Back to CB!
So...it's been a few days since me and Melanie started on our journey. More stuff had spontaneously appeared in my bag (mostly food and other survival supplies), so I wondered if perhaps 'A' had enchanted it or something...so I reached in, and was successfully able to pull out money, but no more than the usual 3000 that every player gets at the start of a Pokémon game. Tch. Anyways, right now, we were training.
"Okay, without your horns, Bite seems pretty impractical to use," I explained, as Melanie nodded slowly. "You can still use Iron Head because I noticed before that you can still use momentum to swing your horns around, but we still need an alternative to Bite. And, we need you to re-focus Flamethrower so you fire it from your actual mouth, not your horns."
"Wile..." Melanie muttered, rubbing her horns slightly. I sighed at this.
"I know, you're afraid of fire, but we're going to need you to fire other moves you'd normally use your horns for without said horns as well. Like if you learn Solar Beam, or Dark Pulse." Seeing the Deceiver Pokémon's downtrodden look, I sighed again. "Alright, I suppose we can put that aside for now. For now, let's work on a new move. Namely, Power-Up Punch." Melanie brightened up a bit at this.
"Wi~le maw!" She agreed. So, I pulled out my phone and found another app 'A' (who I'm feeling reasonably sure is Arceus, after all the stuff he's pulled) had sent me, which was basically a big giant list of all moves ever and how to teach them. Excluding, of course, things like Judgement and Dragon's Ascent (they were listed, but under 'how to teach' all that was written was 'What makes you think I'd actually tell you?'). So, we started working on Power-Up Punch. I read the 'how to teach' section...hmm...
"Okay, in order to use Power-Up Punch, you need to focus your power into one of your fists. You need to punch the target extremely hard, which in turn makes you fists harder, which in turn increases your overall attack," I explained. I'm not sure how making her fists harder will make Iron Head do more damage, but whatever. This is Pokémon, where logic is thrown out the window and replaced by insanity. Melanie nodded and closed her eyes for a few seconds, trying to focus her power into her fists. Soon enough, her left fist started glowing with an orange aura, and she punched a nearby tree...and then recoiled in pain.
"Maw...wile maw mawile maw!" She shouted, before stubbornly beginning to punch the tree with her glowing fist again. I wonder what she just said...? We really need a way to make communications easier...I watched as Melanie continued punching the tree, and it cracked slightly. Wait...
"Mel...isn't punching trees in this place generally-" I was interrupted as the tree fell over, and a swarm of Beedrill angrily flew out. "...a bad idea?" There was a pause for about 2.37 seconds. "RUN!"
"Wile mawile!" Melanie agreed, as we quickly ran in the opposite direction (thankfully, I was able to grab my backpack on the way, and it spontaneously became lighter, thus making that much easier).
"Y'know, we might be able to resolve this much easier if you could use Flamethrower!"
"Mawile!"
We continued running for our lives for a few minutes, before I was careless and tripped.
"Shit!" I cursed. Melanie immediately turned around and ran towards me, though the Beedrill steadily grew closer. Melanie, running on instinct, immediately punched the ground, causing rocks to pop up in a cage-like formation around the Beedrill, trapping them.
"Maw...?" She pondered, wondering what the heck just happened.
"That was Rock Tomb!" I gasped as I got up. "You just learned Rock Tomb!" Our moment of peace was short-lived, though, as some of the Beedrill that were in the back of the group and thus didn't get caught flew around the cage. "Quick! Do it again!"
"Wi~le maw!" She punched the ground again...and this time, nothing happened.
"Well, crap." Well, back to plan A then, which is... "RUN! AGAIN!" We continued running as the...I didn't catch the exact number, but somewhere around five remaining Beedrill continued chasing us. I then noticed a nearby tree full of a Pokémon I recognized as Pineco. What Pineco were doing in Kanto, I have no idea, but I'll take whatever help I can get! "Hurry! Hit that tree with an Iron Head!"
"Wile maw!" She swung her horns around as they started glowing with a metallic light, slamming into the tree, as the Pineco fell, landing on the Beedrill, and exploding as they did, until only one Beedrill was left.
"Alright! If only one Beedrill is left, we can take it!" I confidently declared, as Melanie got into a fighting stance. "Play Rough!"
"Wi~le maw!" Melanie declared...hmm. She says that with that same particular tone a lot...I wonder if it's meant to be a catchphrase or something. Anyways, she lunged at the Beedrill, a dust cloud springing up as she did, and I heard several slamming noises. The dust cloud cleared, and the Beedrill was on the ground, panting, and using one of it's spike-legs to hold itself up. I quickly grabbed an empty Pokéball and hurled it at the exhausted Bug-type. It bounced off and opened up, sucking the Bug in, before falling on the ground.
It shook once.
It shook twice.
It shook thrice.
And then...with a popping noise, it burst from the ball.
"Shoot! And it was so close, too!" I said. Mel shot me glance that said 'really?' The Beedrill took this chance to fire a Poison Sting attack. Of course, being a Steel-type, in didn't bother Mel all that much. I guess this Beedrill doesn't know much about types. But then it used...Roost!? That's a Move Tutor attack for Beedrill! How did it get that in the wild!? I didn't have much time to ponder that though, as after healing itself, it zoomed in with a Twineedle attack. "Iron Head!"
"Wile!" Melanie jumped above the Beedrill, and slammed it with her horns, causing it to go flying.
"Power-Up Punch!" Melanie's fist began glowing orange, as she punched the Beedrill into the ground, unconscious. Ah, the beauty of anime logic, where you can throw the Pokéball even if the enemy has fainted, which is what I just did.
It shook once.
It shook twice.
It shook thrice.
*PING!*
...and with that pinging noise and a few sparkles, I have now made my first capture! Me and Mel both simultaneously sighed in relief.
"Alright! We caught Beedrill!" I cheered, as Melanie nodded enthusiastically, before picking up the ball and bringing it to me. I used my Pokédex app to scan it.
"Beedrill, the Poison Bee Pokémon, and the evolved form of Kakuna. When disturbed, it attacks in swarms. Each Beedrill has three stingers used to inject a powerful poison. This Beedrill is male, its ability is Swarm, and it knows the following moves: Twineedle, Poison Sting, Roost, and Pursuit." Pursuit, huh? That could be useful. I brought it out of it's Pokéball, as it shook off the dizziness. "Well, welcome to the team...uh...darn, what's a good nickname...?" I thought for a few seconds...darn, I'm not feeling very creative right now...Y'know what, I'll just stick with..."Spear." Both my recently caught ally and my Starter gave me a 'really? That's the best you could come up with?' look. "Yeah, not very creative, but it's the best I've got." At least they don't know their Japanese names, so they can't gauge exactly how uncreative that name is. "So, as I was saying, welcome to the team, Spear!" I stuck out my hand. Spear stared at it for a few seconds, before shrugging and holding out one of his spikes, and we shook hands...er...whatever.
"Wile!" I looked and saw that Melanie was pointing at the other Beedrill that were unconscious on the ground.
"Er, yeah, we should probably get out of here before they wake up," I agreed, as the three of us ran (or in Spear's case, flew) to find a safe place to train.
...Anyways, after Spear, Melanie, and I found a suitable training ground, a field with a few berry and fruit trees lining it and rocks all over, I...was about to train, but then I remembered Spear and Mel were probably exhausted, so...
"Why don't we take a lunch break?" I suggested.
"Mawile!"
"Supi!" Hearing my Pokémon's agreement, I looked into my backpack (which had grown heavier), and found tables and dining utensils, and food...I took out the tables, but seeing the Berry and fruit trees around, I decided 'screw this, I'll at least feed myself.' I closed up the backpack and went towards the trees, but then remembered the adventure we just escaped from.
"Say, Spear, are any more of your kind in these Berry trees?" I asked. Spear flew over to the trees, and inspected them carefully, before shouting a few words I couldn't understand. He then turned to me.
"Spi-Spi!" He shook his head, indicating that there were no Beedrill these trees. I know that it's just its Japanese voice, since Beedrill's Japanese name is Spear, but it can still be a bit strange to hear a nicknamed Pokémon saying its nickname...oh well.
"Well then, let's eat!" I said, grabbing an apple off a nearby tree and taking a bite. Spear flew up and grabbed a nearby Pecha Berry and started eating. Mel reached for a nearby Rawst Berry tree, but couldn't reach the berries.
"Wile...Mawile...!" She muttered in frustration. I chuckled a bit and walked over, picking a Berry for her and handing it to her. She easily downed it in just a few bites. She reached for more, so I grabbed her some more, before packing some into the bag. Spear came over carrying some more assorted berries and fruits, dumping them into the bag. We finished off our lunch, before I explained our training regimen today.
"Okay, Melanie, we're going to try and figure out what went wrong with Rock Tomb before and fix it."
"Wi~le maw!"
"Spear, we're going to teach you a new move. I looked into moves you can learn, and I think you should learn Electroweb. It will help you deal with Flying-type Pokémon."
"Spi!"
"Okay, I'll get Spear started on how to learn Electroweb, and then we can start trying to figure out what went wrong with Rock Tomb, Mel." I pulled out my phone and checked the 'how to teach' section of Electroweb. "Hmm...Spear, can you recall using String Shot from when you were a Weedle? Because it says we'll need you to recall that before we can teach Electroweb."
"Spi..." Spear pondered for a moment, before sticking out a spike and managing to successfully shout out a silk-like thread.
"Huh. I guess String Shot is an easy move to relearn...wait..." I then noticed that the thread wasn't sticking to the rock Spear was shooting at. "Okay, you can shoot thread, you just can't make it stick like it should...well, I suppose we can work on the sticking part later. For Electroweb, you need to charge the static electricity your body's built up through that thread. After doing that a few times, you should be able to use your body's natural electricity to charge it, and shape it into a net-like pattern. Then, we can work on making it sticky."
"Spi!" Spear flew off to practice this, well I crouched down to talk to Melanie.
"Okay Mel, do you think you can try to do a Rock Tomb again?" Melanie nodded, before punching the ground again. Two small rocks popped up from the ground, but not big enough to be considered a Rock Tomb. "Hmm..." I pulled out my phone and turned on the camera, setting it to video mode. "Do it again. I'll record it this time." I switched on the recorder, and Melanie punched the ground with all her might, and a few tiny rocks popped up. I switched off the recording, then showed it to Melanie as I played it back. We watched it a few times, but not being a native to this world, I had no idea what was wrong. "Okay, I have no idea...what about you?"
"Wile...maw mawile maw mawile wile," she said.
"Okay...I have no idea what you just said," I admitted. "We really need a better way to communicate..."
"Maw..."
"EUREKA!"
Seeing Mel jump, I chuckled weakly. Right, cut back on the cut-ins.
"Sorry about that. But I've got an idea," I explained, pulling a notepad and a pencil out of my backpack. For once, this probably wasn't A's doing, because I always carry a few notepads and a few spare pencils in my backpack. That was it's intended purpose, after all. "I'm going to teach you how to write in the human language."
"Wi~le maw!" Yeah, the first thing I'm asking when/if I manage to teach her how to write is what her little catchphrase means.
"Okay, to start off..." I opened up the notepad and wrote the entire alphabet out. "...The basis of our language is this alphabet..." (A/N: I feel reasonably sure everybody reading this has passed Grade School, so I won't write in the full lesson). "...alright, now try practicing some simpler words for a while. I'm going to go check on Spear's progress."
"Wi~le maw!" Hearing the confirming catchphrase as Melanie tried to write stuff down on the notepad, I walked over to where Spear was working on Electroweb, continuing to shoot threads at rocks...oh, it looks like he managed to make it stick. I guess he's relearned String Shot, then.
"So...I see that you have relearned String Shot."
"Spi!" He confirmed, turning towards me and nodding.
"Have you worked on electrifying it?"
"Spi!" Spear pointed one of his spikes at the rock, and shot another thread, this one having a few sparks flying across it.
"Hmm...it looks like you're on the right track. You just need to get the net shape and the electricity flow better, and you'll have it down." I then turned to Melanie. "How are you doing with the writing?" She threw me the notepad, and I looked at it. I had no real way of telling if it was words or scribbles...well, if they were words, the handwriting was horrid. And that's coming from me!
"Maw..." she muttered.
"Yeah...to put it bluntly, we desperately need to work on your penmanship. And if that's coming from me, you know your writing is awful." I returned the notepad to her, and she stubbornly opened it up and began trying again. I turned back to Spear, who was making quick progress with the electrical threads, and was now trying to get it into a net shape. He eventually managed to split it into three separate strands of electrified thread, which flew clean around the rock, and into the nearby bushes.
"Gaaah!" I heard a feminine voice scream. A girl who appeared to be around my age (as in, my current physical age, not my actual age) popped out of the bush. She had long, white hair arranged into a braid, with a red streak in her bangs. She had green eyes, and was wearing a crimson t-shirt, orange shorts, and equally red sandals. "What the heck was that for!?"
"Sorry," I apologized, as Spear also gave a few apologetic cries. "Spear was practicing his Electroweb. I suppose he still needs to work on the control." Then I noticed something. "And pray tell, why were you in the bushes so close to our training ground?" The girl's attitude suddenly changed from angry to surprised, and then she suddenly sulked.
"Well, I noticed all the KO'd Beedrill (and the ones trapped in the Rock Tomb) and decided to look around, and I saw you training, and thought I'd watch for a bit..."
"Then it's your own fault for being hit by Spear's Electroweb," I noted. By my side, Spear and Mel both nodded in agreement. "Anyways, my name is Leo, and these are Spear..."
"Spi!"
"...and Melanie."
"Wi~le maw!"
"Well," the girl said, suddenly perking up. "My name's Krysta! Nice to meet ya!"
"So...why exactly are you here again?"
"Because I was curious."
"Why? I'm a rookie trainer who's literally only been on the road for about a week now. Unless you've been on the road even less..."
"Nah, I've been on the road for about six months now! It's just, you rarely see anyone this far out, since Zeal City is rather remote..." Then, what I said caught up with her. "A week!? How the heck did you manage to disable an entire Beedrill swarm after only a week? What did you do, start with a flippin' Moltres!?"
"No, I just got lucky when Mel here learned Rock Tomb, in addition to managing to find a tree filled with Pineco, and then we just beat down Spear here and caught him. Right now, we're training a bit before heading off towards Zeal City for a Gym Battle."
"Hmm...okay then!" Krysta decided. "I happen to be from Zeal City! I was heading back to visit anyways, so I'll take you along!"
"Eh...sure, why not?" I decided. "It'd be a bit lonely to travel by myself. Well, technically I've got my Pokémon with me, but you know what I mean."
"Yay!" Krysta shouted. "But first..." Oh dear. She's not about to... "I challenge you to a battle!"
"OBJECTION!"
Oops. I used a cut-in again. Oh well. Mel and Spear both jumped a bit, but Krysta didn't seem affected.
"Wha-? Why?"
"I have little to no experience is why. You'd destroy me in a heartbeat."
"I'll go easy on you! I promise!" She pleaded, though I'd already recalled Spear and started walking off with Mel.
"No means no."
"Come on, please...?" She was starting to follow me. Seriously, enough is enough!
"SILENCE!"
Anyways, after I had finally gotten Krysta to stop badgering me for a battle (in exchange, we promised to battle once we both had eight badges (incidentally, Krysta currently has 7; three badges I don't recognize, a Boulder Badge, a Volcano Badge, a Thunder Badge, and a Soul Badge). Anyways, it had been a few hours, so we set up camp for the night, and sent out all our Pokémon (granted, for me that's only Spear since Mel is an out-of-ball Pokémon). Krysta's team consisted of Lila the Larvesta (apparently her starter), Maggie the Magmar, Jackie the Hitmonchan, George the Graveler, Booster the Flareon (at least I'm not alone in my uncreativity), and an egg, which apparently came from her Magmar and her Hitmonchan.
"So, Krysta..." I said, deciding to start a conversation. She looked up from her meal.
"Hn?" She swallowed the food she was eating. "What is it?"
"You came from Zeal City, right? What's the Gym Leader like?" Suddenly, she tensed. Lila gave a very audible hiss, and the rest of her Pokémon all gave a low growl. Even the egg seemed to rattle a bit in its case. "...I take it there's some bad blood between you and Zeal City Gym Leader?"
"...You could say that," she muttered, her demeanor suddenly turning grim. "That stubborn, narrow-minded cold-hearted old geezer is a specialist in Ice-types. And he's also my grandpa."
"Hmm. Go on."
"You seem awfully unsurprised by this..."
"I honestly thought you were the Gym Leader before." Such would be cliché in the PokéVerse, after all.
"Hell no," she snapped. She then started looking apologetic and covered her mouth. "Er, sorry. It's just...you see, a long, long, long, long, long, long, long time ago, Zeal City was covered in ice, so it made sense for the trainers there to use Ice-types. Then, one day, the ice all melted."
"That seems rather anti-climatic."
"It was, according to the ancient texts my grandpa forced me to learn ever since I was born...literally! According to my dad, less than three minutes after I was born, he forcefully took me to the ancient tombs and started reading them to me," she huffed. "Anyways, because of that time when it was icy - which according to the text, was only about five years - my family has a tradition of being Ice-type trainers. Which my grandfather stubbornly refuses to allow anyone to break. My dad ran off to be a movie star, and although he eventually decided he did want to be an Ice-type trainer, that's all the way in Unova, and he hasn't told my grandpa, so ha!"
"Okay, and...?" Wait, movie star that became an Ice-type trainer in Unova... "Wait, are you saying your dad is Brycen!?"
"Yep! My dad is rather cool. Although he did eventually become an Ice trainer himself, he encouraged me to do whatever the hell I wanted! He's the one who sent me Lila's egg when I started my journey!" Lila jumped into her arms and snuggled up with her at this point. "Anyways, my grandpa, who everyone calls 'Old Man Icy', since nobody, including me, can remember his real name, is the Gym Leader. He's a stubborn old fogey who refuses to see thing any way other than 'the traditional way'. Which is why every Pokémon in my team can deal super-effective damage to Ice-types."
"...He sounds like an absolute...ugh...what word was I looking for...? Gah, never mind," I muttered. "Why are you going back if you hate him so much?"
"Because even though my grandpa is a stubborn old fogey and everyone in town knows it, everyone else in town is nice, and it wouldn't be fair of me not to visit. I'm hoping to slip in and out unnoticed by the geezer."
"And you think the townspeople will be okay with that...?"
"They were the past five times. Grandpa doesn't even know I've ever visited, in fact. The townspeople respect my grandpa, and they do like him, but even the people in his age group think he's being stubborn about the 'traditions', and are willing to help me out." She let out a sigh. "Well, enough talk about the old fogey. I need to release some pent-up aggression from thinking about that fool. Lila, come on!"
"Vesta!" her Larvesta roared (yes, you read that right, it roared. Not a very impressive roar, it being a tiny bug and all, but a roar nonetheless) in agreement, as Krysta recalled the rest of her Pokémon and picked up her egg, then ran off with Lila. I saw flames come from nearby a few minutes later.
"Don't start a forest fire!" I shouted at her.
"We won't! We do this all the time!" She shouted back. I shrugged and recalled Spear, before I noticed Melanie was gone. I looked around a bit and found her huddled up in my sleeping bag, flinching every time we heard one of Lila's bursts of flames.
"That's right, you're afraid of fire, aren't you...?" I realized. "I had almost forgotten. You seemed to be getting along well with Booster and Lila before..."
"Mawile maw..." Melanie whimpered. She pulled out a notepad I had given her and scribbled something, then handed it to me. It was still a bit hard to make out, but it was neater than her last attempt. It read: 'I not fear Fire Pokémon. I fear fire itself.'
"Hm. I'm impressed with your progress...it's still a bit rough - though I suppose that's to be expected since you only have three fingers on each hand - and there are a few grammar mistakes, but other than that, you're making good progress with writing...though your fear of flames is worrying, since we'll have to fight Fire Pokémon eventually, I suppose there's not much we can do about it now." I climbed into the sleeping bag. "We'll go at our own pace, okay?" Melanie nodded, and eventually faded into sleep, and I soon joined in...
...Is it scary that the sound of Krysta blowing stuff up is slightly comforting? Well, anyways, I drifted off to sleep...
...I woke up several hours later, and saw Mel was already up, and stretching, with Krysta nearby snoring, though not for long, as Mel had apparently had enough of her snoring and shook her awake.
"...Huh? Wha...? Oh..." She yawned. "Morning already...?"
"Yep, morning," I said, as Mel nodded. I pulled some berries out of my backpack and handed them to my partner.
"Say..." I heard Krysta start in a confused tone. I turned towards her and noticed she was glancing at Melanie, as the Deceiver Pokémon in question ate her berries. "Why do you keep Melanie here outside of her Pokéball?"
"Hmm...I just feel like it, I guess. And besides, research shows that a Pokémon kept out of its Pokéball forms a stronger bond with its trainer, and a stronger bond leads to better growth for the Pokémon," I explained, using my phone to try and find actual research into that (since my 'research' came from HGSS), and thankfully, I did...I bookmarked those pages for later. Speaking of which, that's another thing I found out: my phone can in fact still connect to the internet. Just not the internet of my homeworld, only this one. Anyways... "Of course, it's impractical to keep more than one Pokémon out at a time, which is why Spear stays inside his ball."
"Hmm..." Krysta said, seemingly pondering what I had said. "Alright then! Lila, come on out!" In a flash of light, her Larvesta came out onto the ground.
"Lar?" She asked, tilting her head to the side.
"How'd you like to stay outside your Pokéball from now on?" Krysta asked it, bending down to eye level. Lila chirped happily and jumped onto her trainer's shoulder, snuggling into her head.
"I'll take that as a yes," Krysta laughed. We then called out the rest of our Pokémon for breakfast, and after that, we were on the road again...until a random Oddish crossed our path, and collapsed in front of us.
"Wha-? Where'd that Oddish come from!?" I gasped, rushing over to it. It was panting weakly.
"I think I have some Super Potions in my bag. I'll get them out real quick!" Krysta volunteered, reaching into her bag and pulling out some Super Potions, and spraying the Oddish with them. I pulled out my Pokédex.
"Oddish, the Weed Pokémon. It's scientific name is 'Oddium wanderus'. It remains underground during the day, and is said to walk nearly 1,000 feet at night. This Oddish is Female." I suppose it didn't tell me the moves and ability because it's not my Pokémon...but what was it doing out here? And why is it so wounded? I got my answer when we heard two familiar (to me at least) voices laughing evilly…
"Ahahahahaha!" The voices laughed as two figures burst out of the bush. One was a woman with yellow hair, and the other was a man with green hair. Both were wearing black uniforms with a big red letter on the front...I'll give you three guesses what letter it was, and three more guesses who these people are.
"Wha-? You're...!" Krysta gasped, while I just groaned, seeing who they were.
"Prepare for trouble!"
"And make it double!"
"To infect the world with devastation!"
"To blight all peoples in every nation!"
"To denounce the goodness of truth and love!"
"To extend our wrath to the stars above!"
"Cassidy!"
"Butch!"
"We're Team Rocket, circling Earth all day and night!"
"So surrender now, or you'll surely lose the fight!"
"Team Rocket...of course," I muttered.
"That's right! And if you don't want trouble, you'll hand over that-"
"Lila, use Incinerate!" Krysta didn't give them a chance, as her Larvesta spewed a wave of fire from it's mouth, enveloping them in a pillar of flames. "Now's our chance! Let's go!"
"Uh, right!" I said, picking up the Oddish as we ran off. A little ways later, when we thought we were in the clear, we sat down and started treating the Oddish.
"Yeesh, they really did a number on this Oddish..." Krysta muttered. "But what would Team Rocket want with an Oddish? You can find them literally everywhere..."
"Well, for now we need to protect her from those Rocket goons, Cassidy and Bitch," I said. I know I said it wrong, but that was intentional. As was exactly how I said it wrong. Although that proved to be a mistake, when...
"IT'S BUTCH!" We heard a shout, as Butch suddenly came running towards us. What is this, Dinosaur King, where whenever you call a certain old lady 'Old Lady,' she comes running no matter how far away she is!? Cassidy soon came running after him, panting.
"Hah...hah...it's a good thing...you're so...sensitive about...your name..." she panted. "Otherwise...we never...would have found them..."
"What do you want with one little Oddish, anyway?" Krysta wondered, though I could tell by how her hand was inching closer to her Pokéballs, she didn't care for an answer, she was just distracting them while she brought out her Pokémon. "They're relatively common Pokémon."
"You're right. Oddish are relatively common," Cassidy admitted. "But those Oddish have the ability Chlorophyll. For some reason though, that Oddish has the ability Run Away instead! We want to figure out why this is, and how it affects its Evolutions!" So that Oddish has it's Hidden Ability, then? Huh. Cool. "And now that I think about it, Mawile is rather rare in this region, and I don't even know what that Pokémon is..." She gestured towards Melanie and Lila "...Enough talk! I'll go ahead and take those as well! Rhydon, go!" The grey dinosaur Pokémon popped out of it's PokéBall with a roar. When did Cassidy get a Rhydon? Well, whatever!
"Melanie, Power-Up Punch!" I shouted in response. I heard a Pokéball popping open next to me, and saw that Krysta had called out her Hitmonchan, Jackie.
"Jackie, Dynamic Punch!" Melanie and Jackie both slammed their fists into the Rhydon as hard as they could, a red light covering Melanie as she powered up, and the Dynamic Punch luckily managing to confuse Rhydon.
"Wi~le maw!"
"Chan!"
"Return!" Cassidy angrily shouted, as she returned her confused Pokémon to it's PokéBall.
"It's my turn then!" Butch shouted. "Go! Marowak!" Another new one...why the hell did they bring Ground-types to capture an Oddish? Well, I suppose against a lowly Oddish... "Use Outrage!"
"Uh-oh...that's a rather powerful attack..."
"Mel, defense," I said in a bored tone, much to everyone else's shock, as Mel confidently moved in front of everyone as Marowak charged with glowing red eyes.
"Are you crazy!? Even if she is a Steel-type, that Outrage will send her flying!"
"She's not just a Steel-type, you know," I pointed out, as Mel smirked. Marowak repeatedly tried to thwack her with it's bone, which was glowing with dragonic energy...only for it to phase right through her, as Melanie's body glowed pink for a bit. Marowak continued this, getting steadily more pissed as it saw that it's attack had no effect.
"Wha-!? How!?" Butch shouted.
"You see, Butch-"
"IT'S BIFF! Wait, never mind, you had it right the first time! Ignore what I said!"
"As I was saying..." I continued, rolling my eyes. "Mawile is also part of the recently discovered Fairy-type. Said type is immune to Dragon-type attacks, so you just confused your Pokémon for nothing." I gestured towards Marowak, which was now bashing it's head against a nearby tree, as Butch angrily recalled it. Last I checked, Outrage didn't confuse if it did no damage, but heck, anime logic. "Plus, the Oddish you were chasing is utilizing that Hidden Ability of hers." I gestured towards Oddish, who was running away at incredible speeds.
"Oh no! We can't let it escape!" Cassidy shouted. Taking advantage of the distraction, I called out my other Pokémon.
"Spear! Call on more of your kind to drive these bozos away, please!" My PokéBall popped open, and out came Spear, who lifted a spike into the air with a triumphant cry.
"Spi!" It shouted, as several more Beedrill swarmed in from all the trees. The Rocket goons in front of us gulped, before turning around and running for their lives, as the Beedrill chased after them.
"Electroweb~," I called in an overly-cheerful tone. Spear shot an electric net at the goons, and though it wasn't perfect, it did stun them all long enough for all the wild Beedrill to swoop in with a simultaneous Poison Sting attack, sending them flying.
"Looks like Team Rocket's blasting off again!" They shouted, as they became little more than a twinkle in the distance.
"Well, good riddance," Krysta scoffed, as she recalled Jackie and I recalled Spear. "I hope they land in a volcano somewhere."
"Ain't that a bit harsh?" I asked. I wouldn't wish death on anyone in this show...except maybe Ghetsis. That guy's a real asshole, and the only villain boss I've seen who's never showed any sign of remorse ever. Except maybe the Johto Rocket Admins, but they weren't assholes. At least, not in my opinion. Oh, and Lysandre, but he had good intentions, so he's okay. Actually, wait, he did seem sad about having to stoop as low as he did, so maybe he was a bit remorseful...anyways...
"Not when it comes to those two," she said venomously, before taking a few deep breaths. "Y'see, this isn't my first encounter with those two, but I'm not surprised they don't remember me. A while ago, before I even received Lila's egg, I befriended a wild Pokémon living near the village. I had no idea what kind of Pokémon it was, but based on how it interacted with things, I think it was a Dragon-type, though it didn't look a thing like a dragon, unless one melted or something. Anyways, we played together a lot, until one day, those same two goons showed up, and attacked me with two Ice-types, Cloyster and Dewgong. They froze my friend solid, and me as well. Though my dad arrived at that point, it was too late, and they'd stolen my friend. I was in the hospital for a few days, lucky that I was even alive, only thanks to the intense Ice-training I got from my grandpa, though I still lost a toe to frost bite." I looked down at this, and saw that, indeed, she was missing a toe on her right foot. I had never noticed before, though. Then I realized something.
"Is that why you hate Ice-types so much?"
"Yeah. Though I've gotten over the hate of Ice-types in general, I still refuse to train one, if only because I know I'd end up neglecting it. I still despise those two Rocket goons, and I want them to burn to ashes for what they did!" She clenched her fist, as a tear slid down her eye, and Lila gave sad moan. I tilted my glasses up a bit, almost able to feel the rage and sadness burning off of her.
"Well, let's just get going..." I said. Lila then jumped into Krysta's arms and chirped a bit. Krysta smiled, and cuddled her starter.
"Yeah. Let's," she agreed, and we walked off. But then Melanie suddenly stopped. "What's up, Mel?"
"Yeah, why'd you stop?" I added as well. Melanie picked up a nearby pebble, and through it at a nearby bush.
"Odd!" A voice shouted, as an Oddish walked out. Wait...
"Are you the Oddish we just saved?" I asked. It nodded eagerly. "Hmm...you want to come along with us?" It nodded again, and started swinging it's leaves threateningly. "Oh, you want a battle first?" It nodded again. "Alright then..."
"Wi~le maw!" Melanie shouted. I almost feel bad now...
"Spear! I choose you!" Melanie face-faulted at this, as Spear re-emerged from his PokéBall. "Sorry, but Spear hasn't had any battles yet, so I want to give it some experience."
"Maw maw..." Melanie conceded, but it was clear she wanted to be used in my next battle. Okay then, moving on...
"Twineedle!"
"Spi!" Spear shouted, diving down with two of his three needles. It sent the Oddish flying, before it fired a Razor Leaf. Must have had a Bulbasaur evolution or a Bellsprout evolution as its dad. Or some other Grass-type that can breed Razor Leaf onto Oddish, but Bulbasaur and Bellsprout are the ones native to Kanto. Anyway, as a Bug- and Poison-type, Spear barely even flinched from the attack. But then the Oddish's body started glowing pink, as she unleashed a pink wave through the area, causing Spear to fall asleep.
"Secret Power!" I cursed. "Spear! Wake up!" At this point, Oddish then started using Absorb rapidly. At this rate, Spear will just get picked off bit by bit... "Come on, Spear! Wake...wait, that's it!" I opened up my backpack and pulled out one of the Chesto Berries I grabbed the other day, crushed it in my hand, and hurled it at Spear, causing the juice to drip into his mouth, waking him up immediately.
"Spi?" It said, confused.
"Use Roost!" I shouted. Spear nodded, and put his head down, as it began glowing white, before looking up at full strength. The Oddish growled a bit, before beginning to charge up another Secret Power. "Electroweb!"
"Spi!" Spear still didn't get it exactly right, but it did spray Oddish with electrical threads that seemed to stun it enough to stop Secret Power.
"End it with Pursuit!" I shouted, as Spear's body began glowing purple, and he slammed his body into the Oddish, knocking her over.
"Oddish!" She shouted, before using her leaves to try and push herself up. I pulled out an empty Pokéball.
"Go! Pokéball!" I threw the Ball, and it sucked in the Oddish. It shook once. It shook twice. It shook thrice! I held my breath, as it...shook a fourth time. And a fifth time. But then...it shook a sixth time. Oh, for the love of-! Either break out or stay caught already! Then, as if it heard my thoughts, it...
*PING!*
...stopped shaking and sparkled!
"Alright! We've caught Oddish!" I cheered.
"Wi~le maw!"
"Spi-spi!" I then let my new comrade out of her Pokéball, and handed her an Oran Berry to help with the wounds. While she was silently eating it, I scanned her with the PokéDex again. I already heard the entry, so I tapped a button that said 'Moves and Ability only'.
"Oddish, the Weed Pokémon. This Oddish is female, it's ability is Run Away, and it knows the following moves: Razor Leaf, Secret Power, Sweet Scent, and Absorb."
"Good job!" Krysta congratulated, clapping slowly. I muttered a quick thank you, before bending down towards Oddish.
"Welcome to the team...Rei," I said, nicknaming it on the spot...I don't really know why. She just felt like a 'Rei' to me.
"Oddish!" She cheered. Well, now I've got three Pokémon to work with. Old Man Icy or whatever your name is, watch out! Even though Grass-types aren't necessarily the best against Ice-types so I probably won't be using Rei unless I have to because of it being three-on-three or something, I'm going to earn my Badge!
