Part Four
The most sincere feelings are the hardest to express in words
"You know I really have to hand it to the people who are working here, they really know how to make a good cocktail, in fact scrap that, I've got to give props when its deserved. These cocktails are fantastic, maybe some of the best I've had." Caitlin commented with a happy sigh as she leaned forward and picked up her frosted glass from the table in front of her and took a long sip of the bright red liquid.
"They really are, I don't even know what this is that you've ordered me but it is really good. The food is amazing as well, I genuinely can't remember the last time I had something that tasty, maybe the last time I was at home and Mamma cooked her lasagne, that might be the last time now that I think about it." Danielle replied thoughtfully, feeling pleasantly buzzed as she looked around her, rubbing at her slim stomach.
It had been Caitlin's idea to stay in the hotel and eat down at the restaurant before drinking cocktails, a plan which Danielle had agreed to happily. They had moved out to the cocktail area which was crowded but not to the point that it was uncomfortable for either of them.
"Mamma's lasagne is good but the last time I had an amazing meal was when you cooked for me at your place the last time we were there, that stew you made was like heaven." Caitlin told her, flashing Danielle a wide smile and using her straw to point at Danielle, clearly uncaring of the drops falling to the surface of the table.
"That was a good stew, I really need to cook it again soon." Danielle said before she shrugged and picked up her own drink, holding the glass out to Caitlin, who stared at it for a moment, before she lifted her own and clicked the two together. "You picked such a good place for us to come Cait, this place is so nice, I could happily stay here forever."
"It's not bad at all" Caitlin agreed as she leaned back and looked around her. "You know once the sale of your house has gone through you could use the money to buy yourself a house out here. I mean there is nothing keeping you in the area you lived in and perhaps because of what happened you should consider moving somewhere completely new. You'd be able to afford it easily, hell you could probably already afford it even without the sale of your house."
"Maybe so" Danielle remarked as she sipped at her drink, glancing down and looking at the drink with a slight frown when she realised that it was empty.
"Well it's definitely an option and you should seriously consider it baby sis." Caitlin replied, giving her a long glance before she abruptly changed the subject. "I went back to the pool earlier when you were having your bath and it was open again, the tape was gone and everything. I asked the lifeguard on duty and apparently that Commander who couldn't stop staring at you and his team have already solved the case and have the murderer in jail."
"Already?" Danielle asked, turning to look at her in surprise. "That's pretty quick so they must be good at their jobs. I mean it been what? Twelve hours if that."
"About that I think" Caitlin confirmed with another long sip of her drink.
"As for that comment about the Commander, what about your Detective, don't think I didn't see you flirting with him and don't think even for one moment that I don't know what that means Caitlin Anne Marie Richardson" She said with a knowing grin.
"Oh, my Detective you say, I think you mean Danny." Caitlin replied smugly as she looked down at her fingernails.
"Please tell me that his name is not Danny" Danielle commented, groaning when Caitlin nodded at her before she spoke.
"Afraid so baby sis, Detective Danny Williams" She confirmed.
"Because having two people in your life called Danni isn't going to get complicated quickly." Danielle said with a sigh as she shook her head before she focused back on the dark-haired woman, her eyes narrowing slightly. "How did you find out his name because they introduced themselves as Commander McGarrett and Detective Williams to us earlier and you've been with me all day."
"Ah Danni, will you learn that I have my ways of finding these things out." Caitlin stared with a wink at her.
"Oh my god, you got his number from that card he left us and dropped him a text, earlier didn't you? You are truly unbelievable Cait." Danielle remarked with a laugh before she shook her head and leaned it against the back of her chair, looking up at the dark sky above her, her eyes tracing the path of the stars.
She felt peaceful in Hawaii in a way which she hadn't experience for a long time. The pace of life seemed slower there, the people who she had encountered so far had been pleasant and seemed to take their time to simply stop and see the world around them instead of taking it all for granted.
"Personally, I'm glad that the whole business with the murder is finished and that we can just forget about it and get back to enjoying ourselves on vacation." Caitlin said, attracting Danielle's attention as the she came to her feet and stretched her arms above her head. "Speaking of the pool, I think I might head down there now and have a quick swim to cool off. The lifeguard I spoke to earlier said that they have underwater lights on during the night, it's meant to be really pretty. Do you want to come down with me or would you rather stay here?" She asked.
Danielle considered the offer for a moment before she shook her head.
"I'm okay here at the moment thanks, I'm just going to order another drink and just relax here, if you're longer than say forty minutes then I may head down and join you." She said, flashing her sister a warm smile. Caitlin nodded at her.
"I doubt I'll be that long" She replied before she frowned, looking around the sitting area as though she was just realising that they weren't the only people there. "Are you sure you'll be okay if I leave you alone here? Don't forget that Harry and Julian aren't here watching you" She pointed out.
"That's because Harry and Julian are having some well-deserved time off" Danielle responded mildly, thinking briefly of her two bodyguards who had been with her since she was twenty-one watching her back. "Besides we've been here for three days now and I can count the number of people who have approached us on one hand, I have no problem signing autographs. Go and have your swim and stop worrying about me." She said, making a shooing motion with her hands.
For a moment the brunette hesitated clearly torn before she shrugged and nodded at Danielle.
"Fine, stay here and keep our table, order me a drink when you do, I'm not bothered about which one you get me, I'll try anything once. I'll be back before you know it." She said before she turned and headed down the winding path which led away from where they were to the pool area.
"Enjoy yourself" Danielle called after her, watching her until she disappeared before she sighed and closed her eyes, enjoying the feel of the warm breeze against her skin as she listened to the soft hum of conversation and laughter surrounding her.
Being here made all her problems seem so far away and easy to forget.
"You look peaceful."
Danielle frowned slightly, opening her eyes as she looked towards the voice which spoke from beside her, her eyes widening when she saw Commander McGarrett. He stood slightly to the side of her, his hands held loosely at his side as though he was attempting not to alarm her. She remained quiet for a moment, her eyes scanning his face noticing the way the shadows from the candles on the centre of the table threw up shadows onto his face making his eyes appear bluer and more intense.
"It's a peaceful place." She replied finally, sitting up straight in her chair. "What brings you here? Are you following up on your case?" She questioned, trying not to notice just how attractive the man in front of her was.
"Something along those lines." He answered, looking around him briefly as though he was searching for something before, he looked back at her. "Are you here alone? Where's your sister?"
Danielle raised an eyebrow at the question, tilting her head as she considered him for a moment.
"Cait has gone down to the pool for a swim" She told him, nodding towards the path which her sister had taken. "Are you looking for her? If you head down there now, you should find her"
"You're the one who I was looking for Danni, not your sister." He replied, a look in his eyes which she couldn't quite read. She looked away from him, her heart skipping a beat at his words before she spoke.
"I see" She remarked, tapping her fingertips against the glass.
"How long will she be in the pool?" He queried.
"Probably about thirty minutes or so, I think she wants some time apart and so did I, I enjoy spending time with her but sometimes she can be over protective as you saw this morning." She remarked, finding him surprisingly easy to confide in. "Don't get me wrong, she does mean well but I think that she forgets that I am capable of taking care of myself, the same as I do when she's not around."
"I hate to tell you this Danni but she is your older sister, it's sort of in her job description to worry about you, it's what older siblings tend to do." He confided, his mouth curling up into a half smile. "Didn't fancy going for a swim then or are you waiting for someone?" He asked, his eyes narrowing slightly.
"I'm not waiting for anyone" She assured him with a shake of his head. "Unless you count waiting for Cait to return. To be honest I'm just comfortable where I am. It's been quite the while since I've been able to just sit somewhere quietly and just enjoy the view without someone telling me that I needed to go with them because I needed to be somewhere else. I mean it helps that the cocktails here are amazing as well." She said with a slight laugh as she waved her hand towards her glass.
"They are good here, sometimes we come here as a team as a bonding exercise." He told her with a smile as he moved closer, pulling out the chair opposite her and hesitated for a moment. "May I?" He asked, indicating the seat.
"Yeah of course please join me." She said, her eyes wide as he sat down opposite her. "If you're off duty and have no other plans then do you fancy joining me for a drink since you're here? It would be handy to have an expert of the cocktails with me; you could tell me which ones were good to have."
"That I can do happily since I'm off duty now." He told her, reaching out and picking up the cocktail menu, his eyes scanning it for a second before he placed it on the table, resting his arms on the surface as he focused on her with a questioning look. "Have you tried the blue Hawaiian yet or is that still on your list of things to try?"
"I think it's one I still need to try; I don't remember having it McGarrett." She replied, nibbling on her lower lip for a moment in thoughts before she shook her head.
"McGarrett" He repeated, a small, almost fond looking smile on his face. "I'd rather you called me Steve, Danni than call me by my surname."
"Steve it is then" She agreed, meeting his eyes for a moment, she swallowed finding herself unable to look away.
"I like the way you pronounce my name" He told her casually before looking away and raising his arm at one of the waiters who came straight to their table, a tray in his arms.
"Good evening Sir, what can I get you to drink?" He queried, picking up Danielle's empty glass and placing it on the tray as he waited for Steve to speak, his eyes briefly looking over to Danielle with a look of appreciation before he focused on Steve.
"Two Blue Hawaiians please." Steve replied, an undercurrent of confidence to his voice which she found strangely attractive.
"Of course, Sir, I'll bring them straight over." He nodded at them both, his eyes flashing over to Danielle once more before he left them, heading in the direction of the bar.
"I'm guessing by the fact that the pool is fully open and the tape is gone that you've managed to solve your case?" She asked him curiously, tilting her head to one side, surprised by how comfortable she felt in his presence.
"Yeah its been solved." He responded. "It turned out that the victim owed the murderer a kit if money and he was sick of waiting for it, so he decided that you cut his losses by getting rid of the victim and taking what he had available in the hotel room instead. He's in our holding cells now, that argument you told us about, really helped steer us in the right direction so thank you for that." He told her; his eyes warm as they gazed at her.
"I'm glad it did" She said happily. "And I'm glad you caught the guy as well. I guess you and your team are used to dealing with cases like this all the time?" She remarked with a shake of her head. "It must be a tough job to have to always see the worst that humanity has to offer. I've heard people talking about Five-O, it seems like you have a good reputation for getting things done, they say that you're the best on the island who gets called in one the difficult cases?"
"We do tend to deal with a lot of different types of cases which helps to keep things interesting. It's a good job to have and we get to help people who need it which is the main thing." Steve said, glancing up at their waiter as the man reappeared at their table and placed the two cocktails on the table in front of them with a nod before he disappeared again. Danielle watched with a smile when Steve took out the straw and dropped it on the surface of the table before he lifted the drink up and drank it straight from the glass, making a sound of appreciation at the back of his throat when he lowered it.
"I can see that you definitely enjoyed the cocktail" She said with a laugh, indicating his half empty drink.
"I'm a sucker for anything with pineapple in." He confessed with a grin, leaning back in the chair as he spoke. "I was hoping I would find you if I came back here tonight." He told her, taking her by surprise.
"You were?" She replied, tilting her head to one side.
"Yeah, I was wondering whether you wanted to grab some dinner with me tomorrow evening, I know this great place on the island. It's small and quiet and not many people seem to know about it which will give us a chance to talk and get to know each other better. I finish work at six so I could pick you up around seven if that was a good time for you?" He suggested, his eyes locking on hers with the same intense look as before.
"Are you… are you asking me out on a date Steve?" She questioned him curiously, raising an eyebrow when he nodded at her
"I am" He replied, flashing her a smile.
Danielle remained quiet for a moment, searching his face before she slowly nodded at him.
"I would like that; do I need to dress up for the place you're taking me?" She queried.
"You'd look good in anything you choose to wear Danni" He told her, the blunt comment causing her to laugh. There was something refreshing about him which she hadn't come across in a while, something which intrigued her.
"I'm sure I can figure out something to wear then." She said, watching him for a moment, noticing that he kept glancing down towards the watch on his wrist. "I'm getting the feeling that there might be somewhere else you need to be right now?" She remarked, taking a sip of her drink.
"You're observant." He told her, sounding impressed before he continued, a reluctant expression coming to his face. "The truth is that I'm meant to be having dinner tonight with Detective Williams and his daughter Grace. He's cooking for us and he may kill me if I turn up too late for it. I would cancel on him but…"
"But you have to go" Danielle replied when his voice trailed off. "I love cooking and I can tell you that there is nothing more frustrating when you're cooking a meal and someone turns up late or worse doesn't turn up at all."
"It's not that I want to go Danni." He stated, coming to her feet.
"I know" She said softly with a smile as she leaned forward and took the cocktail from him, placing it beside her own. "I'll take care of this for you." She promised with a wink, grinning when he laughed at her comment before he reached into his pocket and pulled out a card which he held out to her. "I've written my personal cell number and my home number on there so you can contact me at anyone, the work numbers are on the front as well." He said, watching her when she reached out and took it from him, glancing at both sides.
"I should give you my number as well, in case something comes up tomorrow and you need to cancel." She commented, reaching into her bag and pulling out a pen, she pulled over one of the brightly coloured napkin and wrote her cell number on it before she picked it up and passed it over, his fingertips brushing against her as he took it, the slight contact causing her to shiver.. "This is my personal cell number so there's only a few people who have it." She told him, bringing her gaze up and meeting his eyes.
"I'll guard the number with my life Danni." He promised her with a soft smile.
"I'd appreciate that though I don't expect you to give your life up for it, we can hardly go on a date tomorrow if you're dead after all." She pointed out, glancing past him in time to see Caitlin moving towards the table. He followed her gaze, frowning slightly before he looked back at her, his smile coming back.
"I'll see you tomorrow around seven then"
"See you tomorrow." She agreed, watching as he turned and headed away from the table. She watched him until the small crowd swallowed him up before looking back in time to see Caitlin retake her seat.
"Was that Commander McGarrett you were just speaking to?" She asked Danielle with a frown, picking up her drink and downing it.
"Indeed, it was." Danielle answered, using her straw to stir her drink, a smile playing around her mouth.
"What brought him here exactly? The case is already closed so he couldn't have any more questions about it for you or did he just happen to come across you sitting here and decided to be polite?" Caitlin demanded, her frown growing when Danielle shrugged at her.
"Actually, he came to the hotel looking for me so he could ask me out on a date tomorrow night."
"He asked you out on a date?" Caitlin repeated in surprise. "What did you tell him then? I'm guessing you said no in that polite, ice queen way you have down to a fine art."
"I said yes so we're going out for dinner tomorrow at seven." Danielle corrected her with a shrug.
Caitlin remained silent for a moment; her eyes wide as she watched Danielle before she sighed with a shake of her head.
"I really hope that you know what you're doing here Danni." She said finally as she picked up the cocktail menu.
Danielle thought back to Steve's smile and the look in his blue eyes as he had gazed at her and found herself smiling, meeting her sister's eyes when the other woman looked up.
"Oh, I really think I do Catie."
