Chapter 4

Football Practises

The school bell rang once again as I stepped into my classroom with a sigh. It was English today and I was hoping with all the power in the world that I do not end up in the same class as Barbie's boyfriend. I placed my book at the back corner of a desk and sat down on the chair carelessly. No one else decided to pay attention to me—much to my liking. I looked around the classroom as the students went on chattering. I suddenly felt lonely. Of course, it was only a few posthumous moment when Lancelot decided to interrupt my thoughts as he sat in front of me. He quickly turned around and gave me a grin in which had resulted my ignorance.

"Come on, Merlin," Lancelot tried to catch my attention. "If it makes it any better, I'm not like Arthur."

"It doesn't."

Lancelot decided to just keep quiet after much to my delight. The teacher then just walked into the room like usual and the class began. I did notice how Arthur was not in my class this time. It was at least the only time in the day I got to be free without getting glares or insults from that blonde prat. The school bell once again rang as I got up from my seat and took all my books before walking out of the class. I was about to walk to my left when someone called up to me. I turned around and immediately my mood lightened up when I saw it was Freya, jogging up to me with a smile on her face.

"Hey, Merlin," she said as she stood in front of me.

"Hi, Freya."

"What class do you have now?" she asked.

"Uhm, Physics."

"Great! I have Physics too!" she was somehow excited today as I smiled at her. Finally, the day doesn't seem as bad as I thought it would be. A class with Freya.

"Should we go?" I asked her before she nodded. We both started to walk side by side as we passed down the hall to get to the Physics lab. I learned a lot of things about Freya as we talked. She was talkative, that was one of her obvious points. She was also very friendly. She just keeps the conversation going on smooth without any hitch. I guess that made me feel much occupied but I wasn't complaining. It had been a long time since I had spoken to anyone (excluding Morgana) like that before. Entering the Physics lab, Freya and I had decided to be lab partners and we choose the lab table in the middle of the class.

"So, where did you come from?" Freya suddenly asked as she sat on her chair as did I. I placed my books on the desk before I looked at her.

"From Ealdor," I simply replied. She could only nod.

"I see…" that was all she had said. I just shrugged it off as the class began. It was like this every day—classes will forever be classes.

"Merlin!" I was just walking down the school hall during recess after saying goodbye to Freya when once again I was called by Lancelot. I groaned mentally as I decided to ignore and keep on walking. However, that didn't affect this teenager as he quickly caught up and tried to stop me from walking. "Why can't you just listen?"

"Because I don't want to," I said annoyed.

"But I have important news!" Lancelot said as he finally stopped walking and grabbed my right wrist making me to stop walking as well. It was a surprise when he held onto my wrist tightly. I tried to tug it off but seemingly with how built he looked and how small I was; it was futile. "It's about the football practise."

Then, I stopped struggling. Well, why couldn't he just say it any sooner? I thought the football practise starts next week? I looked at Lancelot as he raised one of his eyebrows indicating if I would not run away. I finally sighed and nodded before he let go of my wrist. I just stood there keeping my word.

"Right, so the football practise had been re-scheduled earlier to today," Lancelot said. "Arthur's orders."

Of course. Of course it was Arthur's orders. Doesn't he know that some people (like me) had to help my mum do the house chores today?

"After school until six," Lancelot said. I looked at him for a while before I furrowed my eyebrows. Why does the football practise have to take that long? Was it necessary for the first football practise to be that long?

"Why that long?" I asked curiously but Lancelot only shrugged.

"Arthur's orders," Lancelot replied. With that he walked away. I watched him walk away as I sighed. I wonder why we have to practise that long anyway. We could take it up slowly per practise. But of course, I doubt Arthur was a man with patience. Who knows, maybe he had made a plan to torture me to death—now that he knows I was Morgana's best friend.

I sighed once again under my breath as I walked away from there. I wanted to go to the canteen but then I wasn't in any mood to see anyone. Though, Morgana would skin me alive if I didn't inform her where I was. I fished my phone out from my pockets and texted her stating where I was. Seemingly, right now I just wanted to sit under the shady tree at the backyard of the school. It was as hot as summer so I suppose that would do. With the text sent, I walked towards the backyard of the school and scanned the green scenery until a large oak tree where no had occupied yet stood large and proud. Bingo.

"So, the football practise is today?" Gwen asked as I nodded at her. Morgana, Gwen and I sat under this oak tree that I found earlier. It was great and the grass patch under this tree was cooling. The sun was shining and glaring at everyone else but us. Morgana looked at me as she furrowed her eyebrows.

"That's strange," she said. "Arthur said the football practise would start next week."

"Well, whatever reasons, he better have a good one," I said. Morgana simply smiled small meanwhile Gwen nodded in agreement. Then all of a sudden, her eyes grew wide and she suddenly shook my shoulders. I was taken aback at her aggression for a moment as she let her question to hurl out of her mouth. Morgana, simply not stopping Gwen from almost killing me with her shake looked at us.

"Wait! Who was the girl who talked to you this morning?" Gwen said still shaking me. I slowly removed her hands from me as I let my mind to stop spinning. She didn't even bother to apologize since she had that curiosity mask worn over her. Morgana simply raised her eyebrows in question as I sighed.

"A girl? Merlin hadn't said to me anything about a girl," Morgana simply said as she let out a small sly smile. Of course, I could give out an awkward grin at those two before I nodded.

"Her name is Freya," I said. Morgana immediately peeked in curiosity as she sat up straighter than usual and had her 'tell-me-now' look on her face. Gwen was excited as usual as she couldn't hold herself from smiling wide. I hope it doesn't split her face though. That was how wide she was smiling. "Well, she's nice. We have Physics class together."

"Do you like her?" Morgana had to bombard me with questions as I could only look at her with my straight face.

"No—" I said but all I got was the sceptical looks from both girls. With a sigh I finally admitted, "I don't know, maybe?"

"This is gold, Merlin!" Morgana exclaimed as Gwen could only agree with a nod. "You have to let us help you!"

"Help me?" I asked confused but both girls only looked at each other before they looked at me.

"Yeah, help you to get her," Gwen said. I was taken aback with their sudden suggestion as I could only let out a small awkward laugh.

"No, thanks," I denied. "I don't need help. I don't want to be in a relationship now."

"And why not?" Gwen asked as she crossed her hands against her chest. It seemed Morgana had some influence on her. Hopefully she wouldn't turn into Morgana number two. The horror I had to endure with two Morganas!

"Well, I'm just not ready yet," I said as I half shrugged. "Maybe later."

Morgana and Gwen didn't force the idea into me after that. They just decided to let it go; which likely I guess was a good thing since indeed, I wasn't in any shape to be in a relationship. One; I was new here and I needed time to fit in and two, I could always date later.

With that made up, we changed the topic and talked about something else until the school bell rang.

School has ended as I just had texted mum about the football practise. Of course, my mum was too excited for her own good and even volunteered to come and watch the practise. That could possibly be a huge no as I finally convinced her not to come and that she could come during the football match or something. Which she agreed—reluctantly.

I went to my locker first to keep all my books so that I could pick the books up later after practise. I twirled the combination and placed the books inside before slamming it closed. I turned around and finally saw Morgana jogging up towards me as her wavy raven hair bounced every time she took a step. I smiled at her small before she panted and stood in front of me.

"Let's go," she said. "I'll show you the way to the football field."

I guess she wasn't kidding when she said she had wanted to come to the football practises. Not because of her brother; but because she was afraid what her brother could do to me. The worst day for a guy was when a girl had to come and protect you. This wasn't so bad if we didn't have huge egos. Only Arthur's—his ego was bigger than all of men combined.

Walking down the school hall, I looked around and noticed how the school looked like when most of the students went home. It was quiet, possibly dark and somehow lonely. It seemed like a scary scene from a high school ghost movie. Morgana simply didn't seemed affected by the change of atmosphere as she led me to the football field. Once reached there, she opened the door and walked out of the school, where the field was, in the middle.

You see, once you walked out of the building, you could see those stairs climbing down to the field. It was actually like a stadium. A big one at that, so that was why the field was at the middle, and the seats around the stadium was placed; as they had rows exactly like a real stadium. How rich could this school be?

There I saw the group of jocks that were already talking and punching each other playfully. Morgana walked down and down until she stopped at the second row from below. She sat at the first chair before she looked at me and gestured me to walk to the field, where Arthur was already talking and laughing with his bunch of friends. Of course, there were girls too—strangely. Cheerleaders, I suppose. I sighed to myself as I walked slowly to the field and walked towards Arthur's group. I didn't know what to do as I stood behind of him. I took a glance at Morgana who sat at the row giving me gestures to pat on his shoulder. I did, listening to her. At first he nudged it off and after a sudden couple of pokes on his shoulder, he turned around annoyed.

"What?" he turned around and looked at me. For a while, his tense features were visible before he stared into my eyes and all of his shoulders and facial expressions relaxed. "Oh…it's you."

I scowled at his answer before I sighed, "If you don't want me to be here, I could gladly go home."

"Someone's snappy today," he simply gave out that snarky comment as I looked away from him before I burn his face with my glares. I looked at Morgana again as she simply smiled small at me and shrugged her shoulders. "So, Morgana brought you here today."

I sensed that little voice of his as I looked at Arthur who suddenly seemed serious. His eyes were fixed on Morgana before he met mine. He suddenly started to lean in as my breath got caught at my throat. What the hell was he doing?

"I don't know what your intentions with her is, Merlin, but I suggest you not to break her heart like all of those douche bags did before," he suddenly said under his breath. "Or else…"

He retreated a few steps away before he walked away from me. I just stood there and stared at what had happened. Did he just—threatened me? Sudden realization dawned me when I had realised that maybe Arthur thought I was romantically involved with Morgana! Oh my Lord! I mentally slapped myself. Arthur was an idiot after all.

I was about to walk back up to the rows when I felt a pat on my shoulder. I turned around and met with a girl—who had almost dirty blonde hair and looked at me with a smug smile. She had her cheerleading uniform on since the uniform had the school crest on it. I looked at her confused when a few boys came up to her. They all looked new to me since I didn't see them hanging out with Arthur. The one on the left was tall but he had that evil look in his eyes meanwhile the other looked shorter but he had a sly smile on his face.

"You must be Morgana's new play doll," she said rudely. I could only raise both of my eyebrows.

"Don't play dumb with that look, boy," the taller one said as he smirked. "We know you and Morgana are a thing."

"Right and you must be Arthur's boyfriend," I gave out a snarky comment as I stared at them emotionlessly. The taller man seemed to be disgusted with that idea as he took a step forward.

"Don't play smart with me, boy," he warned.

"Stop, Cenred," the girl with that dirty blonde hair spoke as she held her palm to his chest and tried to stop him from advancing towards me.

"Pretty big mouth for a boy with abnormal looking ears," the shorter one said.

"Well, thank you all for your time, but as you can see—I'm leaving," I said as I decided to turn my back and walk away; not wanting to waste my time. I didn't even know why they came and talked to me if they were going to stand there and insult me. It was ridiculous. Why was I attracting rude people all of a sudden? Suddenly, I felt someone tugging my shoulder to face them before a punch landed on my right cheek. With that, I flew to the ground. Pain suddenly gushed to my right cheek and all over my face. I groaned as I tried to touch my face. I think I felt something bleeding.

"Merlin!" I heard Morgana screamed as she rushed to my side. She quickly looked at me as she tried to make sure I was okay. I tried to stop her as I sat on the grass. "What the hell is wrong with you, Morgouse?" Morgana stood up and yelled at that blonde. The blonde could only roll her eyes and looked away.

"It's your boyfriend's fault for his big mouth," she said. Morgana was about to yell at her again when I heard Arthur and his other friends running to our side. I guess they either saw that or heard Morgana's screaming. When Morgana screams; she really screams.

"What are you doing, Cenred, molesting my teammates?" Arthur growled as all three of them only glared back at us. Cenred only smirked at Arthur as he walked towards him.

"I didn't know you had teammates like that big ears there," he once again said sarcastically. Arthur only glared. I noticed how he clenched his jaw and how he tightened his fist; ready to punch him in the face. Big ears? Seriously? If they wanted to throw insults about me, they could have done it with a better one. That 'big ears' thing was already heard of.

"Leave, Cenred. You're dismissed for the training today and don't bother to come back until you learned some manners," Arthur suddenly said as he took a step forward until both boys glared each other straight ahead. Cenred's smirk dropped as he took a step back.

"I can't believe you're defending that newbie over your own teammate," Cenred snapped but Arthur only kept his cool.

"You're no longer my teammate until you find a way to correct your behaviour," Arthur said coolly. Cenred could only grit his teeth before he took another step back and turned around. He walked away leaving his two minions to glare at them and me one last time before following him. I didn't even realise I was in pain until Morgana touched my cheek. I groaned again this time catching Arthur's attention. He quickly walked towards me and squatted down to my level to see if I was alright. "Are you alright?"

"No," I looked away from Arthur as I sighed. That could have been the dumbest question I had ever heard!

"Come on, Merlin," Morgana said. "I'll help you get to the nurse's office."

"No, it's alright," I tried to deny.

"Are you serious, Merlin?" Arthur suddenly asked as his voice rose in ager. "You have a huge blue-black bruise on your cheek and you wouldn't go to the nurse's office?"

"You don't have to pretend, Arthur," I spattered out as I stood up. I was wobbly at first but then I soon steadied myself. "I can take care of myself just fine."

Arthur also stood up but he was glaring at me. "You seem to be more than just an idiot if that's any possible, big ears."

"Arthur!" Morgana yelled at him. I could only glare at him back before I tightened my jaw.

"At least I'm not a royal pain in the arse, am I?" I said out loud. I guess that triggered his sensor warning because the next thing I knew, he charged at me and pushed me down to the grass again. We were wrestling and with Morgana shouting asking us to stop and the other teammates trying to stop us, at the end, he ended up on top of me, pinning both of my hands at either side of me; successfully blocking my way out. No one else dared to interfere. Even his friends didn't do anything and I guess it was because they couldn't.

"I helped you and this is how you thank me?" he growled.

"No one asked you to help me," I bit back.

"You are annoying, do you know that?" he was beginning to tighten his grip around my wrists and it was starting to become painful. Why was he getting angry over me anyway? He acted like an obnoxious prat this whole time and suddenly he cared? Did someone put him up for this?

"And you're an arse! Arthur, let go of me!" I yelled as I tried to get up but he had successfully pinned me down again. He suddenly smirked at me and just like that; we both ended up quiet, toppled on top each other and just staring at each other's faces. The grip on my wrists loosened a bit but he was still not letting me go.

"You're so weak," he said. "Don't you ever eat?"

"None of your business," I said but there wasn't any harm. Instead, that was all to it. He didn't mean any harm when he said that. It was as if he asked. Properly. We just stayed like that and for a moment, I realised the position we were in. Arthur was on top of me—straddling me, actually and I think I was blushing like a fair maiden! "Arthur, if you don't mind, could you get off of me?"

With a sigh after a while, he finally let go of me and stood up. I laid on the ground for a while before I saw him extending a hand to me. He looked away from me. I only stared at the hand before he shook his hand a bit asking me to take it before he retreats it away. I only sighed before I grabbed his hand and he hoisted me up to my feet.

"Thanks," I muttered under my breath and he only nodded before he cleared his throat.

"Now, you should go and see the nurse or something," he suddenly said. "I don't want you on my team looking like a punch bag."

There was it again. I groaned a bit under my breath as I dusted myself.

"My choice," I said.

"If you don't do it," Arthur suddenly looked at me. At first I thought he was trying to do one of his bossy attitudes again but I was quite taken aback when I saw how serious his face was. "If you don't do it—you will be suspended from the team."

"Arthur! Isn't that a bit too harsh?" one of the taller men spoke as he walked up to us.

"Then he should go and seek aid for that, right?" he smirked before he walked away leaving me staggered there. Was he really—never mind. I sighed expiated to myself. Just to think that that prat would have changed. I suddenly felt a tug on my sleeve when I looked and saw Morgana looking at me worriedly.

"It's alright, Percival," Morgana slowly looked at that tall man. "It's just Arthur's way showing care."

I fake coughed at that. Percival however seemed convinced before he nodded and walked away to his team. Morgana on the other hand just smiled small before she finally dragged me to the nurse's office. On the way there, she just kept on glancing over to me.

"You know, Arthur was just looking out for you since you're his teammate now," she said. I looked at her slowly.

"He hates me for being on his team in the first place!" I said.

"Yeah, but he can't deny you're his teammate," she said. "Even if he is the world biggest prat."

I chuckled but winced at the pain from my throbbing cheek. Well, I guess that was right. Yeah, I shouldn't have been so harsh on that poor lad. I sighed as we then silently walked to the nurse's office. I hope mum wouldn't ground me for this. I have had enough bad day already.
