Myka felt the sweat beginning to bead on her forehead as she dropped to her knees to avoid a swinging arm. She quickly swept her leg around and knocked the attacker down. She pulled a stake from her belt and lunged forward.
Myka braced herself as she hit her mark. The fanged beast disintegrated and Myka exhaled. Every single night it was the same arrangement. She'd go out and fight the fights and then go home alone.
It was kind of hard to have a relationship when you worked for a secret agency that hunted vampires. It wasn't as though she could just tell her date that she had to rush off because there were demons or vampires threatening the world. So Myka did what she had to do to keep the world safe.
Myka sighed and kicked the dirt. It was late and she was tired. She just wanted to get out of this graveyard and go home.
"Having a bad night?" a soft voice queried.
Myka spun around, looking for the source. Her eyes fell on a thin woman leaning against a small mausoleum. Her dark hair was tied into a ponytail and her arms were crossed against her chest.
"What are you doing here?" Myka asked.
"Merely enjoying the show," the woman smirked.
She pushed off the wall of the mausoelum and walked toward Myka. Myka couldn't help but appreciate the natural sway of the dark haired woman's hips, not to mention her accent.
"You shouldn't be here. It's dangerous," Myka said, regaining her composure.
"For who darling? The slayer or the vampires?"
The woman leaned forward as she spoke until her face was mere inches from Myka's. Myka's heart raced.
"Who are you?"
"Oh, just a girl from the other side of the pond. Helena."
"Let me guess, new in town? Looking for trouble?"
"Not at all. I've lived here for many years. Though I suppose lived is probably a bit generous."
It was then that Myka noticed the broken stone littering the front of the mausoleum. It hadn't been that way when she'd arrived. Which could only mean one thing.
"You're a vampire."
"Quite. But don't let that frighten you away dear. I don't bite," Helena smirked, "Unless of course you're into that."
"Give me one good reason not to end your miserable existence right now."
"Oh dear, idle threats are no way to a woman's heart."
"No, but I'm pretty sure this stake will do it," Myka shot back, brandishing the weapon she'd just used.
"Hm. Well, I thought perhaps we could get out of here. Get to know each other. But if you're so determined to kill me, this relationship may not work out."
"Relationship? What relationship?"
"Well, here I though we were getting along quite nicely. Besides, wouldn't be quite the pair at parties? Vampire and slayer, they do say opposites attract."
"Look, I'm not interested in starting any relationships right now. And I'm certainly not interested in a relationship with a vampire."
"Your lips say no, but that look you had when you were sizing me up said yes. And darling, you look as though you could use a little tumble in the hay."
Helena's finger traced lightly up Myka's bare arm. Myka couldn' help the shiver that shook her body. This woman was infuriating. Infuriatingly sexy, Myka's mind supplied.
Helena's hand had made it's way to Myka's face. She wasn't sure if vampires had any sort of feminine wiles, or if these charms were all natural. But Myka knew that when Helena pulled her closer, she didn't even think of pulling away.
