The Split- Chapter 4

Me: Greetings, everyone! Sorry about the long wait!

Yugi (looming over me): And where have you been?

M(shrinking): I've been busy with personal matters…

Yami(eyes blazing dangerously): 8 months…you kept me waiting…8 MONTHS! (gives chase)

M(running away): I don't own Yu-Gi-Oh! or the characters!

Yugi (watching from sidelines): Please read and review!

Yugi POV

It's been two months since Yami and I were split. I thought to myself, looking out the window at the cherry blossom trees. A part of me had always thought that we would share the same body for…well, for however long he stayed, and I didn't mind sharing, but it was nice having it to myself again. I had almost forgotten how quiet it was in my mind without the Spirit there, but it wasn't unsettling. If anything, it was quite calming. Closing my eyes, I relished the silence...

~~~Flashback Start~~~~
"Why did you do that?" I reprimanded the Spirit after he walked away from where Anzu and Ruby were standing. "Anzu didn't deserve that!"
The Spirit turned and punched the mind wall to his right, surprising me with the look of frustration on his face. His crimson eyes locked with mine, challenging me to question him further. I felt the need to look away, but held fast. "Why are you so hostile toward Anzu?"
His eyes narrowed. "I must keep her at bay."
I narrowed my own. "Why? She's not a threat to you!"
"Because of the way her company puts me on edge!"
"That's ridiculous! You treat her so rudely just because you don't like her company?" I shook my head in disbelief. "That's the worst excuse I've ever heard! And here I thought Pharaoh's were supposed to be kind to all their subjects, royal or not."
"Believe what you want." With a huff, the Spirit turned and disappeared into his mind room.
With a heavy sigh, I turned to walk back to where the girls were waiting. The Spirit was so confusing sometimes...
~~~~Flashback End~~~~

Draping an arm over my eyes, I pushed the flashback away. No matter how many times I questioned him, he never elaborated or provided any other explanations. The way he treated her really concerned me. Anzu and I have been friends since middle school, she was practically my first friend. We had gone through so much together, and I had grown to see her as my sister. The Pharaoh was a different story. When I had completed the puzzle, he and I had bonded. It was almost as if there was no room left for anyone else to bond with him, and I felt guilty. Had I taken the only opportunity for my other friends to connect with the Spirit? Then again, how could I have known that he was sealed inside?

From the second I had accidentally released him, he had taken on the identity of a "darker" side. He would always take over when I couldn't handle a situation, and I wouldn't remember a thing from when he was in control, which had scared me at the time. What he had done while in charge wasn't a mystery; I was able to put pieces together. All the accidents and people who were deemed "unstable due to hallucinations" were results of his punishment games, or yami no game as he preferred to call it.

Anzu had been in trouble many times, and he seemed to be very secretive about the punishments dealt to those responsible. Only recently had I brought those up, and he had slowly opened up, telling me everything that had happened. At first I was horrified at the gruesome punishments, then he would point out that the outcome of each situation would have ended very...unfavorably. I realized quickly that if he wasn't so quick to take over, that a few of my friends, maybe even myself, wouldn't be around today...and that was a very depressing and scary thought.

I turned as my door opened and blinked in surprise as Yami appeared, his cerise eyes wide and his hands slightly shaking, followed by Jounouchi who was carrying a tray loaded with food. Yami slowly came and sat on the bed next to me, his gaze never leaving the floor, as Jounouchi sat on my other side. I looked from one to the other, waiting for someone to speak, but mainly focused on my best friend since freshman year.

"Anzu is in cardiac arrest." My heart literally stopped at Jounouchi's words. "but I'm sure she will be fine." He said with his big grin.

I opened my mouth to try to say something, anything, to lessen the pain that the Spirit was feeling, but I closed it again. I wanted him to figure his feeling out himself, I had decided when I first awoke, recruiting Grandpa and Jounouchi in my cause. Instead, I placed a hand on Yami's shoulder and tried to assure him with a smile.

He didn't look up, but he sighed heavily, stood, and walked to the door. "I'm going out for a while."

"Gramps will be back in bit," Jounouchi said. "I'm sure he will-" but his words died as the door closed with a solid bang. "Jeeze, I was just trying to help the guy."

"I know, Joe, thanks for being a pal." I said, resting back on my pillows with a sigh. "Cardiac arrest…" Anzu, you have to survive this. I prayed as Jounouchi handed me a tuna salad sandwich. You have to give Yami a chance… he needs you to help him...

"He's been acting a little strange." Jounouchi commented, picking up a double cheeseburger.

"He's on edge more than ever," I sighed. "And without our mind link, I can't really tell what's bothering him." Reaching out, I grabbed a handful of fries and dipped them in the blue-cheese ranch that he had on the side in a small dish. The crunching of the fries sounded loud in the small room, blocking any outside noise. My eyes rolled back as I savored their crispiness. I so couldn't wait to get out of this place so I could eat like a normal person again.

Yami POV

Leaning against the door to close it, I found myself clutching my chest. It felt as though someone had taken a dagger and thrusted it through my ribcage to reach my heart. What was this feeling? It was making it hard to breathe…

"Excuse me,"

I looked up to see the nurse that had pushed me from Anzu's room approach.

"I have news on Anzu Mazaki's condition. She's stabilized, for the moment, but it was truly a close call. She blacked out on us for about a minute, we thought that we had lost her, but it was as if something in her fought to stay with us."

Anzu was okay…I breathed a sigh of relief, the pain in my chest subsiding slightly. "Thank you for informing me." I said, nodding, then froze.

The nurse had short red hair and black rectangle shaped glasses. I felt myself grow cold as Ice Master's attack, and then I grew as hot as Curse of Dragon's fire breath. "Ruby…" I growled, my body growing rigid.

M: So what do you think? I know it's not very good, but I had a few minutes of free time and just came up with it on the fly. The next one will be better, I promise.

Yami: I sure hope so.

Yugi: That one explained a lot though.

M: Thanks for all the support! See you soon!
