Day 2: The Switch
Part 1
I rolled over to my side. I was still sick, I felt my throat hurting, and my voice was weak. I think I also had a fever. I rolled over again and leaned against Inuko. Haku and Kira had curled up with their brothers next to us, and Nina was next to me too.
"Inuko," I mumbled. I couldn't open my eyes, I felt they were inflamed and on fire.
"What's wrong?" I felt Nina's hands touch my shoulders. "Its okay Nina," I coughed in to Inuko's haori. Nina's hands touched my forehead.
"You're burning up, your fever is worse…" she said. I rolled over. I still couldn't seem to open my eyes. I only heard voices.
"WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?" Inuko's voice shouted. "WHY THE HELL… WHAT THE… WHAT…. IS THIS?" He shouted again pulling at Nina's short cropped haori.
"Inuko shut up already," Nina's voice bellowed. I finally managed to open my eyes and sit up.
"Please stop yelling my head hurts," I looked around the room. Haku and Kira were staring at Nina and Inuko. They were acting very, very strange, and for some reason Nina hand her arms around me.
"Uh Nina?" I questioned her.
"What?" Inuko replied.
"I was talking to Nina not you," I looked at him then at her. Nina then pulled down at her short cropped haori.
"Is something…. Wrong?" I asked pulling the blanket over my shoulders. I slide myself towards Haku and Kira. I saw Nina snarl and look at Inuko with detest in her eyes, "how the hell do you wear such short clothes," she hissed over at Inuko.
I followed her gaze and looked at Inuko. "Your one to talk, this haori makes me so hot and sweat I can't stand it. And these pants are so annoying," she said pulling at the pant legs," I looked at Haku and Kira.
"So… are you two playing a game or something? Are you okay?" I asked again coughing.
Nina slide over to me and touched my forehead again, "… you really need to lie down, and I'll get some cold water." She jumped up to her feet, pulled down at her haori and awkwardly walked outside.
"Uhhh yeah I'll help," Inuko stuttered and followed behind her.
Outside Nina and Inuko walked over to the water pump.
"Look, I don't know what the hell is going on, but what the hell happened?" Inuko hissed pulled at Nina's haori.
"I was about to ask you the same damn thing, why are you in my body?" She retorted pulling Inuko's sleeves up.
"No bloody way am I wearing this," Inuko hissed again, and pulled at the short haori.
"Stop that you'll rip my clothes, " Nina shouted. "… and it's not that short either, so stop will you." She shouted again.
"Wait, hang on… I need to think," Inuko pondered around the water pump, he kept running his hand through his hair, and Nina did this a lot when she needed to think. I guess being in a girl's body also meant acquiring her habits.
"Will you stop pondering and stop touching my hair," Nina shouted and threw her hands in to the air. She wasn't any better; being trapped in Inuko's body wasn't helping her mood.
"What happened to us, how is it we are in each other's bodies?" He asked feeling Nina's body.
"STOP TOUCHING ME…" she shouted at him. "WHAT THE HELL LIKE I'D WANT TO TOUCH YOU, I MEAN…. GROSS" He hissed.
"I think I know how this happened," Nina replied. She pulled open the haori's top.
"Uhh, um I never let my chest show out of my haori that's embarrassing especially around the girls, I have some self respect you know," he said blushing he waved his hands in the air.
"I'm hot okay so shut up," Nina replied.
"Look I think last night when we encountered that witch, I think she may have cursed us," Nina replied, she pulled off Inuko's top and tossed it to the ground.
"Wait, don't undress me.. I mean don't undress, dammit put my top back on," He hissed angrily. "And what do you mean cursed," he added.
"Look leave me the hell alone, I'm hot okay," Inuko shouted.
"You have got to be kidding me do you think that witch cursed us so we would switch bodies? This better not be permanent," Nina hissed. "DISGUSTING I DON'T WAN TTO BE IN A GIRLS BODY," she shouted again.
"Like I'd want to be in a boy's body either, I'm so freaked out right now," Inuko replied looking down at his bare chest.
"So what the hell do we do now?" He asked looking at Nina.
"First things first, we cannot let the girls know what is going on, especially Kiki, she's sick… she doesn't need this, we act as we are, you act as me and I act. And keep your hands off Haku and Kiki got that…." Nina crossed her arms.
"How can I keep away from your sister if I'm supposed to be you, she's sick isn't she… she'd want her brother to take care of her," Inuko replied filling up a bucket with cold water.
"Just don't do anything stupid," Nina replied. She sighed deeply and pulled down at the haori and angrily went back inside the house. Inuko followed quickly behind her.
Back inside the house, my fever hadn't subsided it only got worse.
"Inuko, she's getting worse," Haku's voice cracked. She and Kira were next to me and their eyes were moist with tears.
I could see Nina sit away from me; her face looked like she was worried about me. "It's okay Kikyko," Inuko said placing a cold cloth on my forehead. Inuko's voice wasn't himself. He'd be very worried, his voice would sound worried. I looked at him.
"In-uko… are you okay?" I managed to ask.
"Yeah fine," he said. The cloth was getting hot and fast.
"Inuko," my voice cracked. I saw Nina shift towards me. Why was she worried about me? She never cared about any of us before, let alone me… I think she hated me the most.
"Yes?" Inuko replied. His body seemed stiff and tense. He wasn't wearing his haori top, I felt embarrassed, he had never dressed like that ever, even if he was hot.
"Put your clothes on," I coughed. Haku looked up at him and blushed, then quickly looked away. Kira shook her head and sighed.
"Sorry," he said. Nina tossed him his top; he put it on quickly and pulled it together.
I coughed and rolled to my side. "I don't feel good at all," I said coughing against my arm. Nina had shifted even closer to me. Her eyes and Inuko's meet for a moment, as if they were talking to each other.
"Inuko seriously what is with you, your sister is lying here sick, her fever is above normal and you are acting like you could care less? What is with you?" Haku angrily shouted at him.
"Uhh… I do care, I'm sorry if I seem I don't. I just don't know what to do for her," He seemed agitated. Nina looked like she was nervous or angry, I couldn't tell. Her body looked very tensed and she her lips were pressed together in a hard line.
"I…. can't… breath," I seriously felt like my throat was closing up.
"What?" Inuko and Nina both leaned in towards me.
"We have to get her something… anything, we need to make her get better," Nina finally spoke. She seemed angry.
"The mountains, there's a herb there, if we run real fast it'll take us a few hours, we should get there and back before night fall," Inuko said touching his hand to my shoulder.
"Your both going to leave us here alone, are you crazy?" Haku and Kira both shouted at the same time.
"Haku, look please just keep her fever down, keep her drinking water and keep a cloth on her head, please it'll give us time…." I was surprised Nina called Hakura, Haku.
"Okay," she said. I saw her cheeks turn rosy.
"Okay then, we must hurry, let's go Nina," Inuko jumped to his feet. Nina looked at me, her eyes looked so concerned.
"We have to hurry," She said jumping to her feet. I felt Haku's hands leave my arms, as she stood to her feet.
"Inuko," she said to him. He blushed and looked over at her.
"Yes?" He replied. She came to his side and grabbed his arm. She pulled him out the door. Nina clenched her teeth together and her face looked pained with worry, or jealousy…. Or something. I wasn't sure what was going on with her, or Inuko, I closed my eyes hoping I'd sleep.
Outside.
"Uhh, yeah?" Inuko tried to pull away from Haku. "Look I don't know what's going on with you and Nina, but please put your differences aside and work together," she said to him. He nodded and didn't speak.
"Our parents won't be home for a few days, Kikyko has to be better before they get home, you know how your father is, he's so overprotective of her," she said placing her hands on her hips, "… he'll kill you and us," she continued.
"I know I know," was all he said to her.
She leaned up on her toes and attempted to kiss Inuko on the lips.
"Uhhh what are you doing?" He shouted at her and pushed her away forcefully knocking her to the ground.
Nina's eyes followed Haku, and her hands clenched into fists. She stood in the doorway her body rigid, as if she was ready to pounce at Inuko for pushing Haku.
"Hey what was that for?" she said, as she pulled herself off the ground. She dusted her kimono.
"I only wanted to wish you a safe return…" she said, her eyes were wet from tears.
"Well sorry I'm not in the mood to kiss you today," he said crossing his arms he turned away and shouted at Nina.
"Nina let's go!"
Nina angrily ran toward Inuko as he quickly ran off. She was right behind him. They were half way through the outskirts of the village both of them jumping and running at high speeds.
"HEY…" Nina shouted at Inuko.
"HEY STOP WILL YOU," she shouted at Inuko again.
"DAMN BODY I CAN BARELY KEEP UP WITH YOU, WILL YOU STOP DAMMIT," she shouted at him again, this time she quickened her pace and caught up to him. Then he felt a fist hit him on the head.
"What the hell is your problem?" He shouted and slide against the soil. He stopped and confronted her.
"Why did you push Haku away like that," Nina hissed she clenched her hands into fists.
"Are you kidding me, I wasn't going to kiss…. A girl…. Gross." He replied.
"Look you're supposed to be me, as much as I would love to murder you right now, you are me… meaning if Haku kisses you," he paused for a minute and mumbled under his breath, "even if it is my body and my girlfriend, you don't ever push her away, she'll hate me now." She hissed again angrily.
"Not my problem, fix it when your back…" Inuko hissed again and jumped through the air.
"WAIT, WHAT DO YOU MEAN NOT YOUR PROBLEM… You're the one who started this whole mess," She shouted after him.
"Look shut up Nina, I mean Inuko… you want to make it to the western mountains before night fall, we need to cut through the forest, and through the grave of bones, and up the mountain… if we are lucky we'll make it back before nightfall," He replied, darting towards the forest of InuYasha.
"Wait, hey, come on already I can't keep up with you.. You need to reduce your speed Nina… gah you know what I mean… slow down," She shouted at him, trying her best to keep her pace.
"No I hate this forest we have to get through it and fast…." Inuko slide across the ground, and stopped near the forest.
"Why'd you stop?" Nina slowed down her pace and stood near Inuko.
"I hate this forest…" he hissed again.
"Why? It's the forest of my fathers, they named it 'the Forest of InuYasha', because this is where he was pinned to a tree for fifty years…. By a priestess named Kikyo…" Nina replied. She pulled her hands through her haori sleeves, a trait Inuko always does, and walked towards the forest.
"That's why I hate it…" Inuko replied and followed behind her.
"I know this forest well, keep close and you won't get lost, it's a large forest, and… it can be dangerous," Nina replied, pushing her way through shrubs.
"Hey you said your father was pinned to a tree here by a preiestess…?" Inuko asked curiously.
"Yeah," Nina replied approaching a clearing where the bone eaters well still stood.
"Why didn't he marry her instead…." Inuko asked again. Then he felt a fist hit his head again.
"What was that for, stop that!" He shouted.
"Because Kikyo died during that time and he had meet my mom and fell in love with her… I never cared or asked about Kikyo or anything… so drop it." Nina rambled. She stopped as she entered the clearing. Inuko stumbled in to her.
"Hey…" he said.
"This is the bone eaters well," Nina said. She approached the well, and walked around it.
"Huh, so you're not going to tell me about it?" Inuko asked speeding up to Inuko's pace.
"Nope, now let's go, we need to get through this forest," Nina replied and darted through the trees.
