"I'm pregnant," I told him honestly. He didn't have time for pleasantries, right? So he didn't need a lead up to the news.
Shock flew across his face before he could contain it. He pulled his features together quickly, though, and then looked at me without emotion. "Honored to have you tell me first," he sneered at me. "Weasley excited about a bouncing baby? Or is he still enjoying being one?"
"I'm not sure it's his," I told him. This was the "nice" thing about the lack of relationship I had with Draco. I didn't feel obligated to be nice, so I didn't have to beat around the bush like I did with other people.
He raised one eyebrow. "So you've moved on. How touching," he drawled sarcastically.
"Actually, I haven't. I haven't really had the time."
"Then how do you not know if it's…" He trailed off, his eyes searching my face. I saw them drop to my stomach, and then he was looking around us, making sure no one would hear. "What the hell? You think it's mine?"
I shrugged. "It's an honest toss-up."
"Shit," he muttered. He looked at me for a few minutes without saying anything. He looked around again. "I want it tested," he told me, his eyes hard and cold. "Whether before or after, I want to know definitively if it's mine. If it isn't, I can drop this whole mess like the unstable potion it is. If it is mine…" He sighed. "Then I will man the hell up and take responsibility."
I stared at him in surprise.
"That doesn't mean I'm going to be coming around that much," he told me sharply. "And it certainly doesn't mean that we're together or anything like that." He took a deep breath. "But I've heard rumors that the Dark Lord was abandoned by his father, and that that's what started the whole mess. I don't need any of my kids growing up to be like that."
I didn't say anything, but I nodded. He nodded as well. "I need to get back. Let me know when you get it tested."
I nodded again. "I'll have to go to a muggle doctor for that. And you'll have to go with me."
"What?" He asked, dropping his voice to a whisper as another wizard walked towards us. "Why?"
"They'll have to test its DNA against one of you. I know Ron won't do it. He doesn't even think you can get it tested," I whispered quickly.
He stared at me, his jaw clenched tight. The wizard, whom I did not recognize, came up and stood next to Draco. "Ah, there you are Draco. Got distracted on your break?" He looked at me, and his eyes darkened in a way that made me uncomfortable. "She's pretty famous. I won't blame it on you if she did distract you." I looked at him in disgust, but he wasn't looking at me.
Draco looked over at the young man. "Life still happens even when we're dealing with things in there," he said noncommittally.
The young man nodded and then nodded in a direction behind them. "She wants us back. The next trial's about to start."
Draco nodded and then looked back at me.
"I'll look into it and let you know what will need to be done," I told him vaguely. He nodded slowly.
Then he turned around and began walking away from me, his co-worker following behind him quickly. I bit my lip for a moment. And then I sighed. I turned sharply to the left, and then the constrictive magic surrounded me, pushing against me with insistent force.
