Chapter 3: A mysterious letter
Rachel thought about the man once again. She thought about what he said to her, about how he called her. She had never heard the name Corcoran before. Or had the drunk woman said it before? She thought about everything that had happened, she had turned 11 yesterday and she had gotten a letter. A letter her dads didn't want her to see. She thought it must have something to do with each other. What could it be? Were her parents hiding something from her?
On the end of her bed, her white cat Barbra was acting like it was high on something. She remembered the words the man had said, he had said her cat was a drunk woman called April. Hadn't that been the woman she had seen on her way home? Hadn't the woman called her the chosen one? But if this cat was a woman, did that mean magic existed? Did that mean she could go to Shiz?
"You know…" Rachel pulled the cat in her arms. "Things are getting crazy. I think I'm part of some strange reality show. I think they're trying to fool me and then they'll jump from behind a tree saying: gotcha. I'm not stupid."
She thought about the name she had read on the envelop. What was Hogwarts? What was she doing there? Was this the place where she was going to be special? Maybe it was something like NYADA, a special place for performances. She thought about the name, maybe these people knew something about her mother. She wanted to know about her more than anything. She wanted to find her mother. She wanted to hug her mother. Did she ever know her mother? She knew very little about her past. Her parents said little about where she came from, when something special happened, they simple pushed it away. There were times books would fly off the shelves, but when she said that, they send her to a shrink. They never believed anything she said, almost like she was a liar. She stared at the cat, it had been a strange cat from the beginning. The cat didn't eat any cat food, she preferred anything they ate. So Rachel would give that to Barbra. Right this moment Barbra was hungry, so Rachel pulled the cat in her arms. When she came closer to the kitchen, she heard two voices.
"Did you know that about her mother?" Leroy asked. "Was she part of some cult?"
Rachel didn't understand, was her mother crazy? Was her mother part of some crazy cult? Were they trying to get to her? Was that the crazy woman she had met? Were they trying to get her to join?
"The papers said what happened to her was brutal." Leroy spoke. "And what exactly is this Hogwarts? And what did Shelby give Rachel?"
Had her mother actually taken care of her? Why had she not remained with her mother. Everything started to seem strange. She felt how her cat started to stir. She needed to know more about Hogwarts, maybe she could find that letter again. Had her parents destroyed it? Maybe if she went to this Hogwarts, she might figure out more about her mother Shelby.
"I used to know Shelby's sister, she said her sister was a freak." Hiram spoke. "That school made her a freak. I don't want my daughter to become one of those freaks. Like the man Figgins who dropped Rachel off here."
Rachel ducked away as her parents looked in her direction. She moved away from them. She returned to her room, without food. The cat looked to her in anger. She wanted to say something to Barbra, yet she didn't find the words. She knew her parents would not be home on Friday. That was the perfect day to find that letter. So she simple went to sleep.
That morning, Rachel walked from the stairs. In front of the door were a few letters. She recognized the letter from Hogwarts right away. Why had it come once again, from the window she could see a snow white owl. What was the connection between the letter and the owls? She didn't care about figuring it out. She only needed to know what was inside the letter. So she ran towards the door, she pulled the letter in her hands and stepped inside. She looked at the letter, slowly she started to open it up.
"Rachel, what…" Leroy pulled the letter from her hands. "Rachel, this is just junk mail."
He took the letter and threw it in the fire. Every part of the content was destroyed right away. She thought about everything. Why did her father not want to know what was in the letter? Why would a cult send letters to join them? Would they not simple ask? Schools sent letters. Cults just approached you. She thought about it, the letter had come yesterday. It came today. It would come tomorrow too. There was no need in searching the house for yesterday's letter, chances were that it had been destroyed. Yet she needed to figure out more. Would she be able to find this April Rhodes? When she turned around, she noticed her cat Barbra sitting by the top of the stairs.
"Are you truly a person?" Rachel stared at the cat, it was almost that it shook no. Right after that it moved down the stairs, it sat right next to her. Barbra stared at her. "Barbra what are you trying to say? Do you know Shelby Corcoran?"
The cat spoke, yet Rachel didn't understand what Barbra tried to say. Rachel took her bag and went to school. When she got there, she noticed how mean people could be. They bullied her, they said she had strange taste in music and they would always remind her that she didn't have a mother. Yet she wanted to say that was untrue. That day she didn't say anything. In the free hour she started to look on the internet for Shelby Corcoran, she didn't seem what she found.
'Shelby Corocoran dies in a strange accident. Baby found alive in destroyed home'. She read the article. It was unclear what had happened. The only true thing she knew was that her mother was found dead and that somebody brought her here. She didn't like what she found out, somehow she hoped that her mother would still be alive. When she went home, she thought about how her mother could have been like. She was only 11 years old, she hadn't want to learn this. There was no one she could talk too. When she looked, she noticed that Barbra moved closer to her, almost like she was trying to support her.
"You are one strange cat." Rachel said. That day went by faster. The next morning, Rachel got up very early. She didn't wear socks, she wanted to be as quiet as possible. She didn't want her parents to hear her, she needed to get that letter. She needed to know what was inside it. If she knew, she could find out more about her mother. She knew for sure that it would change her whole life, she felt it in her bones.
When she arrived at the top of the stairs, she saw her father. He was sleeping in front of the door. There were letters on top of him and she was unsure if she could get them. Slowly Rachel started to move. Now it was more important that he didn't hear her. She moved down the stairs, when she was in front of her father she grabbed the letter. She wanted to run to the living room, when she did, she ran in to Hiram.
"Father…"
"Rachel, give me that letter." She turned around, she noticed there were three letters from the same school. Why did they keep sending her letters? They really needed her to get it. Maybe they would send it tomorrow again, not tomorrow she thought. It was Sunday, there was no mail on Sunday. She watched how her parents put the letters in the fire. The information was burned and she was sure she would never find out. The next day she found herself at the breakfast table.
" I love how Sunday we can't any of that nonsense letters…" Leroy smiled. "Don't you think Rachel?"
She didn't answer anything. She simple ate her sandwich. She looked outside, there were owls everywhere. Every time there had been owls, there had been letters. Today there were a lot of owls. She slowly stood up and moved the drapes.
"What's going on?" Leroy stared at Hiram. "Did our neighbours, the strange bird watchers cause this. Or could we call the police to remove this birds from our street?"
"They're owls." Rachel replied. "Owls are magical birds. I heard someone say that it is magic."
"Rachel, there is no such thing as magic." Leroy spoke. "Not magic like wicked or any of your silly musicals."
That very moment letters came inside like magic. She was showed in letters. The very first moment she thought about this had happened. Was this prove that magic existed? Was this prove that her life would change? She smiled as she grabbed a letter. Leroy pulled it from her hands.
"It's my letter." Rachel yelled. "They're my letters."
"We're going away." Leroy screamed. "Far away, where they won't find us."
