Now... Onto chapter 4!

Chapter 4

*Maka's POV*

I unlocked the door with shaking hands. I tried my very best to open the door with silence so that my father wouldn't hear. To no avail, the door creaked loudly and I was greeted with the stench of alcohol. I covered my nose to block the horrible smell, but it was no use. I could feel a headache coming on.

"MAKA!" My father's voice boomed throughout the entire house.

I closed my eyes hoping I had imagined it, but anyone could have guessed I hadn't. Within seconds my father had stumbled around the corner holding a bottle of half drunken beer in his hand. It was obvious he was wasted. "Where were you?" He asked sternly with a glare in his eyes. He was leaning against a wall for support while waiting for my answer. "I-I had to stay at the library after school for a project." I said stumbling around my brain for an answer. "Hmph." He said crossing his arms. "Try again." He said more threateningly. Shit... He already saw through it. I said in my head and when I spoke aloud my voice was weak and shaking, "No... I was really at the library."

The smell of alcohol was stronger than usual and I began to feel light headed. It took me a second to realize my father was approaching me angrily. Every step he took towards me I took back until I was backed against a wall. "How dare you lie to me" he said through a clenched jaw. I considered myself lucky he was drunk because he slammed the bottle down into the wall. I was almost certain he would have hit me directly if his aim hadn't been distorted because of how wasted he was. However some of the shards landed on my shoulder and as I reached my hand to brush them off I saw him raise a hand at me. His large hand came crashing down over my head and I realized my vision was slowly going black. Before I knew it I felt my body fall onto the shattered bottle and get multiple cuts throughout my already injured body. The last thing I remembered was my father's words, "Pathetic brat." And a large foot coming down over my head. I shut my eyes tight and everything went black.

I woke up with a searing headache. I sat up and put my hand on my head wincing at the touch. I remembered how I had injuries from school the the day before... And my new ones. I stood up slowly, feeling a sharp pain in my legs. Looking down I saw shards of glass piercing my legs. I guess i never left this spot after last night's... Incident. I pulled the shards out quickly, clenching my teeth to hold back a yelp. "Should've know papa wouldn't have the decency to take me up to my room last night." I mumbled to myself. Looking out the window I saw the sun was up and realized it was a school day. "Dammit!" I yelled as I ran up to my room, ignoring the pain shooting through my whole body. Luckily my father left for work early in the morning every day so he was rarely home when I got up for school. I got ready quickly, deciding to wear jeans and a long sleeved yellow shirt to hide my cuts since I didn't have time to cover them with makeup. I finished getting ready and ran down the stairs to see I finished with ten minutes to get to school, but it wold take fifteen minutes to walk. "Guess I'll have to run." I said as I left the house in hurry. I didn't have time to eat breakfast and I felt unusually tired today but I ignored it and managed to make it to school with two minutes to spare.

I walked into the classroom and Kid approached me. "You don't look so well... Are you ok Maka? Soul didn't hurt you did he?" He asked me with what seemed like actual care in his voice. I shook my head with a small smile, "No... Soul was very kind to me. I just wasn't feeling to good this morning." I didn't think I needed to tell him everything that happened between Soul and I, and Kid gave a look that said he wasn't convinced but he nodded his head and walked off.

When Professor Stein came in and gestured class to begin everyone went to their seats and calmed down. I couldn't help but notice Soul hadn't showed up. However, as if on que the door burst opened and in walked Soul and Black Star. They both had those lopsided grins on their faces and stein let out a grunt of annoyance. "Take your seat you two" he said sternly. The two of them moseyed to their seats and I couldn't help but feel a little sad Soul didn't look over to see if I was ok. Stein had been teaching but no matter how hard I tried I couldn't focus. My vision had become blurry and I felt as if my body was as heavy as steel. I felt myself drop to the ground and everything went dark.

*Kid's POV*

Soul and Black Star where late. As usual. They took a seat down next to me and the day went on like every other day. As stein was teaching I leaned over and asked soul, "So... Was Maka ok?" He kept the bored, uncaring look on his face as he answered, "Yeah. She's at school after all right?" I looked down, "I suppose s-" I was interrupted by the sound of someone falling.

Soul noticed it first and let out a small gasp. I quickly looked over to see what had happened and saw that Maka had fainted. I jumped out if my seat and ran over to her, picking her up. "Professor Stein, I'm going to take her to the nurse!" Stein just nodded as if it where completely normal and I rushed out of the room. When we reached the nurses office the nurse seemed surprised to see an unconscious girl and told me to lay her on the bed. She took her temperature and looked over at me confused, "Why is she at school?"

I was just as confused as she was. "What do you mean. Soul said she was fine!" She let out a small sigh. She could tell I didn't know what was going on, looking at me directly in the eyes she answered, "She has a high fever, probably simulated by stress and the injuries she has on her body... If she doesn't get proper treatment then she could go into a comatose state." My eyes widened with shock, "What?! I-I'll go get me dad! He'll know what to do." This most certainly wasn't part of the plan I had going, but I was worried about her.

*Soul's POV*

I don't get it... Why did she faint..? I was relieved that Kid took her to the nurse but I wanted to check on her myself. As much as I hated nerds like her I wanted to know why she collapsed like that. She was perfectly fine yesterday. I waited a few minutes so no one would get suspicious - I didn't want anyone to know I was going to check on her - and I began walking out if the room, "Going to the bathroom Stein. Be back in a few." Stein nodded his head and answered, "But it's Professor Stein to you."

I walked down the hallway in a hurry but when I reached the clinic I walked in with my "cool" facade on and asked the nurse, "Is Maka ok?" She dropped her head, "I'm afraid not..." "Hmph... I'll see for myself." I crossed my arms and made it look like it wasn't a big deal. I found the bed she was on and she looked as if she was asleep. I let out a small smile and put my hand to her head. Her head was burning hot. I looked out the window and sighed, "What am I going to do with you..."

I heard the clinic door open and Kid rushed over to the bed with his dad. I backed away and let the principal take a look. He let out a confused grunt, "We don't have to proper medications to treat her here... You'll have to call her dad and take her to a hospital."

The principal went to talk to the nurse and arrange the phone call while Kid stayed by the bed. I walked over to him and spoke softly, "I'm sure she'll be fine." Kid let out a sigh as to say "I hope so." It was quiet for a few moments before we saw Maka shift in her bed. "S-Soul...?" I looked surprised, Why did Maka ask for me? Why not Kid? I looked down and saw her eyes were half open. "Yeah. And Kid." I spoke as if I didn't care but I'm sure my eyes were saying that I was worried and confused. I looked over to Kid who was just as confused. She spoke softly, "P-Please don't call my dad."

I wanted to ask why but as quickly as she woke up she has passed out again. I walked over to Kid's dad and took the phone out of his hand. "Don't call her dad."

I don't know why I reacted the way I did, but for whatever reason I felt her dad should be left out of it. Kid walked up to me shaking my shoulders, "What are you doing? Maka's dad needs to know!" I shoved him off a little harder than I would have liked but I spoke in a calm but threatening voice, "She said not to call him. So we're not calling him." Kid nodded his head and spoke softly, "Then we'll have to be the one's to take her to the hospital. I let out an annoyed sigh, "Right."

I wasn't going to fall for a nerd. And I didn't want to drop the "cool" act around anyone. But I felt as if right now, I had to take care of her. It was the only thing on my mind.

Again, sorry about this chapter being so short!
