Ace of Spades

Chapter 3: Unexpected Attack

Geology was one of the worst subjects I had on my timetable. Stuck with a group of third years and constantly being called the 'Ochibi' of the class, I cursed my stupid Oyaji for sending me to this hellhole. Constantly grumbling throughout the lesson, I glared endlessly at the old talkative sensei who took the class and at my new 'senpais' who all seemed to pull fake grins at me.

"Don't glare at us with those eyes, Echizen," Fuji senpai uttered, sending me a smile that made me shiver from head to toe.

First impression, Fuji senpai seemed like a pretty nice person. Yet, I could smell a quiet and more sarcastic side that lingered deep inside his soul. Turning my head away, I quickly darted my eyes out the gothic classroom window.

Outside, dark clouds floated across the sky, blocking every possible chance of sunlight reaching through. A gloomy atmosphere soon fell around the school, coldness travelling against the transport of wind. Awful weather for humans, great weather for vampires.

"Looks like it's really going to rain huh?" Kawamura senpai who sat a few seats ahead of me muttered out

Light chuckles were heard, "What do you think Tezuka?" the figure next to me questioned, "Extra long patrols tod-"

A sudden wave of loud sirens went off around the building. Every student in the classroom all lifted their heads and glanced around- some seemed confused while others were perfectly alarmed by the unexpected sound.

The third years that sat around me immediately stood up at the sound of the blaring siren. Sending each other a small nod, everyone dispatched themselves from the table and in a second or less, were already heading for the classroom door. A few third year students followed, all standing up and rushing out.

Confused at the current situation, I slowly pushed myself off the seat and rise onto my feet. Turning around and gazing out the window, I stared at the furry that was going on down in the courtyards.

"Oi Echizen, what're you still doing here?" A voice suddenly interrupted my thoughts

Spinning my head around, my eyes came across a panting and panic-stricken Momo standing in the doorway of the lonely classroom. I blinked, not knowing what to say.

"We have to go now, Echizen!" Momo cried, storming into the room before grabbing my arm and forcefully dragging me out

Surprised at the sudden yank, I flabbergasted as I attempted to keep up with Momo's quickening footsteps, "W-what's even going on?" I exclaimed

"We're under attack- the south ward is broken down to stage three!" Momo replied, glancing back with horror in his eyes

I frowned, "I didn't understand any of that-"

With another jerk, Momo tugged me into the school hall. Stepping inside, I was greeted by a swarm of both first and second year students. All looking eager and wondering what on earth was going on outside, the students frantic about the hall. Controlling teachers tried to calm the swarm of students down, but from the progress they're going at now- it was a total failure.

"What're we doing here?" I questioned after being released from Momo's hard grip

A short sideways gaze was sent my way, "It's a safe house for first and second years," Momo answered, "Since we can't participate in battle, the school made the hall a safe house during emergency times."

My brows dipped, "Why can't we fight?" I asked, "I mean we're under attack, so why don't they send more people to help?"

Momo sighed, "We're not experienced enough, Echizen," he insisted, "The laws state that only third years are allowed to participate in battle- the rest of the school simply have to be protected."

I snorted, "Sounds stupid to me," I muttered

"It's not really your call-"

"Oi Momoshiro!" a sudden cry was heard from across the hall

Turning our attentions to the direction where the voice came from, I blinked after seeing a staggering Sengoku-san approach us with an anxious and troubled face.

"Sengoku-san, what're you doing here?" Momo questioned, examining the boy from head to toe, "And what happened to you?"

Huffing and puffing upon reaching us, Sengoku nearly collapsed to the ground, "The school premises have being broken-" he panted, "All wards are down!"

With that being said, Sengoku's legs gave up and crumbled to the ground. Seeing this, Momo rushed forward and panicked over the fallen third year. Teachers and other students soon began to rush over and crowd around the scene, wondering what on earth happened to a beloved third year.

"Someone quickly get a first aid kit!" a sensei yelled

In an automatic second, the alarmed students scrambled into action. Rushing around the hall and trying to obey the sensei's orders- the room was soon a blurry mess- and it was just for one unconscious third year. Pulling a light frown across my brows, I merely stood aside and watched the drama before me unfold.

"Oi Echizen, don't just stand there!" Momo shouted at me, "Help me!"

Sighing, I gave a small roll of my eyes before taking a step forward. Yet, just as my heel left the wooden ground, I felt something vibrate and rattle beneath my feet. Glancing down, I stared at the glossy shade of golden brown- nothing, probably just my imagination.

Another step taken- this time I heard something crack loudly behind me. Reflexes forcing me to spin around, I widened my eyes at a sudden sight of bloodthirsty red eyes.

Oh shit….
