The child bit his nail nervously, deep in his own thoughts and world. Obviously not even paying any attention to the teacher in front of the class. It's not like the teacher did not know that, just too tired since Dame- Tsuna has never been someone who listens to class. On his opened notebook that was supposed to be filled with notes given by the teacher, were Italian words, question marks along with names of a certain ghost. Some teacher tried to take a peak on what was their worst student doing so diligently with such serious face. Only to frown when they did not understand what did he wrote. Finally, they left him alone. Takeshi kept stealing glances at his best friend. Curious and worried about his childhood friend. It's not everyday seeing Tsuna with that kind of scary expression. Even the bullies and teasers left him alone today.
It has been more than three days since he last saw the blonde ghost, and with every second passing without Giotto around made his worry meter goes higher and higher. If the meter reached its limit, Tsuna was sure he'll break down and run the entire Namimori just to find him again. Though it might be impossible. Chocolate brown eyes landed back on the open pages. He had listed every reasons why Giotto disappeared, every places Giotto might gone to and every ways to find his friend.
Reasons, maybe Giotto had business to taken care of and went away for a while. He couldn't really be in the mansion 24 hours. Maybe he got bored of Namimori and took a trip? That reason was then crossed out. As far as Tsuna knew, Giotto loves Namimori almost as much as Hibari does, he won't leave the town. Places, as Giotto's not really a human, maybe he went to another dimension? He would have leave a note or so to Tsuna. Ways to find his friend? None. Completely empty. Giotto rarely talks about himself. Tsuna did not ask much questions but spend the times together for books or tea time. The blonde would always be waiting behind the doors. He would smile when Tsuna stepped into the building, knelt down with open arms and gave Tsuna a warm but technically cold hug. His trusty intuition kept telling him that the blonde ghost are still somewhere in Namimori, doubting his intuition for once, he tried to figure out more reasons.
After working his brain to his limit, he made an unreasonable solution. Though it's not quite unreasonable, but reasonable and logical. Knowing Giotto, he wouldn't just leave Tsuna like that without a word. The conclusion was, Giotto has been abducted by ghost hunters. Just like the hunters in 'Ghost Busters' or 'Casper' movies he watched before. Giotto has been there for centuries, some coward must have called the ghost hunter and sucked Giotto into a vacuum. Giotto must be trapped in there with all the dust and dirt! Calling out for his only friend - Tsuna- for help!
The tension around him seemed to lightened a bit when Tsuna straightened himself on his seat. A determine expression on his face as he stares at the notebook. He'll save his friend! 'Just wait for a bit longer, Giotto-nii! I'll come and save you!' the child said to himself with a nod. Just wait till the school ends! As much as he wants to run out and find his friend, he doesn't want to get his mother upset by skipping class or face a certain prefect. He turned his head to the side, where his childhood friend seated and was staring at him with an eyebrow raised.
"Mr. Watson!" Tsuna said, pointing towards the raven haired, with a serious face. Takeshi could only tilt his head in confusion, assuming this 'Mr. Watson' was him. Are they role playing again? "We're going to solve the mystery case after school!"
The child who called himself Sherlock raised his hand to place an invisible pipe between his lips. "We'll hunt those hunters down!"
It is a wonder why the teacher decided not to scold and punish the two boys.
Right after the bell rang, announcing the end of school, Tsuna dragged his best friend along with him out. Eager to do an investigation to find his friend. Well, everyone knows what's the penalty of running in the hallway. The wrath of Hibari Kyoya.
"Omnivore" his voice filled with venom and hisses, glaring holes at a certain brunet who flinched and stopped running. If looks could kill, Tsuna along with many would have been dead by now.
"Ah K-Kyouya-sempai" Tsuna stuttered, taking a step back from the demon who's just a meter away from him. "I-I was just in a hurry! You see, I need Watson-" he pointed to the grinning Takeshi who waved and 'yo'ed at his distant relative. "- to help me investigate on a disappearance!" that seems to managed to ease down the rage and arouse his curiosity. The raised eyebrow showed it, even though Hibari's expression did not show much. Lowering his tonfas, the prefect moved closer to the omnivore, pulling him along to his personal office (Which was a preparation room before the demon of Namimori invaded Namimori elementary school.) Tsuna could only follow silently with Takeshi behind him. It won't do good if any of the students heard about Giotto, there'll be more troubles!
"Talk" demanded Hibari Kyouya as soon as the door of his office was closed and guarded by his trusty underling, Kusakabe. Tsuna had always wonder about the underlings' age. they looked like middle school's gangsters. With their gangster hairstyle. Despite their looks, they were awfully polite. Just as Giotto said, don't judge a book by its cover!' Tsuna felt more and more mature and independent with Giotto's teaching and advises!
"W-Well.. actually" the brunet took a deep breath, his heart beating against his rib cage in an abnormal beat. Letting a sigh out of his nose, he looked at the raven haired senior. For a moment there Tsuna's eyes glittered in sunset orange, along with the aura of a carnivore. That made Hibari smirked inwardly. Tsuna has never been an herbivore. He looks like one, but not always acts like one. "This is a serious matter that I'll be talking about, Kyouya-sempai. And I will need your help too"
The blood in Hibari boiled, his hands itching to grab his tonfas and attack on the herbivorous carnivore. But this must be a bad timing.
"And why do I have to help you..?" Hibari raised an eyebrow, crossing both arms in front of his chest and leaned against the table behind him.
"Because the victim is one of Namimori residents" when it comes to Namimori, Hibari will do anything to maintain the peace. Well, maintaining the peace by throwing out his own tornado. But because of him, the number of delinquents have reduced greatly.
"Hn" was the answer he got. Tsuna has know the prefect long enough to read him. Hn, that means positive. With a bright smile and a clap of his hands, he started his plan.
The small Japanese Sherlock and his assistance, Mr. Watson, stepped into the haunted mansion. A bubble pipe hanging between his lips with hands on his hips.
"Now, !" he called out his assistance, who answered him with his signature smile. " Go forward and investigate the east wing! I'll take the west wing"
Without even know what that means, Takeshi answered with a 'Roger!' and a salute before running towards the east side of the hallway. Tsuna nodded proudly, crossing his arms in front of his chest with pride.
"Am I suppose to follow him, Sawada-san?" the tallest of the group, Kusakabe, stepped forward, tilting his head low enough to look at the brunet in the eye. With a nod, the child pointed to where Takeshi has ran off to. "Onward! Knight Kusakabe! Protect and assist Mr. Watson with your dying will!" with a small chuckle, said knight nodded and hurried to catch up with the baseball ace.
This is Tsuna's plan of war. To fight off the hunters that may be still roaming in the mansion to find something precious to the ghost. As Tsuna and Takeshi are still children, they can't really defense themselves with adult hunters! Though Tsuna was sure that Takeshi can take care of himself just fine, for safety steps, he had asked Kusakabe to watch over him. As for Tsuna, he has been paired up with the fearsome demon of Namimori, Hibari Kyouya. Despite how scary and dangerous Hibari is, Tsuna felt safe around him. Compare to the hunters, Hibari is much more scarier than them. Besides, pairing Takeshi up with his relative seems to be the worst mistake ever. The mansion might crumble down with Hibari's rage and Takeshi's laughter.
"Shall we go then, Kyouya-sempai?" he left the prefect with no nicknames, as the brunet still values his name thank you very much. Though the singing canary bird got one. "Are you ready to defeat the hunters, General Hibird?" the bird only answered with Tsuna's name and 'omnivore'
And thus, they started their little adventure trying to find the ghost who has been haunting this mansion for more than five hundred years. It is surprising that Hibari took the information about the ghost without much questions. The small Sherlock walked down the hallway towards the west. Where the library was located along with many many rooms that Tsuna dare not to explore or couldn't remember. Tsuna has let Takeshi took charge of investigating the garden, located in the East.
The child tried not to make too much noise, but kept ending up shrieking his signature shriek and hid behind Hibari when he heard small noises of trees or rats. Where did all the courage went?!
After what it seems to be an eternity they arrived the library. For the past three days Tsuna has looked into every room and every inch in the mansion. But he left the forbidden places alone. Though this is Giotto he wanted to find, and there's no other clue in other places. For once, Tsuna decided to break the rules. Giotto is much more important now.
"We'll be investigating there" Tsuna said behind the skylark, tiny hand pointing towards the stairs leading to the upper level of the library. His bubble pipe seems to be dropped somewhere in the mansion when Tsuna's busy hiding behind the prefect. With a nod, Hibari took the lead.
"Yammamoto-san, you shouldn't run and laugh down the hallway! What if you tripped or the hunters heard you" Kusakabe shouted, panting heavily as he ran behind the called raven.
"But if I stop you'll catch me! I don't want to lose yet" Takeshi shouted back, giving the gangster like boy a glance before turning back to the path.
"What lose?! We're in the same team no? And I am supposed to catch up with you just as Sawada-san told to" that made the baseball ace stopped his running, looking at Kusakabe with a confused look.
"Eh? We're not playing tag?"
"Of course we're not!" was the boy even listening when Sawada-san was explaining?!
After he caught up with Yammamoto and his breath, he started explaining to the dense boy again. About their mission here and about the two of them are in a team. The younger boy just laughed and rubbed his head, apologizing to his senior. So they weren't role playing as detectives being chased by assassins!
Cold wind that slapped both boys suddenly made them stopped talking and moving, even breathing. The wind sent shivers down their spines. They looked around, body tensed and defenses up. There was no open windows or holes, so where did the wind came from?
"Ah, what is this? Living visitors?" and followed with a laugh that made the children shivered in fear.
The brunet sneezed. There was no different from the lower ground. Just dust and more dust. As if it have been years since someone stepped in here. But he has to remind himself, Giotto is a ghost, he can't really leave foot prints here. There's shelves after shelves, books after books covered in dust. Tsuna realized almost all of the book here were all in Italian, and most have the word 'Vongola' in it. As in clam. There were some with weird titles such as 'Acrobaleno' or 'Boxes' but Tsuna found no courage to flip open the books to feed his curiosity. He had almost bumped into Hibari, who has stopped abruptly.
"Kyouya-sempai..?" Tsuna called out, turning to where the skylark has been staring at.
There on the study table, were books pilling up higher than both of them. From Greek to Latin then Italian languages. Hidden by the piles of books were a small wooden box as big as Tsuna's hand. Carved by professional hands with the word 'Vongola' and a symbol on it. Hibari had tried to open it, but it was locked. Then he tried to open it with force, but was stopped by a panicking Tsuna.
"Maybe there's a key or something.." mini Sherlock moved behind the study table, checking the drawers one by one. Most were empty, but the last one was filled with aged files stamped with 'Confidential' in bloody red ink. No keys were found.
The confused Sherlock stood up, tilting his head aside to call out for the prefect. Only to find himself completely alone.
"Kyouya-sempai..?" the brunet called out, his eyes widened as he looked around the room. The skylark would not leave him alone just like that. Maybe he was hidden by the shelves of books? But his intuition told him he was alone. His intuition kept ringing in his head, telling him to find his friend and get out of the building. It rang so loud that it's unbearable.
"Tsuna!" a familiar voice called out to him. Relief washed over him when he turned around to find a familiar blonde rushing towards him. He couldn't be happier. For a moment all the problems were gone when a pair of arms wrapped around him. He just wanted to be hugged like that for now, all questions can be answered later.
"Giotto-nii!" Tsuna called out happily, gripping on the other's clothing so tightly with the strength he never knew he has. He doesn't want to pull away, he doesn't want to go until his questions were answered, but the look in Giotto's eyes stopped him from bombing him with it.
"Why did you come back.." Tsuna wanted to reply that because Giotto's his friend, because he doesn't want to lose him, because he wanted to stay with him. But no words came out as he was still stunned with the expression he was given.
Guilt, sadness and fear could be seen in that blue eyes. Before Tsuna could even have the time to pull himself together to talk, his hand was grabbed. A cold item was pressed against his palm.
"Tsuna" there's the serious tone he has never heard Giotto used. "I need you to keep this safe for me. I need you to stay away from this mansion- no, stay away from the park for me" A cold and big hand raised to cup his chubby cheek. "Don't come back, never come back. Tell your friends to stay away too"
The blonde ghost stood up, scooping Tsuna into his arms as he looked around to see if the coast is clear.
"And Tsuna" called brunet raised his head to look at the warm yet sad smile "I love you" a cold lips were pressed against his own. And everything went black.
The child opened his eyes, feeling that his bed were harder and colder than it used to be, and dirty. Tsuna stopped, his eyes staring at the orange sky. This is not his room. He was laying on the ground. He turned his head to the side, only to find a Takeshi laying beside him unconscious, another side were the Namimori demon. Then, all memories rushed back. Giotto. Tsuna sat up, looking around to see him and his little group were laying in the middle of the park. Just beside the slide. He raised his hand, noticing he was still holding something cold that was given by his friend.
A key.
