Chapter 4:

Usagi was sleeping soundly. She was in a nice warm place. Her thoughts started to stir as she heard a consistent pounding in her head. No, wait. It wasn't in her head. Was it at her apartment door?

It took a few moments to gather strength and sensation to move her arm. She was entwined with Minako. They must have fallen asleep together on the couch again.

"Minako," Usagi whispered gently, "Minako."

Usagi finally got a moan in reply. "There's someone pounding on our door."

"It's Saturday morning. We don't need to get up early," Minako protested. Minako refused to open her eyes, and only hugged Usagi tighter. As if she was willing her roomate to fall back asleep.

What time was it anyway, for it was still dark outside. Usagi was troubled by this recent observation. The pounding didn't cease, it just continued in a forceful rhythm.

"Minako," Usagi said softly, "wake up beautiful." Usagi then softly kissed her roommate on the lips. Usagi knew this always stirred the blonde awake.

Minako didn't take long to return the kiss. She then shifted on the couch to pin Usagi underneath her. "That was a cheap shot to get me awake," Minako said tiredly. The blonde still trying to wake up.

Usagi rubbed her bare foot along the blonde's leg. "I will make it up to you later," Usagi teased. Then said seriously, "Please let me get up. That pounding on the door isn't relenting."

Minako suddenly just realized it was their door. She blushed and said, "I thought it was the neighbors, or outside. Why didn't you say something?" Minako sat upright, releasing her grip on Usagi. She then did a power stretch. "What time is it anyway?"

"3am," Usagi said with concern. Usagi crawled off of the couch and walked towards the door and looked through the peephole and gasped in horror.

"Mamoru!" Usagi hissed. She then quickly unlocked the door and opened it up to see a full view of Mamoru, her ex.

"Oh, thank you! My fist was beginning to turn numb," Mamoru said exhaustedly. He looked like crap. He was wearing wrinkled clothes, his jet black hair was disheveled and needed to be cut badly, and he had a full ragged beard covering his face. Usagi was taken aback. Mamoru was always clean shaven, was sharp dressed in crisp pressed clothes, and always radiated energy. That energy wasn't even present tonight. He looked drained. His dark sapphire eyes even looked dull and lack luster.

"What happened to you, Mamoru?" Usagi asked in concern. "Why are you here at 3am in the morning?" Usagi asked warily. Mamoru gazed into Usagi's eyes with sadness, for he realized she didn't use his pet name.

"I tried to come as fast as I could against medical advice. I needed to see you, Usako. Why didn't you try to look for me," Mamoru asked with pain filled eyes. Usagi froze as she heard her pet name roll off of his lips.

"Mamoru, why would I look for you? You broke up with me two years ago," Usagi said with hurt starting to show in her voice. It felt like a band aid was ripped off of her wound that she tried to heal shut so long ago. She thought she moved past all of this, and came to terms. Found closure, but all the raw emotions were flooding back.

"Broke up with you!" Mamoru asked bewildered. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. He ran a hand through his dark hair in frustration. "Usako, why would I do that? I was going to ask you to marry me shortly after I got settled in America. I was getting everything ready for you to come out and visit."

Usagi was taken aback. She didn't believe or trust his words. "Marriage? You never returned any of my calls. It was just sudden silence after you left. Then the letter... showed up," Usagi said, barely getting the last of the words out. She tried to blink back the tears.

"What letter, Usako. I never got a chance to write you. I was riding my bike to the public library and was hit by a car. It was a hit and run, the driver didn't stop. I was unconscious, in a coma for two years. I was a John Doe." Mamoru explained. He made a move to caress Usagi's cheek, but froze in mid motion as Usagi stepped away.

Usagi retreated into the apartment. Mamoru wondered if he should step in. Usagi never gave an invitation. Mamoru still had his own apartment in Tokyo. He never relinquished it when he moved to America. His stay there was possibly only temporary. He was interning in America as a surgeon. After the hit and run, he lost his mobility and precision in his left hand. It would take physical therapy to rebuild what he once had. He had to change his focus, but to what he didn't know. He was lost at the moment, having a hard time finding his passion and drive again. All that mattered at the moment was having Usagi by his side. She was his rock. The love of his life.

Usagi returned and handed him a letter. It must have been "the" letter she was referring to. Mamoru opened it and read it. His face turned grim. "Usako, that isn't my handwriting. If I ever wanted to break up with you, I would have respect and do it in person. Sending a letter is heartless and tacky." Mamoru wanted to touch Usagi so badly, to pull her in an embrace, to kiss her, it was killing him.

Usagi quickly grabbed the letter back and looked at it. "Oh no…" Usagi said with dread. She then looked up at Mamoru and felt so much regret and guilt. "I am so sorry. How can this…" She trailed off while looking at the letter. There were worn spots on the letter from handling it many times. "Why did I never notice this before. I must have read this at least a hundred times." She then looked up at Mamoru. "My emotions must have clouded my judgement. I just felt so rejected, betrayed, and hurt. My calls never went though. It was as if you disa…" Usagi quickly placed a hand over her mouth as dread set in. She always recognized the handwriting. She just couldn't place whose.

"I did Usa…" Mamoru started before he was cut off.

"Minako," Usagi said in dread. She then looked behind her and noticed her roommate wasn't anywhere in sight. "Minako!" Usagi said louder. She felt her heart being torn in two as the realization was starting to finally sink in.

Minako walked in from the kitchen with a brownie in hand. She then saw the look on Usagi's face and stopped in midstride. "Usagi, what wrong?" She then shot Mamoru an evil glare, "What did you do to her?"

Usagi held the letter up and simply said, "Why? Why would you do this to me?" Hurt and betrayal washing over her face.

Minako quickly answered with concern and love in her voice. "He was hurting you Usagi. How many nights were you falling asleep crying. Asking why he wasn't calling you. You were so depressed. I only wanted to help you. I wanted to end your pain and suffering." Tears were falling down Minako's cheeks. She took a step towards Usagi, and noticed her love took a step back. "Please believe me."

"How did you get a letter to be mailed from Ameri…" Usagi started to ask, then stopped as she realized the answer. Minako answered anyways. "I flew to America to audition for a part in the Gotham t.v. series. The idea occurred to me while I was out there shopping for you before returning home."

Usagi looked like she was going to faint. "I need fresh air, time to process all of this."

"Usagi…" Minako said while trying to pull her roommate into a hug, but failing while her love was still resisting. Usagi held up a hand in protest. "Minako, I need time. I need to get away to process all of this. It's too overwhelming."

Usagi then turned to Mamoru and said, "Feel free to spend the night. You can use my bed. You need rest. You shouldn't be traveling in your condition."

"Thank you, Usako," Mamoru said while walking into the apartment and walking over to the kitchen. He wouldn't really find any food in their, but Usagi was going to let Mamoru figure that one out for himself.

Usagi then turned back to Minako and said, "I will see you later." She then grabbed her purse and left, not even waiting for another protest from her roommate.

Usagi made it all the way to her car before the tears started to fall in waves. She couldn't keep it bottled up any longer. She started the car and drove. She didn't realize where she was driving to until her headlights fell on a familiar structure. She shut off her engine and walked up to the structure she loved to call her second home. She didn't knock, or ring the doorbell, she just simply pulled out a key and let herself in. She quietly moved through the house to her bedroom.

"Usagi? Is that you?" A very familiar voice called out from the dark.

"Oh Haruka!" Usagi said in sobs.
