Author's Note:
So I checked the poll this morning and so far Doomed World is in the lead so I decided to go ahead and update it since I'm in a writing mood.
I hope that this chapter will be worth the wait and I'll try to make it was long as possible!
I can't remember if there were any OCs for this particular story but I'm going to search through my messages and such to see if there were, for now I'll just be focusing on the chipmunks and the chipettes.
Enjoy!
Alvin blinks slowly, staring into the blazing orb blue eyes, he finally snaps out of his trance like state when he hears the doorknob jiggling.
"Shh," he hushes hoping into the containment unit, the chipette opens her mouth about to protest but he quickly clamps a paw over her mouth as he lowers the lid, plunging the two rodents into darkness.
The chipette licks his paw and immediately regrets it, his skin tasted like blood, oil, and dirt, she wrinkles up her nose and tries to pull away but he wasn't having it and kept his paw firmly clasped over her mouth.
The faint click of shoes against concrete draws Alvin's attention to a man heading their way, followed by another who seemed to be a bit younger and smaller, his ears twitch as his eyes stare through a small crack in the surface of the container.
"She still hasn't awoken, I knew we shouldn't have funded this program, it's useless!" The chipette flinches as the man hits the lid of the container sending a loud echoing ring throughout the small enclosure, Alvin moves his paws up to her ears as his own ring, he grits his teeth as it fades away and the chipette shoves his paws off her in annoyance.
"Leo, you know as well that I do that we can't pull the plug on this, we've come so far and we've made really good progress. So she hasn't woken up yet, maybe now isn't the time for her to awaken and save us, maybe we won't even be around when she awakes," Alvin glances at the frowning chipette at his side, her ears were perked up and her eyebrows were knit together as she listened to the conversation.
"I don't want to do this anymore Al, its straining and you know that. Hoping one day humanity could be saved, by a rodent! Do you really believe she'd be able to help? She's a chipmunk for crying out loud!" Leo's voice reaches their ears again, dulled by the metal between them.
"You need a drink,"
The other man must've nodded because their footsteps begin to fade away, heading in the direction of the door; Alvin listens intently as he hears the faint click of the lock sliding into place.
"Answer me," his gaze flickers to the chipette briefly before he lifts the lid up, "Answer what?" he asks forgetting her original question.
"Who are you!?" she demands standing to her paws, he could tell she was weak from all the sleeping that she had done, her leg's trembled yet she held herself up with her chin raised stubbornly.
"Alvin," he answers blandly as he hops down onto the floor, he looks up at the chipette and holds out a paw, she huffs, "I can get down, it's not that big of a jump," she says as she crouches down on the edge of the container, Alvin watches with mild interest as he lowers his paw down to his side.
She hops down and stumbles, her legs weak from misuse, she stumbles forward and into something solid and warm, she looks up sucking in a sharp breath as two golden orbs peer down at her.
She flushes and pushes him away, "See? I made it," she grumbles hoping the color in her cheeks would fade, the chipmunk, Alvin, tilts his head watching her with an alarming intensity.
"What?" she snaps annoyed, he blinks and glances at the container briefly, "What's your name?" he asks his eyes returning to her.
"Brittany," she answers dusting off her skirt as she looks around, it was pretty much pitch black in here save for a single dim light flickering by the door, she squints, barely making out dark forms covering the floor.
"Where are we?" Brittany questions, the munk didn't seem like a threat, he seemed just as confused as she was and his eyes sort of freaked her out, he was always staring at her as if she'd disappear if he didn't have his eyes on her.
"The basement of the facility," Alvin answers as he starts walking towards the door, he fades from her view, swallowed up by the shadows.
"W-wait!" Brittany scrambles after him, terrified of being alone in a place she's never been before, she didn't remember signing up for this program to be transported to an unknown location, and where were her sisters? They were promised they'd be frozen together and be put together; the munk didn't act as if there were more containers down here.
Her hind paw catches on a wire and she stumbles forward with a startled squeak, firm warm arms wrap around her halting her fall, Brittany looks up through her bangs to stare into his unnerving eyes once again, "T-thanks," she mutters pushing him away lightly.
Alvin nods and peers around, "You can't see in the dark?" he asks looking back at her with a slightly smug grin, Brittany frowns and crosses her arms over her chest, he's obviously gotten over his shock now.
"No, and I suppose you can huh?" she asks narrowing her eyes, the munk's grin widens his eyes sparking with amusement, "I can actually, part of my programming," he hums starting off towards the door again.
Brittany hurries after him confused, "Programming?" she questions as she follows his path through the maze of junk, "I'm not a regular chipmunk, most animals here aren't exactly animals anymore," he explains, although she couldn't see his face she could tell from the tone of his voice that the grin was gone.
"Most animals…..what happened?" she asks quietly, Alvin doesn't respond, instead he pushes open the door and looks back at her, "Go on," he gestures to it his expression blank as she slides past him and into the dimly lit hallway.
"So you're not going to tell me, is that it?" the chipette narrows her eyes as she turns back to the munk annoyed, her eyes widen as he slides the door back into place, she could see his skin rippling beneath his fur as he effortlessly closes it behind them.
"I was going to wait, but since you're so persistent I guess I could fill you in a on a few details, after you tell me why you were frozen down there," Alvin turns to face her, keeping his face blank he stares at her intently, most humans or animals unaffected or untouched by the scientists here hate it when he or the other robots stare at them, it was 'unnerving' apparently.
Brittany shifts from paw to paw, the movement not going unnoticed by the chipmunk, "My sister's and I signed up for a program after the war was declared to begin, we would be frozen and unthawed when the war was over, it was simple, the scientists needed test subjects and we wanted to live. We weren't the only one's either, thousands of people showed up," Alvin's ears twitch and he frowns.
"Thousands? What do you mean thousands?"
"Humans, and animals, plants too," Brittany explains, closing her eyes as she tries to remember the day she fell asleep and stayed asleep, her eyes snap open, "What year is it?" she asks watching as his gaze flickers to her briefly then returns to the floor as he thinks.
"What year is it!?" she repeats louder, he grumbles softly and looks up at her, "2066," he answers watching as the color seems to drain out of her fur, her eyes widening till it looked as if they'd pop out.
He tilts his head confused as she stammers to say something, "W-we've been frozen….for 50 years!" Alvin jumps in surprise as she suddenly turns and bolts the other way, heading towards the main room of the Vault.
"H-Hey wait don't go that way!" Alvin races after her, easily catching up, he reaches out to grab her tail just as something crashes into him sending him crashing into the metal surface of the walls, "Ow!" he groans rubbing his forehead where a small gash had formed.
"Alvin! Thank goodness," Simon grasps his older brother's paw and hauls him to his feet, "Something's attacking the Vault," he explains watching as panic spreads across his older brother's face.
Simon frowns, Alvin never looked this worried, attacks were usually hungry animals looking for food; Alvin looked as if he just told him that Theodore ate all the food in the fridge, "I'll be back," Alvin takes off down the hall leaving behind his confused sibling.
Brittany hadn't gotten far really, she had tried to go through the front door as people rushed around her, some in a panic and other's heading down another hallway with what looked like glowing guns, the chipette was intent on getting to the door when the rotten stench of decay reaches her nose.
She coughs and halt in her tracks covering her nose with a paw as the room seems to empty entirely, now she could clearly see the source of the foul odor, it looked as if it was once a powerful animal, now the creature was deduced to skin and bones.
The bear was hunched over the fresh corpse of a man who had been standing guard at the door when it had come out of nowhere; the creature's flesh was rotting some places where metal protruded from its skin its muzzle was stained a dark brown and blood dripped from its mouth as it swings its head around.
A scream rips from her throat and Brittany scrambles back in fear, two empty sockets peer at her; dried blood caked around the holes, liquid dripped down its cheeks as the bear roars, sending saliva tinted pink with blood flying.
It lumbers towards her at a startling pace, Brittany's body tenses up as fear grips her, she couldn't even close her eyes as the bear raises a massive paw and brings it down, a red blur smashes into the skull of the creature, sending it soaring away into the wall.
Brittany gasps for breath as a paw clamps down on her shoulder, she yelps and whirls around meeting a pair of dark sea blue eyes behind a pair of black glasses, "Hurry, it might break free," she nods numbly as the dark furred munk helps her to her paws and leads her away.
"Don't look back," his warning was too late, her gaze falls upon the bear's twitching body, Alvin stands over it, blades protruding from his lower arms, blood drips from the tips as he turns to meet her gaze, she flinches her heart hammering faster as she whips her head around letting the chipmunk lead her on as she closes her eyes tightly, the image pulsing in her mind.
Twin pools of gold filled with so much pain, so much confusion that it scared her.
They never asked for this, none of them did.
They were victims of man's thirst for knowledge, for things they couldn't accomplish without the aid of their animal test subjects.
It killed them slowly on the inside, she realized, to kill off the animals who could no longer withstand the pain, they were holding on to the last threads of humanity within them but she knew, she knew that they were slowly slipping.
They were becoming animals.
Not as long as I had hoped but this was a good start for me to get back into the flow, I'm hoping to update again really soon.
Many of you wanted Doomed World to be continued and I was curious as to know why, I haven't gotten far in the story yet most of you seem to enjoy it which makes me happy, keep enjoying and reading and I'll try to get this story finished.
Thanks for reading!
