Alec is genuinely surprised by his parents' reaction when they realise he broke up with his warlock boyfriend; or rather the other way round. He thought they would be happy, ecstatic even, he knew they never liked who he is. Didn't want to admit their son is gay, even less that he's in love with a Downworlder. His father, as usual, have shown no emotion and simply nodded at Alec, but Maryse pulled him close and hugged him for a good couple of minutes. The last time this happened was when Alec was 5. His mother gave him several comforting pats on the back awkwardly then sent him away. When Alec left the dining room, he was as shocked as the rest of his siblings.
The buzzer in Magnus' apartment started when he was still in bed, grumbling about client with horrible timings, he picke up.
"Hello, the magnificent High warlock of Brooklyn, that being said WHY ARE YOU HERE AT 8 IN THE MOR-"
"Hey, it's Tessa."
Then silence followed. Tessa? Tessa Gray?
"Yes, Tessa Gray, if you're wondering." The young woman on the other line laughed lightly. Magnus immediately buzzed her in, excited to see an old friend after years of well, not seeing her.
"Hey Mags, still grumpy as ever I see. How are you doing?" When Magnus opens the door, Tessa has a gentle smile on her face, and she looks exactly the same as the last time he saw her. She gave him a quick hug, then stood back and glanced at him.
She raised an eyebrow at his plain black silk pyjamas and unkempt hair but said nothing.
"I'm good thanks," well, depends on how you define good, "I haven't seen you in ages! What brings you to New York?" He grinned, as unexpected as this is, it's always great to see an old friend, one that's never getting old and will not betray him. His face darkened at the thought, his brain seem to have got the memo to remind him that he has to think about Alexander Lightwood every single waking moment.
"Just wanted to travel around. Let's not talk about me though, I heard it on the grapevine that you're dating a shadowhunter, so tell me, who is this boy who managed to capture our warlock's heart?" Tessa said teasingly, clearly not hearing the more recent news.
Magnus lifted the corner of his mouth sadly, "Well the boy I was dating, is called Alexander Lightwood, but that doesn't matter anymore." He turned around and found Tessa looking closely at the photo of Alec which he never managed to throw away.
It wasn't anything special, just Alec in his old sweats reading god knows what in Magnus' living room. Magnus remembered vividly when Alec lifted his head upon his arrival, he smiled and the smile was so beautiful Magnus quickly took a picture of him. That smile was full of love, of adoration and Magnus can never bear to throw it away. It would feel like betrayal; to both Alec and the wonderful times they have spent together.
"Wow, you never quite got over Will, did you?" Tessa asked, with a fond twinkle in her eyes as she talked about her late partner.
"It's not like that," Magnus whispered, recalling that time when Alec got jealous over Will, and damn if he's not cute when he's jealous…
"I mean don't get me wrong, I absolutely still love the whole black-hair-blue-eyes combo, but Alec's different…" he trailed off, lost in his thoughts. He miss the times when he could cuddle a jealous-but-not-quite-mad Alec and whisper sweet nothings into his boy's ear just to convince him that yes, nothing compares to you, I love you.
"Magnus?" Tessa walk over to the warlock quietly and lay a comforting hand on his arm. "Why don't we sit down and talk?" she smiles softly and lead him to the sofa, which happened to be completely grey today.
Alec stare at his grey comforter and mourns the emptiness. Sometimes if Alec is too sore from either practice or hunting to go to magnus' place, Magnus would come in the Institute and spend time with him there. Most often than not, they end up cuddling on the bed with Alec's head resting on his boyfriend's shoulders lightly. Now it's nothing more than a cold empty bed for Alec to pour his misery in.
