1997

"What are you drawing?" Simon asked Eric trying to catch a glimpse at his friends drawing. The assignment was simple, draw what you wanted to be when you grow up. Everyone else was drawing princesses, doctors, mad scientists, veterinarians, rock stars and other things you'd expect from a bunch of six year olds. Eric looked up from his work. " A rock star." he said as if it was obvious to the whole world that he was distin to be a rock star " A Vampire rock star." he added as if that made more sense. Simon rolled his eyes at this and then said, "Vampires don't exist, more importantly vampire rock stars don't exist." Eric narrowed his eyes at this and stopped talking to him. Simon stared at his blank page. He had no idea what he wanted to be when he grew up. He looked around the room, maybe there was someone else who felt the same way. He sighed and went back to looking at the blank page.

"Excuse me?" He looked up, a girl with curly red pigtails and bright green eyes stood next to him. She was short, shorter than the other children in their class. she was looking at him through his soul with with those eyes. "Excuse me?" she said again. " Is anyone sitting here?" She asked gesturing to the empty chair next to him. Was someone sitting there? If there was he didn't care. " N-no, nobody." he said. " okay then." she said sitting down and looking at her paper, hers was also blank. "I'm Simon by the way and this…" he said glancing at Eric " Is Eric." She smiled " Well nice to meet you Simon… and Eric. I'm Clarissa, but you can call me Clary." she said taking a colored pencil from the plastic bucket in the middle of the table.

He continued to look at the page. What did he want to be? That question seemed impossible to answer. He could be anything he wanted to be, he just needed to think? He could be a police officer, or a soldier, maybe a farmer. He looked at Clary who was already drawing. "What do you want to be?" He said leaning over her to see what she was drawing. She looked up from her page to him and smiled once more. "An artist. My mom's an artist." He looked at her page, it was of her red curls and all covered in paint and standing in front of a framed painting, It was good compared to the other students drawings. " What do you want to be?" she directed his own question back at him. " I don't know." he said "What's your favorite movie?" she asked. "Star Wars, why?" She reached for another pencil. "Is that the one where the princess Leia or whatever kisses her brother?" She asked, Simon was wondering where she was going this but he couldn't help but answer . " Yes, but they didn't know they were siblings till later." he stated. "Okay fair enough. Who's your favorite character?" "Wait, What does this have to do with what I want to be?" he asked. She put her pencil down and turned to face him. " It has everything to do with what you want to be. The only reason we have favorite characters is because we want to be them, we want to go on their adventures, have what they have." Simon was shocked, he wasn't expecting someone his age to say something like that, the way she said it made it feel like she'd read it in a book, one of those big ones without the pictures. " I want to be a hero." He said and realized it was true. It probably was a stupid thing to say. Once again Clary surprised him for the second time since they'd met. " Then be a hero." " But what kind of hero?" She turned back in her seat and picked up her pencil. " I don't know. What kind of hero do you want to be?"
