Chapter IV
Two Masters in a Compound

"So...um. Mitsu...kuni? You think we should just...uh sit in here?" A nervous seven year old girl asked. Her parents hadn't made it, but she had found her way into the military installation by her Uncle.

Hani sighed. He wasn't enjoying his time in the quarantine zone, he'd only managed to be in the area by chance when it was set up, but it was dull. It used to be a small shopping centre before the outbreak, but had managed to become a reasonably defended settlement. As far as the blond understood it, the last orders that any sort of official government gave out was to protect the civilians.

Food was strictly rationed, and no one left unless it was permanently or going out with an authorised group for scavenging. Even then, civilians weren't allowed to tag along. And in the eyes of the Military, even though Hani was an expert in Martial Arts, he was just another civilian. And besides, what good is Karate against opponents who would just eat your arm.

Entertainment was severely limited as well, the most everyone had was two and a half decks of cards, a few books to pass around and whatever games you managed to make up in between yourselves. The shopping centre had already been raided clean before the quarantine had been set up.

"There's nothing else to do, Mina-chan." Hani reasoned as they sat down in the middle of a walkway. Not many people were in sight, they walked around the two. Maybe 100 people lived here, maybe less or maybe more. Hani didn't care to remember.

"We could play high and seek?" She suggested, hope lighting up her expression.

"There's only two hiding spots in the settlement. It would be a very quick game." Hani shrugged, he hated being the downer but in times like this it was hard not to succumb to it.

"Hopscotch?"

"We don't have anything to draw with."

"Red light green light?"

"No."

Minako looked down at the ground with thought, her mother had always praised her ability to make fun out of anything. She thought that her life nowadays was the eternal challenge for her.

"Why don't you go play with those other kids? Uh...Yui, Touyo and Umino." Hani asked, he enjoyed the company of Minako but felt bad he couldn't keep her entertained. Nowadays he'd just lay around for his cousin to come back to him so they could sit around in silence again.

"Umino doesn't like me, Yui just wants to play dress up and Touyo is only two." Minako reasoned with a sigh. "All the kids were in school when it happened."

Hani closed his eyes as he tried not to think of it. Ouran had closed for renovations for just a week, it was May and the other schools were still in session. Many children died, and those who survived were left without parents. It was hard not to feel great sorrow whenever he thought of it.

Minako had managed to escape by pure luck. It was the only day that she had decided to fake being ill, she'd rarely done it but wanted to keep away from her friend who she had recently fallen out with. Her parents were working so she was sent to be looked after by her Uncle who was spending time at home resting from being abroad with the Military. Her parents never came home.

Her memory of the initial worry was little hazy due to her sheer panic, but she remembered constantly clinging to her Uncle as she was piggy-backed. He still needed to fulfil his Military duties to help, but didn't dare leave her out of his sight. She remembered seeing so much blood, the noise of endless gunfire wouldn't leave her memory so easily.

Hani wanted his cousin to be with them. But understood why he wasn't. Some of the soldiers had taken in interest in his cousin, saw him as potentially a good soldier. He knew that he'd probably be a good match too, after all when things get serious he can easily take down anyone who'd try to hurt his friends. But this was a fight needed to use weapons.

Mori looked around the room. It was originally a staff room back before the zombies, and it still sort of functioned as a staff room. Mori was surprised to know that the base had managed to get thirty two soldiers alive and well to protect it. A total of thirteen soldiers gave their life to get the total of a ninety civilians safe. Including the soldiers, himself and his cousin, the total population was one hundred and twenty four. A lot of mouths to feed.

But with the Military being important pillars to keeping the settlement safe...well, they were entitled to the best. Or at least that's how it operated here. Takashi couldn't say that it was fair, nor if he wanted to be apart of it. But if he was going to provide the best for Hani and himself, he'd have to go along with it.

"Morinozuka, huh?" A female soldier looked up at the male. "Wait, weren't you a...karate expert?"

"Kendo." Mori supplied.

"Ahh," She nodded. "Not much help against a zombie is it?"

"Not really." he shook his head. He liked to keep quiet, not really contributing to anything, but nowadays he found its near impossible to keep that attitude up. He hadn't progressed to full sentences yet, but if he was to really become apart of the Military, he'd have to.

"Hey, Morinozuka, you ever shot a gun before?" An older soldier asked from his perch on an ammunition case. Usually they'd be worried about it, but apparently before setting this place up they raided the military base before it was overrun.

"No, sir."

"Right, we'll have to teach you. What do you think Saito? Start him off with the pistol or rifle?" The older soldier asked, looking to the traditional looking Japanese woman. She looked to be mid to late twenties, she held herself strong and was ready to reach for her pistol at any moment.

"I would say pistol, sir." Saito replied.

"And why would that be?"

"Every Military Personel carries a pistol, and it is better for short range. But if we are being quite honest sir, we have a large surplus of pistol ammunition more than rifle ammunition."

The older soldier smiled, "Excellent, Saito. Would it be alright if I leave his training to you?"

"I have no other orders sir. But I was about to rest, as my shift finishes in ten minutes. May I start his training tomorrow?"

"Alright then, Saito. But make it first light, when you start him." The old soldier smiled. "Get him in routine then, soldier."

Sweet! I finally came up with a plot line for Hani and Mori which made me pumped to update. If anyone is curious, the duo are on the island of Hachijojima and I apologise in advance if there's not as much correlation to the actual place in terms of stuff. Like I had no idea if they have a military base, nor if they have a shopping centre. If I'm honest, I wanted at least one group to have the trouble of crossing a body of water. ALSO I MAY NEED HELP WITH WHAT HANI SHOULD DO WHILST MORI IS DOING HIS THING. I have ideas for character growth but other than that, in terms of what he does in that time, I have no idea.

Thanks for reading!
