CHAPTER 4- YOU NEVER KNOW
"You're sure you want them to come over here? All of them?"
"Yeah, seriously," James nodded, popping four pieces of bread in the toaster. "That way they all think we're telling them at the same time...we'll just tell your mom to act surprised beforehand."
"Sounds good," I giggled, biting my lip. "You know I'm still capable of making breakfast, right?"
"Yeah well, I might as well just get used to it now, Mama."
"I still can't get over how cute that is."
"Uh hello, you call me Daddy Diamond."
"Yes, yes I do," I grinned, blowing him a kiss before winking at him.
"OKAY then, let's focus on this dinner, shall we?"
"You're not fond of my emotional needs and wants, James?"
"I'm not uh, used to them yet."
"So what if I faked having certain cravings? Would you be able to tell?"
"Dam-arn it, I don't think so."
"Great save, honey, great save," I laughed, shaking my head.
"I'm trying, can I get credit for that?"
"Mm I suppose. When should we have the parental units over?"
"Wow really, honey?"
"Yes, really! Answer the question."
"Why not tonight? The house is clean, they all live remotely close...I don't see a problem."
"Alrighty then. You call your two, I'll get mine."
"And...break!"
"Oh god," I muttered. "I'm married to the biggest dork ever."
"Who you love," James yelled over his shoulder as he went upstairs.
"Who I love," I added, smiling to myself.
"So how's everyone?" I began, placing a bowl of salad in the center of mine and James' dining room table.
"We've been... busy," Mom started slowly, sneaking a look over at Dad and gesturing towards myself and my husband. "Tell them."
"Chloe had her baby two weeks ago. We've been helping out."
"Tell her 'Congratulations' from the two of us," I responded, forcing a smile. "Boy or girl?"
"Little boy. His name is Aaron. Aaron Paul Stewart."
"Are Travis and Chloe planning on getting married anytime soon?" Brooke asked, genuinely curious.
"They've discussed it, but it doesn't seem like the best thing to rush into at the moment," my father responded, giving me a pointed look.
Did he just imply I rushed into my marriage?
Bitch I will cut you.
I cleared my throat to get everyone's attention on myself and James, smiling at the four people before me. "Well um...speaking of little ones...I'm-"
"Wait," Ron cut me off, turning to his son. "Tell me it's not yours."
"Tell me it's not his," my father said at the same time, sounding equally disgusted.
I recoiled at the venom in their voices, watching as James clenched and unclenched his fists under the table.
"Of course the baby is his," I spat, looking at our fathers in disbelief. "What would you expect?"
"Children are just a nuisance," Ron scoffed, shaking his head.
"How would you know?" James growled. "You've never raised one."
"And what's with you, Dad?" I asked, frowning. "I'm proud that this baby is mine and James'."
"Well I, for one, am not. I told you before you got married that it was a bad decision. I mean, just one look at him and you can tell-"
"Out."
"What did you say to me, Katherine?"
"You heard me. You're not going to sit here in our house, at our table, eating our food and badmouth my husband. Get out."
"Miranda, talk some sense into your daughter," my father ordered my mom.
"Oh no way," Mom shook her head, leaning back in her chair, glass of wine in her hand. "I'm totally with her on this."
"Are you serious?"
"Dead serious."
"Well fine then. I'm leaving."
"As am I," Ron chimed in, rising from his chair.
"Don't let the door hit you on the way out," I yelled as the door slammed. "Or do, I really don't care."
"Can't have even one nice family dinner," Brooke sighed. "Anyway...tell us everything! Screw your fathers, I want to know!"
"Of course you'd say that, Mom," James laughed, squeezing my knee. "Well this little devil told me in a very clever way. We had just come back from dinner on my birthday and Kate must have run to our bus earlier than us because when I got there..."
I smiled at my husband as he relayed the story to our proud mothers, both grinning with an occasional sniffle here and there.
Who needs those two idiots? We have our moms.
And well, each other.
We're all we need. James, Kate, Fox, and our little bundle of joy.
Maybe one or two after that...hey, you never know.
