To my beautiful daughter, Sophia:
You don't want to be like me. That's the first thing I want you to know. My life has been built on mistakes. The greatest mistake of all being leaving your mother. She was the light of my life when I was with her. Every day I wanted to kick myself for leaving. You asked why I left… well its truth time I guess. I honestly left because I was stupid. I wasn't graduating. I was just holding your mother back. We had gotten into a fight. I wanted to fight for her back, but I knew I wasn't good enough for her. I used my father's reappearance as an out, and I ran like the coward I am. I always run when things get tough. But, I won't that happen this time. I promise.
As far as where I went, it was Veince Beach at first. That didn't last long. Then it was Seattle, Colorado Springs, Las Vegas, Cleveland, New York, Chicago, Boston, and finally Philadelphia. I have been in Philly for a little more than ten years. I stayed in Philly because it was time to grow up and build a life. As far as moving on, I never even tried. I would see a girl somewhere and suddenly all I would see was your mother. So, don't worry there is no wicked stepmother or evil step siblings in this story. I did open a publishing company with some friends, that's my career. I have written two novels. Don't bother getting excited they aren't much.
Lastly, about this ball. I would be honored if you let me be your dad that night. I am sorry that you got the short straw in this whole thing. You and your mother deserve so much better than me, but please just give me a chance to love you. Once you get passed the rough edges, there is a great person in here. Your mother unearthed it once.
Signed Simply,
Jess
He just folded the piece of paper and looked up. The clock on the wall told him it was almost time to get up and here he had even went to sleep. He couldn't bring himself to go to sleep. He just got up and walked into the kitchen. The coffee pot was sitting out on the table. He opened up the cabinet above it to find plates. He just kept going down the line till he finally found the cabinet filled with the coffee mugs. It was over the toaster. He should have known that the Gilmore's never made sense. He used to call it the Lorelai system. He just grabbed one out. He laughed to himself when he read the saying printed on the mug: If playing tuba was easy it would be called playing football. It must be Sophia's. "You better put that back before she gets home, she is very particular about her Tuba mugs." Rory's voice hit him with a bitter twist. She never was the morning person he was.
"Well, good morning to you too." He replied as he turned around to look at her. She was still in her clothes from last night. "Let me guess you were awake all night?" He asked as he went to grab a coffee cup.
"Not that one." She replied as he touched a blue one. "It's Caleb's. It's a really long story." She said as she walked next to him and grabbed another cup off the top shelf.
"Sophie said the same thing." He said as he said as he filled up the two cups. He was about to ask for the story when the young boy walked in from what had to be the garage.
"Morning." He said as walked over to the cabinet like it was no big deal. In his mind he was saying 'yeah this got harder to deal with'. He just watched as the younger boy grabbed the blue mug and moved towards the coffee pot.
"Morning. You ready for that math test you have today?" Rory asked him as she sat down at the table. The boy just nodded poured coffee into his cup. "Did you study this time?" She asked.
"Yes, Soph made sure I did. Oh and Kirk told me to tell you that he wasn't doing the paper run today. He said you and Babette can go to the stand like everyone else." The younger boy said as he continued to make himself breakfast.
"I am going to take a walk." He said as he dumped his coffee in the sink. "I left a letter on the desk can you make sure it makes it way to Sophia." He said as he looked at Rory. She just nodded.
"Is there anything you need from the store?" The younger boy asked with a piece of bread in his mouth. With that he had to leave. He was not ready of the overly present boyfriend. He just starting to process the daughter.
