A week passed since the media frenzy began and while many reporters had gradually settled down with their ravenous hunger for information about Toph's personal life, quite a few continued to hound her for statements. She made a great effort to not explode at the reporters. That would only fuel their annoying resolve even further.

You can imagine the police chief's anger and disdain when she came home late one night and found an extremely annoying reporter from the Republic Times waiting in front of her apartment door- or rather peeping under the door, trying to see if anyone was home.

Toph sighed tiredly and crossed her arms over her chest, clearing her throat.

The woman was startled and whipped around. She was a middle aged reporter in a skimpy dress and Toph recognized her annoying breathing and movements immediately. Her name was Akio and she was by far the most annoying and meddling reporter in the entire city. She was always stalking the members of Team Avatar, trying to get any inappropriate photos she could and often made things up just to sell her paper.

Akio was wide eyed and nervous, having been caught by the police chief. She'd thought Toph wouldn't be home for several hours.

Her resolve strengthened, however, when she noticed Toph's fatigue and immediately sought to take advantage of it.

"Chief Beifong," she stated as she prepared her pen and notepad. "You've avoided the press all week. It is your duty to Republic City-"

"It's my duty, lady," the metalbender interrupted, "to protect the city. Not to give out statements about my personal life to you so you can twist my words."

The dumbfounded reporter huffed and narrowed her eyes, setting her hands on her hips. "Freedom of the press, Chief. My job is to report and inform the people of events and interesting information in the city and about our leaders. Now I will only ask two simple questions as I can see you are tired. Why did Moo Chee leave? And are you becoming romantically involved with Councilman Sokka? You've always had a close friendship with the councilman, but it seems you've been getting much cozier with him as of late," she smirked smugly as she awaited Toph's reaction.

"Look lady," the bender snarled, trying but failing to contain her growing rage and exhaustion. "I've had a hell of a week without this shit. I don't need this right now. What happened is none of your concern, or anybody else's. Moo Chee left, that's all you know and all anybody needs to know. I don't need him. And Sokka is my best friend, that's all. He's trying to help, the same as my other friends. Stop hounding us for crap you are not gonna find. Now get the hell out of here."

Akio's expression was one of confusion and weariness before her face fell to one of mock and a smirk plastered on her red lips. "It's in your best interest to answer my questions, Chief," she stated mockingly. "I've followed this story since it began and I'll be damned if I'm not the first one to get the full scoop. So you can either cooperate or perhaps there will a headline in tomorrow's paper about your affair with Councilman Sokka and the revelation that this is in fact his child. A secret love child between the head councilman and police chief? What a scandal! Your careers would lose their spotless reputations."

Toph felt the woman's heartbeat through the ground and knew she was serious on her threats. The bender registered Akio's words before she bared her teeth in fury and balled her hands into fists. Toph was absolutely livid. She walked to the woman and grabbed her by the shirt.

Akio gulped as she noticed the silent fury in the blind woman's eyes.

"You will not threaten me. I protect this city, I do not deserve this shit. Now you better walk away right now before I-"

"You should do as Chief Beifong suggests, Ms Akio. Believe me she is brutal when threatened," a new voice called from behind.

Toph felt who it was through the vibrations in the ground and turned her head slightly.

"What are you doing here, Aang?"

The tired avatar walked up and easily separated the two women.

He turned to the reporter, eyes narrowed and dangerous.

She gulped. The only thing more terrifying than a pissed off Toph was a pissed off avatar. Angering Beifong was easy. But everyone knew it took a lot to anger the easy going and cheerful Avatar Aang.

And having the city's worshipped avatar against you never panned out good results.

"You threatened to black mail one of my best friends, and threatened to to ruin the careers of two very honest and hard working people. I am a witness to that." Aang stared her down. His incredible height definitely helped him look intimidating. "You should know the law against black mailing. I won't stand by and watch you hurt my friend and brother-in-law for your own selfish gain. Toph's personal life is none of your concern, and Sokka doesn't deserve to have lies spread and ruin his reputation when all he's done is be a good friend. You get out of my sight, and if I see anything remotely close to what you just just said in the paper, I will personally report you and make sure you never work in this business again. Am I clear?"

The woman gulped, scared to death. She reluctantly nodded, stammered out an apology to him and Toph before scurrying off.

Toph and Aang erupted into laughter from her reaction.

"Damn Twinkle Toes, she was shaking in fear. You almost made her piss her pants!" The pregnant woman leaned on his tall frame as she toppled over laughing, mindful of her large belly.

Aang chuckled as well. "I just got out of a meeting and wanted to stop by to see how you were doing. I heard her threats and I lost it. She has no right to do those kinds of things. But I think I got the message across pretty clear."

The metalbender invited her friend in during her laughter.

The two benders sat on the comfortable sofa as they drank fresh coffee Toph brewed just a few minutes ago.

Toph laughed as she recalled the shaking form of the reporter.

"Who would've thought you'd actually grow some balls to scare the living shit out of people, Twinkle Toes?" She cackled. "Of course everyone says you grew up to be pretty hot and masculine. There's gotta be why Katara's let you knock her up three times."

Aang coughed and blushed. "Right. Well I just came to see how you're doing. The last thing I was told by Sokka is you're having a little girl?"

Toph smiled and rubbed her tummy. "Yup. The healer confirmed it last week."

"Congratulations."

She thanked him and sipped her coffee.

"I paid the healer and her secretary extra to not give out that or any information from the appointment to the media. I don't need anymore problems with them."

Aang observed his longtime friend. She had bags under her milky eyes, her normally tidy bun was a mess, and she seemed paler than usual. This is what Katara and he had talked about. Toph is still working herself into the ground and Moo Chee's leaving affected her far more than she led them to believe. Perhaps not so much for her sake, but for the baby's.

"Toph, we've been friends for many years. And even if you don't want us to know, we realize that raising the baby alone is going to be difficult for you. I just want you to know we're here if you need anything. You're part of the family and this little girl will be, too."

The blind bender couldn't hide the tears that welled in her eyes at his words. She was so lucky to have such amazing and unconditional friends; her parents hadn't even called to say they were there for her, no, her mother only yelled at her for being so careless and allowing Moo Chee to leave.

Toph punched Aang's arm, as a show of affection and gratitude. "Thank you, Aang. It means a lot."

Aang nodded and gave her a one sided hug as he finished drinking from his mug and stood up, making his way to the door. "I should head home, it's getting late. But I mean it, Toph. We're here for you both."

With that, the avatar departed from the apartment, leaving the pregnant woman alone with her thoughts.

Aang arrived home just after ten. He was tired and worried for Toph, but at the same time, was relieved Sokka was being so helpful. He'd comforted her, helped her avoid the press, accompanied her to her appointment. Hell he even made a late night run to the market when Toph called him in the middle of the night when she was having cravings.

The airbender chuckled at the memory from only a few days ago.

During an early council meeting earlier that week, Sokka was practically falling asleep at his desk. When Aang later questioned him about it during lunch, the councilman was exhausted and revealed the reason.

"Spirits, Aang. I told Toph to call me anytime if she needed anything. I didn't think she'd call me at two in the morning over pregnancy cravings!" The defeated man shouted and whispered, shooting his hands up in emphasis. "She called yelling, telling me she needed help. I rushed to her place. I thought there was a problem with the baby. And she tells me she's having cravings and wants me to go find a vendor or store that's open at two in the morning, on a week day, and bring her fried seal jerky covered in lots and lots of soy sauce! Like Agni, who the fuck eats that kind of thing? And she doesn't even like soy sauce! When I reminded her of that she just yelled at me to go get her food. So I ran around the center for an hour trying to find it. I finally found this 24 hours a day meat shop. Great place by the way, I bought a lot of jerky for myself. Anyway, I rushed back to her place. She yelled at me some more. She ate all of the jerky I bought and then cried and apologized and fell asleep. I didn't get home til dawn, and that was only to get ready for our damn meeting. Christ, Aang, I can't deal with these pregnancy hormones. I don't know how the hell you put up with this three times!"

The avatar was certain there was more to their friendship than meets the eye. He knew Toph used to have feelings for Sokka. Perhaps they hadn't completely gone away?

And Sokka has gotten much closer to her since Suki left him. They're both lonely and in need of affection. An affection Aang believes they could only give each other.

This child was the key to bringing them together.

Aang stopped by each of his kids' rooms, to kiss them good night and make sure they were tucked in. He spent a little more time than expected. Bumi told his father all about the new boomerang move his uncle had shown him. Kya also begged for Daddy to take her to visit Grandpa and Great Gran Gran soon.

Aang didn't mind though. This was the only true time during the week he could spend with his kids.

Lastly, he stood longingly by Tenzin's crib, watching the fall and rise of his little chest with a heart full of fatherly pride.

What man in the world could leave his own child? Something he created?

As the monk made his way to his bedroom, he was confident of one thing.

Moo Chee didn't want the baby, but Sokka clearly did. And that would deepen his and Toph's relationship to an entire new level.

The man of the house quietly changed into his sleep attire and out of his formal robes, trying to be as quiet as possible as to not awaken his wife, whom had clearly fallen asleep while waiting for him to get home.

"Aang?"

He winced. So much for that idea.

Katara's drowsy mumble drifted up to Aang out of the muted darkness of their bedroom.

"Sorry," he whispered apologetically as he pulled on his sleep pants. "I was trying not to wake you."

"Too late," she mumbled sleepily as she rubbed sleep out of her eyes. She'd heard him enter the room.

He could hear her shifting around in the bed before she turned on the lamp on the nearby night stand.

Katara was clad in her blue night gown and her hair was slightly ruffled from sleep. Her glazed over tired blue eyes looked in his direction as she smiled sleepily. "Long meeting?"

The avatar finished putting on his sleep wear and groaned. "You have no idea. Three hours of listening to an Earth noble complain about the "inequality" of the economies between Ba Sing Sei and Republic City. It's not my fault our system works better."

Slumping forward and laying his exhausted body on the mattress, he sighed contently as the soft pillows and mattress sunk into his muscles. He turned to his woman, grinning. "Hi."

"Hi yourself," she sighed happily in return, moving closer to lay her head on his well toned alabaster chest.

Aang smirked softly and wrapped an arm around his wife, tucking her closer and allowing his bearded chin to rest on her head.

"Did you stop by and see the kids? Bumi wouldn't stop whining that he wanted to tell you all about his new boomerang move."

Aang chuckled and kissed her head, rubbing her arm tenderly with the fingers of his large hand.

"I did. He told me all about how awesome Uncle Sokka is with boomerang. And Bumi wants me to watch him practice tomorrow. Kya also wants to visit the South Pole soon. I told her we would once Tenzin was a little older and you were recovered fully from his birth. He's only a month old."

The waterbender nodded and snuggled further into his chest, feeling his strong and steady heartbeat palpitate against her cheek. Katara has always loved Aang's heartbeat; it's strong and steady like the even beat of a drum, yet soothing and relaxing like her mother's old lullabies.

The avatar shifted the blanket to cover them and he voiced his thoughts. "You know, Sokka would be a great father. The way he is with Bumi. I mean our son practically worships him. I think Toph made a good choice in accepting him as her daughter's father figure. Maybe it'll even turn into something more for them."

"I know my brother will do good by the little girl. But I don't understand why you think they'll be together," his wife replied. "They've always been very close. But Toph was with Saturo then Moo Chee, and Sokka was with Suki for so many years."

Aang shrugged and grinned. "I've always noticed their connection. And this child will be the one to open Sokka's eyes. I've seen the way he's looked at Toph for the past few years. And Toph might fall for him again. They are so close that I don't think they'll be truly happy with anyone else, Sweetie. That's why it didn't work out with anyone else. They're like you and me. Close since childhood and with a connection so deep they can't be with anyone else. It's just taken them this long to figure it out. They just need a little push."

The healer raised an amused eye brow as she shifted herself to lay on top of her avatar, hovering her face over his, smirking lightly. "So now you're the avatar and a love expert, huh?"

The airbender smirked in return as he wrapped strong arms possessively around her. "What can I say? I'm a man of many talents, my fair lady."

Katara chuckled as she ran her hands down his chest. "Well, I guess you'll have to let me in on your plans for getting Toph and Sokka together. I do agree though. They deserve to be happy. They've both gone through a lot of pain with relationships. Maybe they can help heal each other."

Aang rewarded those sweetly fervent words with an equally fervent kiss. Gentle nibbles gradually deepened into hazy passion.

Their lips mashed together and harder as Katara began tugging on the airbender's pants.

He released her lips and panted. "Sweetie, as much as I'd love to, you're still recovering from-"

She put a finger to hips lips, grinning. "A woman waits at least three weeks to a month to have intercourse after giving birth. You were extremely busy after Bumi was born so we didn't do anything for months. And Kya's birth was rough, so it took longer for me to recover. But Tenzin was a smooth pregnancy and birth. And we're over the one month mark. So you're now free to show me your multiple other talents, Avatar Aang."

Aang smirked. "Then I shall show you, Mrs. Avatar."

Katara laughed as they resumed their heated, frenzied kisses.

Soft moans and quiet whispers echoed in tandem with the rustle of hastily removed clothing and disheveled sheets.

The married couple explored one another with love and pleasure for the first time in months.

Around noon the next day, Sokka headed to Toph's apartment with some takeout for lunch. Since he had an hour for lunch and the police chief was taking a personal day from work, he figured she could use some company.

He knocked on the metalbender's door. He waited five minutes before knocking again.

No answer came.

That's odd. She usually senses me coming and shouts to come in.

"Toph?" He called from outside. No answer. Yet the councilman heard a strange gagging sound and grew worried.

What if she was sick? What if she was in need of medical attention?

"Toph, it's Sokka! I'm coming in!"

The politician quickly opened the door, frowning at the fact that she left it unlocked for anyone to stroll in.

He threw the bag of takeout onto the kitchen table and dashed into the bathroom where the noise was coming from.

His face contorted in worry at the sight before him.

Toph was holding her large stomach as she was kneeling in front of the toilet. The poor woman was puking her guts out. That explained why she didn't answer the door, and the gagging noise he'd heard.

Sokka shook his head into clarity and was immediately by her side. He noticed also that she was only wearing her blue bath robe and her long raven hair was unbound. It was clear she didn't intend to work today.

The man leaned over her shaking frame, pulling her hair from her face. He also whispered soft soothing words to her as she retched up the little in her stomach.

"It's okay Toph baby, I'm here. Let it out. You're okay," he murmured as he gently rubbed her lower back. He knew she loved it when he massaged her back.

The woman was suddenly alarmed and soothed by his presence. On one hand, she was relieved to have his comfort. On the other, she didn't him of all people seeing her this vulnerable. He'd already seen enough of that lately.

After a few more agonizing minutes, Toph flushed the toilet and lifted herself up with Sokka's steady hands guiding her large frame.

Resting back on her heels once she was finished, the bender groggily turned in his direction. "I hate this. What're you doing here, Snoozles?"

Chuckling lightly at the pout look on her face, Sokka helped her to her feet and turned on the sink pipe for her. "I know, but this will all be worth it in the end when you have your little girl. That's what Katara's told me anyway. And I brought Huang's takeout so we could have lunch together. I heard you in here so here I am."

"You shouldn't be in here. I look and smell gross," she mumbled as she spilled cool water onto her face, grateful for the cool liquid on her heated skin. She also brushed her teeth to get the taste of throwing everything up out of her mouth.

Sokka chuckled. "It's alright. I saw much worst during Katara's pregnancy."

The off duty police chief finished rinsing out her mouth and turned in his direction with a foxy grin.

"Which one?"

The two friends bursted out laughing. It was their own inside joke about Katara loving to be pregnant all the time.

"Now that's the Chief I know," he said between laughs.

He helped her to the living room couch and they sat down.

"You're still having morning sickness this far along?" Sokka questioned with confusion, curiosity and a hint of worry in his deep baritone voice.

Toph groaned and answered. "Sweetness said it happens to some women. They throw up the whole damn pregnancy. I'm one of the lucky few," she said sarcastically. "That's why I called out of work this morning. I've been hugging my toilet practically since dawn."

The Water Tribe man's eyes softened. He noticed the exhaustion in her face and her discomfort. He'd seen it over the past several months, but only now did he truly stop to analyze how hard this was for her. He didn't notice much before probably because he thought Dumbass would take care of her. Evidently he was wrong.

He noticed the woman hug her stomach and groan in discomfort or pain. He couldn't distinguish which it was exactly.

Sokka leaned on his elbow to better see her and asked concernedly, "Hey, are you okay?"

She gave a short, bitter laugh. "Does it look like I'm okay?" she spat. "My stomach is still in knots and this kid won't stop moving."

The warrior ignored her bitter attitude and softly placed a hand on her stomach, rubbing in circles, coming the unborn child down a bit.

"Do you want me to make you some tea?" He asked. "I know this special one that helps ease morning sickness. It's something my Gran Gran made up and it worked wonders for Katara and Mai while they were pregnant."

Toph nodded and settled to lay down on the couch.

Satisfied with her answer, the councilman trudged to her kitchen and boiled some water to make the tea. As he added some jasmine and a hint of cinnamon he found in one of the cabinets, Sokka stole a glance at the clock at grimaced when he saw it was almost quarter to one.

I have to be back by 1:15. But, he stole another glance at the tired woman in the other room and his heart ached slightly. Toph needs me. I'll just call and say I have something important to attend to. It's true, anyway.

Sokka discretely used her phone and called his secretary, telling her to cancel his next appointment, for he wouldn't be back to the office until two o'clock or later. He was busy with a personal matter.

He then took the steaming cup to his best friend and admired her relaxed form, much as he had the morning after she'd broken the news to him about Moo Chee leaving.

She's so beautiful. She thinks she looks gross. That's the hormones talking. Toph's beautiful no matter what she wears.

"Are you just gonna stand there Pony Tail? Or are you gonna bring the tea over?" Toph's voice broke him out of his dazed state.

Blushing at his indiscretion, Sokka cleared his throat and handed the cup over to Toph as she sat back up.

"It should help you feel better. It helped my sister and Mai. They both said their morning sickness got less violent after drinking this every morning."

Toph nodded and she blew on the steaming liquid and took a small sip, content with the exotic and strange flavor. "Thanks, Sokka."

The warrior nodded and got up to serve their food. "I brought noodles and chicken for lunch. Not too heavy. You hungry?"

The bender sipped her tea. "I threw up last night's dinner and haven't eaten all day. What do you think? Bring the damn noodles over here!"

She sipped at the hot tea carefully and nestled deeper in soft material of her couch.

She downed the rest of her tea setting the empty cup on the coffee table, already feeling slightly better.

As she heard Sokka rustling through a bag in the other room, she couldn't help but compare how he took care of her as opposed to the Dark One.

Moo Chee would cringe whenever she woke up with morning sickness. He never held her hair or helped her in the bathroom, he'd just ask if she was okay afterward. He never brought her food when she had cravings. Come to think of it, he'd never even touched her belly to feel the child in the seven months he was with her during the pregnancy.

Yet Sokka was always there. He didn't mind her raging temper and eased her discomfort. He rushed to get her food to appease her cravings right away, no questions asked. He bothered to stop by during a busy work day to make sure she was alright and held her hair when she threw up. He even voluntarily felt the baby and was genuinely marveled at feeling a child that wasn't even his.

He made her feel so many things Moo Chee was never able to.

Sokka made her feel loved, cared for, and safe.

I don't need a man to take care of me, she told herself. But Snoolzes doing it doesn't seem so bad. Maybe it's even possible that he could-

"No. That'll never happen," she whispered with dampened spirits. "He's only being a good friend. He's that kind of guy. He feels bad for his poor pregnant best friend who got dumped. Besides, why would he ever love me?"

The warrior brought the bentos full of noodles and passed some chopsticks to Toph.

They ate feverently in silence for a few minutes, savoring the delicious meal before them.

Finally, Toph spoke. "Don't you need to be at work soon?"

Sokka chewed on his chicken, opting to tell the truth. She could sense if he lied anyway. Besides, he's always been a terrible liar.

He washed the chicken down with some leechee juice before answering. "I called and cancelled my next appointment. I wanted to have lunch with you and you weren't looking too good. Besides I could use a long lunch break. Been a rough week. I'll be back in time for my economics meeting."

Toph furrowed her eye brows and punched his arm. "You didn't have to cancel work for my sake, Snoozles! I've been sick before. I don't need you here babying me all day. I'm not weak."

The councilman rubbed his sore arm and placed his now empty bento box on the coffee table. He turned in her direction and softly placed his large hand over Toph's.

She flushed at the contact and jerked her head away so he wouldn't see it. Fortunately for her, Sokka's eyes were focused on the pregnant swell of her belly as he spoke.

"Toph," he whispered. "I know you're not weak. On the contrary, you're the strongest woman I've ever met, inside and out. But I want to help you. Can't you understand that? I'm not doing it because I think you're weak or helpless. I'm not here because I feel obligated to or because I pity you. It's because I care about you. I want to help you. So let me. And besides," he said with a gentle smile as he rubbed her tummy affectionately, catching her off guard. "I'll be this little girl's father figure. So it's only fitting that I help you care for her starting now."

Toph looked away, vulnerable. She cursed her hormones. She could tell every word that fell from his mouth was sincere; her seismic sense and personal knowledge of him attested to that.

Sokka was caught off guard by her stony silence and removed his hand from her stomach. "I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to cross any boundaries. I know she's not mine, I just-"

"No," the bender shook her head. "It's not that. You've been a huge help. Thank you. Keep doing what you're doing. I've just, been thinking."

The warrior nodded. "What?"

She raised her head in his direction, doubt and anxiety filling her eyes.

"What if I can't be a good mother to her?" Toph whispered. "What if she's like me?"

Sokka scooted closer, confused. "What do you mean like you?"

She fought the tears stinging her eyes. "I was born blind, Sokka. I've been told that can be genetic. What if she's blind like me?"

He placed a hand on her shoulder. "She won't be. The healer said she couldn't detect any abnormalities in your daughter."

"They didn't detect it when I was in my mom either," she countered. "Yet look at me. So what if she's born like me?"

Sokka's heart ached. Did Toph not know how truly incredible she was?

He pressed his large palm softly on her stomach, feeling the little Beifong move.

He smiled at his best friend, admiration and honesty shining in his brilliant blue eyes.

"No matter what, she'll be amazing," he murmured into her face. "Just like you."

Toph was stunned and swallowed hard. He was so close, his hot breath fanning across her face. His breath smelled of the tangy chicken they'd just eaten.

Sokka was mesmerized by her beauty. Her milky eyes they expressed so much, her beautiful yet delicate features. His eyes were locked on her full, pink swollen lips.

Lips he'd imagined tasting more times in the past year that he'd care to admit. He's always assumed it was because he was lonely since Suki left and it was just physical attraction and friendly affection.

Now, he wasn't so sure.

Her lips were so close. It would be so easy. All he had to do was reach out and claim them with his own.

But he knew he'd be ruining a beautiful friendship if he did that. He'd be crossing all boundaries.

Besides, why would Toph ever want something beyond friendship with him?

He was just plain old Snoozles, her buddy.

So instead, Sokka leaned up and planted an affectionate kiss to her soft cheek.

Toph's cheeks burned and she felt her skin was on fire where his lips touched.

He pulled back and awkwardly cleared his throat. "I should go. I need to get back and draft up my reports for that economics meeting at three. And you need to rest, Chief. Make sure you drink water and get lots of rest."

The bender nodded. "Yes Mom."

He chuckled and headed to the kitchen to clean up after their lunch.

Toph laid back down on the sofa, now full and pain free, even her little one was calm.

Something about having Sokka around always made her and her child feel better.

Her thoughts went to his words.

"No matter what, she'll be amazing, just like you."

The bender felt sleep sweep her away as those words kept replaying in her mind.

Sokka came back to the living room and smiled at the sight of his friend now asleep and pain free.

He turned on his heel and walked to her bedroom, grabbing her comforter. Sokka didn't have the heart to wake or move her; she looked so content and at peace.

He silently walked over to the couch and tossed the soft blanket over her slumbering form.

As he pulled the soft blanket up to her shoulders, he brushed his lips across her forehead in a gentle gesture of affection.

Sokka caught a whiff of her scent as he slowly pulled away. He could smell her shampoo. Mmm... Minty fresh like rain. It mixed well with her natural scent. The warrior decided what best described it was the smell of the forest earth after a rain storm. It was a clean, crisp scent, and he craved it, almost as much as he craved her touch - almost.

The councilman backed away, blinking rapidly. Her what?

When the hell did I suddenly want Toph that way? Get your head together, man!

Not wasting anymore time as he noticed the time, he pulled a lock of raven hair out of her face.

"Sleep well, Toph." He looked at her stomach. "Bye baby girl, take care of your momma for me."

As the tribesman quietly exited the apartment, he failed to notice the earthbender shifting in her sleep.

He also didn't notice the content smile on her face as she slept.
