Next day, when Rain woke up, she quickly got dressed and took her white wolf toy along with the rose with they mysterious note attached to it, and went to find her uncle. He wasn't in his office or kitchen, so she let herself wonder around. She found a library, some spare bedrooms and toilets, but no uncle. Her wonders led her outside. She walked around the campus, where she was stopped by two boys wearing the same uniform as Yami.
„Hello there. What are you doing here? Are you a new student? I haven't seen you before." One of the boys bombarded her with questions.
„Are you a child? Why are you still holding onto your childhood toy? Are you five?" The other continued, taking the wolf out of her hands with force. Rain cried out and tried to reach the toy, but the boy held it above his head, so that the short girl couldn't reach it. Rain desperately tried to get her toy from the boy, rose forgotten on the ground.
„Is that how you treat girls?" Suddenly someone asked coldly after minutes of Rain's desperate attempts to get her toy back. The trio looked in the voices direction to see the Moon dorm's president gracefully advancing in their direction.
„Wha-? This is bad." The boy holding the toy wolf said quietly, with a tingle of fear in his voice, since Kaname looked intimidating at that moment, however, he did not return the toy to Rain. Kaname simply took the plush toy from him and gave it to the owner.
„Here you go." Kaname said, as he gave to to away and then turned his attetion back to the two boys. „The chairman will be informed of this. Now, go to your classes."
The two boys quickly scurried away, leaving the girl alone with the intimidating Night class's representative.
„Thank you." Rain said, looking down, trying to hide her shed tears from the male, but he would have none of it. He took the girl's chin and raised her head up to see her eyes. With his thumb he brushed an escaped tear away.
„Don't cry. They are not worth your tears." Kaname said, caring the girl's cheek, trying to cheer the girl up. He noticed the rose on the ground and picked it up, quickly giving it to the girl saying: „I believe it is your's."
Rain nodded her head while taking the rose, not noticing the Moon dorm's president's hurry to hand the flower to her. Even though he was adamant about not letting the girl know about him being non-human, he still had to maintain his gentleman's posture.
„Do you know where uncle is?" She asked, looking back up to look into his sad eyes.
„He left for some business in town. He hoped to be back before you wake up. It seems that something held him back. Don't worry about it, he will come back." The brunet answered the girl.
„I'll escort you back." He offered and Rain nodded her head in agreement.
„Why are you outside Moon dormitories? Uncle said that the Night class are not to leave their dorm until dusk." She inquired.
„I'm an exception. In addition, I had to speak with the chairman, as well." Kaname answered. When they reached the chairman's office, Kaname knocked the door and opened them to see that the owner was not in the room.
„Seems like he's still out." Rain stated her thought out-load.
„Seems like it. I'll come back later. I hope you have a nice day." The pure-blood said and turned to leave. Rain wanted to say that he didn't need to got, but decided otherwise, just in case she accidentally asked the wrong question again and hurt him again. There for she only nodded her head. Once the boy turned around the corner, she went to her room to continue reading the first history book, from where she had left it yesterday.
Once she was finished with the book, she looked outside to see that it was already dusk, but it didn't surprise her since it was still winter and it got dark early. Deciding to take another walk around the campus, this time without the rose or toy, she went outside. There she heard many loud voices, many of them squealing, so she decided to investigate. When she reached the crowd, she tapped one of the many girls shoulder.
"What is this ruckus about?" Rain asked.
"It's the Night class. They are about to go to school." The girl replied quickly and enthusiastically and then returned to her loud squealing. Before Rain could ask any more questions, large wooden gates opened and Rain saw a lot of gorgeous people dressed in uniforms in opposite colors of the Day class uniform. She saw that Kaname was leading them. One glance at them was enough reason for Rain to understand what the ruckus was about, however, she didn't approve of the loudness, which caused her to frown. In the midst of the girls, between them and the Night class, she saw a familiar figure, so she pushed her way to it.
"Do you need any help, Yami-san?" Rain asked, sanding behind the boy.
"No, you aren't a prefect. You need to go back to where you stay in, just like the rest of the Day class." Yami answered, looking back at her, hoping that she won't become a crazed fangirl. As a reply he got a nod of her head after which she left the area, pitying the boy for having to deal with the girls every day. Rain decided to give another attempt to find her uncle indoors. That and she had started to feel the cold too much. Even though the snow had melted in the daylights sun, it was still January. This time she was lucky and found him in his office.
"You wanted something, Rain?" Kaien asked with his permanent smile on his lips.
"Did you leave the rose on my bed, yesterday?" She asked, which caused her uncle to frown.
"No. Why do you ask?" He asked in his serious voice.
"Yesterday evening I found a rose with a note on my bed, along with the toy wolf which I had left somewhere." She explained.
"Can you show me it?" The chairman asked, standing up from his chair. Both of them went to Rain's room only to find another rose innocently lying on her bed. Rain picked it up and opened the note to see three words in the same neat calligraphy: "I'll protect you".
A cold chill seeped through her back and she moved back, closer to her uncle. Noting the gesture, Kaien put a protective hand around her waist.
"The handwriting seems familiar to me…" She quietly muttered, eyes not leaving the words, which caused Kaien to frown again.
"Can you remember to whom it belongs to?" He asked, but she shook her head slowly.
"Let's show it to Kaname. Maybe he can tell. He has seen a lot more handwritings than me. He can help us to unwind this mystery." The chairman offered and his niece nodded her head, like always. She had already decided to accept things as they come, however, it didn't make her stop wondering about many things. For instance, the thoughts about her uncle's and Kaname's eyes seemed to plague her waking hours. And now about who sent the notes.
"Kuran-san wanted to speak with you, earlier today." Rain remembered the previous encounter with the handsome male of the Night class.
"Really? What did he want?" Kaien asked, no longer frowning.
"I don't know, didn't ask." Rain replied and then they went to Kaien's office, only to see Kaname about to knock on the door.
"Ah, Kaname, I was about to call you." The chairman said loudly enough for Kaname to hear him, causing the vampire to turn and look in their direction.
"What did you want from me?" He asked, looking at the light-haired man.
"It seems like Rain-chan has gotten a stalker. Last night and tonight someone has entered her room and left roses with notes on her bed. Maybe you can tell who's handwriting it is?" Kaien said, giving the two notes to Kaname. It took only a glance at the notes for Kaname to freeze in his spot, eyes widening for a fraction of a second, but then he composed himself.
"Do you know the owner?" Kaien asked, noting the reaction with his keen eyes.
"There is only one person whom I know that wrote in a very similar handwriting. However, no one has seen him for many years, me included." Kaname replied in a voice which Rain found eerie, which caused her to tense up.
"Don't worry, miss Cross, I'll find the person behind the notes." Kaname reassured the girl. Rain nodded her head, however, she did relaxed not one bit. Then she noted how Kaname had called her and decided that she didn't like it, being called so formally, that is, so she said: "Please, call me Rain."
"In that case, call me Kaname." He replied with a smile. To avoid getting the two closer than they were already, the chairman piped in: "Rain-chan, why don't you go back to your room and go to sleep? Me and Kaname-kun will take care of the matter."
The girl nodded her head and turned around and went back to her room. Once she was out of sight, Kaien went in the office, Kaname following him.
"Who wrote the note?" Kaien asked, once the door was closed and he sat in his chair. His eyes were serious, as well as his voice, no trace of his goofy personality.
"One of the ancients." Was all Kaname replied, not wanting to give out much information on the matter, but Kaien saw it, so he pressed forward.
"What's his name?"
"No one really knows. The name he is known most of is Arminius. However, he impossible to find unless he chooses to be found." Kaname revealed a bit more information about the person, but still holding back.
"Then there is no way to find him on our own?" Kaien asked and Kaname nodded his head.
"Not unless he chooses to be found." Kaname repeated his words to empathize the fact. He didn't need Kaien stir up some trouble by trying to protect his adopted niece. Kaname knew that he would not be able to stop the ancient from killing the chairman if angered.
"However, he doesn't seem to want to hurt Rain, this notes point out that he wants to protect her." Kaname said, remembering the words written in the notes.
"I hope you are right." Kaien replied, a heavy sigh leaving his lips.
A/N: I wanted all of my chapter to be 2k+ words long, however, this seemed like a good point where to stop. If you are wondering who is Arminius, I suggest you go and read Jeane Kalogridis's vampire trilogy. Those books are very good, I had enjoyed every moment of reading them. As always: Please leave a comment. It makes me happy to read them and make me want to write even more. ^^
