Chapter 4

Back in bed, in the medical ward, the humanoid dragon watched as four more beings entered the room. Her purple eyes warily scanned Earth's heroes.

"Lets start with introductions," the man with a red cape and S on his chest said. "My name is Superman. These are my teammates, John Stewart, also known as the Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and this is Diana. And you've already met Flash and J'onn."

Taking a moment to look at each individual, the humanoid dragon introduced herself.

"My name is Kaida. I'm a knight of King Arthur's court."

"King Arthur? Like, Merlin and Camelot and that type of stuff?" Flash asked.

Kaida nodded at the red clad hero. Skepticism spread about the League before the Amazonian princess spoke up.

"Can you tell us the last thing you remember before you were found?"

Taking a moment to remember, the bedridden female took a breath before beginning.

"I was out with Arthur and my fellow knights when I was hit with a poison arrow. I remember being brought back to Merlin who started casting a spell, I thought one of healing to help me. I can't remember much after that."

At the explanation, she received funny looks before John Stewart spoke up.

"Right. Well, if you really are some medieval creature, what were you doing in that museum?"

"I'm not sure."

"I can answer that," came a voice from the doorway.

All eyes turned to see the Dark Knight enter the room with a book in his hand.

"Kaida, this is Batman," Superman quickly introduced .

"After confirming the mud sample I took was from England, I did a little more digging. The police report said only one of the artifacts from the museum is unaccounted for. The Dragon Eye amulet."

Batman opened the book and turned to a specific page, then handed to the girl sitting in bed.

"The what?" Flash asked with a tilt of his head.

"Legend is, Merlin gave Arthur that amulet for protection. It was thought to be just a story. Then, a few years ago, a couple of archeologists found it at a castle. It was donated a few days ago to Gotham Museum for the charity auction."

"I don't understand," Kaida said in a small voice as she looked at the picture in the book.

"You were badly poisoned when we found you. It would appear that Merlin put you inside of the stone, in a form of suspended animation perhaps, until such a time that could cure you. Its been hundreds of years since that time," J'onn said as he thought out the most logical explanation.

The humanoid dragon saw the reason in the green ones words, but it was still a hard thing to comprehend. Even worse, if they were right and her time was now the far past, that could only mean that her adopted family was long gone.

"If what you say is true, then everyone I know must be ...," Kaida trailed off as her purple eyes looked back down at the book.

The others looked on, unsure of what to say. Then, her head moved back up to look at them as she thought of another question.

"What of the dragon communities? They must have advanced throughout time. May I contact one until I find a place in this new world?

The other occupants in the room were lost at the female's words, but Hawkgirl was the one to voice the confusion.

"Dragon communities?"

"Yes," The humanoid dragon confirmed but didn't like the looks she was receiving, "What is the matter? Do humans not even communicate with dragons anymore?"

"Uh," Flash started, unsure how to break the news.

"There are no dragons," Batman said in a monotone voice.

Purple eyes snapped to him with a wide unbelieving look in them.

"'No dragons,'" Kaida repeated softly but found her voice as she asked the detective, "How could that be!?"

"They most likely died out hundreds of years ago. They only exist in stories now, thought to be a myth. You are the first real dragon any of us has ever seen."

At hearing Batman's words, Kaida leaned back against the head of her medical bed with a heartbroken expression on her face. The news of her family and her species, hitting her hard.

"Smooth," Flash told the Dark Knight as the speedster gave him a look that said he didn't like the way the detective handled the situation.

After hearing everything, Superman came to a decision and took the opportunity to try and ease the nerves of the still bedridden female. Walking up to her, he put a hand on her shoulder to try and comfort her before he spoke.

"I know this is a lot to take in right now, but don't worry. You're safe now and you can stay here at the Watchtower until you find your feet."

Kaida looked up into the face of the Kryptonion, she couldn't return his soft smile but she gave her head a nod to show she agreed with his words.

"Good. We'll leave you to get some rest," Superman said.

He and the rest of the League starting walking out the door. The Martian Manhunter paused as he passed by the bed and turned to the occupant in it.

"I'll be back in a little while to see how you are doing. If you need anything before then, press the little green button on the wall next to your bed."

Kaida turned her head and located the button she was told about. Looking back at J'onn, she nodded her head in conformation.

J'onn also nodded his head once in a sign of departure, then turned and dimmed the lights before he walked out the door.

The medieval being put the book she was still holding on the bedside table before laying down. Curling up into a fetal position, she felt a few tears start to fall as everything that she was just told swirled around her mind, but she was mainly holding onto the tiny bit of hope that this was all just a bad fever dream from the poison arrow that she would soon wake from.

Out in the hallway, J'onn rejoined his teammates that were waiting on him.

"What's the story J'onn?"

"She was telling the truth."

Even with Batman's evidence, the League seemed surprised by the Martians words.

"So, not just some crazy mutant chick who escaped a Renaissance Festival," Flash contemplated.

"So, what are we gonna do? We really just gonna let her stay in the Watchtower?" Hawkgirl questioned.

"I don't see why not. I sense she isn't a malevolent being. And she has no where else to go."

"Yeah, but what about after she gets better?"

"Lets not rush to decision," Superman said, "First, lets let her recover and then go from there. Ok?"

Agreed for now, the League departed from the hallway and their impromptu meeting. All walked away wondering how this new medieval creature would affect the future.
