Opening the bedroom door, I looked out into the kitchen and see nobody. There was a note on the table that read:
Guys, we left without you. Have fun being late on your second day.
I hold it up behind my head, to where I know Alistair will notice it. He grabs it and asks, "Ooh, does this mean what I think it means"?
"That we're taking my car, yeah" I look at him and I can't. He's giving me the puppy eyes. He doesn't even have to really try to do it. I pick up the keys off the counter and toss them to him. We walk out the door and toward the car, both doors to the car opened. It's my turn to raise my brows in his direction.
"Sweetheart, one of the many perks." He smiles and sits in the drivers seat. I get into the passenger side and close the door.
"What else can-"I begin to ask but he looks at me and says, "Sweetheart, it's my turn to ask some questions."
"Okay," I respond.
"Where are you from?" He asks. I look at him when he asks me this, couldn't he just read my mind and figure out the easy questions? Relaxing in the seat I respond, "Manhattan, New York". He looks at me acknowledging my answer to his question but also says, "I could read your mind, but what fun would that be?". A few seconds of silence pass before he continues, lowering the radio as if it were preventing him from listening to me go on.
"So, you and Trexis met talking about Pokémon. Which basically makes you a huge Poké-nerd." He laughs, smiling at his wordplay. "Strictly generation one," I responded, "I don't know what they're thinking with some of these new characters they're coming out with. Tell me, who's Massiyo? How did you meet?"
He looks at me and lets out a soft chuckle, "Honestly, he's just a student at college. We met up last year in biology, and he seemed like a good person to associate with. We decided to room together when an apartment complex room opened up and it was cheaper than paying for housing on campus." I looked forward, baffled, "So he doesn't know anything about you being an angel?".
"Nope," He laughed, "he's completely oblivious".
We pull into the school parking lot, him parking and turning off the engine. "Why are you enrolled here? Aren't there more important things for you to be doing?" I asked, knowing this was the question that repeatedly brushed the top of my mind. He looks forward, expression completely blank like he wasn't joking around a few seconds ago. "Things here aren't right" he says blankly.
"What do you mean?" I ask.
"At the school, something bad is going on here," he looks at me with such intensity, as if he doesn't want to scare me.
"Alistair, I watched blood come out of your leg yesterday and shot a demon, I think I'll be able to understand what the problem is." I say looking back at him waiting for his response.
"You need to listen to the whole story," his voice monotone.
"Okay." I say leaning toward him, focused on his every action.
"There have been a lot of tragedies to occur near here in the past year. I have been investigating different events in the area to see if they could be related. Like the fire in your dormitory room. They seem to be targeting specific people." He says.
"So fires... an arsonist? Is that all?" I ask, not meaning to be disrespectful but for an angel to be investigating this it had to be more than just a fire. He heard that.
"It is more. Last semester I caught a demon putting ricin into food stored in the cafeteria. Luckily I caught him in time and nobody had ingested it. Fires, poisonings, car crashes... I don't know how any of this connects..." His voice dimmed and I could tell his mind was trying to work toward finding an answer, wait...
"Car crashes?" I whispered looking at him wanting further explanation, but knowing deep down exactly what he was about to say.
He looked at me and said softly, "You said you would listen, I didn't know it was going to happen." He knew, I mean of course he did, but I've spent the last day not thinking about it for once.
"I swear, if I could've done something I would've." He said with a deep voice, but soft.
I wanted to run, be alone, lay down and sleep. I didn't want to think about this, I was tired of all the thoughts.
"Mira..." he starts to say, but I don't listen. I open the door and start to run, with no destination.
Nobody would know where I am.
Except my parents.
