SNOWED IN

Toothless glided low and silently through the trees. We both searched intently, scanning for any sign of her. Her. Who was this her? I thought more and more about what Killer Frost had said: she lived inside Caitlin, even though she was a totally different person, and came out whenever Caitlin was scared or angry. I recalled the anger I saw in Killer Frost's white, icy eyes. I remembered Killer Frost saying she could feel Caitlin fighting. I could only imagine how hard Caitlin must have been fighting to keep Killer Frost down in the days leading up to the wedding. I wondered how long Caitlin had been dealing with this. Her whole life? Maybe. Or maybe it was just in the last few years, or even months. Was Killer Frost a meat-human? Did that make Caitlin a meta-human? No, it wouldn't.

A thousand more questions whirled inside my head as I shivered. Killer Frost's presence in Berk had somehow made it colder. That was why, even though it was predicted to be a warm day, cold winds blew through the cold air and I wished I had brought a cloak or layer of some sort.

I wished.

I wished so many things. I wish none of this had ever happened. I wish I could have had a beautiful marriage with Astrid, one that was honest and mutual, one that didn't involve psycho ice-throwers. I wished I could have proposed to Astrid in the Cove, where she found out about Toothless, where we had so many memories together. I wished I could fly away from Berk on Toothless. I wished Astrid and I had gotten together sooner so we could have had more happiness. But I had been too busy being a doofus. I wished my mother was still around. She could have helped me through this. She could have made it better. I wish my knowledge of dragons was enough to satisfy my thirst for true love. What Dad had said was true: There's nothing like Young Love.

Toothless gently touched down and his whole body shook. I was thrown to the freezing ground as an arctic wind ruffled my hair. I knew Caitlin hadn't come back yet. Killer Frost was still around.

My teeth began to chatter and goosebumps formed all around me.

Not only was she still in Caitlin's body...

She was here.

In that moment, fear made my blood run colder than the air. I spun in all directions, desperately trying to find Killer Frost before she found me.

"You won't win."

Toothless and I spun around to see not just one, but two blonde women step out of the trees. Killer Frost and...

Astrid.

Both women were bloodied and beaten. Ice spread across Astrid's clothes and formed icicles on her hair and skin. Killer Frost's hair was a mess and what remained of the wedding dress was torn.

"Astrid!" I called. I drew my sword and Toothless spread his wings in a threatening manner, opening his mouth. A purple glow began to form in his throat, getting bright and brighter.

Killer Frost was cornered.

"If you make on move, Toothless will shoot." I told her. "His blast is faster and stronger than your ice." Her head slowly turned towards me.

"Yes, but if you kill me, Caitlin dies too."

I hesitated, and so did Toothless and Astrid. It made sense. If we kill one, we kill the other.

"Now, Stormfly!"

A blue blur sped in front of me and I heard Killer Frost scream. When I looked up, I saw her in Stormfly's huge claws. Her snow-white hair was flailing around her paler than usual face. I jumped on the saddle and opened my mouth to call to Astrid to get on Toothless so we could fly her up to Stormfly. I didn't need to. She followed me onto Toothless' saddle and he opened his wings. We were perfectly in sync. We could practically read each other's minds, in battle and in peace.

"SCREECH!!!"

Stormfly yowled in pain. At first glance everything seemed fine, but then I noticed ice spreading across the Nadder's scales in waves.

"Stormfly!" Yelled Astrid. To my terror, she stood up on Toothless' back, ready to jump.

We were too far away.

She would not make it.

"Astrid, wait!" I screamed, but it didn't matter.

She jumped.

I think she knew she wouldn't make it. I also think she didnt't care. And I knew she didn't expect Stormfly to fight through the pain and dive underneath her a split second before Astrid hit the rocks.

A split second before she died.

Stormfly couldn't handle it, and Killer Frost flew out of her huge claws. She, to, began to fall.

"Toothless, dive!" I yelled, remembering what Killer Frost told us: If you kill me, Caitlin dies too.

Turns out, we didn't need to dive.

Just before hitting the ground, a blue mist formed around her hands and she pushed them in front of her. Somehow, a horizantal wall of ice came between her and the frozen ground. Toothless and I were still on our way down when she righted herself. She tore across the ice, continuing the path as she went. Killer Frost was going way too fast for a tired Night Fury with a rider or an injured Deadly Nadder with a reckless rider, so we both touched down.

"Astrid." I ran over to her and placed my hands on her shoulders. "Are you alright?" To my dismay, she shrugged me off.

"I'm fine. We need to get Stormfly to safety."

Stormfly could walk on her own, thankfully, but it was a slow way back to town and Astrid seemed really shaken up by the jump.

"Astrid, what was that?"

"What was what?"

"That jump. You knew you couldn't make it."

"But I did."

We fell silent for a few minuted before Astrid spoke up.

"I guess adrenaline took over. I wasn't thinking, wasn't feeling. I wasn't feeling anything, not even desperation. I just felt the jump."

"But -"

"Hiccup." And that was enough to shut me up. We walked back to Berk in silence.

"Hiccup! What happened?" Dad demanded. I told him the story, tweaking the details of the jump, while Astrid went to get a now limping Stormfly help.

"So Killer Frost got away again?" Chief Arp asked.

"Yeah." I answered, suddenly remembering something she had said. "What did she mean when she said you knew about this?" I asked Chief Arp.

"Are you suspicious?" He asked, shocked. "I had no clue about this until today. I still barely have a clue about it now." I expected him to walk away or do something else to arouse suspicion. He didn't.

"Don't worry, Chief Arp." My father intervened. "No one here suspects you of anything."

"Yeah." I agreed. "Killer Frost probably just said that to make us not trust you. I'm sorry." I held out my hand. I know, I know, you're going to think I was lying. Fact is, I knew Killer Frost had just done that to cause unrest.

"Thank you. I'm sorry too." We shook hands and smiled.
