Switching Lives

(Chapter 4)

Once Spongebob and Sandy got back to the treedome they were somewhat relieved by what Plankton told them.

"So if Plankton is right we should change back to normal within a few hours. Isn't that great Spongebob?"

"Well you never know about Plankton. What if he was just lying to us to get us to let him go?"

"I guess we'll have to wait and see. If Plankton was lying we'll get him later."

"Well Karen and Plankton were looking for each other and Plankton seemed pretty concerned about her when we found him. He could have been telling the truth. I guess Karen is more important to him than any of his plans. Do you remember what time it was when Plankton switched us Sandy?"

"All I know is it was after seven when you came in the other day and it's after six now so if Plankton was telling the truth we should change back in about an hour."

"Ok so what can we do for an hour?"

"Hey in case you forgot... we did kind of leave our karate match unfinished."

"Oh come on Sandy I almost had you beat and you know it."

"You got lucky is what happened... if I hadn't of tripped I would have finished you up in the next few minutes."

"Oh yeah... do you want to test that theory Sandy?"

"Bring it on Spongebob!"

They put on their karate gear and jump at each other to continue their long battle of who's better. They still weren't quite used to the bodies they were in, but that didn't stop them from trying. Sandy wasn't quite used to Spongebob's water helmet, since it was so big it slowed her down a lot and Spongebob kept stepping on Sandy's tail.

"Your tail may be getting in the way every now and then, but I think I finally know how you kept beating me. I always had to wear my helmet and it slowed me down so you were always faster than me."

"Oh yeah... well what about when I'm outside of my tree and I'm wearing my air suit? I'll admit... your helmet is a bit heavy, but I still beat you when I'm in my suit and helmet."

Spongebob was quiet for a moment... he didn't really know what to say back.

"Face it Spongebob... I'm better than you as myself and as you."

Spongebob being the competitive guy that he is wasn't ready to accept defeat yet and he runs at her for another attack. Spongebob thought smart, he realized that the helmet was slowing her down so he decided to do a lot of quick hits.

"Hey Spongebob cut it out."

"What's wrong Sandy... Am I too fast for you?"

Sandy knew she wasn't going to be faster than Spongebob, at least not with her inside his body so she had to outsmart him. She doesn't try to attack back she simply predicts his moves ahead of time and starts blocking him.

"Ha see Spongebob you never had to be faster than me. You just have to figure out what I'm going to do before I do it like this..."

Sandy ducks down low and does a swinging leg kick which knocks Spongebob off his feet. Spongebob was stunned for a moment, he watched as Sandy was having her fun and laughs at him.

"See Spongebob not only do you have to be quick, but you've got to think ahead as well."

"Oh... ok I think I got it now."

Sandy being a good sport decided to help him up and they continued their match. A few minutes went by and soon Spongebob started building some good offense and had Sandy backing up towards her tree. Sandy was caught off guard again because she didn't expect Spongebob to put up such a fight. She found herself tripping again, but like the first time Spongebob tried to catch her but still ended up falling on top of her. Her helmet came off when they fell and this time their lips made contact. Just as they kissed they felt something else happen, they looked at each other and realized that they were in their own bodies. Sandy was now on top of Spongebob instead and things got awkward again. She quickly broke the kiss and got off of him. Sandy was kind of embarassed because her and Spongebob have never kissed before. She was glad to be back in her own body, but she didn't really know what to do at the moment so she just waited for Spongebob to do something. Spongebob got up and dusted himself off, he was kind of embarrassed about what happened too, but he took a look at her and tried to start up a conversation.

"Well... it looks like we're back in our own bodies now."

"Yeah... it looks that way."

"I guess Plankton was telling the truth then."

"Yeah I guess he was."

"But... about what just happened..."

"I'm sorry Sandy... I tried to catch you, but I fell on top of you and we kind of... kissed."

"I was the one that tripped so it was kind of my fault."

"Don't worry about it accidents happen."

They were both quiet for a moment... they both thought about what just happened. They both kind of enjoyed the kiss, but it was quick and it was by accident. Sandy kind of wanted to see what would happen if they were to kiss for real so she was the next one to speak.

"But... what if it wasn't by accident?"

"What do you mean?"

"I mean... I know it was an accident, but what if we kissed for real?"

Spongebob was excited, but he tried not to act too excited or else she might change her mind.

"I don't know Sandy... wouldn't that make things... awkward between us?"

Sandy couldn't help but laugh at this a little.

"No more awkward than what happened a moment ago."

"Right..."

"So come on Spongebob... One little kiss couldn't hurt right?"

"I guess not."

They took a moment and looked at each other before they did anything else. Spongebob was the first one to smile and for Sandy it didn't take long for her to smile either. They've hugged plenty of times so they start off like they were going to hug, they were hesitant at first but finally they came together for the first real kiss they've ever had together. Since it was so short the first time they wanted it to last longer this time. They closed their eyes and continued for another five seconds until finally they broke the kiss. They looked at each other like they've never really done before. They each took a step back and were going to say how they felt.

"So... that was a real kiss."

"How was that for you Spongebob?"

Spongebob takes a moment to answer but Sandy noticed how red his cheeks were getting.

"Well... to be honest... I liked it a lot Sandy."

Sandy laughs nervously while blushing but tells him what she thought.

"I liked it too Spongebob."

Spongebob smiles really big because since she liked the kiss that meant that she liked him back and so Spongebob decides to tell her now.

"So Sandy..."

"Yeah?"

"I've been meaning to tell you something for a while now."

Sandy noticed how nervous he was getting but she smiled at him and encouraged him to go on.

"Yeah... go on."

"Well it's just that... we've been friends for so long."

"Yeah... and so."

"I mean... we just kissed so... I thought this would be the perfect time to say..."

Spongebob was blushing hard and was so nervous that he was having second thoughts, but there was no turning back now, not after he got her attention. Sandy was still waiting for him to say something, he couldn't tell what she was feeling but there was some look that she was giving him that encouraged him to finish that sentence.

"I thought this would be the perfect time to say... I love you Sandy."

Spongebob felt like a huge amount of pressure was lifted from him, but he still had an uncomfortable feeling because Sandy could easily turn him down. He looked away for a moment not really sure what to do next. Sandy was happy that he finally told her but was concerned with the look on his face.

"Well what's with the look? You just told me that you loved me, but you're acting like you just got fired from the Krusty Krab?"

Spongebob was actually quick to respond.

"Oh... well it's because I didn't actually think that you would love me back."

Sandy then smiled at him and did something that he didn't expect. She quickly kissed him back and told him something.

"Well you better think again Spongebob."

Spongebob was shocked, but soon a smile came over him.

"Wait Sandy so that means..."

"It means I love you too Spongebob. Why else would I kiss you again?"

Spongebob blushes again and finally believes her.

"Because you love me."

"Right."

They were both quiet for a while to think about what has happened to them over the past two days. Plankton switched their bodies and they both had to live each other's lives, but as they went along they found a new respect for each other and they even got closer along the way. The moment that they switched back was the moment where they shared their first kiss. Even though it was quick, they both knew then and there that they had feelings for each other. Before Spongebob left Sandy's treedome she told him to thank Plankton next time he saw him. Spongebob was a bit confused at first, but then came to realize that switching lives could have been the best thing that has ever happened to him.
