Edward Cullen

Despite Mike's comments and my protective yet slightly possessive nature toward Bella, I couldn't help but lighten up at the sight of Emmett and Jasper. I hadn't seen either of them in over six months, and the last time we spoke, I knew this gig was a possibility for both of them but didn't know they actually got it. I stood to go to them, but my mind was conflicted. I considered bringing Bella with me to meet them or leaving her with Mike and Tyler. Not knowing what they—especially Emmett—might say, I quickly decided leaving her with Mike and Tyler would be the safest option. Emmett and Jasper knew about my feelings toward Bella. Hell, it seemed like my feelings for Bella were exceptionally obvious to everyone but Bella, and no one was shy about their opinion on the situation.

I excused myself, promising Bella I'd be back when she shot me a panicked look. I glanced at Mike before leaving, questioning if I really was picking the lesser of two evils by leaving Bella with him.

Jasper was the first to see me approach. His eyes flickered behind me. "That her?" he asked, his smile telling me he already knew the answer.

Jasper's question caused Emmett to turn around and finally see me, but like Jasper, he looked past me toward where Bella was. Emmett whistled low, bumping me with his elbow. "Pictures don't do her justice, man."

Didn't I know it. I ran a hand through my hair, fighting the urge to turn and look at her. There was a strong possibility she was glaring daggers at me for leaving her behind.

"So?" Emmett prompted.

"So, what?" I asked, looking between the two men I thought of as the brothers I never had.

I grew up with one sister, Alice, who was a few years older than me and recently became engaged to her high school sweetheart, Jasper. Jasper had been a military brat, moving around the country until his father finally settled in Alaska for him to attend high school at the same time as Alice. They were both accepted to the University of Washington, and my parents didn't think twice about picking up and moving closer to them both as I finished my last two years of high school. Jasper's sister Rosalie grew up in Seattle with their mother after their parents divorced. She was older than Jasper, but you would swear they were twins with how alike they were and how well they got along. Rose was married to Emmett, and our family welcomed them both with open arms.

"You guys official yet, or what?" Emmett clarified, unable to take my silence anymore.

I ran my hand through my hair again, this time tugging on the ends. "No. We're just friends. I'm sure Alice told you how I blew my chances to smithereens."

"Told you," Jasper sang, dodging the punch Emmett aimed for his arm. "But you know you're one of the lucky ones who's in a position of having more than one chance, right?"

"Yeah," Emmett chimed in. "Jasper told me you told Alice it was a case of bad timing. That doesn't count as blowing your chance."

"Dear Lord, you two gossip like old ladies." I huffed, revelling in the thought I may be worthy of another shot with Bella.

"Well, if you don't appreciate our hidden love of gossiping, I guess you don't want to know about the dance planned at the end of your two weeks here with your favourite people." Emmett chuckled as he saw me glance around the gym that was filled mostly with guys. "Alice and Rose got the dance instructor jobs here at the sports complex. They don't start until tomorrow. We're waiting to announce it so you guys can have a visual of the improved guy-to-girl ratio … and to give you a leg up on the competition."

"Leg up?" I asked before I could stop myself.

Jasper snorted and gripped my shoulder. "You are the only one with VIP information about it. Consider it to be a family perk."

"Or, you know, consider it enough time to grow the balls to ask Bella before someone else does tomorrow," Emmett added.

I couldn't help myself from glancing at Bella, surprised to find she was already looking my way. A wide grin spread across my face, and I could see her cheeks turning pink, even from across the gym. She was stunning, really, and despite her clumsiness she could be—hands down—the belle of any ball in my mind.

She looked away, and I turned my attention back to Jasper and Emmett. "You guys know that no one packed for a dance, right?"

Emmett waved his hand. "We did some exploring the other day. Turns out the drama room is stocked with dress shirts, dress shoes, ties, dresses, high heels, you name it. We got approval to borrow things as long as everything is returned." He checked his watched and patted me on the back. "We're going to start soon. Go back to your illusion of just being friends, and make damn sure you ask her to the dance, or I'll kick your ass."

I rolled my eyes at him but couldn't wipe the grin from my face as I walked back to where Bella, Tyler, and Mike were sitting. Now I just had to figure out both how and when to ask her.

As promised, shortly after I sat down next to Bella, Jasper and Emmett stood in the middle of the court with one other guy I didn't recognize. I got a bad vibe from him from the start. He came off as extremely arrogant, and I didn't miss the mini staredown he had with Bella, but I hoped it was purely coincidental.

Lori was extremely forward, which was a little disturbing but made the situation mildly humorous. I didn't know why Bella had such a strong reaction since it resembled what occasionally happened to me at school, and normally she was the one who found those situations amusing.

Reid pissed me right off when he made Bella re-do her push-up test. Her face showed her determination as she pushed herself harder and harder. I even noticed the look of pain that would flash in her eyes every now and then. I didn't think she breathed at all, but she got through it. She was on the smaller side but still had an athletic build. She had more upper body strength than one would think—something I had experienced first-hand. The day she had hit me with a basketball was the day I had learned how much power was packed in that tiny body.

When Reid walked away after Bella proved herself, I thought she was in the clear. I was clearly mistaken when he made her re-do a few more fitness tests throughout the morning. Every time, she would bite her tongue and do it again before I had the chance to even say something to him.

Emmett and Jasper noticed what Reid was doing early in the morning, and I could see them try to make their way toward us to record our results, but Reid somehow managed to always be there first.I figured he was getting frustrated with Bella proving him wrong in front of everyone, so I was confused why he kept pushing her to re-do some of her tests. Whenever I had my arm around Bella's shoulders or whenever we would laugh about something and he was close enough to hear, I noticed Reid glaring at me with measured hatred. My guess was that Lori told him all about our encounter and how I said no to her, causing the protective big brother to come out and play. Reid's weird behaviour hit new heights when I noticed his looks toward Bella rapidly flipped between hatred and pleasure. I wondered if he was twisted enough to be planning revenge. If he was, it looked like he was enjoying the idea.

After what felt like forever, we were led to a cafeteria for lunch. Dozens of pizza boxes lined one of the long tables, and we took turns grabbing slices before sitting down. Everyone went up for seconds, all of us ravenous and devouring all the pizza in a matter of minutes. Almost as soon as Bella finished her last piece, she folded her arms in front of her on the table and crashed. One glance showed she wasn't the only one. Emmett and Jasper made their way over to our table when Mike and Tyler took off, both flashing sympathetic glances at Bella's sleeping form as they sat. I moved to wake her up, but Emmett stopped me with a shake of his head.

"Nah, man. Let her sleep," Emmett said.

I caught sight of Reid and Lori sitting off by themselves, Lori scraping the toppings off her slice of pizza in disgust.

"So, what's their deal?" I asked, indicating the sibling duo with a tilt of my head.

Jasper dropped his voice and slid closer to me. "Daddy Warbucks is heading this whole thing and made a substantial contribution to building the whole complex. Reid plays on his college team and is actually a good player, but he's a pain in the ass to work with. Lori's just a spoiled brat who wants all the attention and refuses to be treated like all of you guys."

Emmett continued, leaning across the table so I could hear him. "Even though Jasper and I are second and third in command, the pay is really good so we figured we could suck it up for two weeks."

Jasper looked past me, and his eyes settled on Bella's unmoving form. "We're done major testing for the day. We just have to take some measurements of you guys, and then we're letting everyone out early."

Reid stood and made his way over to our table. Lori hovered a few feet behind her brother when he approached us. I froze when he threw his arms around me and Jasper like we were old friends.

"Ready?" Reid asked, looking between Jasper and Emmett.

They stood from the table, and Reid removed his arm from around my shoulder, his eyes quickly flicking to Bella before leaving. I breathed a curse, unable to keep up with Reid's rapid mood changes.

I waited until the last minute possible to wake up Bella, grinning as it took her a few moments to orient herself. I collected our paper plates and tossed them in the trash on our way out of the cafeteria. We only had to wait a few minutes once we were back in the gym before Jasper announced our final task of the day.

Bella and I ended up in opposite lines for our measurements. As excited as I was to be in Jasper and Emmett's line, I hated the fact Bella was going to be alone with Reid and Lori, even if it was only for a few minutes. The lines moved fairly quickly, and soon, Bella walked into Reid and Lori's room. A minute later, Tyler emerged from Emmett and Jasper's room and I stepped inside.

Emmett and Jasper behaved themselves for the most part. Emmett teased me about how scrawny I looked, to which I immediately pointed a finger at Jasper. Jasper may have had a few inches on me in terms of height, but his body was the true definition of lean. While Emmett grew up playing football, Jasper was a born runner, making both the cross-country and track teams in college. We joked a bit more as they recorded my height and weight, but it didn't surprise me when Emmett brought up Bella. What did surprise me was that he put his joking nature aside.

"Edward, I know you think you messed things up with Bella, but from seeing you guys interact today the one thing I can tell you is that she likes you too. If you don't believe me there is one foolproof way to check it for yourself. Lean in to kiss her, and if she leans toward you, you know she likes you back," Emmett said, opening the door for me. "It worked for me with Rose, and just look at where we are now."

I nodded so he knew I heard him as I walked out the door. I thought over his advice as I looked for Bella, frowning when I couldn't see her anywhere in the gym. I made my way over to where Mike was sitting next to all our bags, already bundled up and ready to go.

"Have you seen Bella or Tyler?" Mike asked.

I shook my head. "You and Tyler were out before us. I'm guessing Bella's still in the room."

I kept my eyes on the door to Lori and Reid's room as I swapped my shoes and layered up. I was confused when Reid and Lori's door opened and it wasn't Bella who walked out. I turned and saw her bag still sitting next to mine. I slid the zipper open a few inches, noticing instantly her outside shoes and clothes were still in it.

Mike flinched at the sound of the zipper closing. "I'm telling Bella you opened her bag."

"Go right ahead," I murmured, my eyes doing another scan of the gym where everyone was packing up.

Tyler appeared at the door that led to the hallway, also dressed and ready to go.

"Tyler, have you seen Bella?" Mike asked.

"I don't know. I saw her go into the hall before me when I headed to the bathroom," Tyler said, his thumb pointed over his shoulder.

"Was she in the hall?" I asked, a sinking feeling starting in my chest.

Tyler scratched his head. "Not that I saw."

Pieces started to click together in my mind. I knew Bella a lot better than I realized sometimes, almost to the point I could read her like a book simply based on her actions. I let out a deep breath and opened my eyes.

"She's probably outside," I declared. I grabbed her bag and slung it over my shoulder to join mine.

"I don't know, man. She didn't have her coat," Tyler trailed off but still followed me as I made my way across the gym. Mike brought up the rear a few steps behind us.

We headed outside, and I saw Bella instantly. She was sitting on a bench with her legs tucked against her chest and her head on her knees. The feeling in my chest sunk to my stomach, and I knew something was up.

Mike took the lead, quickening his stride to reach her first. "Bella! There you are. Ready to head back to the hotel?"

Bella looked up at the sound of Mike's voice. "Hey guys," she said in a flat voice as she untucked herself from the position she was in. She tried the plaster a fake smile on her face. "Let me just grab my bag."

She moved to stand up, but I put a hand on her shoulder to stop her, noting how cold she felt. I frowned, remembering her shivering when we arrived in the morning. I pulled her bag from my shoulder and sat it beside her on the bench. "There's no need to."

She layered up quickly, and once she swapped her shoes we were ready to go. Mike and Tyler started walking, and I snagged Bella's bag off the bench before she could, tossing it back on my shoulder.

"Edward," she began, putting her hands on her hips. She was about to argue with me, and I would be a liar if I didn't say she was gorgeous, even when she was being stubborn.

I reached for her hand and pulled it from her hip. I gave her a gentle tug, but she wouldn't start walking. Instead, she held out her free hand with her palm up, waiting for her bag.

I shook my head. "Bella, you had a tough day with Reid making you re-do so many of your fitness tests. Don't argue because it won't work."

I gave her hand another gentle tug, and she huffed beside me before moving. I dropped her hand and we walked in silence. I kept an eye on her as we walked a few feet behind Mike and Tyler, noticing she was more than just exhausted. Something had to have happened.

I reached over and grabbed her hand, giving it a shake to get her attention. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing," she mumbled, refusing to meet my gaze.

"Bella, please," I begged, keeping my voice low. "It's not nothing."

"Later," she said with a sigh after a few long seconds.

This time I didn't let go of her hand. I felt a sense of relief knowing she was going to tell me, but I was still worried. Her mood appeared to only slightly improve as we walked to the hotel. When we finally reached our destination, we only made it to the elevator before Mike and Tyler began complaining, declaring they were going to have a nap because they were completely wiped out. I rolled my eyes. If anyone needed a nap, it would be Bella.

When we reached our room, Mike was only a few feet inside when he started shredding his layers at rapid speed, not slowing when he was down to only his boxers. Though his back was to the rest of us, we all got a hint of a show as he bent down, taking his boxers with him.

"Oh my God," Bella yelped, covering her eyes and turning to face the door for good measure. Though Tyler and I were used to Mike changing in the locker room, Bella was a whole other story. I could see her embarrassment steadily rising in her cheeks.

"Really, Mike?" Tyler groaned, gesturing to Bella when he turned around to see what the problem was.

At least Mike had the decency to look a little ashamed, lowering a hand to cover the front of his body even though Bella was facing the other direction. "Sorry, Bella. Forgot about the whole sharing a room thing for a second there."

"Please just change," she begged, but I could hear her laugher threatening to emerge. I grinned, glad her mood was improving, even if it was only slightly.

Bella stood to face the wall as both Tyler and Mike changed before perching themselves as far as possible from one another in their shared bed. Tyler flicked the television on for some background noise before giving Bella the all clear.

"Bella, wake me up if you need anythingat all," Mike said with a wink. I almost growled. If I could, I would force him into a chastity belt and give Godzilla the key. That moment made me realize how relieved I was that Bella would be sharing a bed with me instead of with Newton. In spite of my earlier thoughts, I really didn't know what he would try when she was asleep. My skin crawled at the thought, and I instantly decided to push it to the back of my mind.

Bella ignored him and sat down on one of the chairs in the hotel room, tossing her bag unceremoniously on the floor. I sat down on the edge of our bed and watched her in silence. She wouldn't meet my gaze, but she didn't appear upset, so I let her be in her silence. The sun was streaming through the window, making one side of her face glow and causing her hair to shine as the sunlight hit it, her normally chocolate brown locks showing a hint of red. She was so beautiful but didn't even realize it.

After a while, the soft snores coming from the other bed broke Bella from whatever haze she was in. She finally looked at me, her eyes holding mine for only a split second before looking away.

"What are you thinking?" I asked quietly. Mike and Tyler were already asleep, and I didn't want to wake them up.

"What to do to pass the time," she answered. "I don't feel like sleeping, but our options are somewhat limited here."

I thought about what we could do, and I remembered her telling me before that she missed going swimming. She loved it, but in Forks it was too cold and rainy for anyone to really have a pool in their backyard. From the time we met, I could only recall us going swimming once, and that was a pool party to celebrate the end of exams and the beginning of summer. Our student council led by Jessica Stanley pleaded with the school board to arrange it, and we had to go to Port Angeles to do it.

"How about a swim?" I asked.

Bella was silent for a few beats longer than I expected, making my nerves shoot into overdrive, afraid she would say no. Finally, a wide smile graced her beautiful face.

"Yes." She nodded as she stood from the chair. "Yes, I would love that."

I felt a grin form on my face as I mirrored her, standing from the bed and moving to my duffle bag. "Excellent."

With minimal digging in our bags, we each emerged with a handful of clothes. She walked a few steps toward the bathroom before stopping. "You can change in there first," she offered, stepping aside.

I shook my head. "Nah, go ahead. I can change out here."

She rolled her eyes. "It's scary how comfortable you guys are with changing in front of one another."

"Hey now. They're asleep," I defended. After Bella shot me a pointed look—raised eyebrows and all—I continued. "We're all classy, respectful gentlemen who have spent nearly two years on almost all the sport teams Forks has to offer. It's not like we look—we adhere to the change room etiquette."

She snorted a laugh and walked into the bathroom. "Whatever. Boys are weird."

I threw on my black swim trunks and changed out of my sweaty shirt into a clean one. Bella walked out of the bathroom and had on a pair of shorts and a tank top to cover up until we reached the pool. I could see the strings of her bathing suit tied around her neck in a lopsided bow.

"Ready?" I asked.

She smiled and nodded. It was a quick journey to the pool even with the one wrong turn I took full blame for. I pushed open the door to the pool, holding it open for Bella before grabbing two of the thin, white, complimentary towels. The smell of chlorine hung in the air as we made our way to a pair of lounge chairs next to the had the pick of the litter as no one else was there.

"Can we go in the hot tub first?" I asked. I was admittedly a bit sore, but Bella would be in more pain than I was. The heat from the hot tub and the jets would hopefully help.

"Sure," Bella answered as I pulled my shirt over my head. I heard a small gasp, and when I glanced back at Bella I saw her staring at me with her mouth wide open, her eyes glued to my stomach.

"You know, Bella, it's not polite to stare," I joked. She blushed, skipping pink and going straight to crimson. I tried my best not to laugh though my ego definitely rose a few notches.

"Sorry," she mumbled just loud enough for me to hear before shedding her shirt and shorts.

I had seen her in a bathing suit once in the summer, but it was a one-piece. Though she was jaw-dropping then, it didn't compare to seeing her in a navy blue bikini now. Her body was all subtle curves and soft skin I itched to touch. I swallowed hard as I watched her walk to the hot tub, mesmerized by the way her hips swayed with every step she took. It wasn't until she turned around and crossed her arms over her chest that I broke out of my daze.

"Who's staring now?" she asked, stepping into the water. Though her embarrassment was evident, I swore I saw a smug smile tugging at her lips.

I stepped into the hot tub, relishing in the burning heat as I sat down in front of her to begin my plea for forgiveness. "Bella, I'm sorry for staring. I'll give you a massage if you forgive me." I tried to give her my best puppy dog look, but instead of forgiving me, she laughed and shoved my shoulders. I grinned and grabbed her small yet powerful hands. "You know what? No. I take back my apology. Zero regrets. You are stunning, Bella."

She rolled her eyes. "Yeah, yeah. You're not so bad yourself there, Cullen," she teased with a grin.

We laughed before settling into a comfortable silence. I smiled, enjoying our ability to laugh and tease one another, but I could see in Bella's eyes there was still something lingering in her mind from earlier. It was a few minutes until Bella spoke.

"Were you … never mind," she mumbled, a curtain of her dark hair swinging down to hide her face from my view.

"Was I what?" I prompted, tilting my head to see her better.

"Serious?"

"About?"

"Serious about the back massage in exchange for forgiveness?"

"So demanding," I teased, moving so I sat beside her instead of across from her. I grabbed her waist and moved her so she was sitting between my legs. I started massaging her shoulders, frowning when I instantly found knots in her muscles. I applied a little more force, causing Bella to flinch forward, away from my hands.

"Sorry," I cringed, removing my hands from her smooth, flawless skin.

"No, no. It was a good hurt. I promise." She turned her head to the side to give me an apologetic smile. When I didn't move, she gave a little wiggle in front of me, prompting me to continue.

I let out an exaggerated sigh. "Demanding and shameless. What will I ever do with you?" I lifted my hands to her shoulders once again and continued her massage with a firm but gentler touch than I started with.

"Dunno. But I can make one mean batch of chocolate chip cookies, so you have to weigh your options carefully here."

I pretended to ponder. "I do like cookies. I suppose I'll keep you around then."

We could be silly. We could act like total dorks. It was just one of the ways Bella and I worked.

Her laugher turned into a groan as I hit a tender spot. It was shortly followed by a content sigh, and I smiled at her reaction. I started to chuckle when I saw she was blushing so hard that her neck was turning red.

"I take it you're enjoying your massage?" I couldn't help but ask.

"Mhm. You have no idea how amazing it feels."

"Yes, I do," I said under my breath, hoping she didn't hear.

I continued to massage her back in silence until I realized that Bella still hadn't told me what was wrong earlier. "Is it later yet?" I asked her quietly.

She sighed, and I saw her shoulders droop in front of me. "Yeah, I suppose it's later."

It wasn't anything close to what I expected. She told me what happened while she was getting weighed and measured. I stopped her massage and wrapped my arms around her waist, holding her safely to me. I was absolutely livid and pissed at Reid, even if it was an accident he was well into her personal space. It could have been far, far worse, but it was by no means acceptable. After she finished the story, I didn't say anything, afraid my growing anger would get the best of me. I pulled her tighter against my chest to assure her I was there for her and to help me calm myself down.

"Bella, I'm so sorry," I apologized. "I can talk to Jasper or Emmett about— "

"No. No. Thank you, but no," she cut me off. "I don't even have much of a chest, so who knows why he would've even done that … it could have been completely accidental. I'd rather just let it be."

"You shouldn't have had to go through that. You don't deserve being treated like that at all."

I had stopped the massage as soon as her story started, had even tucked my hands firmly under my legs to get them far away, but Bella was still sitting between my legs. I wanted nothing more than get as far as I could to give her space despite the urge to pull her in my arms and keep her safe. My back was firmly pressed into the seat, leaving me no more room to back up.

Bella shifted a fraction of an inch closer to me. "Please don't make this weird."

I hesitated.

"Please," she repeated, reaching back to put my hand on her shoulder.

Tentatively, I started moving my hand, concentrating on staying on her upper back. "So, why did you promise to give me a back massage when you already knew you were going to be forgiven?" Bella asked, changing the subject. She tilted her head so I could see the joking gleam in her eyes.

I took in a deep breath to calm myself from what she said about Reid's actions. Though I wasn't happy with how she was brushing the incident off, I respected that she wanted to change the mood back to our joking and fun nature.

"Because you looked like you needed one, and you would have never asked me to give you one," I answered simply.

She laughed. "You know me too well," she accused playfully.

"Is that a problem?" I asked her, my lips brushing her ear.

"No." Bella's voice was soft and quiet.

"Good."

I stood and got out of the hot tub, offering my hand to Bella to help her out. She took it without hesitation, and once she was fully out I picked her up bridal-style, ignoring her protests as I walked toward the pool. A quick plan formed in my mind, and I grinned despite the fact Bella would probably hate me. We hadn't gone swimming yet, and she would most likely not go in the pool because she would still be warm from the hot tub. Being the good friend I was, I just wanted to speed up the process of getting her in the pool. She wrapped her arms around my neck and glared at me as I didn't slow my stride. She had figured out my plan and had no intention of going in without taking me with her.

"Edward, don't you dare!"

I jumped, causing both of us to crash into the deep end. The water was freezing upon impact, but it was welcoming and much needed. I resurfaced just in time to see Bella coming up. I grinned at her, and she surprised me by sticking out her tongue. I stuck mine right back at her and swam away. It became a game. I let her do the chasing, let her choose how close she wanted to come.

Apparently quite close as she had me pinned against the side of the pool, staring at me with an arched brow.

The conversation about Reid was pushed to the back of my mind. I wanted to focus on spending time with Bella and making her smile. She was a good enough distraction herself, though, looking like a temptation in her bikini and pressed against me in various ways as she struggled to keep herself facing away from me.

"Bella," I whined.

She laughed and refused to look at me. "I'm still waiting for an apology."

I knew she was just playing around, but I decided to let her have her fun anyway. "Fine. Bella, I'm sorry for throwing you in the pool, but I also went in so that evens it out."

"Hmm, it depends," she pondered.

"On?" I prompted.

"If there is a promise made on receiving another back massage at some point in the next few days," she answered in the sweetest voice I had ever heard her use.

I felt my eyebrows rise. Bella usually never asked anyone for anything. Maybe my massages were starting to corrupt her, and I had no shame in using and abusing that newfound knowledge.

"I promise. All you need to do is ask, and I will be right there." I was being honest and talking about more than just a back rub. I would always be there for her, no matter what she needed.

"Apology accepted. You're forgiven." She moved her arms, no longer trapping me. Instead they moved to my shoulders. The trace of fun and laugher faded from our faces as we couldn't seem to look away from one another. I could feel something between us though I didn't know what it was. We stared at each other for an immeasurable amount of time as my heart thudded painfully against my chest.

Emmett's words rang in the back of my head. Lean in to kiss her, and if she leans toward you, you know she likes you back. The urge to kiss Bella was overwhelming, and I knew at this point, at this moment, there would be no going back for me.

"Bella," I whispered, slowly sliding my hand to cup her neck while the other gripped her hip tighter. Part of me was excited, and part of me wanted to run like hell, scared I would mess up my chance again.

As Bella and I slowly started leaning toward each other, I realized my feelings for Bella were so much stronger than I ever thought they were. When our mouths were only an inch apart, what would have been one of the best moments of my life ended when someone yelled my name.
