Wish Upon a Star

Chapter 3

I sighed as I looked out of the plane window. I was stuck sitting next to Zero and let's be frank, he's not the best conversationalist. There's only so long you can look at clouds before the novelty wears off. I sighed again and plugged my ear-phones in, looking out the window once again. Seriously after this I don't wanna see another cloud for at least the next thirty years.

What felt like hours went by, thought it was probably only fifteen minutes. I sighed yet again and closed my eyes, hoping that sleep would come. It did but I wish it hadn't.

I walked down the main hall of my house; well it looked like it only tinted dark red. I heard a scream from behind me and turned to look. There my mother was, standing with blood all over her.

"It's your fault I'm dead, all you fault," She said in a rasping voice that hardly seemed to be her's.

I turned and ran, trying to get away from the haunting words but they seemed to follow me.

"All your fault, all your fault," the voices whispered. As I ran the hall became tinted a dirty yellow colour.

"Well look what the cat dragged in. Welcome to hell, puss puss," It was Aiden this time. He too was covered in his own blood.

"Shut up, you're not real!"

This time the hall tinted dark blue.

"Where were you Topaz? You were supposed to protect them," My father rasped, reaching out as if too hit me.

"So were you! What kind of man let's his wife and children be murdered!" I ran passed him further down the hall, hoping to find the end. Hands came up through the floor, grabbing at my ankles and tripping me over. Any tinting vanished.

"Why didn't you come for me? Why didn't you save me? Where were you Topaz! Because of you we all died," Ryan said. I'd been dreading meeting him, I half hopped I wouldn't. Half, I knew it'd come eventually.

"No. It-it wasn't my fault. I came down as soon as I head Mum scream," I cried looking up at him, tears streaming down my cheeks. He was covered in blood, not just his own but Aiden and our mother's as well. The colours of their halls covered him. Did he stay and try to save them, help them get away?

"Oh Ryan," I said and he began to fade away into the white light behind him.

"Ryan!" I shouted and sat bolt upright in my seat. Shhing came from all directions of the darkened plane.

I looked to my right to see Zero fast asleep. Well I think he was at least before my little outburst. His lilac eyes opened. He reached out and held my hand in his own.

"Topaz it'll be OK. With time the pain will fade," He said comfortingly although even in the dark I could see in his eyes that he was only saying it to make me feel better. He didn't think the pain would fade, not for me or for him.

"I hope so," I said, burring my tear sodden face in his shoulder. His body stiffened as though he didn't expect the action but then he relaxed and slowly stroked my hair and ears, lulling me back into an un-irrupted sleep.

"Topaz," a voice whispered. I groaned in response. I'm not a morning person and I don't wake up quickly. "We're landing soon," the voice continued. I opened my eyes to be greeted by brutal, unforgiving sunlight.

"Morning Zero," I said groggily.

"Morning sleepy head. You have put your seat belt on; the plane's going to land soon,"

"You woke me up for that?" I said unhappily and put on my seat belt.

The air-port was massive, there were people running every which-way and it took all of my concentration not to get distracted and loose Kaien. We got our luggage; well Yuki, Zero and Kaien did, then we picked up Kiba. Who looked a little worse for wear after the long flight.

He looked at me mowing unhappily, wanting to get out of the small cat carrier.

"I'll let you out as soon as I can," I said to him. He stopped meowing, happy with the answer he got.

The three of us went outside and Yuki and I fiddled with the luggage while the Headmaster called someone, presumably from the school, to pick us up. Zero just stood there being emo.

Inside the car I was silent, content to let Yuki talk her lips off and occasionally grunt a reply. That was until she asked me something that on reflection was an inevitable question.

"What was your family like?"

"Yuki," Zero hissed.

"No, Zero it's okay, I'm gonna have to talk about them sometime," I said, "my family was great, I had a mother and father who loved my, despite my 'differences', a little brother who I loved more than my own life and on top of all that I had the best friend someone like me could ever dare to wish for,"

"I thought you had two brothers," The Headmaster said.

"haha yeah I did. Aiden he was, in a word, unpleasant, he acted like he hated me; called me names like 'Puss Puss' and 'Kitty' but I learned to love him despite all that. People like me, life is full of people who think you're a monster or hate you for just existing. I loved him, he was my brother. I was supposed to protect him, all of them,"

"It wasn't your fault Topaz," he said.

"Yes it was. Ever since I was born it was my job to protect my family, it's my duty as the Neko,"

"Topaz even both my parents couldn't defeat her and they were trained vampire hunters," Zero said.

"Yeah?" I asked.

"Yeah," He said. I smiled.

"Topaz we're here!" The headmaster said as the car pulled up in front of what looked like a collection of small castles.

"This is a school?" I asked in awe, getting out of the car.

"Welcome to Cross Academy," he said dramatically. Thunder and lightning clashed in the distance.

"Does it always do that?" I asked.

"Not usually," he said, "Come on let's get inside before it rains."

I sat on the window sill of my new room, my knees pulled up to my chest. It had been two weeks since I first arrived at Cross Academy and it was raining again. I looked out the window at the pouring rain. I'd always liked rain, the sound it made on the corrugated iron roof, the time I'd spend by the window with a book, some hot chocolate and my feather doona; but now it just makes me sad, It forces me to remember the things I've lost, the things I'll never get back. A tear slipped down my cheek, followed by another, then another. I hid my face in knees as tears began to flow like rivers down my cheeks. I let out a sob. The complete unimaginable horror of a couple of days ago filled my heart and mind.

"You know crying really doesn't flatter you," A voice said.

"Do I look like I care?"

"No, but I do."

I looked up and my heart skipped more than a beat.

"TOBY!" I cried.

"Howdy Neko. Been a while hasn't it?" She said, pulling me into a hug.

We stood there for I don't know how long but eventually I stopped crying. Honestly I think I stopped being sad about half way through and continued crying out of happiness.

"How the hell'd you get here?" I asked once we had sat down on my bed.

"It's a long story," she said. I looked at her no way you're getting out like that my look said. "Fine. Well a few days ago my Mum got a call from her boss, saying that his Daughter hadn't come out of her room for about a week, I'm gonna kill you for that later by the way, and that he wanted me to come and talk some scene into her, we were both so confused until he said your name. So here I am."

"Okay that tells me nothin'. Wait your mum works here, the school I mean? This is where she was transferred?"

"Yes and yes."

"Well that explains how he found you so easy. I said ages that I wanted to see you again but I didn't think it'd happen like this," I said, happy to see my best friend again.

"Topaz, I'm so sorry about what happened to your family, I'm sorry I wasn't there to help you, I'm sorry I couldn't do anything until now," She said pulling me into another hug, "It wasn't your fault. You didn't make whoever-it-was kill your family. You didn't ask for them to be killed nor did you want to be saddled with that silly 'Protect your family even if you're only a kid' thing."

"You're right," I said, realising this for the first time.

"Now I'm fairly sure that seeing you ain't been out in a week you defiantly haven't gone sightseeing."

"Well no…"

"Good then let's go shopping," she said.

"But-"

"Butts are for pooping," she cut me off, "Now get your stuff I'm kidnapping you." I sighed and grabbed the backpack Kaien gave me. Tobuse stood up, looked me up and down. "And get changed while you're at it, I will not take you out in 'Give Up On Life Pants'."

I did as I was told and ended up in the clothes the Kaien gave me the first day we met.

The two of is walked out of my room and into the lounge.

"I'mgoingtoToby'sbye!" I said as I ran out the door laughing manically.

"We'llbebackinacoupledays!" Tobuse said exiting in the same manner.

I stuck my head through the door, "Can I have some money? Toby's gonna make me buy clothes." I half lied. He smiled slightly and handed me 10,000 yen (that's about $110 In Australia and $95 in the US) I laughed evilly, "Arigato Gozaimasu!" I said and removed my head from the door.

"So where exactly are we gonna go shopping?" I asked.

"I'll tell you as soon as I get Haha's permission." She said, pulling out her phone and dialling her mother. Her mother picked up and she switched it to loud-speaker.

"Hello." She said

"Hia!" we both yelled.

"Is that you Topaz? I'm so sorry about your pe-"

"Mum, Topaz and I wanna go shopping and I figured that I'd take her sight-seeing in Tokyo but we need you to supervise." Toby said, cutting her mother off

"Okay then, when are you two planning to go?"

"Tomorrow or the next day. Alsoshe'sstayingoverforafewdaysloveyoubye!" she said hanging up before her mother could reply or say no. "Well that's that done. Now come on we gotta get to the bus stop before it leaves" She said running out of the front gate and down the hill.

She sure runs a lot for an asthmatic. I thought as I sprinted after her.

Notes:

Give Up On Life Pants is a reference to Adventure Time as is Butts are for pooping

Arigato Gozaimasu is a polite way of saying thank you. Also a warning I will probably use the Japanese for words like thank you, sorry, hello, etc. more and more as the story progresses. Rest assured that I will include the translation at the bottom of the chapter, especially if it's a new word.

Baka means Idiot, stupid or fool.

Haha means Mother or Mum (Okay this is where it gets confusing but I'll do my best to explain the best I can. I'm still learning so I'm not an expert) It's for your own mother in other's company. Okasan is for someone else's mother or to show respect to your own (but both Toby and Topaz are gonna call Ms. Chiko haha anyway) (did that make any scene? Feel free to google it if it didn't)

OK I was going to write over 2000 words but I ran out of time. I was going to write it last night but I had just finished Kuroshitsuji II. It messed me up REALLY BAD. Like I'm talking half an hour of, "no this can't be happening," "this is so wrong" and "That's not how it happened." You see my dear readers I read the manga first and after long mouths of waiting for new chapters and a few false starts I ill-advisedly began the anime.

So I ask you is anyone else in a similar situation? Did you do it the other way round? Or do have any way to help with said brake down?

Anyway I hope you like the chapter. It's up a bit quicker than the last ones, let's hope that continues and I don't get writers block or massive amounts of assignments.

Bye all hope to see you again soon!
