Nosy Much?
"Mr. Black, I believe we left off where Miss Vandor transferred to Hogwarts." Said Professor McGonagall. They were back in her office for another session.
"Yes I believe we did Professor." Said Sirius tiredly. "I'd pretty much given up hope of seeing her and had almost forgotten about her until the day I boarded the Hogwarts Express…"
Sirius was at Platform 9 ¾ alone, as always. He'd ditched his house a few weeks ago, for the first time in ages he'd seen Regulus but he saw that he was enjoying talking to his little evil Slytherin buddies. He watched the hustle and bustle of the platform, new students and returning ones and felt a stab of nostalgia. He was starting his last year at Hogwarts, this would be the final time he would be boarding the Hogwarts express to school. He never truly felt this sentimental but this had been his real home for the past 7 years, it had been his safe house. The idea that he wouldn't see it after this school year made him feel a little more than a bit emotional. Shaking himself out of his reverie he hoisted his luggage and boarded the train. He walked through the aisles searching for the familiar faces of James, Remus and Peter. He finally spotted a mass of black messy hair and grinned to himself, that had to be James. He jogged towards them dragging his things along. They noticed him and smiled widely.
"Padfoot!" shouted James. "Come on! We've found a compartment!"
They led him in and sat down, laughing and exchanging stories about their summer. James shot up and rummaged in his bag for something excitedly. "Look! I'm Head Boy!" he exclaimed holding up a shiny gold badge. Sirius' and Remus' mouths dropped open.
"Has Dumbledore gone mad?" Remus asked taking the badge and inspecting it.
"Thanks Remus." Said James sarcastically. "I see that you have a lot of faith in me."
They were in the middle of badge inspection when someone knocked on the compartment door. Giving each other quizzical glances Remus stood up and opened the door. And surprise, surprise there stood Grace Vandor. She looked extremely nervous and kept on taking one of her bracelets on and off. She was just as beautiful though, if possible even more. Her brown hair was pulled back into a ponytail and her eyes were twinkling in anticipation. She smiled nervously at Remus.
"Is Sirius there?" she asked timidly.
You must realize that none of these boys had ever had a girl so innocently beautiful come knock at their door and ask for Sirius, the resident Hogwarts bad boy. So obviously, they were shell-shocked. Remus nodded mutely and stood aside so she could come in, James' eyes were wide with surprise, Peter stopped shoving food down his throat and Sirius was grinning like a loon. She walked into the middle of the compartment smiled shyly.
"Hello Sirius."
"Hey!" he said enthusiastically. Then he turned to his friends haughtily. "This is Grace Vandor, remember the girl I told you about? The one you thought didn't exist!"
James and Remus flushed red. "How did you expect us to believe you? Sirius Black come into contact with a decent girl? It was absurd." Exclaimed Remus hotly but then turned to Grace with a smile. "It's nice to finally meet you Grace. My name is Remus Lupin."
Grace smiled brightly. "It's a pleasure to meet you Remus. Sirius spoke about you quite a bit the one time that we met."
"Did he speak about me too?" asked James eagerly, but then became embarrassed. "Sorry, my name is James Potter. It's great to meet you Grace."
Grace laughed and Sirius made her space to sit, she was squished between him and James. "Nice to meet you too James, and yes Sirius spoke about you quite a lot too." She looked at Peter a little apprehensively. "And you are?"
"Peter Pettigrew." Said Peter through a mouthful of food. "Nice to meet you." She nodded warily and turned back to the slightly more civilized boys. She noticed the shiny badge.
"Oh, what's that for?" she asked curiously. James smiled and held up the badge.
"Oh this? This is the Head Boy Badge." He said proudly.
"Congratulations, I'm sure you deserve it." She said pleasantly. James almost burst with pride. He put an arm around her shoulder.
"I like you already Grace Vandor." He said kindly. Grace and all the boys laughed at this and Sirius acted mock offended and put his arm around Grace too. They became fast friends and began to heatedly discuss Quidditch, something the Marauders had never seen such a gentile girl do with such fervour and passion. They were in the middle of a heated debate about whether the Holy Head Harpies would win the season or not when an angry red head burst in through the door.
"Potter!" she screeched. James winced and turned around putting on a large smile.
"Ah my Lilyflower. Looking as radiant as ever. I wonder how I survived the summer without you." He said like a love struck fool.
"Potter is it true?" she demanded angrily.
"That I'm in love with you? Yes, it's quite true Lilyflower. I've been saying it for-"
"NO! That you've become Head Boy!"
"Oh. Yes that's true as well." He said nonchalantly.
"Has Dumbledore lost his mind?" she shrieked.
"Why is everyone saying that? Is it that surprising that I'm Head Boy?" he exclaimed. "I mean, Grace thought I deserved it!"
"Grace just met you mate. And besides, she's too kind to insult you." Said Sirius humorously.
Grace looked down as smiled embarrassedly. "I'm not that nice Sirius. You don't know me that well either, may I remind you we've only met twice including today."
At mention of another girl Lily looked at Grace and immediately the fire from her eyes vanished and was replaced by a look of kindness. "I'm Lily Evans." She said gently. "Are you a new student?"
"Yes, I'm Grace Vandor."
"Where did you transfer from?"
"Beauxbatons."
"Oh that's a lovely school!" then as if just noticing the boys she gasped. "What are you doing here sitting with the boys?" she exclaimed. "Come on, sit with us! I'll introduce you to all my friends!"
She dragged Grace away despite all the protests from the boys of how they "had her first" and how she should "stop stealing our friends!"
"Sirius." Said Lily interrupting the story. "Can I tell this part?" Sirius nodded, thankful that he didn't have to talk for a while.
"It was a well known fact that everyone who met Grace loved her, and it was no different for me and my friends. We welcomed her into our group immediately and she proved to be one of the best friends I ever had…"
Lily pulled Grace along still silently fuming about Potter being Head Boy. She supposed she'd have to come back in a few minutes to their compartment to remind him about the meetings, he'd be too daft to remember them anyway. She led Grace into a compartment full of girls Lily's age. They all looked friendly enough, just a little puzzled by Grace's appearance.
"Girls, this is Grace Vandor."
There was a chorus of pleasant hellos and introductions.
"I'm Marlene McKinnon." Said a girl with dark brown hair and piercing blue eyes.
"I'm Emmeline Vance." Said a girl with black hair and what seemed to be violet eyes.
"And I'm Alice Perry." Said a girl with blonde hair and brown eyes.
"Hello." Said Grace nervously. "Nice to meet you all."
The girls and Grace also became fast friends and Lily was annoyed when it was time for the Prefects meeting. "I'll be back soon guys, have to go tell Potter that we have a Prefect meeting." She said huffily.
"Why don't you just let him get into trouble?" asked a amused Marlene.
"I c-can't do that Marlene!" spluttered Lily going red.
"Are you sure?" asked Emmeline humorously. "That didn't stop you from getting Rosier sacked when he was a Prefect."
"Rosier is a Slytherin." Said Lily heatedly; her face now matched her face. "Plus he deserved it."
"Rosier may be a Slytherin," began Alice mischievously, "but Potter is a pranking prat. Potter deserves it just as much as Rosier did."
"Admit it!" cried Marlene jumping up. "You have feelings for him! You don't want him to get into trouble!" she sat back down triumphantly.
"I-I-I… You're all mad!" Lily cried and she turned on her heel and sped out of the compartment. All the girls began to laugh, including Grace.
"… Grace was our best friend. Those were good times." Finished Lily reminiscently.
Sirius couldn't bear it anymore; he stood up abruptly startling everyone. "It's late, I think I'll be going now Professor."
Professor McGonagall stood up as well and checked her watch. "Yes, I suppose you should Mr. Black. Good night."
The others stood up slowly and Sirius was halfway out the door when Professor McGonagall said quietly, "When's the funeral?"
Sirius' heart stopped beating. After a moments pause he finally choked out "Sunday."
"I'll talk to Professor Dumbledore about it." Said Professor McGonagall kindly.
Sirius turned around with a vacant expression. "Thanks." And he walked away. James, Remus and Lily started towards Gryffindor but then stopped when they saw Sirius wasn't following them.
"Come on then, Sirius. You heard what Professor McGonagall said."
"You guys go on, I want to walk around for a while. Figure some things out."
"Okay then Padfoot, see you in a while." Said James uncertainly.
Sirius nodded and walked in the opposite direction, with no apparent destination he meandered through the hallways and corridors. He finally decided to sit down in a deserted place.
He had to think things through.
How did everything happen so fast?
"Sirius! Sirius you have to listen to me!" Grace was running towards him and Sirius smiled at her but noticed that she was worried. She almost ran into him but he caught her effortlessly and looked into her eyes with concern.
"What's the matter Grace? What's happened?"
Tears were brimming in her blue/green eyes and she looked she was going to cry any moment.
"It's happening." She said fearfully. "It's happening Sirius."
"Black, what is going on?" growled a voice. Sirius looked up and saw Amelia Ray scowling at him.
"Nothing Ray. I'm sitting as you can plainly see." He said expressionlessly.
"Why are you sitting?" she demanded.
"Why are you asking me?" he challenged.
"I am a prefect Black. It is my duty to question people doing" she gave Sirius a withering glare, "strange things."
"Jeez Ray, I'm sitting, I'm not smoking weed!"
"Yes but you're sitting in the middle of a deserted passage, way after curfew." She said impatiently. "Now tell me why you're sitting!"
"I don't know Ray, why are you standing?" he sighed. "You know what never mind, I'm leaving." He got up and dusted his pants, walking away.
"Black!" she said angrily. "Come back here!"
"Good bye Ray." He called over his shoulder. Halfway to Gryffindor Tower, Sirius inwardly groaned as he heard Ray running towards him.
"Black," she panted, "stop right there!"
He stopped. "Ray, go away, I'm going to bed. You're a prefect Ray; go sniff out some people snogging in broom cupboards. Just. Leave. Me. Alone."
"Just tell me why you were sitting down and I'll leave you alone!" she whispered furiously.
"Ray, for the last time, leave me-"
The sound of footsteps stopped him midsentence. Ray was about to speak again but Sirius held a finger to his lips. A figure walked out from the shadows, a figure familiar to Sirius.
"Regulus."
"I think it's time we talked brother."
