Chapter Four: Scorpius Malfoy

YEAR ONE

My name is Scorpius Malfoy and I'd really appreciate it if you'd stop asking me if I was in love with Rose Weasley. It's quite annoying, actually.

To say that Rose and I became good friends was an understatement and an overstatement all the same. We bickered constantly; a day would not go by when we weren't fighting. But we were also closer than ever.

I'm not quite sure that our friends got our connection, but Albus hinted at it one day.

"So, mate," he had said. "You and my cousin."

"What are you talking about, Al?"

"Well, I'm not stupid," he said, smirking. "You hang out with her more than you do me."

"She likes studying. I like studying. It's easier with a friend."

"And you like her," he ventured.

"No way!" I said. I wasn't even exactly sure what I felt, but that didn't matter. "Besides, we fight way too much. And she probably actually hates me. In fact, I would say we are frenemies." Rose taught me that muggle term. Indeed, it described our relationship well.

Albus shrugged. "You've got seven years, mate." He started to walk away, because we usually parted here so I could meet Rose at the library.

"Seven years for what?" I called after him.

He never answered. Seven years for what?

I decided not to let it bother me. Nevertheless, when I saw Rose in our usual spot, I couldn't help but wonder if I was blushing.

"I have an announcement!" Rose spoke up to our small group at supper. Alice, Albus and I all looked to her. "Well?" I said. "Get on with it."

Rose smirked at me. "Patience, young grasshopper." Alice snickered.

"Christmas break is coming up," she said slowly. "And my parents just got my family tickets to go see a professional Quidditch game!"

She was so excited, although I've seen plenty. It must have been nice, though, to spend time with your parents like that.

"I thought they were sold out!" Albus protested. Albus has also been to plenty, seeing how his mum is a professional player.

"They are now," Rose said smugly. "Apparently, my parents have been planning this for months."

"Well then," Albus said glumly.

"I wouldn't worry about it, Al," Alice spoke and smiled at him. "You can always come to my house sometime during the break. My mum's got her old brooms in the shed!"

I just smiled and continued eating. At times like this, it's very satisfying to have great friends.

Later on in the common room, I was reading by myself on a comfy couch. I thought I was alone, because it had seemed everyone went up to sleep, but I jumped when I heard a voice from behind me.

"Can't sleep?" It was Rose. She came around the couch and sat next to me.

I shrugged.

"What's the matter?" She said, looking at me.

"Nothing," I hesitated. "It's just that, I'm glad all of you will have loads of fun over the break."

"Won't you, too?"

"Well," I closed my book. "I suppose I could visit the library every day, but there won't be much—"

"Wait," she interrupted. "You're staying here?"

"My parents have decided that they want to go on vacation alone this year," I said.

"Hey, it's okay, we're having a Christmas party, maybe you can come to that—"

"I don't think that would be the best idea, considering the tensions between our families. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to go. I'll just miss you." I said, and quickly corrected myself. "All of you, I'll miss all of you."

She looked at me. For a moment I wondered if it was possible to count the freckles on her face. Probably not.

"Well, we can't have that. I'll just owl mum and dad, and have them give my ticket to someone else."

"What?" I asked, confused.

"Friends don't let friends be completely bored over Christmas break, now do they?" Rose said, smiling. "We are friends, aren't we?"

"You don't have to give up your break for me."

"Oh, don't flatter yourself, Malfoy," she grinned. "Besides, who wants to sit at a game in the freezing cold? Now, mum will be sure to send me all sorts of sweets and we won't have to worry about Hugo stealing them all. It will be paradise! Who needs a Christmas party when you can have the whole Gryffindor common room to yourself, anyway? I'll have my comfy chair here to accompany me," she reached over and patted an old recliner that she quite liked.

"If you're doing this out of pity, Rose Weasley, I swear I'll—"

"It's not out of pity," she interrupted. "I want to stay, Scorp."

My face probably lit up like a boy who got everything he wanted for Christmas. Considering my parents messed this year up, circumstances say I probably will. It was never really fun at home, anyway. Without thinking much of it I leaned forward and wrapped Rose Weasley in a hug. She hugged me back, and after a few moments pulled away laughing.

"If you'll excuse me," she said, smiling. "I have an owl to send."

-o-o-o-o-o-o-

"She's seriously staying?" Albus said as we walked down the hall. "She must seriously fancy you, Scorpius. Rose loves Quidditch. Probably more than me."

"She doesn't fancy me," I argued. "She is just being a good friend. Plus, she's probably going to prank me the whole time."

Albus shrugged. "I wonder how long it will take for the two of you to realize it."

I smirked. "You're awfully persistent, you know that? I will never fancy Rose Weasley. In fact, I'm not too fond of redheads." It was true, in fact, except it only applied to every redhead other than the one I met on the train that day. I actually quite like her curls.

"I'm sure she wasn't too fond of Malfoys before she met you, mate."

"Whatever, Al. We're going to be late to class."

"Actually," he said. "Alice got a pass for her and me to work on a project in the common room. The cup thing that McGonagall wanted us to do. I suppose she trusts us more than she trusts you and Rose, because she mentioned to not speak a word about it to either of you."

"That's probably due to the fact that instead of changing it to a dove, Rose changed it to a poisonous spider to scare me."

"Bloody brilliant," Albus laughed, and we parted ways.

Maybe I was wrong, and maybe Albus was right, but I couldn't seem to decide which side I actually wanted to be true.

That could be a problem.

Thanks for reading, everyone! Last time the poll was Hermione Granger OR Ginny Weasley. I would have to say that while they are both fantastic characters, I've been with Hermione since the absolute start. But don't get me wrong, they are both very awesome!

Poll:

Scorpius/Rose

OR

Draco/Hermione

Let me know in the comments. Rate & Review! I read all of them!
