Nothink Like Us. Chapter 4.

After her encounter with Lisa, May looked herself in her dorm and stayed there trying to keep the memories in line and out of her mind but she was failing resoundingly. Despite her effort she was recalling that night in DC before Bahrain and feeling miserable about that when she heard a soft knock on her door.

"Who is it?" she asked reluctantly. She didn't feel like dealing with nobody else that night.

"It's me" Coulson's voice said from the other side of the door. Melinda rolled her eyes because "it's me" wasn't really an answer and opened the door, moving to a side to letting him in.

"What?" she asked directly because really, she wasn't in the mood to talk to anyone.

"I've looking for information about Agent Hastings" he said without any introduction and Melinda looked at him blankly waiting for him to continue even when she could sense where the conversation was heading "She's level 7 and had been part of lots of successful missions, then I don't know why I've never heard of her before. She had a perfect and clean profile, except for a little thing that called my attention"

Coulson made a pause to study May's reaction but she didn't react even when she knew quite well what that 'little thing' was. She had seen it herself the only time she had searched for Lisa's profile in Shield's data bases.

"It says" Coulson continued since May wasn't talking "and I quote, 'Highly recommended no interaction with Agent Melinda May, Identification Number A 078634'. Do you care to explain?"

May sighed and sat on her bed. Suddenly she was feeling extremely tired and didn't find it in herself to maintain the mask of annoyance anymore.

"Do you remember Bahrain?" she began and Coulson nodded "Well, she was one of the agents being held there. When I'd liberated all of the hostages she was still missing and I had no clue about her whereabouts, the place was so giant" May could feel Coulson's preoccupied gaze even when she wasn't looking at him "There was a bomb somewhere in the facility and I didn't have time to look for it, much less to disconnect it. My orders were to save some information in a disk, collect a bunch of items and leave the building before everything explode. That were Fury's direct orders" she said like she was telling somebody else's story.

"No rescue?" Coulson asked even when he already guessed the answer to that question. Melinda shook her head slowly just one time before raising her eyes.

"There wasn't enough time for me to do those things and look for Lisa too. But we had so much history together, I couldn't manage to leave her…" May confessed with a sigh and Coulson noticed that May had said "Lisa" instead of "Hastings". She never talked about people using their names but their last names; even he was usually just "Coulson" for her. But he didn't ask questions "So I disobeyed Fury's direct orders and went looking for her. I finally found her and we were able to leave the facility before the explosion".

"And you didn't get the information nor the items?" Coulson asked her just to be sure. Melinda shook her head once more, already tired of that sort of interrogation. She hadn't thought about that events for years because it hurt and angered her so much to bring them back again. All she wanted in that moment was for Coulson to leave her alone. But seemed her answers weren't quite enough because the man pushed her a little further.

"How's that you cared so much for her?"

He sounded a little surprised and Melinda looked at him just for a second before averting her gaze.

"Because I loved her" the woman admitted quietly. She had never admitted that before, not even to herself, and it made her feel incredibly vulnerable. That was what Fury had thought too, that was why he had split the two women and recommended to keep them separated. It had been the right call, she knew it, because she had proved that no one couldn't count on May when Lisa Hastings was involved in a situation.

But she also looked away because she knew what the following question was going to be.

"You still do?" Coulson inquired softly and Melinda said the only thing she could say.

"I don't know"

Coulson took a minute to think looking at the asian woman absently. Melinda sighed and run a hand through her hair, frustrated with all that situation. She had worked so hard to regain Fury's trust. She was a soldier, a machine, she had always been but back then she had had a weakness and now she worked everyday to not let her emotions mess with her. Geez, she even had been acting behind Coulson's back because that had been her orders and Coulson was her closest friend. She felt like she was stepping back against her will. But she would understand if Coulson decided he couldn't trust her because reality was she didn't know if she could trust herself either.

Finally Coulson fixed his eyes on her with a concerned gaze.

"Do you think you will be able to work around her?" he asked and when his voice shiver almost imperceptible May knew their entire personal and professional relationship would depend on her answer. She hoped she had the right one.

"I don't know Phil" Melinda said sincerely because it was the truth "I hope I will"

"Ok" Coulson said and he sounded like he had heard what he was hoping and needing to "I'm going to keep you two separated" May nodded "and let's hope nothing happen that put you in that situation again"

He was about to leave when May talked again.

"Thanks" she whispered. She knew Coulson understood how important his gesture was for her because she never whispered "I've changed. I'll do my best not to fail on you" she said more firmly.

A tiny comprehensive smile appeared in Coulson's lips.

"I know. Now rest a while. It's been a long day".

Melinda nodded and watched him leaving her room before gathering enough strength to put her PJ on and go to sleep.
