Chapter 4: After math
"And now we welcome the new year, full of things that have never been."
Rainer Maria Rilke
Rays of sunlight gleam downwards on to the small town. A brightness welcoming the new morning.
The sound of musical chirping and tousled leaves color the groggy morning air.
There is an odd stillness and simplicity to the morning, as if it is marking the new start of which today symbolized.
Today marks the first day of the school year of Tree Hill High, and for a portion of the students, the last year of their high school careers. The last year before they sever their ties to their families and homes, and embark on the mysterious and tantalizing thought of independence.
Some will go off to attend college, and others take on old family businesses. However, they all must survive their final year before getting there.
XOXO
The light hum of Lucas Scott's sleek, red Jaguar, buzzes through the air of the still asleep town.
Lucas had woken up that morning to sunlight peering through the let down lid of his convertible, the familiar grog of a heavy hangover throbbing the back of his head. Though something he is not familiar with was waking up with his limbs tangled with those of the girl he had hooked up with the previous night. Although, then again, there was nothing familiar of that fire cracker brunette he had met last night, she is something completely new, something he has never encountered before.
Soon after his waking, the girl had awoken from her slumber. Lucas couldn't help but think that she looked even better in that moment, with her locks of chestnut tangled and messy, and make up faded away from her face, than she had last night. She appeared more simple and somehow, that made her seem more beautiful.
Lucas had expected there to be some sort of awkward goodbye between the two, the awkward goodbye that one night stands who were complete strangers, which is precisely what the two were, had. However, the blonde was proven wrong when the beautiful girl had gotten up smoothly from their laying position in the back seat of his car, very cliché he knew, and gotten dressed quickly.
Climbing out of the boy's car to get to her own, Brooke gave a wicked sort of wink, and teasing "See you around," as farewell.
Leaving behind a confused and entranced Lucas Scott in her wake.
Now, the pale haired boy drives the unfamiliar streets of his home town, somehow finding his way to his father's home, some part of him remembering the street from when he and Nathan made a detour there before the party.
Lucas's thoughts are stuck on the sensual brunette.
Her mocking smirk. The mischievous tone in which she spoke. The pixilated glint sparkling in her hypnotizing orbs.
Every part of her intrigued Lucas, and he hasn't a clue why.
He is Lucas Scott after all, he has been with plenty of girls, and his fare share of women, and each one of them was beautiful, though none had the extra spark that this girl seems to hold, and none of them had held his interest for to long.
But this girl, she is something else. He could have fun with her, but, he doesn't even know if he will ever see her again.
Lucas shakes the thoughts of the girl from his mind, not wanting to think of her for any longer.
Finding the home, Lucas pulls in to the wide drive way, which loops into a large circle, which surrounds a large, eye catching water fountain, depicting the image of a cherub, balancing on one leg and water sprouting from it's mouth.
Stepping out of his car, the blonde's oceans scan the great mansion.
Passed the years, Lucas had forgotten the grandness of the place he had once called his home.
His eyes scan across the various bushes and flower beds that adorn the outside of the mansion, and he examines the uncanny whiteness of the bricks which built the home. Each and every brick in view point sparkles a gleam to match the one of a newly polished purl.
Lucas's glance strays to the front entrance of the home, expecting to see a pair of elegant oak doors, but instead, his eyes catch on the sight of a man, his father.
He is tall, clad in a dark, pinstripe suit. The darkness of the suit bringing out the dark blue of the man's eyes, the dark blues which turn obsidian blacks when he is enraged.
That small shift of color in the man's eyes was one of the greatest allies to Lucas as a child. The color change helped Lucas in knowing to weather avoid his father or act normally.
It is a shame that his father's, Dan, eyes are covered now, by his dark hair.
Dan has a boyish hair cut, where the front falls across one side of his forehead, perhaps in an attempt to seem more approachable as the Mayor of the small town.
Although, seeing that hairdo on his father sickened Lucas, a bitter laugh almost escaping the blonde's lips at the sight of it.
Dan Scott is anything but boyish. Dan Scott is manipulative, cold, and ruthless; he has never been anything else but such.
Lucas catches sight of his father making a rapid gesture with his right hand, obviously wanting Lucas to come in side.
With a role of the eyes, and deep exhale of breath Lucas shuts the door of his car, and enters the place he hasn't been inside of for over seven years.
XOXO
Not to far from the Scott mansion rested the Davis home.
A small, topless, powder blue buggy is parked in front of the home.
A beautiful brunette sitting in the front seat of the convertible. Her eyes shut, and head resting back on the seat.
She feels the warming rays of sunlight heat her face, trying to melt away the tingling feeling of the hang over she had acquired due to the number of shots she had taken the night before.
The morning felt as if it has been drenched in a haze. Every move she made, every memory she played felt abstract and alien.
It had been an odd feeling, waking up still in the arms of the blonde from the bar.
Brooke has slept with enough people to have become accustomed to the awkward morning between her and who ever she had spent the night with.
Though, this morning had felt different some how. Waking with the boy felt easy, even natural.
That realization leading to an uncomfortable shutter to run down her spine, so she had redressed quickly, and retreated as soon as she possibly could have, trying to play off a cool exterior.
Shaking her head, trying to rid herself of all that had occurred last night, she steps out of the buggy, and walks towards her front door.
Before Brooke reaches the intense red painted door, she stops in her tracks. She finds a medium sized package on the steps, with a note attached on top.
Rolling her eyes, Brooke snaches the package from the ground, knowing what it will be.
Taking a seat on her couch, she reads the note, her theory being proven right with each word she reads.
The note is written in a light, speedy hand, the hand she has accustomed to her mother's main assistant, Marese.
The note read the same exact thing as it had every year before. Mareese apologizing for Brooke's mother's, Victoria Davis's, absence, and that she wishes Brooke good luck on her first day of school. There not being no indication that either women knew what today represented, how today is the first day of her last year in high school.
A humorless grin breaks the girl's lovely face, on the edge of becoming a snarl. Brooke wonders if next year the same letter, attached to the same box, containing the same designer outfit, it'll come next year, but with no one to receive it. Perhaps the note will fly away, and the fabric will become withered and frayed?
With another shark of the head, Brooke stands from her sitting position, tossing aside the box carelessly not being the least bit interested in seeing its contents, and walks up the starers of the home.
A sudden feeling of needing to take a steamy shower before the school day starts comes over the brunette.
XOXO
Lucas sits in one of the many seats around the dining table of the kitchen.
He sits there, looking as if a child waiting on his punishment, which in some senses, he is.
Dan stands in front of the blonde, barely concealed rage coloring his features.
Lucas takes careful caution to keep his eyes locked on his father, no matter how frightful the sight.
Feeling fear from seeing the anger in his father's face is nothing compared to what can come over Lucas once he takes a closer look to the kitchen. The kitchen he had used as a child. The kitchen who's surface may have changed, but the memories remain intertwined with every peace of it.
"Who the hell do you think you are!" Dan barks, slamming a clenched fist on the marble counter top.
"You don't come home last night, and then I find you driving home this morning, looking like shit, and smelling like you spent the night in a bar."
Lucas feels an impulse to give a snarky reply, correcting his father that it was outside of the bar, no in it.
Although, before Lucas has the chance, Dan continues on shouting.
"I brought you back here to help me seem like a great single father, how the hell do you think people will view me if they see you stumbling out of the bars, and having glazed over eyes! Huh?"
"Probably not well," Lucas blurts, his eyes, full of hatred, not straying away from his father's fierce flare.
"Don't start with the smart ass remarks," Dan warns before snatching up his ebony suit case.
"I've got a meeting to attend this morning," he states in an informative manner. "You better be here when I get back here tonight."
At that, Dan walks out of the front doors of the home, an air of bravado and anger covering him.
Even with his father's departure, Lucas feels the thick tension in the air, a tension that he is not sure will ever dissipate.
After a few moments of taking and releasing deep breaths, Lucas stands, and starts back to his car, deciding that he will just change outside, sense his suitcase full of clothing is still in the trunk of his Jag.
Being in the kitchen is hard enough, Lucas does not wish to risk the chance of going more deeply in the home, and seeing all the things that have changed and all the things that have stayed the same. Lucas does not want to feel the memories creep on him now. It is to soon, it is still far too soon.
XOXO
An excited spark traveled through the students of Tree Hill High, especially those who were seniors.
Long time friends, who were separated by the summer break, reunite in embraces and greetings in the middle of the halls.
Friends exchange schedules to see the classes they may share, while others simply chortle on about their vacations and any major changes they have gone through.
The click of heals hit the polished white floors of the high school as the beautiful brunette walks down the halls, in search of her familiar locker.
She catches sight of the blue locker and heads towards it.
She spins the dile easily, opening the lock with speed.
Her hazel orbs scan the empty locker, holding nothing but dust and an old notebook se had forgotten the previous year.
Brooke sets a few books that she does not need for the morning in to the locker, not paying attention to the students around her.
"Hey bitch," a familiar voice greets before taking her place on Brooke's left side.
The brunette does not have to shift her gaze to see who is standing there, she already knows.
"Hey slut," Brooke laughs before setting the last unnecessary textbook into her locker.
"Glad to see you aren't so hung over that you can make it to school," Rachel nods with a smirk playing on the edges of her lips.
"This coming from the girl who had spent practically all last night drunk at one of Nathan Scott's parties." Brooke replies with a smirk.
"First of all," Rachel starts, "It was fun, which you wouldn't know because you left with out even telling me," she wrinkles her nose at the last part of her sentence, obviously agitated in her best friend's lack of communication.
Brooke gives her an apologetic look before Rachel continues on.
"And I wasn't drunk the e entire night, just the start, and a little of the middle, and the end…"
"So…the entire night," Brooke clarifies with a smirk, causing Rachel to give a roll of her beautiful amber eyes.
"Oh what ever skank," Rachel waves off her comment.
"So, were you to drunk to get a feel on Nate's cousin?" Brooke questions, still being curious in the mysterious Scott boy.
"Even if I wasn't, I wouldn't have been able to get a feel on him," Rachel replies. "He ditched before he even the ten minute mark."
Brooke gives the red head an inquisitive glance, "That's weird?" She states with squinted eyes, "Why would he do that?"
Rachel gives a shrug of the shoulders in response, "Maybe he's not into parties?"
Brooke nods, taking that in as a logical response.
"Well, besides that," Rachel begins. "You know I went over your place early this morning. I wanted to borrow that baby blue lace top you have, and to get ready with you. You know, like you, me, and Hales have done sense like forever."
Brooke just continues to nod, only half listening, the other half thinking of what else she may need that morning.
"Well…" Rachel speaks on, "I didn't see you at your place. Hell I didn't even see your car in the drive way." Rachel informs, waiting for her friend's reaction.
Brooke freezes in the middle of picking out a note book from her shoulder bag, a light pink tint coloring her cheeks. She does not meet Rachel's eyes.
"I knew it!" Rachel exclaims joyfully.
"So who was it? Was he hot? Do I know him?" The red head starts rambling questions rapidly, enjoying the obvious embarrassment on her close friend's cheeks.
"It was nothing," Brooke tries to laugh, but ends up sounding nervous.
"Oh please B-Davis," Rachel puffs. "He must have been really good if you're not giving any details, or most likely he must have sucked-"
"Rachel," Brooke blurts out, needing for Rachel to stop speaking.
"Where's Haley?" She asks pleadingly, wanting there to be an aversion from what she had done last night.
No matter how many times Brooke has done that same exact thing. Each time she would hate herself a little more. It is not as if she enjoys sleeping around, but she fears if she stops, she will feel more alone and unwanted than ever.
Although, Brooke could not help but feel as if last night was different some how. When she woke up, she felt more than just the sensation of not being alone, she felt safe, which is of course completely irrational and nonsensical. He was just a random, good looking guy that she met at an ordinary, average bar on a ordinary, average night.
though, something still felt different somehow.
"Fine," the high pitch of Rachel's voice breaks Brooke's thoughts of the handsome blonde boy she had met the previous night.
"Avoid the question if you must," she concedes. "And to answer your completely transparent question, I don't know where Hales is, but if I had to guess I bet she's with choir boy making out some where."
Rachel spoke of Jake in an annoyed, distasteful tone, the tone she only reserved for when she spoke of the brunette musician.
"Why do you hate him so much?" Brooke wonders, leaning against her now shut locker, relieved that the topic of their conversation was no longer what, or rather, who she did last night.
"I don't hate him," Rachel clears. "Sometimes I just want to punch his perfect little face…I mean honestly, he is so freaking fake. No guy can be that perfect, he is just irritating," Rachel finds herself in an angry tangent, the way she always got when she was complaining about Jake Jagielski.
Brooke shakes her head at her long time friend. "Can you just stop being so hateful and let Haley and Jake be the adorable, all American golden couple that they are?" She asks with a raised brow.
"Whatever," Rachel mutters before catching sight of Clay Evans walking towards them.
"Talking about golden boys," the red head mutters before telling Brooke that she will see her later, and walking away from her, leaving Brooke and Clay to themselves, well as much to themselves as they can get in a hall crowded with students.
XOXO
Lucas found the high school easy enough, it being the only high school in the small town.
He steps through the front doors of the school, scanning his blue pools across the halls.
It is a small school, well small compared to the previous schools he has attended.
A mixture of students, freshman through seniors, walk the halls, which is odd to Lucas.
Back in his boarding school, there were designated halls for seniors and all other grades, though they all intermingled in the court grounds between the buildings.
Lucas stops in what he assumed to be the main office, receiving his class schedule, locker number, and a map which showed the lay out of the school.
Lucas thanks the elderly secretary with one of his dazzling smiles before he starts to walk the halls of the school.
His eyes were cast down, trying to figure out where his English class is coated when he heard a familiar voice call his name.
He looks up to find his younger cousin walking towards him, a friendly smile plastered to his face.
"Hey cous," Lucas smiles back.
"Are you alright? You got out there pretty quick last night?" Nathan questions.
"Yeah man, I'm fine. I was just feeling a little jet legged." Lucas lies smoothly, not a seconds hesitation.
Nathan smiles towards his older cousin, glad it wasn't anything to serious.
He takes the schedule from Lucas's hand, after being told that the blonde was searching for one of the English rooms.
Nathan starts to lead him towards the room when they were intercepted by Jake Jagielski, who was holding hands with Haley James.
"Hey Nate," Jake grins, and then turns his gaze towards the tall blonde walking besides his long time friend.
"You must be Lucas," he inquires, "I'm Jake, one of Nate's friends, and this is my girlfriend Haley," he introduces, putting an extra emphasis on, "girlfriend."
Lucas gives a simple nod in greeting, not knowing if he will like either of the two.
"So Nate," Jake starts to ask. "Are you heading to the gym for the meeting?"
"Damn it," the raven haired man slams the palm of his hand to his forehead in frustration, "I forgot that Whitey wanted to meet with us."
"Its cool man," Lucas assures, "I can find my way to the class."
Ignoring his cousin's remark, knowing he did not mean it, Nathan shifts his gaze to the small, honey blonde to Jake's right.
Normally, Nathan hated asking Haley James for anything. He thought the girl to be too judgmental, and to much of a goody-goody, though now he was practically pleading with his eyes.
Haley gives an exasperated roll of the eyes towards the pretty-boy, jock, not liking him very much either. However, she volunteered kindly to escort the new student to his class.
As much as Haley would argue that it was just an act of kindness, it was also a bit selfish on her part. the blonde was extremely good-looking, and she wouldn't mind spending more time with him.
The four sum split up into pairs, each set heading towards their respective destinations.
Haley is oddly surprised to how easy it was talking with the blonde.
There is no doubt that he is some what of a player, his easy flirtatious on liners made that very evident, but he was also able to make Haley laugh in a friendly manner.
He possessed a quality that made him easy to talk to, or perhaps it was because the two shared a nice, friendly chemistry from the start.
XOXO
Brooke was a bit surprised in Rachel's sudden departure, but when she turns her gaze to where the red head was looking, she immediately understands.
The brunette remains lying against her locker, not making a move to approach the fair haired boy.
A sudden rush of memories of the night before flourish in her thoughts. She remembers the words he spoke, and her response.
She remembers why she left to find solace in that bar in the first place.
With a nervous swallow, Clay steps in front of her, afraid of what she would say to him. Whatever it was, he most likely deserved.
She looks beautiful, she always looks beautiful.
Her long locks of chocolate cascade down her bear shoulders, and the ocean blue of her halter top made her eyes seem a blazing green.
She looks at him impassively, not helping Clay's nerves.
"Hey," he manages to breathe.
"Hi," Brooke retorts coldly.
"I got you this," he offers pulling out a perfectly kept red rose from his side, and Brooke takes it with a roll of the eyes.
"Clay, its gonna take more than a hello and pretty flower to make up for what you said to me." She asserts.
"I know," he assures. "I just thought it might be a good start?" He gives her a hopeful, questioning look.
Brooke lets out a breath, cursing the part of her that makes it impossibly to stay angry at Clay Evans for to long.
"Its a start," she admits. "But an even better start would be you buying me lunch for the next week."
Clay laughs at the adorable way she reasons with him, agreeing with the offer.
"But Brooke," he starts speaking seriously, "I am sorry. I honestly don't know what came over me last night. I had no right to say that to you."
"No, you didn't," she agrees.
"And, you must know I don't think that. I was just drunk and…" He trails off, not wanting to admit he was jealous.
"I know you didn't mean it dufus," Brooke smiles towards him, giving him a sweet, short hug.
"Now, lets just forgive and forget, and you can take me to English. Okay?"
Clay agrees eagerly, feeling as if a heavy weight was just lifted from his chest.
The two start there walk to Brooke's class, until the brunette catches sight of some one she did not expect in the least.
For a second, she did not believe it was truly him, but he has that same tousled sandy hair, same perfect golden complexion, and same intense bleu to his eyes.
Watching him walk down the hall, along side one of her best friends felt as if someone had just succor punched her in the stomach.
XOXO
Lucas walks alongside the pretty honey blonde, Haley, surprised in how easy it was talking with her.
the two were laughing at a previously told joke when his eyes caught on someone, someone he never expected to see again.
She is still as beautiful as she was this morning, and last night. Lucas is starting to wonder if the girl was ever not beautiful.
Watching her walk towards him, the same recognition in his eyes mirroring in her hazel greens, made a confusion come over Lucas.
"You guys!" The small girl besides Lucas calls excitedly, and Lucas followed as she practically skipped towards them.
"Brooke, Clay," Haley starts to introduce, "This is Nate's cousin Lucas. Lucas, these are two of Nate's closest friends-"
"Gretchen?" Lucas blurts in question before Haley could finish.
"Henry?" Brooke questions back, now completely confused to who this handsome boy was.

Thank you
Miss Pretty Girl: Hey Pretty girl :D I am SO HAPPY you were interested in the story :D And I promise, next chapter will help in some answering :D It'll be the last building chap :D
And yeah, can you think of ANYTHING more awkward than this meeting between the two ;)
I agree that Clay was a bit of an ass last chapter, but jealousy can do things to the best of us;)
I REALLY hope you liked the update, and I am sorry for the lateness and awkwardness that it turned out to be :S
I really hope to get your thoughts on this soon :D
I would love to know what you thought

VFBFan: Hey lovely :D Please do not thank me, I love getting back feed back from anyone who reads this, it is SUCH A HELP :D Thank you so much for leaving such long and thought out reviews, it means EVERYTHING :D
I am SO happy you find this story even the least bit interesting. And who knows about the endgames in this story ;)
And I am sorry, but I just want to make it Clear that it is Clay who likes Brooke, and Jake who is with Haley, you use Jake for both references and I just want to make sure thats clear :D
It is such a sweet thing to say that you like this story for its difference, I am glad you think so :D I am SO happy that it does not fall in the millions of High School theemed OTH Fics on this site :D
I agree that it was harsh of Clay saying that to Brooke, and I believe that it was his jealousy that driver him to ask such an abrupt and rude question And as you saw, Brooke did forgive him, but that incident will not be forgotten easily ;)
And I really am touched that you liked her response, I tried making it as real and true as possible. To be disappointed in yourself you must do something lower than the expectation you live by day by day, but those boundaries are set by your background, who brought you up. So it all goes essentially goes back to your parents.
I completely agree that Broke would love to have boundaries set for her, kind of like what we saw in second half of S2 with Brooke and Karen, right?
Lets see how much longer Brooke lives by her own rules
I am happy you are glad Luke is finally back in town, he should be able to stir the pot, ah? ;)
I REALLY hope you enjoyed this last chapter, and I would LOVE any input, or advice you would have to give me :D
And your grammar is FINE I'm from the U.S and I SUCK at it :D S o you are on point :D
I hope to hear from you soon :)
Thank you

I also COMPLETELY know what you are talking about when you say I should use their hair and eye colors less times in a chapter, my biggest fear in writing is that I'm far to repeditive I REALLY hope that there was a noticeable change in this chapter, but if not, PLEASE LET ME KNOW and I will try harder :D
I am glad you liked how both Brooke and Lucas wanted to be different people, just for that one night
I think it showed how a like and different the two really were, for wanting to be different people and the reasonings behind it
Please do not apologize for reviewing late, ITS NEVER LATE :D
I REALLY HOPE YOU LIKED THIS CHAP :D And would LOVE to know what you thought of it
Thank you for the great help and hopefully I hear from you again

And NO you do not, you are much better than I :D
I am SO happy you think that there is some mystery with the characters, and I am SO happy you actually believe that there is some chemistry between the two right, I know that there really wasn't ANY brucas in this chapter, but I promise chapter 5, hopefully the last building chapter, will have plenty more brucas :DWho knows how these two will react once they actually understand who each other are :D And Clay will probably be pretty jealous :S
And I am glad to know that you are open to see the pairings so far, but please know that the relationships will develop along with the brucas one, and lets see who ends up with who in the end ;)
LOL I am SO happy you seemed to have liked the last chapter and I hope this one wasn't to annoying, but I PROMISE it'll get better by the next one, probably…

BrucasFan66: Hello cutie :D I am SO SORRY for the lateness in my updating, some things have taken more of attention, but I promise that I plan on continuing this story :D And I hope youw won't get to sick of me :S
I am SO HAPPY you liked the way Brucas met, but I'm sorry, you're gonna have to wait to see their reactions, I promise it'll be VERY anticlimactic :D
And I am SURE that there is going to be some tension between Luke and Clay ;)
I hope the beginning half of the chapter helped answer your questions on the rest of the night, but if not please ask, and I will answer next chapter :D
And I agree that Luke is a bit of a player, but I hope next chapter will justify that, just a big :S And I COMPLETELY Brooke needs a really good guy right now, lets hope Luke gets his act together soon, and hopefully Brucas will get together :D
And you are FAR to kind for the sweet words :D I am SO HAPPY that you like my writing style, and that it isn't to much dialog nor is it to much them thinking to themselves
I REALLY hope that continues this chapter, but if not, PLEASE LET ME KNOW :D I would really appreciate it :D
Again, I am SO HAPPY that you are enjoying this story, and sorry for the boring update, but I promise after next chapter there will be no ore billing chapters :D
I really hope you were able to enjoy the chapter never the less :D
I REALLY hope to hear from you soon :D
Thank you
