As the swarm of boys drew closer, the more they stumbled and faltered with fatigue. Jack marched at the front, keeping the boys in line as if he was in charge of them, he showed little mercy. His efforts to make the boys obey him seemed promising; not for long. A boy with dark hair, fell out of the formation, plummeting into the sand; he had fainted from exhaustion.
"Merridew… um… Merridew!" one of the boys called, in a desperate attempt to alert his leader.
"What!" Jack bellowed.
"It's Simon, he passed out!" chanted a different boy, backing up his companion.
"He's always doing that," Jack stated gruffly, "Keep walking, he can catch up with us!"
Regretfully, the boys quickly followed their instructor and glanced sadly at the poor being, referred to as Simon.
Once happy that the others were obeying him, Jack snapped his head back around, facing forward. That's when he saw me.
He beamed, his personality transforming from a dictator to a sentimentalist. He no longer cared for leading the group, instead he came charging towards me, grabbing me by the shoulders and flinging his arms around me.
Ralph, who was standing beside me, looked over in disgust. He put a protective arm around my shoulder, helping me to escape Jacks squeeze.
"What's your problem?" Ralph screamed. "You cannot, just go around grabbing random girls as you please, especially when you don't know them!" His eyes were lit with fury, as if he was jealous.
"I do as I please!" Jack retaliated. "Besides, what has it got to do with you? Are you Nell's boyfriend or something? What am I saying? She would never go out with someone as pitiful as you!"
Jack stared at me, silently asking for my approval. I glanced at Ralph who was clearly embarrassed by Jack's remark, attempting to think of a good comeback; it was impossible.
In a desperate attempt to break the tension, I decided to introduce them to each other. "Um, so Ralph this is Jack, and Jack this is Ralph. I met Ralph in the airport, and Jack sat next to me on the plane, so please don't argue because I do not belong to either of you... Or anyone!"
"I don't care what his name is, where is the man with the trumpet?" Jack broke in. I looked at him blankly and so did Ralph. What trumpet?
At this point Piggy decided to burst into the conversation. "That was no trumpet! It was a conch! Ralph blew it to call a meeting… it worked because…"
"Pipe down fatty, no one asked you!" Jack madly interrupted.
"His name isn't fatty!" sniggered Ralph, "His name is Piggy!"
The surrounding area filled with laughter and chanting 'Piggy, Piggy'- Boys were dancing and singing, so much that even Ralph looked slightly guilty. Mortification covered Piggy's circular face, he once eager eyes, filled with misery and sadness. I put a hand on his shoulder and he nuzzled into my neck, preventing the others from seeing him cry.
"Just between you and me, what is your real name?" I pried.
"Andrew, my name is Andrew!" he beamed.
Once the commotion had died down, Jack relieved the choir boys and allowed them to take off their cloaks and caps. The sound of many relieved sighs rushed into my ears. After a while, Jack walked back towards me, cradling my injured face in his hand.
"Did Ralph do this to you?" he said roughly, though I could sense he was worried.
"No, of course not! I crashed on a rock when I fell out of the plane." I was slightly irritated by the idea that he thought Ralph had harmed me. Maybe he had only said it for effect.
He could tell that I was annoyed because he looked away gazing into the distance with embarrassment.
"Now that we are all here… we need someone who can be in charge!" said Andrew enthusiastically, "A chief is what we need, any volunteers?"
"I should be chief, I'm 16, the oldest here, and the tallest, and head chorister, I would be the best chief, don't you agree?"
"What about Ralph?" A littlen piped up.
"Okay, then we will have a vote!" announced Ralph cheerfully. "Those who want Jack as chief, raise your hands, now!"
All of the boys from the choir raised their hands as well as a few littlens who were unaware of what was going on, so just copied the choristers.
"Okay, and who votes for me to be chief?" Ralph continued calmly.
The majority of the boys and myself waved our hands in the air, I could see Jack glaring at me with jealousy, but that wasn't going to stop me. I caught Piggy's eye and realised he was still contemplating whether to vote for Ralph. Reluctantly, he gave in, something told me that he feared Jack; I wasn't sure why.
"Well then its decided I will be chief… well at least until we are saved…If someone comes to save us." Ralph's words echoed across the clearing, silence fell upon us. He was right, what if we were stuck here forever. I couldn't do this, I wished I had never got on that plane, all I wanted was to be back with Mama.
I became overwhelmed with this feeling of loss - as if I could never maintain what I had always known.
My pulse quickened and my brain became inaudible, my thought process clouded by doubt and fear. Trapped within myself. Everything blurred from my vision, no longer able to focus, my figure plummeted to the ground into nothingness.
I woke sometime later, I tried sitting up but my surroundings shook and I felt sickly. I wiped my groggy eyes with my palm which was tinged with cold sweat. It was already dark; I could only picture the shape of a boy who guarding me carefully.
"What happened?" I started, whilst choking on my own bitter saliva.
The guard twisted around to face me, I had definitely seen his face before, yet he still appeared unfamiliar. "You fainted, so Jack carried you here, you have been unconscious all day!"
"Wait, you were the boy who fainted earlier, Simon right?" I blurted, realising where I had met him.
"Yeh, you're right! I've been watching you all day, whilst Jack and Ralph explored the island. I should go and tell them you woke up." Simon admitted.
"Actually, can you just stay here for a while," I don't know exactly why I said this, however, there was something tranquil about him.
It seemed like this scenario was natural to him, nonetheless, everything was just as new to him as it was to everyone else. His dark eyes reflected in the moon light. Eventhough we had just met, I was desperate to know his story. How come he merged so well into nature?
Simon, studied my face with equal curiosity. He seemed to be around 12 or maybe older.
For the first time in my entire life, I felt like a mother, I wanted to care for him. Actually, I was wrong, he was like the younger brother I had never had, but always longed for.
I was amazed how quickly I could make assumptions on people. I had become consumed in a person I knew nothing about, though I could tell there was something special about him. He could see things that I couldn't.
I beckoned him to sit next to me. He obeyed me. I rested my head on his lap and fell to sleep. There was no need for an explanation, he understood whatever craziness was rushing through my mind. Perhaps more than I understood myself.
"Thank you for watching over me Simon." I drifted off into the land of slumber.
Hiya again! Okay so, yeh I gave Piggy a name, I just felt like he needed one, something to show the connection between himself and Nellie. Also I hope the ending is okay, I wanted her to think of Simon as her brother/guardian, though I'm not sure if I did this too soon. I'm just not sure on this entire chapter, but it has been over a week since my last upload, I hope it is okay! Thank you all for your support, comments and feedback are appreciated.
Bye bye x
