talking about. She was hundred percent sure that Klaus had sent him here.

"You act like you don't know anything. Your brother fired me because I wouldn't kneel and apologise to your mother. Believe me, I was going to apologise to her, but I just wouldn't do it the way he wanted me to do."

"Can I come in?" he asked out of nowhere. She wanted to say no, but then she just decided to let him in. It wouldn't hurt to hear what he was going to say. She stepped back and let him into her house. He bumped into Elena and Bonnie who were on their way out. Elijah nodded at them, and they nodded back as they turned to Caroline.

"We'll call you later, Care. Bye." They hurried out of the door after glancing at her again and she could hear their thoughts asking her who he was and what he was doing in her house. She offered them a reassuring smile before closing the door behind them. Elijah followed her and sat down, crossing his legs.

"I know very well you didn't mean to be rude to my mother. She herself sent me here to re-hire you. We both know Niklaus wanted a reason to get rid of you."

"Your brother is a terrible bitter man," she uttered as she fiddled with her finger.

Hearing this, he leaned forward, deep in thought. Finally he spoke, saying each word carefully and with much thought. "I've known my brother all my life, Ms. Forbes. He is not a terrible man, not even close. Nobody really tries to understand why he is the way he is except for myself and my mother. There's a story behind his bitterness and it's not mine to share." He let out a long, tired sigh. "I know he has been giving you a hard time, but I promise you things will change when you come back. I'll be around all the time."

Caroline shook her head. She wasn't welcomed. Even when she had worked there, she had never really felt accepted by her ex boss, only been tolerated. It had not been easy the last few hours. Klaus' words and actions still burned in her memory as if it had happened now. Coming back would mean more torture. Just the mention of his name made her furious. She had been wrecked because of him, and she could never forgive or forget. Forgetting was impossible, when everyday the same thing happened and will keep happening over and over again.

She had realized some time ago that she wouldn't go back to being Klaus' secretary and that was that. She had of course clinged to the hope that he would apologise and tell her to come back. Already accepted that it wasn't happening. He hadn't even cared that she had left, so why was she thinking that he would want her back?

No. She would never forget what Klaus had done her. And with luck, she would never see him again.

"I'm sorry, Elijah, but I will not work for Klaus again. I've already made up my mind," she said, taking a deep breath. "I refuse to work with your brother. He will never change, not even with you around. I don't think I can bear any of his insults and rudeness." She spoke through clenched teeth. "He is going to make sure I didn't work again. He said that, did you know?" She had seen the determination in his eyes and known he hadn't been bluffing about that. "And you think he is going to accept me back with open arms?" When he had tormented, in one way or another, for months, he wouldn't want her back. Her temper flared but she held it in tight control.

"He doesn't have a choice." They both fell silent, each with their own thoughts.

"Why is he doing this? What have I done to him?" she eventually asked him, already knowing that he had no answer to her question. Caroline refused to believe that he had tortured her just because he hated her. They had to be another reason.

"You've done nothing wrong," he answered truthfully. "Niklaus likes to take his anger on the world." Staring at her, he pleaded, "You should come back." He stared at her with a sad expression.

Elijah would have to drag her body and that's when she stopped breathing. She didn't really know how else he was going to make her come back. Convincing? Yeah, good luck with that, because he needed it. Caroline raised an eyebrow. "Why? Why should I come back?" she demanded. "Why don't you go to his previous secretaries and re-hire one of them? Why me?"

"Because you're the only one who is not scared of him. There's something about you, Caroline." She looked at him expectantly, waiting for him to explain what he meant by that. But instead, he stared back at her.

Caroline restrained herself from an unladylike snort. "I won't come back. Sorry for wasting your time. I won't ever work for the Mikaelsons." There was no mistaking the bitterness in her voice.

Elijah frowned and watched her steadily for a long minute before he rose from the couch. "That's alright," There wasn't any hint of annoyance or anger in his tone, and if there was, it wouldn't change her mind about not returning to work for his brother. "Please, do think about it. If you've change your mind, you know where to come, Ms. Forbes." She wouldn't change her mind and she certainly wouldn't step foot inside Mikaelson's Inc. Offering him a smile, she nodded. Elijah had made his way to the door when he paused and turned to her. "Oh yes, Niklaus mentioned that there are some files with you? Can I have them back please?"

"Yeah, sure. There are right here." She had kept them on the table the other night and had completely forgotten to return it back to the owner. Thankfully Elijah was there to collect them. He had saved her from giving it to Klaus himself. She gathered the files and handed them to him.

Elijah parted with, "Thank you for your time, Ms. Forbes. I am sorry about my brother. Have a nice day."

"You too, Elijah." Caroline shut the door behind him with a sigh. It didn't make sense. Why would Klaus have gone so much trouble to fire her, and then his brother wanted her to come back? She may have believed him when he told her Klaus didn't sent him, it didn't mean she wasn't suspicious. Elijah had seemed honest though, but whatever. She was done with their family and she wanted to have a peaceful day without having to think about Klaus.

The letter. She needed to get rid of it. It had helped her, there was no need to keep it around. She could always write another when she felt like it. Caroline reached for it on the table, but it wasn't there. Where could she have kept it? She shouldn't panic yet. It had to be around somewhere. Dimly she remembered keeping it on the other table earlier where Klaus' files had been.

Files. Letter.

"Oh, God, please no." An overwhelming panic rushed through her veins, and she ran to the closed door and flung it open, hoping she would see still Elijah, but there wasn't anyone by her door and she shut it closed. "Oh my god." She kept saying it over and over again. The letter was gone. Gone with the files Elijah had taken to Klaus. Klaus. He was going to read and- she couldn't think of what he was going to her.

Oh. My. God.

She was dead.

Should Klaus read the letter or not?
