Chapter 4
Shane was upset, throwing things in the air because of my little spill. Nate was trying to calm him down while me … well, I was hanging from a hook because Shane had this genius idea to treat me like a coat. He is such a villain, and Nate was actually on his side.
I kept hearing my jacket tear slowly as my weight got to it.
If I fall, I fall like the rain.
I fall like a little bird that got out of its nest when mama birdie told it not to.
"OUCH!"
"Are you okay Jay?"
""Yeah, I am. but my arm. . . oh my arm aches. Wait, its my ankle. Shane you stupid bird!" I say all this while checking for broken bones.
Nate throws Shane an evil look. We share a look as he leaves.
"Prank?" Nate asks.
"Definitely!" I say, nodding.
"All you Camp Rockers, please report to the Dining to meet with Ella for Wardrobe fittings." That is Barron over the PA. I already got my fittings, so I just hustle my little ones over to the rendezvous. Yes, I know big words too! Nate is trying to find Caitlyn who apparently is missing. I wonder where she is?
"I thought you have Dana now," I say to Nate who shrugs his shoulders and goes ahead to flatter Peggy about her voice and how her job has helped some voiceless Czech girl be better. I know her, she has this black hair that is always in curls and yes, she plays a cello. Pretty well I must admit. I was in the same classes with her when I started here. Now she is one of the best at playing the guitar, doing background voice, playing cello and the drums. She is not a dancer, but has some really good ideas. She has been working with the kids.
"Hey Jay!"Mitchie calls, smiling at me as she drags an unhappy Caitlyn who looks exhausted.
"Hey Mitchie!" I smile at her."Caitlyn, how are you? Nate's been looking all over for you."
She mumbles something under her breath and Mitchie throws her a dirty look.
"Are you okay Cait?" I ask, touching her hand. she throws me a look before heading over to Nate and starting to talk to him. their conversation soon escalates to a yelling match though.
"What's her problem?" I ask Mitchie.
"Apparently, Luke told her that Nate and Dana are together and he did it out of spite. After he told her last night that he likes her and he wants them to get together."
That is a HUGE mess.
At that exact moment, Barron, Sander and Ella walk in to find chaos. I see her look at me in confusion, so I decide to shoot her a text.
Meet me out in 5-Jason
Ok~Ella.
"Well, that is a complicated relationship, Nate and Caity, right?" Ella asks me after I tell her about the two.
"Yeah. I guess. About relationships, I …"
"I am so scared of being in relationships. I mean, my ex cheated on me with my best friend in school."
Oh, great, there goes my chance of asking her to be my girlfriend.
"Whats going on in there?" Brown and Mitchie's mum walk in on us. Ella and I exchange looks.
"Nate and Caitlyn are fighting."
"What about?" Connie asks, looking surprised.
"Oh, I don't know," Ella says, looking at me. I shake my head and Brown sighs before walking in to the hall with Connie hot on his trail. We follow, ready to witness more drama before going for rehearsals.
"The two of you, in my office, NOW!" Brown says, pointing at them both. "I really hate having to be uncool, Caitlyn, you of all people know that."
"Shane, Jason, Mitchie, follow me," he says, and tells everyone to disperse. They all leave and we head out to find the two in his office, looking away from each other.
"Okay, lay it on me."
"He started it! He lied to me but he is secretly seeing Dana Turner! He is such a scheming liar. A little wuss . . . "
"She started yelling at me. I don't know what her problem is. I can't take …"
They were both talking at the same time. We looked at Brown.
"Okay, one at a time. Caitlyn, Nate, stop talking NOW!"
They both stopped after throwing each other dirty looks.
"Caitlyn?"
"Nate is playing me, guess with who? THE ENEMY'S DAUGHTER!"
"Nate?"
"I like Caity, and I like Dana. How am I supposed to make up my mind?"
"You are just supposed to!" Caity says, huffing. Her face is tomato red.
"I am a growing boy, and a rock star, can't I have what I want?" Nate asks.
"Pop star actually," Mitchie and Shane say at the same time. They exchange a look. Weird.
"Clearly, there has been a breach of contract over here. Nate, until you decide who you want, no seeing any of these girls. You are not even allowed to talk to any of them." Brown spoke, earning a little yell from Caitlyn.
"But…" Nate started.
"But, you are to take anger management classes with Cait every night after dinner till the eve of the Final Jam. Okay?"
"But…" Caitlyn started.
"But nothing, Caitlyn, rules are rules."
"Uh-huh, feel the pinch yet?" Nate said, trying to make her feel bad. Caitlyn merely shook her head and walked away, muttering to herself.
Brown turned to us, looking at each one of us before sending Nate out. We stood, staring back at him, thinking of these two who were fighting like people in battle. It was sad, really. I always thought that they were each others' muse. I know Nate can be kind of a jerk, and most times he gets the pretty girls because he is lead singer and Shane is dating, but he has awesome advice when it comes to wooing women.
Of late he never really listens to anyone, but where Caitlyn is involved, I am gonna try make him listen.
But first, I have to go bird-watching with Elle.
"So, what is your favorite bird?" I asked Ella as we sat at the dock, watching the swallows fly back to their nests at sundown.
Remember that date I told you about? It was happening. Ella and I had sat together at lunch, and she bore with the kids who were all sweet but anytime she turned away from them and me, they made kissy faces and wrote little notes. Eventually, I had to send them away, but not before they acted all cute with her. She was really good with them, promising to dress them too on the D-Day.
We had then watched Caitlyn and Nate get into another fight as they were doing practice for vocals about how he was dancing. Nate started it by bringing a drum set to practice, claiming that the only way he was gonna rehearse was if he drummed on his drum set. She told him he had to wait and had the set pushed out, much to Nate's fake-anger. Then he got the steps wrong on purpose.
Finally,. He grabbed a water gun and shot at her. Caitlyn started yelling at him, telling him that it was very hard for her to maintain her hair, and he was so getting it!
"Thinking about them too, huh?"
I turned to look at her,"Do you think they will ever admit that they still like each other?"
"Well, they never exactly dated, because according to Caitlyn, they thought to try out a friendship that was more than friends but not dating. Things were going fine, they were both falling for each other, he asked her out, she went, he asked her to be his girl, Caitlyn freaked, and ever since, its been like a war zone. They find ways to irritate each other."
I listened, rubbing her back gently. She leaned into me.
"Nate has changed, a lot."
"I know, he has. He was not like that. he is so cute, but not cuter than you."
Did she just admit that I am cute?
"Do you think I am cute?" I asked, looking at her in shock. She blushed. I laughed, and kissed her temple.
"Yes, you are…"
"Am I cute enough for you to agree to be my girlfriend?" I asked, my eyes closed as I awaited the worst.
The little woodpecker up the tree was unusually quiet. I could hear the waves lapping at the shore quietly. Then I felt her lips on mine for the first time.
I must say I was quite surprised, but I took the initiative and kissed her back, just as gently.
"Is that a 'yes' then?" I asked when we broke apart.
She looked down. "Umm, can I like think about it first?"
I felt my heart crash and burn just a little bit, but I nodded. I knew she wouldn't say yes, but at least she didn't outright refuse. Right?
I think I need to find Nate, because I am so confused. She kissed me, but said to think about it? hmmph!
